Clean and perfect for a 3 night girly catch-up. Just a caution that the stairs are very steep and the hot water in the shower on the first floor was scalding. Would book again

  • "When I was considering booking this property I was not aware of what was meant by a "Jack and Jill" twin room."

So I phoned the Sykes office for clarification. They told me that this comprised two single rooms sharing a common bathroom. As two of our party were single, not known to each other, each in their seventies and each particular about their personal privacy I described the room to them in the manner it had been described to me and they both said that with mutual agreement they would be happy with the arrangement. When we arrived at 11A I found that the property consists of three double rooms and one twin. The "Jack and Jill" twin simply does not exist! So agentleman had to volunteer to sleep on a sofa as the only way we could organise things. This was obviously unsatisfactory as he had paid for a single bed in a separate room. Looking on-line today it appears that this discrepancy has been pointed out twice in the past, the first time a year ago, yet the website description still remains the same. Also worthy of mention is the fact that at the time of our visit the first floor shower would be positively dangerous to small children as the temperature control is virtually unworkable and the and the unit seems to default to scalding hot.

  • "I’m writing this after having the conversation with the rest of our group."

Firstly on the web site you state that the stairs are steep, which they are, but they’re actually quite dangerous!! Your site also states that there are two twin bed rooms, there’s only one, which left two of our group a bit put out as they don’t like sharing a bed. The top toilet had towels on the floor like it hadn’t finished being cleaned. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms and kitchen were nice and clean. Obviously your property gets used quite a bit as it is looking tired, lots of scuff marks on the walls, the couches were very worn. Also there was no information booklet. Usually there’s information about the facilities, wifi, and the surrounding area. On the whole we had a lovely time. As I’ve said, these comments are from the group as a whole. Regards

Its clear to see its had some modernisation done. Slept 8 people fine with plenty of communal space. The kitchen/dining/sofa area make a nice social space. Steps are steep and not helped by the loose carpet on the 1st flight that was coming away from the grippers on a corner step. Felt like an accident waiting to happen. Cleanliness bedrooms/bedding were all clean. Downstairs in the kitchen area dog biscuits? Were found in the rug. A lighter and crisps were left on the dining chair. Luckily the party of 8 were adults so no hardship. I would use again for its location and space though. Nothing that put us off returning.

Cracked Windows, exposed stair grippers which cut feet, no laundry bags even though requested to put laundry in them. Beds old and uncomfortable, stair hand railed coming away from walls, radiators not working, no instructions how to use boiler or hob or anything else for that matter, coffee stains on walls, smoke alarm in kitchen constantly activated. Very poor response to complaints, no contact available with caretaker or owner agents.

Thank you for your feedback and bringing this to our attention We want all our customers to have a great holiday with us and if any issues occur, we are on hand to help at anytime during your stay Replacing windows in Whitby is very difficult. We have to apply for planning permission to do this and need a suitably qualified contractor to complete the work. As a precaution, we have added perspex to the windows to prevent any issues while we continue to arrange this work being completed The handrail was fixed immediately and a carpet fitter visited the property to replace the carpet. They have used gripper rods which is common practice but have been made aware of your feedback The smoke alarm is a standard one and is in full working order. The beds are in excellent condition however any feedback about furniture and comfort can be down to personal preference We are sorry about the coffee stains on the wall. The laundry bags are now available. The cleaners should have picked these issues up and we have given you a goodwill gesture that you accepted after your stay Once again, thank you for your comments Property Owner

As previously said the stairs are very steep to the upper floors. Also although having 4 bedrooms there are only two bathrooms the 3rd on the top floor is a toilet and sink - this is fine for a family but 4 couples would struggle. There is free parking opposite the house but at peak times parking can be a nightmare. On the first night we had a maintenance issue but this was fixed within the hour.

I do have a photograph I can send you I have taken to show you what the cupboard was like. The stairs carpets could do with replacing. The main problem was that the windows in the house would not open which is a fire hazard there was only three windows in the full property that opened, one was in the second floor double bedroom, one in the first floor lounge and the attic bedroom skylight would open. I consider this to be a fire hazard because if something would have happened in the property we would not be able to escape by the windows this needs immediate attention the windows will not open because they are paint closed. I will be making my own enquiries to see if this is legal. The stairs in the property are extremely steep so I would advise anyone who struggles to get up normal stairs will certainly struggle to get up three flights of a really steep stairs so please be aware. I would not grade the property 4 stars, very disappointing for a £1020 for 3 nights !

Thank you for your feedback, we do take all feedback onboard and can confirmed that we have had a full fire risk assessment completed on the property and we do feel that our property description is a true representation of the property, we will follow up on the area you have mentioned. we were a party of 8 adults of various ages and all had plenty of space in the property which also has two bath rooms and a top floor cloak room for convenience. there were ample towels for all, and the kitchen was well equipped with everything you would need. The property was clean and warm, which was welcoming in late December. We would like to also recommend the restaurant on the Endeavor replica ship, the Orlop, the food and service was very good and the atmosphere very comfortable and relaxing. We would recommend this property to both young families and adult family groups alike, but bear in mind the stairs were the main talking point LOL :) If you have trouble with mobility the stairs up to the upper floors could be a problem and this was pointed out prior to our booking. The kitchen , lounge area downstairs is pleasant , however we did have a few issues . The bedding smelt damp , it was clean but smelt like it hadn’t been dried properly . The quality of the bedding is poor as is the towels . The place really needs double glazing , some of the window panes are cracked , and the noise from outside is loud , the house is directly opposite a boat yard which starts work at 7.30 , so if you fancy a lie in beware of the noise ! It would have been good to have known that parking nearby is suspended from July 19 until March 20 , not the owners fault , but it does make parking anywhere near the house very difficult, the nearest car park is only half open and full all the time .

  • "Everything in the listing was as described."

Unfortunately, there were several issues that left us feeling disappointed. The worst was a bad smell coming from the toilet drain in the attic bathroom. The owner arranged for someone to come and try to fix this on the Tuesday of our stay, but the smell was still present for the rest of our visit. In the second floor bathroom the sink plug didn’t close properly, so we couldn’t run a sink of water for washing or shaving. In the first floor bathroom the shower tray was slow to drain away. On inspection there was a large amount of matted hair and muck in the drain - it obviously hadn’t been cleaned for a while. Elsewhere we would have liked more mugs to save having to wash them by hand for each meal. Also a couple more pans and a grill rack would have been useful, and a teapot! Finally, it would have been nice to have instructions for which bin to put out and when. Only by chance were we able to do the recycling on the correct day.

Thank you so much for your feedback, we are sorry that your experienced an unpleasant smell during your stay, we have had the property checked by two trades people and it wasn't anything to do with the property itself but due to some council led external works happening in the local area. It was very clean and I think my only suggestion to give it that extra special touch would be to maybe include a little welcome pack with some basics such as tea, coffee, sugar, milk, bread etc and a few toiletries in the bathrooms but generally we had no complaints. The adverts were very clear and honest about the stairs and the higher you go the steeper they get. The stairwell was quite narrow so it was a little difficult getting luggage to the bedrooms but it kept us all fit. I contacted Sykes to enquire about a late check out, they were very professional and prompt in the way the call was handled and managed to get this agreed with the owner for us. A brilliant time was had by all and we would definitely recommend the house and Sykes.

Had to wait outside until a passing photographer who worked for Sykes was able to open the safe. We were informed by yourselves that the cleaner had trouble that morning. The kitchen was not clean : remains of a dog biscuit on the floor, dirty crockery and cutlery in the cupboards, crumbs and food left by the previous tenant in the cupboards. I did not expect to start cleaning floors cupboards and set the dishwasher off to clean all the dirty crockery and cutlery upon arrival. Upstairs in the first bedroom the light inside the wardrobe was just hanging by the wires and the screws left in the wood. During the holiday 2of the older children aged 8and 10 years became upset when they couldn't open the doors to the bedroom and bathroom. Towels had to be placed on the floor to prevent a repeat of these accidents. When reading the previous tenants notes in the feedback book the same incident had occurred. This proves that Sykes do not take any notice of the feedback or have the courtesy to answer the phone message my daughter left after her child was trapped in the bathroom.

It is over 4 floors so a good climb to bed if your on the top floor, lovely views though when you do get there. You do have to duck a lot but the listing does say that. One guest was over 6ft so didn’t even attempt the top room. The stairs are steep so anyone that struggles with steps I wouldn’t suggest this house. My family loved it. The kitchen is lovely and has everything you need, plenty of plates, glasses, cutlery etc. Lovely fluffy towels on the beds ready for the very stylish bathrooms. Shower on 1st floor is amazing! Lovely bed linen, comfortable sofas Perfect location with a short walk into the town. We were lucky to visit during the regatta which was great. Also good crab fishing spot right outside the house which was great. We did crab fish at the Fleece as suggested by the owner.
