  • "Overall a lovely property, plenty of space for the five of us and clean."

Only downside seating in the lounge was a little tight. We’d originally booked for 4 adults and 2 children and we would have struggled to all fit on the sofa’s. There’s a little wear and tear to the property but nothing that bothered us and wouldn’t most people. We made use of the DVDs provided and watched a few films. Two small issues; one of the main bulbs in a bedroom had gone and tripped a fuse but we couldn’t find the fuse box. However plenty of lamps in there and the number left to message for any issues was lovely and helpful and offered a quick solution. Heating had obviously been off for a while and the attic bedroom radiator was fully turned on. This meant the house was uncomfortably cold on the first night. Much better by the second day and we bought some extra blankets, as why wouldn’t you on a stormy weekend in Whitby. Beds were really comfy. Plenty of space to pop away clothes in all the rooms. No issue with any of the bed linen or towels provided. Kitchen had plenty of cutlery and crockery with enough pans to get us through the weekend. Bathroom was clean and spacious. Shame we couldn’t use the outside area for our morning coffee due to the weather but would have been fab in summer. Parking outside the property was limited as stated on the listing. We ended up parking at the bottom of the hill behind the train station. Only a short walk up the hill to the house or back into the town centre during the day. Not an issue at all for us and wasn’t a negative to the stay. We would book again

  • "The cottage is in an ideal location from Whitby, being a short walk away - although up quite a steep hill."

The upstairs of the cottage is beautiful and the beds are super comfortable. The fans were useful in the hot weather. The inside of the cottage is pretty and has a beach theme. The downstairs is let down by the level of cleanliness. The cushions and throw were not clean and needed washing. The cushions were quite stained and smelly. I put them in the washer - but felt this should not have been necessary. The large rug was very smelly and needs replacing as there was a strong doggy smell. The kitchen had everything we needed although the cabinet doors were sticky and the pans were old and needed replacing. The microwave was faulty on arrival and we used the hob instead and let the owners know before departure. The furniture outside was comfortable but covered in bird poo that had obviously been built up over a long period. I wiped it down on our first evening and gave it a quick wipe when needed. But again, it needs cleaning at each change over and this clearly isn’t happening which is a shame. We brought our dog and left her in the kitchen when we went out, we opened the under stairs cupboard door and put a chair against it, but a stair gate for this purpose would be useful and would keep the lounge cleaner. Our dog is very much part of the family but the downstairs did have a real doggy smell to it and even in dog friendly cottages this should not be the case. The chippy was lovely but the pub across the road has closed. We had a lovely week and none of this spoiled our holiday but the overall cleanliness downstairs and outside unfortunately let the cottage down which was a real shame.

  • "Smoked Kipper Cottage is convenient to walk into Whitby."

However the lights in the bathroom did not work for the whole of our stay. An electrician tried to repair the lights but the repair did not last. We were told we could shower and go to the toilet with the door open, as the landing light was bright, (6 people and a baby staying from different families) this was not ideal. We were promised that torches would be dropped off by ‘Maid in Whitby’, this did not happen. Poor communication from the owner, when promised a call back ASAP, this did not happen; no call back.

  • "Smoked Kipper Cottage is set quite high above the town so you need to be pretty fit for walking from town."

Parking outside the cottage was easy but our visit was out of season. The area was quiet and I suspect this might not change in summer as it’s off the tourist trail. The highlight of the area is there is the most amazing Fish and Chip shop a few doors down , huge portion and amazing quality, a good few pounds cheaper than those around the harbour. The cottage has a lovely modern bathroom with a hot and powerful shower and the beds were comfortable. Unfortunately the cottage was very cold when we arrived and the open plan downstairs was difficult to keep warm but that would not be a problem for summer visitors. The town of Whitby needs no advocacy ,it’s a marvellous little gem huddled tight on the Yorkshire coast.

The only draw back is the steep hill you need to walk up from the centre of Whitby. Having said that we would definitely stay at Smoked kipper cottage again.

It’s a great location and has all the things you need to be a home away from home. There were a few minor issues whilst we were there but the owner and maids of whitby team were great and quickly got things fixed. We enjoyed it so much we have already booked to go back next year. Parking was no issue, we managed to park around the curves initially and then moved to outside the house on our second day.

    Noisy busy location

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback. Whitby is a very busy resort, but especially so at Easter weekend/ school holidays when you stayed. The house is centrally located which is why parking is advertised as being road side parking and on a first come - first served basis. On street parking cannot be guranteed, but the area where the house is located is one of the best central areas of Whitby to park for free. Cleanliness is a priority for us and the house is managed and cleaned by a local friendly Whitby company and I have passed on your comments. Their contact details were in the property and they would have been happy to rectify any issues had they have been contacted during your stay. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay at the Smoked Kipper Cottage."

Booking was easy with all the information needed to access the property. We were fortunate as no we were able to park on the road outside with no problems. Inside the cottage was well equipped and spacious for 5 adults and two dogs. The beds were comfortable and the shower was lovely. The stairs were steep to the top bedroom but we knew about it in the information and wasn’t a problem for us, the only thing I’d say is for my older Mum she would have benefitted from a handrail going up the stairs which we didn’t check on but should have done due to her mobility on stairs. This is in no way a reflection on the property and more something to be aware of. Sadly we were only staying for a short stay but could have easily stayed for longer.

It has everything you need. The chippy a few doors down is fab and the pub on the corner is very welcoming. There are some great dog walks nearby and its only a short stroll into town and less than a fiver for a cab back if necessary. The nearby butchers is really good, had to get some of his sausages to bring home.

The description was accurate, which is important because the stairs to the top bedroom are quite steep, although we had no problem. The baby equipment was provided as we requested and everything else we required was available. We had a wonderful holiday in Whitby. Thank you.

  • "Firstly, speak to Sykes."

Info sent to us had the wrong address on it - 9 Ashburn Lane. Not helpful. Comfortable and spacious enough. However running a bath etc took forever due to the low pressure. Could have done with a pointer about the etiquette of hanging out washing. Wasn't sure if it was just first come, first served.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback, you were our first guests so we are learning all the time. We have been in touch with Sykes about them giving out the wrong address. They have done it again but it has now been finally amended. We have complained about this as it is not the service we expected from them and it isnt good for you when you have travelled there. As mentioned in the welcome pack we are having a new bath and shower fitted very soon. The line etiquette is something we have taken on board and thanks for raising it, it is somethig we should have put in the welcome pack and you were right it was first come first served outside the back gate. Glad you found it spacious and comfortable. Lisa & Steve Property Owner
