  • "Unfortunately this cottage could be amazing but the cleanliness lets it down the living room was covered with large cobwebs some rubbish left under sofa boarded up front window the most uncomfortable dirty looking sofa with two grubby cushions the kitchen sink drainer is rusty as are the toilet brush holders small things that could be made right."

Second floor shower squirting out all over the place a empty food box left on top of wardrobe top floor bedroom and stained pillows which I have took photos of this cottage needs a deep clean it is a shame it is not looked after properly

  • "Was Almost perfect for what we needed, the only negative for us was the £77 it cost to park the car for the week."

There was 4 adults and two young children in our party. One child is autistic so can be very noisy at times. The property was in a way ditached so it didnt upset anyone. Having a double bed and a twin bed room on the 1st floor and a mirror image on the second alowed the two kids to sleep on different floors so not winding each other up at night. To living rooms, each with a TV one on the ground floor and one on the third floor gave us, grandma and grandad a rest from kids. A toilet on all 4 floors brill. and unusually in Whitby these days Two sets of door keys. Not ideal if your after 5 star cottage, but great for a familly with kids

  • "Very spacious accommodation, not a fan of the leather sofa in living room looked old and grubby, cushions were misshapen but didn't use very often."

Kitchen would benefit from a deep clean especially the table. Beds very soft with memory foam mattresses, double bed bed on 1st floor needs attention, one of the end lats was built upside down so the mattress was lopsided. Noise from adjoining cottage (47a) above kitchen at times. Entrance to cottages could do with tidying up and made to look a bit more appealing but is apparently owned by private residents next door, otherwise a very enjoyable stay and nothing that stopped us rebooking both cottages for next year to bring all the family.

  • "Great location in Whitby."

The bathrooms were good, shame no loo roll was provided. The kitchen was ok, not very well stocked for the size of the house and the worktops were sticky. The alley way to the property gives a very bad impression and could easily be made to look better. The lounge was very dirty and had cobwebs everywhere, it also had a very musty smell. I understand this is an old property but with a thorough cleaning would be a nicer place to stay.

  • "We visited Baxtergate as a family and found the house was absolutely perfect for what we wanted."

It was the ideal location - minute walk to cafes, shops, pubs and seafront. This was brilliant for my father who struggles to walk great distances. The house was clean, comfortable, spacious and had everything we needed. We really enjoyed our stay here.

  • "We had a lovely weekend at Baxtergate and thoroughly enjoyed the central location."

However we found that the house was very under-resourced with equipment. Considering that the property sleeps 8 people, there were only 4 wine glasses and 4 egg cups and not enough mugs or table glasses for a group of 8. There were a large number of champagne glasses but sadly these are not overly practical for everyday use. The pans were all small and hard to fit in enough food for 8 people and there were no baking dishes which meant we had to buy one over the weekend to cook what we needed to. There was no salt and pepper in the property or tea or coffee. It was strange that there were no bedside lights or bedside tables so that you couldn't read in bed easily. One of the bathroom showers had a leak which made it hard to use. The use of automatic lighting in the corridors made it feel like student accommodation and overall the house felt quite sterile - there were no pictures on the wall anywhere. Whilst these might seem like small points, they made the accommodation feel basic. We have stayed in many rented houses during our lifetime and sadly, Baxtergate was a lower quality than most. Overall, whilst the location is great I would hesitate to recommend Baxtergate as a comfortable house to stay in.

  • "Great location and need to plan dropping off bags as it’s pedestrian only zone 10:30-4pm and traffic starting 8am which is noisy."

Shame we had to pay for parking at £10 per day. House is well maintained and everything you need for a great stay. Missed not having a bath as both bathrooms are shower only. Children enjoyed the top floor living space.

  • "On the day of arrival the refuse bin was overflowing with untied bags."

On a changeover day this should have been addressed. The rubbish was not collected until the following Wednesday, two days before departure therefore leaving nowhere to place our rubbish. No recycling bin provided. Did not help that we came back from a day out to find a property sharing the alleyway had dumped their untied bin bags literally on the doorstep. Agree with some other reviews regarding general cleanliness, in particular cobwebs around walls and ceilings, skirting boards grubby. Also totally in agreement regarding some windows that do not open with only one means of escape, ie the front door, which was swollen and let in quite a draft. On the upside, the heating worked well. The sofa in the living room incredibly uncomfortable. Seen better days, way too low and soft, may as well have been sitting on the floor so we had to bring in hard chairs from the kitchen. One thing that does need pointing out as this is not mentioned at all in the property description is the fact that the “kitchen” sink is not actually located in the kitchen, but in the utility room. This is accessed by three considerably steep steps which proved a problem for us as three of the party have difficulty with mobility. A hazard if you have to negotiate the steps with a boiling pan. Also, this was the first time we have stayed in Whitby and have not been provided with a parking permit.

Mouse spotted in alleyway. Dirty old suitcase and tables in alleyway. “Welcome” mat very dirty not very welcoming! No bin liners in bathroom bins. No mattress or pillow protectors. Oven and extractor fan covered in grease. Vacuum cleaner full and smelly. Smoke alarms going off when using oven as grease burning causing smoke. Offensive smell in 3rd floor bathroom. Beds very uncomfortable. Cracked plastic on front window. Makes property look very dirty and unkempt. Having to strip off bedding from beds. Not sure why this has to be done? Lighting where fridge is not working. Freezer needed defrosting. Stains on lounge carpet. Cobwebs in corners of rooms and in kitchen. Front door difficult to open. Overall very dissatisfied.

It is nicely furnished with very comfortable beds ... Four toilets, one on each floor is very convenient. But...... There is no parking, it cost myself and my daughter £10 per 24 hrs to park in nearby car parks. There is no outside space. There is little ventilation, most of the windows do not open. The kitchen needs more equipment, eg, no chopping board, peeler, cleaning materials, serving dishes, mixing bowl, whisk, colander, place mats... There are no mirrors other than a small one in each bathroom. There is only one entrance, the front door, the property is over four floors,I was a little nervous about means of escape, though there were fire extinguishers.
