I found socks in a bedside drawer and a piece of clothing in another drawer. Also a blister pack of pills lying on the floor. The hair dryer nozzle was covered in hairs and sticky residue. Bed headboard and other wooden fittings had thick layer of dust on them. Really not good enough! The towels were very small and only one each. Not really enough for a week. Plus nowhere to dry them!

  • "We love staying in this apartment."

It is bright, welcoming and clean. We have stayed many times because it is cosy, central and has great views. It is very well maintained by the owner and has everything you would need for a holiday. They should be proud. One small criticism would be a bigger/comfy sofa. Maybe we’re getting older but we really felt it this year. The main issue is, with whoever is tasked to clean it. They let down the property by not being thorough, during change over. Guests are asked to wash and tidy everything away before leaving. However, as was with the past couple of years the dishes, glasses and pans in the cupboards are not checked for cleanliness. The glasses were greasy, on some of the plates, there was dried on food and also burnt on food in some pans. We therefore, had to wash them all before use. The extractor fan was also covered in grease and as much as we wanted to clean it; we didn’t want to risk standing on the furniture. The area between the cooker and work top was filled with crumbs and seeds and had not been brushed or cleaned out. We also found a dirty bath towel in the bathroom. This is unacceptable, as in the past we’ve found dirty clothes left from previous occupiers in the bathroom. As we stated previously, we love this apartment and hope these issues are addressed, so we can continue to return.

The owner has responded as follows; We are so sorry that you had any disappointment during your return stay. We are more than happy to be contacted if any guest has any concerns and Sykes also have a dedicated helpline for a guest who needs help and the cleaning company does leave a card at the property. If we had known of any issue at the time, we would have sorted it immediately for you and had areas checked/recleaned straight away. We escalated this to the cleaning company and all areas you have mentioned are being double checked for extra cleaning immediately where required and the cleaning company will be proactively monitoring the standards to ensure this doesn't happen again, so we can assure you that the property is back to its usual high standards moving forward and we do hope you continue to visit. Incredibly well equipped, I didn’t expect to find an iron or hairdryer. The owner was quick to reply to messages and always with a polite and friendly reply. I’d suggest adding a fan to the flat as it was incredibly hot while we were there. I think thicker curtains or curtain liners in the bedroom would also be helpful to block out some of the light. We really struggled with the road noise. I know the owner can do nothing about this but I think the Sykes description of “some road noise” needs to be reworded to make it clear this is on a main road, near a pub.

) The "what a view quayside apartment" in Whitby was perfect, it has everything you need for a relaxing stay in Whitby. It's in the perfect location to enjoy the sights and sounds of Whitby, we loved the mornings waking up to the sounds and sights of Whitby: fishing boats getting ready, tourist boats setting up, the swing bridge opening / closing etc. The breakfast / dinner table is perfectly placed to sit back and watch the world go by, we didn't drive anywhere as everything you need is in Whitby: shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs, bars, the abbey, museums etc. If you do wish to venture outside of Whitby there are plenty of buses and trains within walking distance at the bus/train station just the other side of the swing bridge, the coastal hopper buses can take you exploring around the other coastal towns and villages. (Staithes, Robin hood's bay, Scarborough, etc..) We will be back again in the near future and we recommend this apartment for anyone wishing to stay in Whitby 100%.

The site is excellent, far away from the town to be quite at night but near enough to enjoy it. We fell lucky with the parking in the car park across the road somebody was pulling out as we arrived, we brought a 4 day ticket from the information centre on the second day so we weren't running back and forth topping up the machine. We would highly recommend the property and would be booking it again on future visits to Whitby.

  • "Great views across the harbour and central for all attractions in Whitby."

The bedroom is very comfortable and the apartment has most of the amenities required for your stay. Parking is the main issue, as is widely recognised, so a bit of planning ahead would help. If you can download the RingGo App from Google Play or equivalent (NOT a third party download site that will charge a monthly fee!) you can pay for your parking on Church Street Car Park using your mobile. The single glazed sash windows (I assume this is a conservation area) don't keep much noise out so if you are a light sleeper, I would recommend taking some earplugs. There is plenty to see and do in Whitby so you would never be bored and this apartment does the job just fine.

Really helpful tips from landlord Mark on where to go to eat etc, plus local amenities. Shame we happened to be staying at the same time as the Regatta and Folk Week - as Whitby was rammed. However, highly recommend The White Horse & Griffin, Trenchers and Duke of York for drinks and dining. Apartment is on the main road passed the marina & can get a bit noisy to the wee small hours. The Fleece pub across the road generates late night noise but mainly because the windows are single glazed; probably would not have heard anything if double glazed. As the name of the apartment suggests there is a splendid view of the harbour. The apartment is well equipped and comfortable for two people. It is near all the main attractions of Whitby. The wifi is fast. The network name and password for the wifi is on the router, which you will obviously need to input to your device. The router is in the bedroom on a shelf opposite the bed- we did not notice it at first. The tv gives a very good picture quality. The biggest negative is the parking. There is a public car park across the road, but it is nearly always full. On a couple of occasions we had to part in the large car park across the river, a 10 to 15 minute walk. Parking costs £9 for 24 hours, although you can by a ticket for your whole stay, at £8 a day from the Tourist Office across the harbour, which saves having to use the payment machine every time you park. It covers all the Scarborough Borough car parks. There is limited provision for clothes (chest and hangers).

That said, the bed was extremely comfortable, the kitcen was well equipped and the bath / shower very good. It was ‘dressed’ for Christmas, which was tastefully done without being overboard. The apartment was bright and clean and as always very well equipped. A great addition was WiFi and a TV in the bedroom. The only issue were the grubby cups & glasses and a used wet bath towel we found hung on the back of the bathroom door. Things that shouldn’t really have been missed by the cleaners and let the owner’s property down. Getting in through the building entrance door was tricky as the key was old and the bolt was a poor fit in the lock, however we managed it. Unfortunately, the following evening upon leaving the building and locking the door as required, our key broke in the lock, effectively locking us (and anyone else who had already left) out of the building. We immediately contacted Sykes Cottages and explained our predicament. I have nothing but praise about how we were treated. Staff were empathetic and efficient in trying to resolve the problem; contacting the owner and even looking into booking us a hotel for the night. They kept in contact, checking in on our well-being and progress. With such excellent customer service, we will continue to use Sykes. In the end after managing to gain entry, we took the lock off the door; a locksmith arrived the next morning, refit the old lock and provided us with his spare key for the building and we continued with our holiday.

or not hot water, was a problem on our last Sykes cottage. The bath side handle is getting loose and needs tightening. One downside was that the kitchen really needs a good clean. Some of the pots and pans had remnents of a previous guest's breakfast or dinner, and I bet they are still there. I know the guests should clean the pans they use, but obviously some do not and you need to check. We could have cleaned them, but hey we don't pay to go on holiday and clean other people's pans. Apart from that, good.
