  • "The property downstairs was dirty, and smelt musty throughout the stay, my 3 year old granddaughter found a used vape under the sofa (not acceptable at all)."

The towels were extremely small, no toiletries as advertised on the photos and only 2 toilet rolls. The Wi-Fi was awful, the speed was shockingly slow if it connected at all. We found some parking passes on the last day under the coffee table which didn’t help at all. The neighbour at number 3 constantly looked into the windows and checked the bins, he told us we couldn’t use them for rubbish as they had just been emptied. We left the bag outside the door which he moved before we had chance to. Outside lighting too bright and stayed on all night, along with cheap blinds it flooded the bedrooms all night long. Location was great, we have stayed many times previously in this area, we wouldn’t stay in Kiwi Cottage again. It seems the owners are here for the income and not the outcome. Real shame. Happy to talk in person with the owners if required to clarify any of the points raised.

I am really disappointed to read your feedback. Kiwi Cottage is very special to us and we enjoy sharing it with our guests. There is privacy film on the windows so no one can see in but guests can see out. I’m sorry you found the cottage dirty. I will speak with the cleaners to ensure that standards are raised. We do not advertise toiletries and we ask the cleaners to provide a toilet roll so the cottage is ready for guests when they arrive, but assume guests will bring their own for the rest of their stay. There is an ongoing issue with the wifi which is under review but there is a mobile hub in the cottage which provides wifi to the cottage. The light outside is bright and on all night as the yards in Whitby are the equivalent of roads so the council has to provide street lamps. Thank you for your feedback, its invaluable . . nice and cosy, ideally located and fairly priced.. the kitchen Is ideal for short breaks and the shower was amazing. Beds nice and comfy we took 2 travel cots for the little ones. There's only 2 negatives we had to say about kiwi. A safety gate for the stairs wouldn't go a miss just to stop kids climbing and lastly the wifi is very poor but apart from that everything was perfect! We will definitely be returning to kiwi cottage! Thanks for an amazing stay

  • "Kiwi Cottage looked perfect on the photo's on the website."

In reality it wasn't. Firstly, both double mattresses in the property need replacing. The one in the main bedroom isn't fit for purpose ( when you sit on the bed,you instantly feel the slats of the bed) and the other one was only passable when we put a duvet on top of it. The bedroom window upstairs was painted shut and I had to go round it with a knife to open it. ( If there had been a fire downstairs,we would of been trapped). When I had opened it,there was nothing to keep it open,so we had to put a rolled up towel there. The window in the lounge is super difficult to open too. The floor lamp in the lounge doesn't work. The light in the fire doesn't work. No tea towels in the kitchen. Hooks and drawing pins in lounge fireplace/beams from Christmas decorations? We found dry dog food on the kitchen floor and a plastic bottle lid in the bedroom. There are 7 old fashioned style bins outside of Kiwi Cottage, right near the lounge window. A resident of the Yard regularly comes out to put a single item into the bins (in one afternoon in the space of 3 hours,11 times) and he looks straight into the lounge of Kiwi cottage which as you can imagine isn't acceptable,so the only option is to pull the dark blue roller blind down to a point that blocks his view, only that left us with hardly any day light. There also isn't anything up at the kitchen window, so you are completely on show in there. The gate to the Yard needs fixing too,it scrapes on the floor and as it's regularly used, the sound becomes really annoying. We actually left a day early as we were sick of waking up with aches from the mattress and sitting in the lounge with hardly any day light. Sykes did offer to get the owners to come and look at the dangerous windows ,but I declined that offer as I was so fed up with the property I didn't want to come face to face with the owner. In all the years I've been holidaying in cottage's,I have never felt so fed up and stressed and so thankful to be at home.

  • "A fab location for shops and public transport, a lovely little cottage."

Both staircases in the house are steep and winding, need to take extra care when using them. Kitchen and bathroom both modern and clean, although I think a blind or something up at the bathroom window would offer more privacy. The bedrooms and lounge were nice enough but definitely needed cleaning more thoroughly. As we left the property I stripped the beds and noticed some of the pillows need replacing. My son stayed in the top room and left his clothes in his bag so we didn't notice that there was actually a package with some new unopened pillows in the wardrobe, with several old pillows etc piled on top of them. As mentioned, cleaning definitely needed inside and around bedroom furniture.

  • "The best thing about this cottage is the location - it is absolutely perfect!"

In addition the cottage has everything you look for on holiday. Unfortunately the worst thing about it is the stairs. I know it is an old cottage and I appreciate that but the stairs are dangerous (and there are two sets!) I actually fell down them during our stay and really hurt my leg and both arms. Just be careful.

  • "Nice cottage in a great central location."

Unloading the car can be tricky in peak times as the cobbled street can get extremely busy and is for pedestrian use only unless for access. But this is advertised, just be aware especially if you’re arriving at a weekend. It’s much less busy after 5 when the shops start to close. The stairs inside can be tricky to navigate especially if you are coming with a toddler! We had to be very careful and block them off with a suitcase during our stay. But it’s to be expected in a period property, just worth noting if you have young children. The cottage itself would be perfect if the housekeepers paid a little more attention to detail. It hadn’t been cleaned when we arrived at 3, so delayed us by 2.5 hours. Not ideal with a toddler and a dog after a long drive. The owner of the property was very apologetic and did offer to pay for our dinner that evening as an apology which was much appreciated. I have since seen another review where this has happened before, so hopefully the housekeepers are more organised in the future. The cottage itself is nice, modern kitchen and bathroom, but still quirky and in keeping with the age. The only downfall was the cleanliness in parts, toothpaste splashes were left on the hand wash from the people who were staying before us, quite a lot of dust and other peoples socks, dice etc behind the sofas. And the duvet, pillows and mattress to the double bed on the second floor were terribly filthy and stained. Which wasn’t pleasant to see when stripping the beds upon our departure. They need to be replaced ASAP as it’s not at all hygienic. I did notify the owner of this straight away, and she has assured me that she is contacting the housekeeper’s, so hopefully this has been resolved now. Because honestly, just replacing the duvet, mattress, and pillows and giving the place a thorough clean it would be PERFECT! I can’t fault the owner as she was so easy to reach and responded straight away and thanked me for letting her know. Whitby is gorgeous and overall we really enjoyed our stay. And we would stay at this cottage again if the above has been resolved.

  • "We was unable to stay at this property as the advertising was false."

There was no secure area as stated for our dog. With him only being a puppy we relied on the secure garden which was Non existent. Also no parking anywhere close to the property and it was impossible to get all our belongings safely to the cottage. The streets was so crowded it wouldn’t have been appropriate or safe to carry all up there. Overall I am very disappointed with the false advertisement and the fact we traveled over 2 hours to not be able to stay in the accommodation we had paid for. How are we going to be reimbursed as we did not stay and had to pay for another property last minute!!

I’m sorry to read that you have been disappointed by your stay at Kiwi Cottage in Whitby. We always welcome feedback and are continuously looking at areas where we can improve. Our listing does not state that there is a secure garden but that it is located in one of the old yards. Whitby is a very popular destination and we acknowledge that it can be very busy in peak season. We will double check our listing and ensure that it gives a fair representation of our cottage and of the thriving seaside town it is located in. Property Owner

Thanks also to the owners for the information they provided prior to our stay. The facilities in the property are great - fab kitchen and bathroom. Also enjoyed the welcome treats and games chest! Despite being just off Church Street and under the Steps, it is quiet. But there is so much around - cafes, Bistro, shops and a small beach. A great base, so you can park your car and explore. We used the Church Street Pay and Display - 5 minutes away and the cost was £9 for 24hours. Would definitely recommend to others. Also on a side note about Sykes Cottages - they helped resolve an issue (not to do with Kiwi Cottage) brilliantly - thanks!

  • "It takes a lot to impress my hubby, but as we walked into the quaint low ceiling beamed cottage, my hubby said wow as I did!"

It’s wonderful, and the little added touches like the tray of plum bread and chocolate chip cookies along with the tea, coffee and milk was an added extra lovely. The cottage was clean, warm and comfortable all with little themed Kiwi furnishings throughout. The kitchen is small but was more than sufficient for our stay, with modern fixture and fittings including a microwave, and induction hob. We took the top of the house room where my mum and dad took the large triple room on the lower floor. I loved the crisp white sheets and comfortable pillows, We brought our own but they ended up being thrown on the floor as we favored the house pillows. The only little thing I would raise, if you struggle with stairs this isn’t the cottage for you as they have a lovely winding staircase to the top of the house. Parking is across the bridge, it’s only a 10 minute walk. Don’t worry you can park outside the alley where the cottage is to unload and reload. I worried at first, but who wouldn’t want to have a stroll through Whitby. We loved every minute and will definitely be coming back.

Thank you for such a kind review. It is great to hear someone talk about our beautiful cottage with such warmth. You are welcome to return any time Property Owner

I know the booking said that we would only be able to drop the luggage then park elsewhere but it was not clear that the house was up an entry off a very busy pedestrian area. When we arrived on the Saturday it was a complete nightmare, I was convinced my husband was going to knock someone over and on the way up the hill the name of the yard was not visible, it would have helped to have a Church Street number that the entry was next too and that there was a turning circle up the hill where we could turn around to return down the hill. The parking was also misleading, when I booked it said free parking a short distance away, the closest we got was 3000 steps away down and back up steep cobbled roads, not what I call a short distance. All in all it was a lovely cottage in a lovely town but the lack of closer parking spoilt it for me, because we were out and about in Yorkshire during the day we were stressed each time we were coming home searching for car parking.

Enter into the property and be welcomed into the open-plan living space where two sofas sit before the Smart TV and has board games for everyone to enjoy.

Gather around the dining table for a home-cooked meal or indulge in a takeaway, before planning the day’s events the next morning here while you tuck into a hearty breakfast.

Walk through to the kitchen which has dove grey units and sleek white worktops providing all the necessary appliances for home cooking.

Find the bedrooms laid out over the first and second floor, with a first-floor family room with a Double bed and Single bed, whilst the second-floor is home to a double bedroom, with both holding a range of furnishings for storage and sharing a large family shower room with deluxe fixtures and fittings.

Kiwi Cottage is one of the old yards off Church Street and is central for cafés, restaurants, shops, and galleries, and of course the wonderful Tate Hill Sands beach.

Whitby Abbey is at the top of the famous 199 Steps, and is well-known for inspiring Bram Stoker’s Dracula thanks to its eerie architecture.

Head down to Whitby Beach which is great for paddling, sunbathing, and crabbing if you’re feeling adventurous, and you might even find some fossils too.

Enjoy a guided walk through Whitby, or venture into one of the several interesting museums, like the Captain Cook Museum, Whitby Jet Museum, and the Whitby Museum at the nearby Pannett Park.

The park is lovely for strolling through, as well as hosting an excellent play area, great for the younger ones when the weather is fine.

There are plenty of boat trips to be enjoyed, offering a chance to see the beautiful coastline from the water, as well as the North Yorkshire Moors steam train running up to Pickering.

At the end of the day treat everyone to a classic Whitby fish and chips followed by a lemon top ice cream, to be enjoyed overlooking the sea, or in the comfort of your self-catered cottage.
