Before we could shower both shower heads had to be cleaned(caked in black mould) kitchen sink, crockery, cutlery all had to be cleaned too. Bed linen was also “grubby”.

Sorry that you experienced this. If you had called as soon as you noticed I could have got the cleaning company to come back and rectify the problems. Property Owner

  • "While it was unfortunate that the property was not cleaned from the previous occupants, the property needs a deep clean, reseal of shower as mouldy at end of tray, fix draughty windows and new bedding and coasters."

The cleaners left a dirty oven glove hanging on the oven and the washing machine also requires cleaning. The hairdryer shows signs of overheating as it was melted around edge and the edge of the attachment was totally melted. There was also sticky stuff in the basket inside the wardrobe. On the plus side it is in good location with a great viewand a parking space, but would not return to this apartment.

Sorry that you feel that way, the cleaning issue was rectified as soon as you called me. I will look into the other issues but I do feel that this review is harsh. The property has amazing facilities coffee machines, full size fridge freezer, washer dryer, smart TV. Property Owner

  • "IMPORTANT RE LIFT AND SHOWER ACCESS: To the owner and Sykes: GIVE PEOPLE THE LIFT INFORMATION IN ADVANCE!"

See other reviews below. I got an email from Sykes pre-arrival with all necessary information re keys and entry etc EXCEPT about the lift. It promised a text from the owner on the day of arrival. I didn’t get one. Sykes had sent another email to me with the lift info, which I did not receive because I do not use email on my phone, and only saw when I got home. You get a key to a door on the left of the building where there is no lift. There is another door for other apartments to the right side of the building, which the outer door-key ALSO fits, which is not obvious at all. The lift is there! So I struggled (I’m partially disabled) up three flights of stairs with baggage, thinking that there was no lift. Thankfully my friend realised a 3rd floor door led across the outside of the building and we realised the lift was there and then tried the key in the other ground-floor door. See the reviews below: Mar 2023, Jun 2023, July 2021, and Jan 2022 (when they never found the lift). This is ludicrous. There is no sensible reason for omitting the lift access information from that sent in advance. And clearly Sykes and the owner do not read the reviews or have not acted on the feedback. Sykes: THIS IS VITALLY IMPORTANT FOR DISABLED PEOPLE, and annoying for everyone. There is so little accessible accommodation in Whitby and many disabled people will opt to stay at this apartment. RE THE SHOWER: The photo of a walk-in shower makes it look fairly accessible, but the shower tray and screen are too long for the size of the room. There is only an 18-inch gap between the end of the fixed screen and the wall. My shoulders are wider than that and I therefore had to walk in sideways facing the wall and then step backwards over the shower tray. This would prevent people with greater disability from safely accessing the shower – and there is no grab rail. (Mentioned in Oct 2021). To Sykes and the owner – grab rails are not expensive additions, and when this shower needs replacing, a shorter screen would be sensible. And I previously booked a Whitby property with an accessibility statement with all measurements, which may help. There are people I know who would not have been able to use that shower. These simple things will get you more repeat bookings, but a little thought and extra information is crucial to avoiding anxiety and at worst an inaccessible apartment for disabled people. Contrary to a previous review the flat itself was very clean, but I always check the beds and the mattress protectors needed a shake (!) and did not look as though they had been washed. These should be washed between every visit. A minor niggle was that the toilet roll holder had a bit of old cheap spring at one end so it was unusable. I don’t understand how these cheap and broken things are not fixed. I am sad to write the above because the apartment is lovely, was very well-equipped, and apart from the above points, a Godsend for disabled or elderly or ill people. It is an almost flat 10-minute walk to the town and swing bridge and has parking right next to the building. The views over the river and to the harbour are fabulous, and to sit and watch gulls, cormorants, ducks and shags right outside, and steam trains, and the lights of the town at night was wonderful. So please, Sykes, and Kerrie, get the above sorted. It may help future bookings (and more importantly avoid even more repetitions of the problem) if you respond to this review to say that the above issues have been sorted. Not everyone reads or scrolls down these reviews.

  • "Lovely, spacious apartment."

Very well kitted out, and nice and clean. And whilst only 10-15 minutes walk to the town centre (15 mins to bottom of the 199 steps to the Abbey), it's location means it is nice and quiet. We couldn't even hear the seagulls! Having its own parking spot is a big help too. Views over the harbour, and the railway line, so you get to see the steam train every morning. Supermarket only a 5min drive. Whitby has plenty to offer, but if you want to eat anything other than fish and chips in the evening, book a table a couple of nights ahead

Thank you so much for your review, we’re glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "The apartment was situated on the top floor of a three storey block."

It had a good view of the marina, the central car park and the steam railway line; by standing close to the window it was possible to see over the harbour and out to sea. Its location meant it was in a quiet position. The apartment was exceptionally well equipped, with everything one would expect from a holiday let and, in some areas like the kitchen, more. The walk to the town centre, with all its facilities, takes fifteen minutes. All tourist attractions and shops are within walking distance of the apartment. All in all, an excellent experience.

A short and lovely walk into the centre of whitby with a great view over the river leading into the harbour. The parking space for the apartment is well located, although whilst there is a lift it is on the other side of the block which requires you to walk across the fire escape to get to the apartment. We did have workman working on the roof via the fire escape from 08:00 into the afternoon for 4 days which caused a noise nuisance. The TV is a smart TV, however it does not have the latest apps available and can struggle to handle data transfer whilst streaming. I don't think it's an issue with the wi fi itself, more with how much data the TV can handle via wifi?

The little touches made it extremely comfortable and not having to move the car was an added bonus for Whitby as it only took 5 minutes to walk into the centre. The space was enormous and each room was tastefully decorated but not too garish. The bathroom had a lovely hot shower that for once not leak out at the end. The kitchen was well equipped and the coffee machine was an added bonus. The bed was very comfortable at the end of the day after a day of walking, drinking and eating. The views from all the windows were amazing, really showcasing Whitby, especially the steam train coming in and leaving each morning. Thank you Kerrie. We hope to be back soon.

Great to have a dedicated parking space, the car did not move for a week. It would be helpful to have clear instructions regarding access to the lift in the joining block of apartments. Also the apartment was very cold on our arrival and took time to warm up. It would be more welcoming to have arrived to a warm apartment. There is a fault on the oven that needs resolving. The oven turns off after around 30mins. We contacted the owner who kindly offered to sort this however we established the owner was staying in the apartment the following week so the oven was not a big problem for us and could be resolved then. Many thanks, David.

Great view over the Harbour and just a 10/12 minute walk into Whitby centre. We felt a little annoyed that we couldn't have a little heat on in the evenings, its seems the owner controls the heating by Hive or some such and a couple of the evenings were chilly and we had no way of warming the room. We paid almost £900 for 3 nights and didn't expect to be restricted heat wise.

Hi Pamela, The controls are on the front of each radiator, the only time we ever control it is if the property is left vacant. A phone call during your stay could have cleared that up straight away. Sorry for the confusion. Property Owner

  • "The accommodation was as expected and comfortable however the total lack of information regarding entry to flat was unacceptable."

When we arrived there was no information as to which key box was for our flat. It turned out to be the one labelled XIII for flat 6! The details stated that there was a lift but there was no sign of one in our block. The lift is in the ajoining block and then there is an outside corridor on each floor joining the 2 blocks which we finally discovered ourselves. The key to our block also opened the ajoining block but again we had to discover this for ourselves. The parking for our block was labelled underneath and again the key opened this. However there was no space labelled for flat 6. We entered the flat and looked around for information but there wasn't any obvious (we later found a folder in a drawer under the TV with information on the dishwasher and dvd player and out of date information on the wifi). In the end we had to phone sykes who had to phone the owner to find out where we were to park. All of this information should have been given to us along with the key number. The last thing anyone wants after a long journey is to have these problems. I feel entry to the flat, parking and access to lift are ALL very important and this should be dealt with so that other customers don't have to have the same hassle.

The property

Found in the traditional seaside town of Whitby, is this splendid third floor apartment, located just a few minutes’ walk from the centre and overlooking the River Esk that splits the town in two halves.

With its modern décor and bright rooms, this apartment is a delight to stay in, and with two bedrooms it is a great size for a small family, or a holiday with friends, with lift access as well for those less able to manage the stairs.

After coming through the front door, take off your sandy shoes, and sink into the sofa in the open-plan living space for a well-earned rest, while your other half sets about getting your evening meal prepared for a quiet night with picturesque views of the harbour below at sunset.

Moving to the other side of the apartment, you’ll see the fantastic king-size for you to snuggle up in later on, with a wardrobe there for you to hang up your things and make yourself at home, while the twin room down the hall has two single beds, ideal for the kids or extra friends.

The well-sized bathroom contains a walk in shower.

The property comes with an off-road parking space for one car, and access to the third floor is via the stairs or a lift, so it can be suitable for those with any range of mobility.

There is a diverse range of activities and attractions in Whitby, with the obvious choice being a trip to the beach, as Whitby is home to some of UKs best beaches, with Whitby Beach being about one mile walk from the apartment and why not carry on up the sandy shore all the way to Sandsend for a relaxing beach stroll.

Recently named Britain’s most romantic ruin, is Whitby Abbey, set on a cliff overlooking the town, holding over 2,000 years of history in its stone walls, home of saints, a king’s burial place and the inspiration for Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, this abbey is a must see for those interested in English heritage.

The town is surrounded by the North York Moors and is a haven for walkers with plenty of signposted and maintained routes available for those visiting, with opportunities to hire bikes or explore via horse-back riding as well so there is surely something to suit everyone.

Great for exploring the North Yorkshire coast, this apartment will be an excellent home-away-from-home to enjoy with your loved ones as you get to know the scenic town of Whitby.
