  • "This is a great, warm and relaxing house, ideally located just outside Whitby town and harbour."

The decor is fresh and there is everything you need. Beds are large and comfortable with a dressing table and full length mirror in the master. The downstairs bathroom is clean with a bath and shower. The kitchen is again clean and has everything you would expect. The living room is fresh and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay here. Communication from owner was warm and friendly and we could have gone in earlier if we didn’t have such a long drive. The house is ideally located for all the tourist attractions within walking distance although the tour bus does go very near to the property - used to our advantage as Whitby is very hilly! We would definitely stay here again and recommend Helredale Retreat. 10/10

  • "We had a lovely stay at Helredale."

I did read about the previous niggles in earlier reviews, but they were obviously sorted by the time we got there (mid May 2024) as we had nothing to complain about at all. It was very clean and tidy. The garden was perfect for our small dog, who will find the smallest of gaps to escape through! It was completely secure and that's our priority when choosing a holiday home. The kitchen is really well equipped. Wifi and Sky TV worked well (we didn't have great weather so were reliant on that in the evenings). It's literally a 15-20 minute walk into the heart of Whitby, so ideally located to walk into the town. You're able to see the abbey from the back bedroom. Off street parking worked well, the road is busy but the double glazing must be very high grade because you can't hear any traffic at all once in the house. I found it really great value for money and the pics gave a very true reflection on reality, so we got exactly what we expected.

  • "The house is on a busy main road and is a mid terraced house and not the cottage I was expecting but it is a very nice place and with some maintenance would be so much better."

There are holes in the lounge walls, with metal washers, there is trunking that's not needed and there is no architrave on the en suite bathroom door. Unfortunately the sink in en-suite is difficult to use as it is on top of the toilet cistern and there is no room. The showers are both very good. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped - I cannot comment on the oven or hob as we did not use either but everything else was great. We enjoyed our stay even with the maintenance issues as it's very easy from the location to get to all the attractions Whitby has to offer. One more thing of note there is an information folder provided by the owner but this needs updating.

Hi, thank you for your feedback. We will check the frying pans etc, the normal pans were all new at the start of the season but frying pans seemed ok but i will check again. we will also sort the grouting out in the bathroom. sorry the price has gone up but in fairness it is one of the cheapest properties to rent out in whitby but again we will look into this for the future Property Owner

  • "Sometimes flush upstairs would run uncontrollably long after it should have ended."

Might be worth warning people about the noise the macerator makes....my husband nearly had a heart attack the first time it went off!! Haha.thank you. Bins very confusing put green bin out wed night but no one collected...left it out until we left Friday . Different counties have different systems for recycling...we didnt know what to do!

hi Lynn, yes mascerators are great in the sense that they allow you to have a shower and toilet wherever you want one in the house , but the flipside is that they do make a noise when they pump. We have used non branded ones at other properties in the past, but this one is a SaniFlo pro (about £650 worth) so is the best on the market. The only reason it would contiune to flush would be if the tap was slightly running or indeed if the toilet itself was filling unnecessarily, i will get our handyman to check this out on friday. Yes the bins are different in each county, however we pay extra for the council to come down the drive and take the relevant bin from under the window on the given day, so there is no need to put any bin out. This is why we do not have any instructions in the house about putting bins out (to allow you to get on with enjoying your holiday with minimum impact) other than that i do hope that you enjoyed your stay and would welcome you back at any point in the future. Thanks again for the 100% feedback, cheers chris Property Owner

  • "The accommodation was in a good location for just being able to walk into Whitby however it is on a very busy main road and there was a lot of traffic noise and being a warm week and the master bedroom at the front we felt unable to leave windows open at night due to the traffic noise."

We did move to the back bedroom but the bed was really uncomfortable and the springs could be felt. On stripping the bed at the end of the week we realised it had not even got a mattress protector on and the mattress was quite stained. On a positive note the master bed was very comfortable. We always take our own Dyson cleaner with us as it is light and cordless and some vacuum cleaners in properties tend to be quite heavy and on hoovering the carpet in the living room the cannister which collects the dust became full of dog fur. I had a dog with me but it certainly was not her fur as she has short white fur and this was long black fur.

hi sorry about that, i will pass this on to the cleaners as all mattresses did have protectors on at the start of this year, so will ask them where that one is? i will also instruct them to make sure that they use the industrial hoover that is in the back porch as this will be better than the one they bring themselves. Apologies for their incompetence Property Owner

However this year we were very shocked to find that neither bathroom had any toilet paper. All of us were desperate to use the facilities after a long drive and numerous traffic jams. So my advice is to have your toilet roll handy for when you arrive if you have travelled some distance and are in desperate need for the loo.

Thanks For the Feedback Leonora, we agreed that the sofa was getting tired, so we purchased a new suite and new armchair in February from beevers for the start of this season. Both of us have been very happy with what we found and have had a great long weekend. The cottage was clean, warm and comfortable with good facilities and even though it's a 5–10-minute walk from the centre the onsite parking makes life so much easier than staying in the centre and having to find and pay for a parking space. Cottage was clean. Had all facilities needed. Wasn't to noisy with traffic on the Rd. But I did not sleep well this is not the Cottages fault but I myself have Spine issues and need a firm mattress. The mattresses where very soft I actually ended up sleeping on floor at one point. The sofa also was to uncomfortable for myself with the way it was shaped. Needs a blackout blind or curtains in the front bedroom as all the lights shine through. This is why I only give 2 on comfort.

It’s located just over the main bridge with a short walk right down the bank into Whitby town, the retreat itself has everything and more. The main bedroom has the best bed I have ever slept in with a shower and toilet room we just used the one downstairs. The second bedroom never got used but has another double bed with single bunk above it. The main bathroom downstairs has a lovely bath with mega hot water for after those days of walking or just jump in the shower. The gardens To the front you can park two cars outside on the drive so no paying to park or spend time looking for a space. To the rear is an enclosed garden with views to the abbey in distance. There is a shop as described in the pack a short walk up the bank to left, just past this is a play park with plenty of space to walk the dog in the morning. For nice quiet night we walked to the half penny pub just 8 minutes past the shop along the road. The food is lovely especially the steak and there are tables where you can take you pet with you. Chris the owner is very helpful and even offered to let us stay in the retreat till late on our last day. Will definitely stay here again. Regards Michael, Sarah and Bailey the dog

Kitchen had plenty of cupboard space and plenty enough plates cups etc… the family bathroom is downstairs which was handy having a toilet downstairs! They is a small utility room/coat room which led to a enclosed garden which was perfect as we took our dog. A bonus with off road parking for two cars, a rare find for Whitby. Location good, 15 minute stroll to harbour. Two small points for us, the dining chairs were uncomfortable. We realise they foldaway due to space restrictions, but better quality (stronger) would be better. Secondly, on holiday we do cater for ourselves mainly and we found there was a lack of basic cooking equipment e.g. baking tray, roasting pan, jug and a casserole dish would be appreciated. However overall this is a lovely property and would not hesitate to return.
