  • "I understand wooden floors create dust but the floors had not recently been dusted around the edges, especially behind furniture ie bedside cabinets, skirting boards and stair treads."

Dust contains human skin cells and as you ask your guests to strip bedding to protect staff, please do your guests the courtesy of clearing up previous guests skin cells. Otherwise a perfect stay in a charming well equipped cottage. Will return but bring a microfibre duster

Lovely well equipped accommodation just a short ten minute walk to the harbour. Just had breakfast at the cottage,as most nights ate at The Granby pub for our evening meals. It was also a plus to have your own parking space right out side the property. As other reviews have said stairs could be a issue for the less mobile especially if you had the first floor twin room with the main bathroom being on the ground floor. That said we would defiantly stay there again. Thanks, Steve

In a good central but quiet location. We enjoyed our stay. Whitby was an ideal location for exploring the coast. We used the good local bus that stopped nearby so really did not need to move the car. Everything was of good quality we especially appreciated the comfortable beds and extensively equipped kitchen.

  • "We had a lovely stay at Mews Cottage."

The decor is very tasteful, the beds were comfortable and having a designated parking spot is a bonus. The directions were excellent so that we were able to easily drive to the property. Just a few comments, which in our opinion, would have enhanced our break. We would have appreciated a welcome pack, providing milk and a few basic items. Having stayed at many holiday rentals, this is the only one which hasn't provided one. Also it would be a nice touch if a basket of travel size toiletries were provided. Again, this is something that many properties supply. We were also surprised to be asked to strip our beds before departure. The check in time of 4pm is a little late. These extra touches would take the experience up from very comfortable to excellent. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at Mews Cottage.

Glad you enjoyed your stay in Whitby and thanks for your feedback. We have been looking into a welcome pack, and are struggling to find a local company that can include fresh local produce, such as milk, and as we do not live local, we can't do this ourselves. We are in discussions with the house keeper regarding the stripping of the bed. Property Owner

  • "There is no mention of how steep the stairs are in the property and if we had known we wouldn't have booked it."

After a long car journey and late check in it would have been nice to have a small welcome pack of milk, tea and coffee. The coffee in the left over jar in the cupboard was stuck in the bottom. It would be nice to have full size toilet rolls or a couple of replacements rather than very little left in each bathroom. Maybe you should put cleaning products in the cupboard as we went to clean everything down at the end of our stay to find the sprays but nothing to clean with. There were no instructions left in the cottage about recycling and the note to strip the beds was to put the bedding in the bags provided. No bags were provided.

Thanks for your feedback. With the property being old the stairs are steeper then modern properties, we will add a note on the website to mention this. We have been looking into a welcome pack, and are struggling to find a local company that can include fresh local produce, such as milk, and as we do not live local, we can't do this ourselves. There should have been new and spare toilet rolls, and cleaning clothes, this is being taken up with the cleaners. Property Owner

  • "A very nice cottage in a good location."

The parking space is a real bonus. The sitting room is very comfortable and nicely decorated. Good, powerful showers in the bathrooms and comfy beds. Good wi-fi. Very big, modern kitchen, though we mainly used it for tea & coffee, we didn’t really do any cooking as there are so many good restaurants within a few minutes walk. We quite liked that stairs are behind a door making the upstairs rooms feel separate and private. I couldn’t give top marks for cleanliness and maintenance because of a few niggly things: One of the first things we noticed was that one of the curtains on the rail near the dining table was only hanging by its middle rings. We were also not keen on the grubby, used washing up sponge in the kitchen and part used toilet rolls in the bathrooms. We also found a used cotton bud on the bedroom floor. We have stayed in many holiday cottages and would have to say that his one felt very much as though it is a business for the owner rather than personal. In previous properties we’ve had baskets of local produce left for us, some have even left beer & prosecco but most importantly milk. We had a seven hour drive to reach the cottage arriving late on Friday afternoon, a pint of milk in the fridge would have been very welcome. But these are just minor things and I don’t want to appear negative, overall we would definitely recommend the cottage.

We have taken on board your comments, and we plan on replacing the curtains and poles, in the living area. There should have been new and spare toilet rolls, and this is being taken up with the cleaners. We have been looking into a welcome pack, and are struggling to find a local company that can include fresh local produce, such as milk, and as we do not live local, we can't do this ourselves. • "A very lovely cottage in a perfect location."

Everything inside was to a high standard and I would very much recommend this cottage as a holiday destination. However there were a few downsides, firstly (as mentioned in another review) there was no welcome pack - even a bottle of milk is much appreciated and the fact that the first thing you see as you walk in, is a bag asking you to strip the beds and put the towels in it citing coronaviros is not acceptable in my view. You don't pay a decent amount to stay in a cottage and then be expected to do much of the work yourself....especially now we are not in the height of the pandemic. It would have been useful to mention in the details how steep the stairs are up to the rooms and we did have the problem of one of the residents telling us off for using an unallocated parking space despite the fact it is right in front of the cottage and wouldn't be used by anyone else. Finally the check in time of 4pm could do with a review. I would have thought 3pm latest is more appropriate

Thanks for your comments, we have been looking into a welcome pack, and am struggling to find a local company that can include fresh local produce, such as milk, and as we do not live local, we can't do this ourselves. Regarding the laundry, I see your point and will have a word with the cleaner and see what they say. Apologies for the over zealous resident. It remained empty for the whole of our stay whereas we had used it in the two years previously. We originally booked this property for the 2 spaces advertised.

Due to circumstances out of our control the new owners of the shared car park had decided to assigned car parking spaces to each property, previously there were no markings, so ew could fit 2 cars in front of the cottage. Now the car park has been divided into marked out parking bays, there is now only one space available for one car. We are sorry that this man was rude and discourteous. One slight niggle was that someone was parked in the allocated space when we arrived and we had difficulty getting parked as a result. It seems the allocated space is actually shared, and there is technically room, but it would be good to know in advance that we'd be sharing the space, and also the person parking there could park more considerately. One suggested improvement is black out blinds or curtains in the bedrooms that get very light with the existing blinds. Aside from these points it's a lovely place to stay, and for once in a holiday home the mattresses on the beds were really comfortable.

As stated in a previous review, the boiler is incredibly noisy and we had to turn the heating off at night or it would have kept us awake. This wasn't too much of an issue as it wasn't cold but I can imagine it would be a problem during a cold spell. The cottage is mostly well equipped, the decoration stylish and the beds comfortable. It is let down however by the strange layout of the kitchen. This is a very large room for a smallish cottage and could easily have accommodated a dishwasher and good-size fridge/freezer. Instead, there is a whole bank of empty ktichen units on the far side, with a tiny stand-alone freezer on the counter-top and a small fridge underneath, with no dishwasher. It would also have been nice to have a wifi connection.

Had to turn boiler off each night to get to sleep. Electronic thermostat bit cryptic. Downstairs shower squeals loudly, in use, the sound resonates through whole property, it likely requires a bubble trap/vent required for a thermostatic mixer shower in the hot feed. Dusty around radio speakers in living room. Front door rotting, flaking paint/putty. Sash windows tight to raise, suspect wet swollen timber. There were 12 cars in the car park every day, often double parked. Front of car park has slumped and will likely catastophically fall down hill following heavy rainfall.

The cottage had everything we needed but I think some attention to the window blinds is needed to make all the bedrooms darker to be able to sleep better, also attention needed to cleaning of certain areas of the cottage. Thank you for your recent feedback The roman blind in the twin bedroom does have blackout lining and I acknowledge on a bright morning that light can still leak through around the edges and also with the venetian blind. I am sorry that the cleaning wasn't to your satisfaction. Please advise the areas which required attention, and I will inform the housekeeping staff. The property

Mews Cottage is a charming period property located off Whitby’s prestigious St Hilda’s Terrace, near the lovely Pannett Park. The cottage benefits from its own private parking space for one car, a real boon in the centre of town.

It is finished to a very high standard, offering spacious accommodation for five people.

A ground floor bedroom and bathroom are a real advantage for visitors with mobility issues. Park your car immediately in front of the cottage and enter the hallway which leads to a light and welcoming sitting room with views over the town towards the harbour.

Relax on the comfortable sofas and, in a quieter moment, borrow a book from the small library.

There’s also a TV/DVD and WiFi for entertainment at the end of a busy day sightseeing.

A dining area completes the space. Double doors link the dining area to a large kitchen, fitted with stylish contemporary units.

The ground floor also has a pleasing single bedroom, decorated in sunny shades, plus a bathroom with a bath, shower over, basin and WC. Moving upstairs, a beautiful king-size double bedroom with en-suite shower room awaits.

The décor is so restful and organic: willow-patterned fabrics, a real wood floor and exposed beams, with a lovely easy chair and lamps for reading.

Wake up to views over to the harbour. Across the landing, there is a twin bedroom, tastefully decorated in lavender hues, also boasting long-reaching views towards the town and harbour.

Wooden flooring and an original (decorative) fireplace add old-world charm. To the outside is a small area with seating.

Pull up a chair, pour yourself a coffee and breathe in that lovely seaside air – instant rejuvenation! A short stroll and you are right in the heart of the thriving harbour, with bustling restaurants, cafes and bars which line the waterfront.

Rest a while and watch the world go by as pretty boats depart for the heritage coast and children drop their crabbing lines into the River Esk.

It’s a wonderful atmosphere. The Yorkshire coast is a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, quaint fishing villages, peaceful bays and miles of long sandy beaches.

Robin Hood’s Bay is a fossil hunter’s paradise and the village, with its maze of cobbled streets leading down to the beach, is picture-perfect.

Further south, Bempton Cliffs are home to nearly half a million seabirds, including puffins, making this stretch of coastline the UK’s largest mainland seabird colony. With so much to see and do, one visit may not be enough.

Mews Cottage is a homely and refined base from which to explore this stunning part of the UK.
