  • "Lovely cottage."

We were a party of five and none of us have anything negative to say about this accommodation. An ideal location, just over the swing bridge in the old town. All the beds were comfortable and there was fantastic central heating, needed on the weekend that we were there. A very welcome "welcome pack" was provided. Could not get Freeview on the TV but watched live TV through the apps although we were out most of the time. Only a short walk across the bridge to many bars and eateries. I can recommend the Duke of York, bottom of the Abbey steps, for lovely food and good beer as well as the Pie and Mash cafe across the road. A very pleasant stay and would return to Foresters House in the future.

  • "Very clean with very good facilities."

Very good location. We had a few minor issues which were sorted quickly. Be aware the entrance to the courtyard is two shops down on the right (no car access, leave car with hazards on while unloading), there are steep steps going into the property and there is no garden. Parking is difficult but we parked in the W zone (scratch card), at the end of church street (free) if you can get a spot, and then in the endeavour car park. We got a spot about 11pm and didn't move the car again.

  • "Loved the character and location of the property and enjoyed my stay."

The only negative was the noise from outside audible in the front bedroom. Delivery lorries and council vehicles woke me from 6 am every morning (and pub stragglers in the early hours kept me awake). I can't blame the owners for this but it was a nuisance.

  • "There is rubbish all over the alley directly outside the front door which make you feel that you are entering a slum property."

Having talked to the neighbours opposite, they say this happens often as it it dumped by other holiday properties in the alley and then attacked by seagulls and rats leaving a huge mess that is a very unwelcome entrance. Inside the hallway smells. The flat was not cleaned thoroughly prior to our arrival. The dining table and kitchen floor was sticky and the chairs had crumbs all over them. The window sills are filthy in the kitchen and the pillow cases in the main room had marks on them. There’s no hair dryer! The tefal frying pan is so worn that the tefal is flaking off which is actually a Heath hazard and needs replacing. A point of concern- where is the fire escape?! There’s one exit. The windows are painted shut in the lounge which is a potential exit point. We have rented from Sykes in the past but this is the first time we’ve felt the need to complain. It is an expensive property for the standard. While we appreciate it’s an old flat it is overpriced and in need of attention- especially sorting out the rubbish problem with the neighbours.

  • "We have booked through Sykes many times over the years and have never had a bad property yet but this one was extra special."

What an amazing, lovely old building! The location was perfect, we could not have been nearer to all that Whitby has to offer and yes it was a little noisy first thing in the morning in the front bedroom but that's to be expected right in the heart of the town. The property has so much character and period features, the wonky floors gave us all a laugh as well as the extra large top step from the ground floor, but it all adds to the charm. Hats off to whoever fitted the kitchen too, would not have been an easy job! The kitchen was very well equipt, loads of glasses, cups, cutlery etc. The lounge was very comfy and cosy and a good place to relax after a long day of sightseeing. It was great to have the 2 bathrooms too and the whole place was spotlessly clean. Very comfy beds and lovely white linen and towels. We managed to get parked in the car park on Church Street, maybe 100 yards from the property (and only £9 for 24 hours) but as those who have been to Whitby before will know parking is at a premium unless you're on the outskirts so we were very pleased to get a space so close. We would not hesitate in booking this property again but I feel like I shouldn't have left such a glowing review as this lovely property will be booked up solid and I want to go again soon!

  • "This is definitely not a 5 star accommodation."

The property is in desperate need of some work. The skirting boards we're filthy in every room from muck to food stains/drips. The stairs/rails look like they hadn't been cleaned for months with black muck marks and a thick layer of dog hair gathering around thw bottom spinals. The kitchen is way smaller than perceived in the pictures, no cupboard space to store groceries, markings on the cooker had worn away so took a few attempts and a google search for instructions. The sofa cushions were so saggy and would just sag off the sofa as soon as you sat down leaving it very uncomfortable, sofa also needs a good hoover as bits and hair under cushions too. Space very tight in one of the twin rooms between beds making it difficult to get in and out, especially during night for the bathroom. Windows and sills were really dirty. Unable to open windows to let some fresh air in especially on a hot day. It was very noisy from delivery trucks and vans up and down street in main double bedroom and sitting room from as early as 5am each morning. Welcome parcel left with tea bags, biscuits and a fruit cake pleasant enough but would of been more useful to have milk and possibly a small loaf instead with a check in time of 5pm. I wouldn't recommend this property for those who find steps difficult due to stairs leading up to kitchen as they were steep with the top step beingva much bigger drop than rest. Padlock on bin outside is also not easy to use with having to pull a bar out to gain access after unlocking, again not recommended for those with grip issues. Main bathroom shower started to leak on Wednesday night straight through the light fitting in hallway between sitting room and kitchen. Had to make several phone calls and leave messages. Plumber arrived in quick time once reported. Parking is an absolute nightmare, scratchcard parking passes issued for week, allowing free parking in the W zones which were on the opposite side near the Whale Bones. Must compliment the clean bedding. Overall really disappointed as pictures are not a true reflection on size, decor/maintenance and cleanliness of the property.

Thank you for your comments, we value your feedback. We are sorry the cleaning was not up to the standard we would expect. Had you contacted us during your stay, we would have sent the cleaners back round to rectify the issues. The cleaning company have been contacted. Regarding the hob, thank you for your comments, we will get some new labels to make it easier to use. The windows can be opened so we will look into this to see if there is an issue. The property page on the website does clearly state that their are stairs so people are aware. The comments about the sofa have been passed on to to owner. This property is advertised at a 4 tick rating. We are once again sorry about the issue with the leak, the plumber attended quickly to resolve it. Thank you for your comments. Property Owner

  • "Great property."

Amazing location if you want to be central and nicely finished with blankets, linens and cushions. Kitchen also well eqipped with oil, salt, pepper, cafetiere etc. Great to have two barhrooms too. Shower was amazing. It is noisy early on ( as early as 6ish for the refuse collectors) due to the single glazing but we knew that from the reviews. TV was tricky and the DVD player didn't work at all-fortunately the weather was great so it wasn't a bother. Parking was the usual Whitby nightmare so just ended up paying to park (£9 per day). Biggest bugbear however was the check in time of 5pm and the check out time of 10am. Come on guys- thats a little tight isn't it? We felt like we lost two days. Surely check-in could be 3 and check out 11? Ultimately a lovely stay though- the best part of town with lovely shops, bars and restaurants all around.

Easy check in/out. All the little extras provided eg washing up liquid, salt & pepper, tea towel , oven mit. Perfect location, central but away from the main bar area so not noisy at all for Whitby. Beautifully clean and in a good state of repair. Only thing to replace would be a tin opener as the 2 provided don’t work. Excellent stay & property. We are regulars to Whitby and have stayed in quite a few apartments, this is definitely our favourite. We will be back.

So nice of the hosts to leave gifts, including tea, chocolates, cookies etc. We would certainly stay there again. There were some very minor issues, including loose internal door handles, etc, but otherwise we really recommend this place. The location is right in the middle of the centre of Whitby and the kind of property I could easily live in. It's an old building, so nothing is straight, but that's part of the pleasure with it's history.

This is the second year I have been in the same cottage, last year the cottage was filthy, this year was a lot cleaner but it's not just the cleanliness. The cottage is in need of quite a few cosmetic repairs which were also there last year. The ensuite tap was broken which was noted in the guest book in June. The main shower leaked through the ceiling. I would have expected a cottage this size would have more than one key and also the key safe number ought to be changed I used the same code as last year. I called into Whitby Yorkshire Coastal Cottages/Sykes to report the faults. Unfortunately what usually happens is the owners blame the agents and the agents blame the owners. Foresters House price has gone up again this year but it wasn't worth what I paid last year.

  • "This is a nice house, but we feel it should be made clear in the listing that it is above a shop, meaning that there is a steep flight of stairs leading to kitchen from front door."

The three bedrooms and the two bathrooms are then on the 2nd floor. Although there is a 'courtyard' mentioned, this is the cobbled entrance alley way. For those with dogs, it is shared and is not enclosed. There is no area for dog toileting. I walked our dog to near-by dog friendly beach every morning, before the crowds emerged in the street outside the house. As mentioned in previous reviews, there is street noise, more so for those in the front master bedroom. House is very well equipped kitchen wise and beds quite comfortable. I would not describe this as a luxury place to stay, but is nice. It isn't peaceful, but is a fun place to be in the nicer and less commercial side of the harbour in walking distance to Abbey, Cleveland coastal walk, harbour beach and main beach. There are many nice places to eat out, but most places currently require booking in advance. I found the main bathroom and kitchen floors to be dirty and had to clean old food from edges of kitchen to stop dog from sniffing and trying to get underneath. Bathroom floor was very grubby which was disappointing. Please note, that although advertised are parking permits for the property, I found a free parking space in the permit area on only one occasion in the 7 days we were there. (Please bare in mind that we stayed in peak summer time during school holidays). There are a very limited number of spaces for permit holders and they are a ten minute walk away. A local resident and businessman told us that local businesses are using these spaces, rather than them being available for visitors to Whitby. There is plenty of pay and display parking with long-stay car-parks that charge £9 for 24 hours. We did this on occasion. Or you can pay the council in advance for £7 per day tickets for council car parks. There is one row of about 30 spaces along Church Street that is unrestricted, but spaces rarely appeared. Be careful of the restricted area with-in the white lines though, as there is very poor signage that states 40 minute stay only. As a visitor, I was unaware and given a parking fine. All in all, it was a nice stay and would recommend, as long as you don't mind a quirky type house that is old and with very uneven floors. Just a little added cleaning would be appreciated prior to arrival.

  • "Two things: 1) Car parking is difficult, although the owners left parking "scratch cards" they failed to mention where the appropriate parking zones actually were - they took a bit of finding."

    2) The property is very old and, as a consequence, has very uneven floors and two flights of stairs within - anyone with mobility issues would have struggled in the property.

  • "The property was great, very convenient for bars, restaurants, shops and other amenities."

It was well equipped and comfortable. With that convenience though come a couple of drawbacks that could have been made clearer in the description; early morning noise and parking. Every morning from 06:00 street cleaners, refuse collectors and assorted commercial vehicles pass, and stop outside of, the property. As the master bedroom is at the front this is quite disturbing. Parking is also not straightforward; yes, the property comes with permits but the permit parking is on the other side of the river and is always very busy. The nearest car park is also busy, it was hit or miss as to whether a space would come free. Neither issue spoiled our holiday, but they could have been made clearer in the description however. The description also mentions a hamper of Yorkshire produce would be left for us on arrival, it wasn’t, this could be related to the current situation but again an explanatory note or updated description would have helped.

  • "The property desperately needs updating, in particular the front double bedroom should be double glazed."

The extractor fan in the en-suite is not working and no fire escape as only one entrance via the kitchen and all windows locked or bolted. Parking facilities in Whitby were confusing and cost of parking near the property very expensive. We were woken up early every morning by delivering drivers reversing alarms and engines and it was sometimes noisy at night with people talking and shouting outside. We don’t think the property was top end as advertised. The position was great being central, beds were comfortable and the lounge well furnished with comfortable settees. We loved Whitby and enjoyed exploring the Moors and coastal areas but would not want to stay in this property again.

Beds were so comfy and linens and towels lovely and clean. Nice a spacious for family gatherings. We thought the welcome basket was a lovely touch. However, we had an 11 month old baby and my grandmother who walks with a crutch with us, and the stairs leading to the property posed a problem. They were mentioned when booking, however I think it should really state how steep they are, as there was no pram access, and my grandma really struggled getting in and out even tho she is an able walker. Check in and out was far to late and early considering the keys need picking up and dropping off the other side of whitby. We were told the late check in was due to the cottage needing to be cleaned after guests which is fine, but to be fair, lots of previous guests items were in the cottage, so leads us to believe the cleaning wasnt that thorough. Location again we loved so nice to sit and watch the world go by in the cosy living room, however the noise was so bad, I understand it's an old cottage and restrictions might be in place for windows etc, but staying in a cottage which is sold as child friendly this surely should be a factor as it was far too noisy. So much so myself, husband and parents didnt sleep much at all during our entire 3 night stay. We did love the quirky feel of the cottage, and would stay again if it was just adults and able bodied people, however I dont think its suitable for small children and elderly people.
