  • "This is a beautiful property with every convenience."

Unusually, there is no welcome pack, so don’t forget to bring the basics of milk and such with you. We had an unfortunate start to our holiday, with a cancelled train and then torrential rain as we arrived at the property. We were unable to get in for an hour as there were two keypads and we mistakenly tried the wrong one. We tried to contact Sykes for advice and they responded twenty four hours later. We were able to get through to another company who also let the house and they told us about the second box, which we had assumed to be a security light! It would be helpful if the faulty box was removed so that other visitors do not make the same mistake. It caused us a very stressful start to our break. Surely, If booking with Sykes, you should be able to contact someone in an emergency ?

We are sorry that you didn't have the best start to your holiday with the train issues and the Great British weather! Yorkshire Coastal Cottages are the local office that look after the property and are always happy to help. It does clearly state on the key collection details that you receive that it is the Top Key safe with the black cover that you need to use. We are sorry for any confusion. There is contact details for Sykes on your booking details, as well as an emergency out of hours number, or there is the local Yorkshire Coastal Cottages office located on Skinner Street, Whitby that is open 6 days a week. The be bathroom drains were a bit whiffy which wasn't great. The location is great for walking to town but parking is tricky. No outdoor space except for a tiny courtyard out the back so in hindsight it wasn't suitable for the dog. Lovely decor, clean and comfortable house.

Although we couldn't always park outside the property it was possible to park close by. Situated a short walk from the town, the uphills helped us to wear off some of the food and drink we found in the large number of pubs and restaurants.

Ideal location for Whitby town centre - only about 5 minutes walk into town As has been said by others, parking can be difficult - on arrival we had to park a couple of roads away but fell lucky when a couple of cars left shortly after and we were able to move our car. We enjoyed our stay and the property suited our requirements for the weekend

  • "We have had the most miserable holiday ever."

This was due to a restrictive clause imposed on our stay, which was only introduced to us after we had fully paid for the holiday. This was that under no circumstances at any time could our dog be left alone in the house. Why was this never made clear in the initial details? We have stayed at many cottages in Whitby before and are used to ‘dog rules’ which are always made clear from the start. We have no problem with these and happily adhere to them. But this restriction, imposed at the last minute, meant that we could not go into town together, go for long walks during the day together, go out in the evening together…all the things we love to do in Whitby. Our dog is a 12 year old Cavalier with a heart condition, he doesn’t do distance or crowds! The only thing we could do as a family all week was to walk him round the block. We are therefore looking for substantial compensation for a ruined holiday. I have spoken with Sykes today who have told me they will set up a case and get back to me. You cannot impose such restrictive conditions at that stage of an agreement. In fact it is illegal to do so, and this is a route we shall take if necessary.

Under the Booking Terms and conditions that is freely available to view on the Sykes website, section 9.5 clearly states 'Pet rules: You must not allow pets on beds or on furniture within the Property. Pets must not be left alone in the Property (which include the garden and any outside areas) at any time.' Yorkshire Coastal Cottages/ Sykes on behalf of the property owners Property Owner

  • "Stayed here as 3 mature elderly couples for 3 nights and had an amazing stay."

The property is in a good location, a 5 minute walk down to the train station and has ample free parking outside the house or on nearby streets. The house itself is very tastefully decorated, with good quality fixtures and fittings and ample seating for 6 people in the lounge and dining room. There is an unbelievable amount of crockery and cutlery and everything else you could possibly need. There are three good sized bedrooms, all with comfortable beds and two bathrooms. We had an issue on arrival about cleaners having not been in but this was very quickly resolved with the agents and the house was left spotlessly clean. We would definitely use again and can highly recommend. Ps not really suitable for anyone with mobility problems as there are lots of steps.

Personal preference I know. There was only one tea towel at the property so we had to purchase more. The oven hob is defective and needs attention. There was black mould in the shower cubicle.

Thank you for your feedback. There should have been 2 tea towels left so going forwards we will ensure this is the case. The hob is an induction hob for safety reasons. It requires the correct pans which provided. There are also instructions on how to operate the hob in the appliance folder in the kitchen. That being said we will check to make sure everything is working as it should be. We apologise, and we will have the shower resealed at the earliest opportunity. • "The downstairs of the property needed a good clean."

When we arrived the kitchen floor was covered in large spots of fat, when I cleaned this, the cloth I used was filthy suggesting the floor hadn’t been washed at all. Fat was dripping out of the extractor fan suggesting the filter needed changing. Downstairs definitely needed all the furniture moving and the place ‘bottoming’. The advertised outside space, although small was filthy and totally unfit for use. In no way did it resemble the picture in the advertisement. The dishwasher didn’t work and we had to put salt and rinse aid in it. The en-suite shower upstairs smelt very musty and the fan very dusty ( thus was mentioned in a previous review) This spoilt our enjoyment of what was a pleasant room. The house looks beautiful on the pictures but unfortunately the cleanliness issues would stop us using or recommending it again.

  • "The property was very nicely decorated, warm ,comfortable and welcoming."

There was a good selection of pots and crockery as well as games and movies. It was obvious that great care and attention had been taken to make visitors enjoy their stay. The property was in a good location and only a short walk to Whitby town centre. Building renovation work is ongoing on the street although generally it is a quiet location. On street parking was difficult on some occasions. It was unfortunate that some areas of cleanliness within the property were not up to the expected standard . For example the oven was not clean although foil had been placed in the grill pan. There were three oven trays which were all unfit to use, however these were quickly replaced by the local sales and support team. The bathroom shower safety mats were unfit to use and these were not replaced during our 7 day vacation. The upper shower room is very compact. The shower itself was really nice, however as a shower water is expected to splash on the base during use but the tray was very slippy. Without a safety mat or bath floor mat to step onto when getting out of the shower the floor was also slippy. There was not much room to move about when getting out of the shower or using the sink. Small issues such as dust under furniture and in air extractor vents were noticed. We were asked to remove bedding on leaving which we did. The top bedding as lovely. However two of the actual quits were stained and four of the pillow protectors were very badly stained and not , in our view, suitable for multiple visitors. While these were small points which did not spoil our stay , once again in our view, they let the property down.

Hello there, Glad to hear you enjoyed your time in Whitby. However, very sorry to hear you had some issues in the house. We will ensure that these are reviewed and renewals to equipment will be made accordingly. Regarding cleanliness this will be mentioned at review with the cleaning team. Blackout blinds a must in midsummer, and the fans in the rooms were appreciated. We did sleep with windows shut so as to not hear the gulls quite so loud! I think there must have been soundproofing as once the windows were closed we couldn’t hear much at all. Lovely view to the Abbey from the top floor. The house is 3 storey the stairs could be a problem for some . We had a very comfortable stay and would recommend See Glympse the house on the whole was clean but under sofas and furniture in the living room and on top of wardrobes were dusty which stopped it getting full marks for cleanliness. I’m not sure who this point refers to wether it’s the owners , the management company or Sykes Cottages but the long list of to do’s before you leave I found a little annoying . I would always always leave a house tidy on leaving but to be told to strip all the beds and put everything in bags is a bit cheeky we paid a lot of money to stay there a service is being provided I’m on holiday to get away from all that I have never been asked that before .
