Only one criticism for the 2 bathrooms, the on suite bathroom heated towel rail was only partly working (presume air at the top) and for the other bathroom the heated towel rail wasn't working at all. This made drying towels difficult. Couldn't find any switch to operate it either internally or in the corridor outside. Would have been nice to have a comments book in the flat as I know one of the others has. It is a little pricey but overall brilliant and will hope to be back next year

  • "The only comment was that the hot water was set at too high a temperature."

Great danger of inadvertently scalding. Other than that we enjoyed our time in the apartment.

Thank you for sharing your concerns, we certainly don’t want any of our guests scolded on our hot water. The temperature settings on the hot water system are restricted to set levels and so they are not the most flexible in the world, however this was one of the reasons why we installed mixer taps throughout the apartment – in the kitchen, the en-suite and in the bathroom as they can reduce the risk of scolding and allow you to vary the temperature fairly easily. Some people may not be so familiar with them of course, in which case you would expect them to handle them with a bit of caution. Both showers have thermostatic valves. We will monitor this and will get our handyman to check the settings the next time he is onsite. Property Owner

Cannot recommend enough. Cleanliness always first class, convenient easy parking, apartment spacious and easy walk into Whitby. Added bonus this time of new mattresses but just wish the sheets were fitted and stayed in place. • "We stay at The Engine Shed at least once a year and have recommended it."

We usually book the Flying Scotsman but have stayed in Nigel Gresley before. Everything is fine except the mattresses and the en-suite. The mattress in the main room has gone on the edge and groans when you get in, but the mattress in the second bedroom has a big hollow in the middle. The floor tiles on the en-suite are missing most of their grout so it looks tired. Will not book this apartment again.

Hi Beverley, Thank you for the feedback. It was unfortunate that the replacement mattresses could not be delivered prior to your stay with us. They arrived and were fitted on 15th December so the beds will be back to their best again. We agree the grouting has been looking tired and we had not been able to address this during the season as this apartment is very popular. We have therefore closed not just Sir Nigel Gresley but our other apartments too for a period in January to re-grout the bathroom floors and make them as good as new again. We very much look forward to you staying again Property Owner

Hi Sharon, We are glad you found it a great place to stay. With regards to the heated towel rail, this one has two switches so it is possible one of them was not switched on, we've had it working since your stay. I do hope you will stay with us again and if you have any problems such an issue as the towel rail not heating up, contact Mari (her details are provided in the apartment) and Mari will arrange for our handyman to attend and fix it during your stay. • "Generally satisfied, the property is wonderful but it is let down with standards off cleanliness (black hair all over the en-suite bathroom floor and on the kitchen floor) and the bedding does not fit properly."

There was a fusty smell in the master bedroom - not over powering by any means, but it was there. In trying to remedy the hair situation, we found the Hoover was blocked mainly with hair oddly enough and lots of dust/detritus and suction was therefore non-existent. The location of the accommodation is just perfect and could not have been better. The facilities were adequate aside from the issues highlighted and the acid test as always is would we return? Well, yes we would, we had a wonderful, relaxing week in a quiet, well maintained property which has an added bonus of private under cover parking too.

Hi Dominic, I can only apologise for the black hair you found, that is not what you want to see. I have raised it with our housekeepers and I hope it will not happen again. I would love you to stay with us again and if you ever find anything like that or the hoover being full, please contact Mari and she will ensure it gets attended to. (we've replaced the hoover by the way, they do get an awful lot of use). Kind regards Peter Property Owner

Secure parking also excellent. Comfort: Very generous sized beds, but mattress rather firm for us, which affected sleep. The sofas were really comfortable, apart from being Chesterfield design, with no head support. Any questions were immediately answered (by text/ phone) by the housekeeping manager. Just park up and it's less than a 10 minute walk to the quayside (and the well stocked Co-op supermarket). First time in Sir Nigel Gresley as our 3 previous visits were in Repton. Spotlessly clean and a lovely welcome bag and flowers on our arrival. Everything you could ask for in the kitchen including dishwasher and washing machine together with the rest of the very good quality appliances. All this with the added bonus of secure undercover parking makes the Engine Shed the best place to stay in Whitby. Don’t worry about the timings of the trains they don’t come to early or to late. The accommodation is beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and a little welcome pack to get you started. The location is great for walking into Whitby, 5 minutes and you are in the centre of it all. Seeing the steam trains right outside our lounge window was an added bonus. Definitely would stay here again or one of the other rooms. The communication from Sykes I rate poor, I tried to return their call to update on my daughters doctors appointment, even email asking for an acknowledgment to which I never received. Upon arrival I call the house keeper of the accommodation and she was unaware that we were still coming as yet again Sykes had not contacted her with an update to if we were still going from the outcome of our daughters doctors appointment. This was booked through hotels.com and for some reason Sykes got involved. Also I was given two different check in and check out times, turns out we could have checked in 2 hours earlier. Very cold inside but that is the nature of the building, did need heating on every night.Very good welcome pack.Mattress rather firm and sheets ride off the bed easily, pillows far too thick and overstuffed for comfort but we are all different, others might like them. Indoor parking not made clear in original booking description and would have been problem if we all had tall vehciles, plus roof creaks when vehicles moving above you a little alarming.Fire evacuation details a worry if you are trapped in apartment as only one exit, only option to open doors for fresh air. Great faciltiy however and couldn't be more conveniently positioned in town centre and view of abbey and harbour from window. The Police need to address the local boy racers with noisey car exhausts who meet in carpark opposite the station, I don't object to them gathering but the constant in and out and around town and back and revving engines is like being trapped in a jam jar with an annoying fly, the sound reverberates around the harbour and town being at the botttom of the hills and the locals must be fed up with it as it goes on past midnight every night, these exhaust are illegal and just sorting them out would solve problem.

The whole experience was fabulous. After initially being told we might have to wait up to 5pm to gain access (due to covid cleaning measures) we were called by a lovely lady at 1.30pm to say everything was ready for us. The apartments have covered and secure parking and access to the apartment is gained through a security coded door directly from the carpark. Once inside the apartment we were delighted with what we found, 2 spacious double sized bedrooms (one ensuite and the other with a bathroom directly opposite). An open plan living area that had a sparkling clean fully equipped kitchen, dinning table and a very comfy and spacious L shaped sofa. Initially we were a little concerned about the fact the train line runs within inches of the windows but the stylish double glazed doors mean that the rumbling of the infrequent trains is actually a welcome noise and you were almost disappointed that they didn't run more often! Overall I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this apartment as a place to stay if you are visiting the area and it would be suitable for a family of four to have a break or 2 couples

The apartment was extremely well equipped, lovely welcome pack and everything you could think of for cooking. The noise from the train was minimal, my 9 month old baby slept through it all. High quality travel cot (with extra mattress) and high chair available although they were not left in our apartment and we had to go and find them.
