Wonderful design, and Isla and John took so much trouble and really went out of their way to help make my stay enjoyable. Perhaps worth mentioning that this holiday was particularly good for someone without a car, as rail and bus worked well, as long as you study timetables carefully. The Coop is a bit of a walk, but the local garage at the top of the road had almost everything I needed. Walking was excellent, including a Munro within walking distance of the signalbox.

We loved the area and village. The cottage itself was ideal for a couple and in a way home from home! We did a fair amount of travelling around, as far north as Alness and my husband attempted to climb the nearest munro. No stranger to travelling by train, we loved the fast ones and the few which stopped at Newtonmore. All in all we had a great time.

This place is pretty authentic so that anyone looking from the station might think it is a real signal box! More than that, it feels as though it's cared for - this might be because Isla and her husband stay themselves occasionally - something I'd recommend to every owner - so there's nothing "missing"! Incredibly clean, well presented, quirky and equipped for everything! On arrival was a (slightly addictive...) chocolate cake, milk and everything there to get the wood burner going... and the view!!!! My god, the view.... We watched the sun creep over the mountains every day in awe of the scenery. In recommendation we tried the Glen Hotel for food which was okay, but after reading the reviews we expected better food/service and were a bit disappointed. The Braeriach Hotel on the high street on the other hand was a riot!! If you want to be welcomed into the community with open arms and enjoy great company and a few drinks whilst listening to the regulars blast out Sinatra on the karaoke (Friday night) this is the place for you! One of the best nights out for a long time ending in hugs and "come back to see us again." Truly felt welcomed and left with a warm fuzzy glow.... (could also account that to the whisky....) If you want to laugh continuously for a few hours, pay them a visit. The Scottish highlands has so much to see and do and the Signal Box is central to it all. Our first visit and I doubt it will be our last. Thank you Isla for a wonderful stay.

It was so peaceful a stay, there are plenty of books to read on all sorts of subjects if you get bored at all, I only managed one but fancied reading a lot more! There is a train that passes every now and then but it didn't disturb us, we just got very into watching for the different trains. Its in a great location also, close to many different walks and nearby towns and places of interest, we also really appreciated the sauna after some Munro climbing! It is also pretty close, about 10-15 minute walk away from a few shops, restaurants and pubs of which I found a few were vegan friendly luckily as I was thinking I would be cooking all own food which there definitely is the facilities to do this.We really hope to visit again in the future!

  • "The Signal Box is in a beautiful location and is very stylish and well equipped."

The sauna is a luxurious addition and very relaxing after a long day walking across the hills. We had a lovely chocolate cake, flowers and pint of milk awaiting our arrival which was delightful. Isla, the owner, called round on Tuesday to make sure everything was OK, which was very helpful. There are two things we would like to mention: First, the mattress was very, very firm. It would appear that the mattress, being sprung, is not suitable for a slatted wooden base and should normally be on a divan base, making it more comfortable. The duvet was only just wide enough and felt meagre. A king size duvet on a double mattress is always cosier! Secondly, there was no DVD player despite it being mentioned in the details. It didn't matter that much but perhaps should be removed from the description.

Thank you for your feedback, we are happy to hear you had a nice stay and enjoyed the welcome gift. We are sorry to hear you were unhappy with the duvet cover, this has now been changed to a king-size duvet. In relation to the mattress this is down to personal opinion however, we will monitor the feedback on the mattress. The property now has a smart TV so the DVD player has been removed, the description has now been updated. Thanks again and we hope to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

The property

Something a bit special!

This quirky detached wooden property, built in 2004 in the form of a signal box, is adjacent to the station in the Badenoch & Strathspey village of Newtonmore and was featured in The Times' list of '50 best cottages, beach houses and rural retreats' in January 2013.

To make the most of the panoramic views towards the River Spey and Cairngorm Mountains, the accommodation is upside down, with a spacious, open plan living area on the first floor, while on the ground floor are a double bedroom and bathroom with sauna.

Decorated to a high standard, this charming property is in an ideal location to explore the village and take advantage of the walking in the area.

The cottage is 150 metres from a link into the Wildcat Trail - a 7km orbital walk and path network.

The other attractions of the Cairngorms National Park are also within easy reach - an excellent base at any time of year!
