  • "This is my 4th stay in laurel cottage but with a different group of friends."

They loved it every bit as much as I do. We were all shocked by a recent 2 star review stating some of the party couldn’t stay! Definitely not our view or experience of this gorgeous property… If you’re thinking of booking laurel cottage, you won’t regret it. Laurel cottage is perfectly placed in a quiet part of Whitby but only 5 minutes from the famous whale bones and town. It’s so peaceful in the cottage. It manages to do the impossible - make a big spacious house feel so cosy. It’s so easy to relax in. Comfortable beds, sofas, 2 lovely open fires to light. Very well equipped with everything you need. Especially good for a mixed group of friends as so spacious with 2 separate lounges, big dining table and well stocked kitchen. Parking space is a real bonus in Whitby. Can highly recommend laurel house. Thank you for another lovely week - hope to return.

A broken planter could be removed to allow more space. The downstairs toilet door doesn’t close. Overflow from the roof was leaking. The twin room has no wardrobe to hang clothes up in. Plumbing in the bedroom with the shower needs attention. Heat detector was bleeping on arrival. On a positive the house is a good size for families and in a good location.

  • "We were disappointed when we arrived as the outside isn’t very well kept and in need of repainting."

When entering the property the first thing that hits you is the smell it’s awful, damp foisty smell. It didn’t feel nice at all and the smell was through the house . Our two other guests refused to stay and drove home. The parking is only suitable for a very small car which was very difficult for us as we have a large one and there is no other parking for the other guests. No outdoor space so not suitable for pets. The quality of the pillows and overall bedding very poor for the price of £400 plus a night? The only good thing I can say is it is very central. I had to leave the windows open to air the place but had to have the curtains shut as there is no privacy at all . I would suggest putting blinds up at the windows .very disappointed as the photos make it look very nice and that isn’t what you get when you arrive.

Handy for all attractions that Whitby has to offer, which are plenty. Parking for 2 cars at property was added bonus. Might be worth mentioning that Parking on street is restricted to permit holders only. Sign that says this is at bottom of street and is not obvious when arriving at night. This happened when we had moved 2nd car onto street for easy access for the 1st car. It might have said this on some correspondence but if so I missed it and apologies.

  • "Beautiful House in a great location for a short stay in Whitby."

Extremely clean. Really comfortable beds and plenty of cutlery/crockery in the kitchen for the amount of people it houses, and some beautiful welcome gifts such as chocolate, crisps, tea/coffee, biscuits. Really nice touch! 3 bathrooms, 2 of which are en-suites and there is a downstairs toilet in addition so there was no queuing for the loo - always a bonus when there is a lot of you! They had a cot and high chair available to us at short notice which was greatly appreciated. Now for the few downsides: Photos can be deceiving, they make the front parking space look plentiful, but you will be lucky to fit 2 cars up there, we managed it but they were cm apart so an uncomfortable squeeze. The other part of our party used the street parking and received a parking fine which was less than appreciated. The downstairs lounge could do with another sofa. Unless you are sat bolt upright on the one provided then there isn’t room for everyone to be comfortable and a couple had to sit on the floor. The twin room has no wardrobe, plenty of drawers but you don’t have anywhere to physically hang your clothes so you may need to share wardrobe space. By no means a big issue but just to make people aware so there are no surprises. The house is also stated as dog friendly, however there is no garden (which is fine because they are upfront about this) however the ‘enclosed courtyard’ has an extremely large gap under the gates that close it off and our dog managed to escape a few times so I wouldn’t say it’s the most secure for taking your furry friends. The bins were full to the brim. For a property that houses 8 people they could do with paying for an extra couple of wheelie bins so that there is ample space for waste. Lastly, you are expected to strip your own beds at the end of your stay to place in laundry bags but no laundry bags were provided, and really when you pay so much for a property you don’t expect to be doing half of the housekeeping! We’ve stayed in many properties and never had to do this before. I would recommend the property itself to people but I would be upfront about the above in the first instance.

Brand new kitchen and radiators installed since our visit last year and it’s really improved the property to an even higher standard . The kitchen is now a cosy place to cook and it’s extremely well appointed for a large group. The bedrooms are all good sized doubles and the mattresses and pillows are the comfiest- we’ve all slept so well. There is a lovely light in the property that seems to catch the sun all day long. We enjoyed the two lounge areas and used them both. It’s close to shops and cafes and the famous Bertram’s from your morning bread and croissants but also lovely and quiet too. A stones throw from west cliff and the beaches of Whitby. If you book here you won’t be disappointed- it’s a gem

  • "The house offered so much promise, but as others have feedback, the house has a serious damp issue, and little attempt has been put into the problem other than to use lots and lots of moisture collectors, which themselves give off a chemical smell."

Having stayed in various cottages, this property cost is well above what it should actually be charged at, because various rooms are looking tired, and in need of general upkeep, but worst of all, the cleaning of the property prior to our arrival was substandard. Bed side tables had dust and hair from previous visitors, banasters felt sticky, cobwebs on light fittings, and again the peeling paint, tired kitchen units, and damp downstairs, with the damp visible on walls throughout. Concerned that there is a plug socket on the first floor by the yellow sofa that is clearly a danger from the damp and peeling plaster. It's such a pity, the house is in a great location, although parking not made easy by the on street cars parked directly opposite, making it a challange to get cars in and out the property without care. If you take a step back, the photos make this house feel like what we paid, but as soon as you step closer, and the general cleaning and damp issue, you realise that the property does not cut the mustard, and being used as a cash cow and not value for money paid at peak season. Please, spend some time to give this property what it deserves, a proper makeover and maintenance to deal with the damp issue, and then it would be worth the prise that we currently feel we have overpaid for considerably. Whitby as always is a charming seaside town and great place to make a base, and this house could with effort be a real dream property, but our holiday escape has sadly left us all wanting.

I agree with previous comments, the property is brilliant but needs maintenance. The kitchen cabinet doors are badly worn, broken caftierre, chipped glasses, no working light in en suite first floor bathroom, full visitors book, noisy toilet on first floor, a front door you are asked not to use and entry is via the kitchen door which you have to slam to get to shut. Having said all that I would still stay there again!

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay and would visit us again. The location and the car parking is definitely a positive for our customers We doing property maintenance during January - March 2024 and during this time the kitchen will be fully replaced. It is in full working order for any bookings until then The cafetiere was reported during your stay and replaced. The glasses have been removed and replaced and the light has been fixed on changeover. We have not received any reports that the toilet is noisy but we will ask the maintenance team to check this out We didn't realise that the visitors book was full and will replace with a new one. Both the front and back door are in perfect working order and have keys to use for access. We prefer customers to use the back door as there is a hard floor area and it prevents the carpet at the front from becoming worn. We will ask the maintenance team to look at the door as we weren't aware that you need to slam it closed Once again, thank you for your comments. We hope to welcome you back in the future Property Owner

The accommodation was spacious, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The location is perfect for beach, harbour, town and eateries! We would like to feedback that the cleaning had been carried out to an average standard but could have been better (e.g. black mould growth in the 2nd floor shower, both around the sealant on the shower tray and on the shower hose, and the shower drain traps had not been cleaned). In terms of facilities and maintenance, we reported a few minor issues to the Maintenance contractors at the end of our stay, so hopefully these will be addressed for future guests. Overall, we were very satisfied with Laurel House, as it comfortably accomodated our requirements and we would recommend it for larger family breaks in Whitby.

  • "The house was spacious we had more than enough room for the family plus one dog."

The house lacked some finishing touches. When we arrived the last person that stayed clearly had a black dog and there was dark dog hairs over the carpet. The house needs some doing up. There is a damp problem thought the house mainly in the kitchen. The walls are scuffed and could all do with a coat of paint. The bathroom tap was loose, the door sticks and is a nightmare to open and close and the ceiling is peeling away. The house was cold and it’s the end of march it was hard to regulate the temperature downstairs and not over heat upstairs. We went out to buy logs for the fire to try solve the issue. I wouldn’t stay here again for the price I feel like they owners are lacking the attention to detail it needs. If they invested in the issues in the house it would be a lovely stay. We liked the fact there were some board games we could play on an evening It does supply everything you need including a washing machine and tumble dryer. It is well positioned in Whitby with just a small amount walk downhill to the town. Overall I think it’s over priced for the current condition of the house and area located personally I would stay further away from the coast as there’s not much to do in Whitby so you finding yourself driving everyday to find something to do.

It wasn't possible to get the downstairs warm without lighting both fires despite upstairs being warm. Poorly equipped with using items - only 2 dishwasher tablets so we had to wash up in the end; not enough toilet roll for each toilet; no dishcloth or towel in kitchen so we had to buy Jeyes cloths; no spare bin liners so had to buy some. This is irritating and comes across as petty. Kitchen also poorly equipped. There are lots of pots and pans but when you have a large property taking 6-8 people you need large items not just lots of them. There are no adequately large pots or saucepans (baking trays fine). I had to use 3 pots to make a single dish of fish stew for 6 people. We also couldn't do a stir fry as planned as only small/medium sized frying pans. The owners might want to try draining pasta or rice for 6-8 people in that undersized strainer! This is very poor - the owners haven't thought this through at all.

Hello there, Thank you for your helpful feedback - we were not aware that there was an issue with the heating timer so will arrange for this to be looked at (we have had a plumber out recently and thought the issue with the boiler/timer had been fully resolved). Thank you for letting us know about the situation with dishwasher supplies, toilet rolls and washing up items. We use a local cleaning and laundry company who leave out the welcome pack / toilet rolls etc as we do not live locally. The standing instruction to the cleaners is to leave sufficient supplies out for each booking, so we apologise that this did not happen for your visit and will chase this up with the cleaners. We want all our guests to feel comfortable, welcome and well-catered for at the property so are sorry that you felt otherwise. Your feedback on our kitchen equipment is also helpful and we will arrange for more pots and pans and strainers of a larger size to be available at the property when we next visit. Obviously we thought we had equipped the property thoughtfully and fully for our guests when we set everything up following our purchase and renovation of the house, but we are always happy to learn and improve our guests' experience, so thank you for taking the time to provide a full review and specific comments and thoughts.
