  • "We had a lovely stay, the house is bright and well appointed."

There are one or two things which let it down. The kitchen has an [in my opinion] overlarge cooker and so many gadgets and pieces of equipment that there is no room for food other than the fridge. The under TV cupboard was inconvenient and inappropriate for such use as labelled. We left the house cleaner than we found it. Kitchen and bathrooms were spotless, but under the sofas we found sweets and other foodstuffs, toys and fluff. Under the beds, we found an empty coke can and toys. The promised parking disc cards were not there. A phone call to the owner brought a promise of 'the cleaner will drop it off'. That never happened and so parking the second car caused quite an expense and usually a long walk after a busy day. The bottle of prosecco was a nice touch on arrival.

  • "Lovely comfortable and attractively decorated house."

Perfectly situated really close to beach and amenities and with a partial sea view from the attic bedroom window. We really appreciated the prosecco on arrival, thank you! The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and the towels were lovely and thick. Despite being an all adult party we were delighted to find comprehensive beach supplies including buckets and spades and crabbing buckets in the shed! A couple of minor things that could have made our stay even more perfect would have been a few cleaning supplies, such as a multi surface spray and some loo cleaner. If there was a hoover we never found it. Some instructions for the attic blind would have been helpful and the main grill wasn't working in the oven. None of that was enough to detract from an excellent stay in a beautiful house though.

  • "Beautiful house as described."

Garden much smaller than seen in photo - overgrown and garden sofa filthy - requires a cover. Kitchen well stocked - however cooker hadn't been cleaned for weeks - inground cooking and smoked +++. Generally clean but very dusty behind furniture and stair carpet spotted with spills. Under cushions on sofa there were crumbs and general dust. These issues spoiled the house which was lovely. Carla

  • "West Cliff House had everything we were looking for."

The bedrooms were clean, bright and the beds were comfy. The bathrooms likewise were clean and the showers were powerful! The kitchen had pretty much everything you needed, although we didn’t find the food cupboard storage under the TV in the room until Day 2, with our initial comments ‘needed more cupboard space!’ The oven and microwave worked well and plenty of room in the fridge - Freezer. All utensils, pots and pans were provided, and plenty of condiments were available. The parking was fine to the rear and plenty of parking passes provided for the week. The living room was fine however the front window didn’t feel secure which I informed the owner about. There was quite a draft and the window pushed away from the frame on locking. Our only ‘issue’ was we didn’t realise the apartment was actually in the basement, and on the first night we had 2 excited heavy footed boys and received a message politely asking us to keep the noise down. Absolutely no issue with the request however it then meant daily we were speaking to the kids to tread quietly and keep the noise down. It’s a note for ourselves for future bookings, we wouldn’t want to put ourselves and others in that position again. In all the place was lovely, great location, just made us realise we need a solid floor beneath us next time!

Thanks for your feedback, the window is a year old and we have now had company come back to fix repair. Thanks for notifying us. We do not usually get much noise from basement apartment when we stay there ourselves, but my apologies that happened during your stay. Thanks so much and we hope to see you again soon. Beds and settees very comfortable. Pleased with amount and variety of kitchen equipment. Great location and parking permits most welcome. Owner needs to know: Heat settings need attention - the preset timings (which property instructions say must not be changed) means the hottest times and untouchable radiators (21C) are between midnight and 5am

Hi, I am pleased that you have enjoyed your stay at West Cliff House. The NEST heating system was unfortunately altered by previous guest, so thank you for notifying us of this as its now been returned to normal settings. I hope to see you back in Whitby soon. Sarah Property Owner

  • "The location of the cottage was great and certain aspects were very good lovely bed linen and comfortable beds also the decor was great, but unfortunately was let down by the cleaning."

On the first day we found a empty 2 litre bottle of Pepsi under the radiator in the lounge. The extractor fan in the en-suite was very dusty and the front room window on the outside had not been cleaned in a long time generaly the house needs a good clean. We also had a issue with parking as there was always a car blocking the space. Sorry to sound so negative but if these issues were addressed great house and would book again.

Thank you for your feed back, I will be monitoring the level of cleaning and will arrange for signage at the rear of the property regarding parking to prevent others parking there. We hope to see you back soon. Sarah Property Owner

  • "Well appointed location, comfortable and enough room and equipment for 5 people."

Cleanliness okay overall but specific issues with blockage of drain in shower - full of other people’s hair - and cleanliness under furniture and cushions - noticeable as had a toddler in the party. Rubbish disposal a problematic area as only one dustbin for recycling and one for general rubbish to cater for house and apartment. General rubbish bin full from start of holiday and although told to leave rubbish in house and cleaner would sort its disposal at end of our week this was totally inappropriate. Recycling bin had to be searched for under a pile of bins. Two general rubbish bins are definitely needed.

I apologise about the rubbish disposal as the council did not pick up that week. We have 2 bins and a recycling bin at the rear of the property, labelled with No 11 on them. I will pass on your comments to the cleaners. I do hope that you visit Whitby again soon. Property Owner

We all slept well in the comfortable beds, house stayed relatively cool during the crazy 40 degree heatwave! Brilliant position next to sea front and a short walk to lovely places for brunch. Our only criticisms are that the parking space was often occupied or blocked, and the garden furniture needs to be cleaned as very soiled with bird 'detritus' when we arrived !

  • "In the details there was no mention of the steepness of the stairs and a hand rail should have been fitted In the kitchen there was nowhere to store food except in a cupboard marked for food which had no shelves."

The dish washer was far too small and the saucepans and dishes were inadequate for four people let alone seven The heating was complicated and even after we phoned the owner we could only get one radiator and a towel rail to work The fittings and fixtures were very nice and of a high quality but the house was most disappointing

Thank you for your feedback. We will alter the information about the property to state its over 3 floors and the attic master bedroom is accessed via slightly steeper than average staircase without a hand rail. The extra food cupboard is left without a shelf so that larger items can be stored in there. Unfortunately due to space restrictions a 3/4 size dishwasher can only able to be fitted. We have increased number pf pots and pans. The heating is a NEST system that can be controlled by a dial on each floor of the property or remotely by myself. Always happy to help if you call me . Helpful owner who was very responsive when I had a few questions. We had a brilliant family holiday overall and would go back if we ever decided to go to Whitby again! Only improvements I would suggest is making where to park more obvious and cleaning underneath furniture (only noticed because we had a little one who spent a lot of time on the floor and dropping toys underneath sofas etc).

We travelled with our 8 month old son so we had to spend more time than we would usually in the accommodation. This wasn't a problem as the surroundings made us feel like we were still somewhere special rather than just a practical flat.

  • "Fantastic property."

Very modern and warm, very tastefully decorated and perfect location. Allocated parking though is not allocated parking, it’s an area at the back of the property that may or may not be occupied by another vehicle, even day trippers who strike lucky? In our case the occupants of the apartment below, a note was left on the car by the cleaner to park elsewhere using a provided parking permit, but they just removed the note and left their car there for the week. We managed to find a spot near the property and used parking permit provided. Perhaps a sign indicating it’s the designated spot for the house and not the apartment below, we booked this property specifically for the allocated parking as there were plenty of other properties without allocated parking. Very disappointed with this aspect. Perhaps a DVD player would be nice with a house of this standard and some glasses for cold drinks, wine etc.

  • "We had a great time and thought the standard of decor and cleanliness of the house was very impressive."

We loved it! Only 2 constructive criticisms... 1. The mattress in the attic room is very hard and uncomfortable. We got little sleep because of it. Worth investing in a better quality mattress. 2. The website advertises a parking space at the back of the house. On arrival a red car was parked there. I called the caretaker number and was advised to come back later as it may have been the cleaners car. I was also advised that there would be parking scratch cards in the house. We paid to park on the seafront and when we checked again later and the red car was still there along with a white car alongside it. The white car was blocking in the neighbour. The neighbour then came banging on the house front door complaining that we had blocked them in. It transpired that the white car belonged to the guests of the apartment and they were nowhere to be found. When we came home later that night the red car was gone and the white car (of the apartment guests) was parked in our allotted space. It was there all weekend so we had to pay for parking on the front for both of our cars all weekend as at no point was there one space on the street or streets nearby in order for us to use the scratch cards. It would make sense to not advertise parking with the house as this was all a bit stressful. If it was advertised with no parking we would have just paid to park elsewhere and not worried about it.

  • "Gorgeous properly and brilliant location."

Only issue was that the parking space reserved guests staying in the house (to the rear of the property) was being used by the guests staying at the flat below the house when we arrived, which meant that we had to park both of our vehicles on the road in front of the house. The main road gets busy and unless you’re very lucky you end up parking a bit further from the property. One member of my family has mobility issues and relied on having close access to the house (which I explained when we arrived) and I feel the situation could have been dealt with better by the owner as several days passed before her other guests moved their car, but other than that no complaints.

A bottle of prosecco and some delicious biscuits were left for us as a welcome gift, plus a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The decor and furnishings are fabulous and the heating system is very efficient, keeping us toasty whilst the gales and hale stones were whipping up outside! Our only disappointment was that we couldn't stay longer and we will definitely be returning. Thank you so much!
