  • "Excellent in all aspects and we are likely to come back again"

  • "It would be nice to have a sofa and not just garden chairs everywhere, the lounge ones weren't particularly comfortable."

Some kitchen units need attention regarding soft close features. Shower has no great power delivery of water. Outside light switches need to be identified.

  • "A lovely detached cottage, plenty of space for two."

Off road parking and garden large enough for our dog. An interesting village with local pub and the owners Pele tower next door. Owner helpful and friendly . Excellent location for exploring Northumberland. Would recommend and would return.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at The Lodge, from arrival it felt like a home from home."

The layout of the ground floor is excellent and we made the most of the amazing views from both the conservatory to the front, and orangery to the rear. We were fortunate to have had a sunny and hot week, so the bifold windows in the orangery were always open in an evening. Just the sounds of sheep and birds it was bliss. The property is extremely comfortable and thoughtfully furnished. A couple of niggles which let it down slightly - on arrival the kitchen (orangery) floor had not been swept, and there were crumbs over the worktops. It didn't take long for us to rectify this, but it would have been nice not to have needed to. Also, the front garden was in some need of maintenance, the grass desperately needed cutting and the flowers were struggling through the weeds. Elsdon is a great spot for exploring and The Lodge is ideally situated. We can't wait to visit again next year.

  • "The Lodge was very comfortable, clean and well-equipped (maybe some serving spoons would be useful and we coudn't find any extra bin bags for the rubbish)."

It was well situated to get to local tourist sites and loads of lovely walks. The views from the house were stunning, in all directions. And I loved finding out about the history of the pele tower. As we were staying for 2 weeks, we did expect to find arrangements for a change of bed linen and towels but this didn't happen - we found some "not such good quality" towels in a cupboard and washed the bed linen ourselves. Apart from that minor inconvenience, we had an excellent holiday.

  • "The Lodge was lovely."

Could not fault the cleanliness. Spotlessly clean. Probably the best cottage we have ever stayed in. Elsdon is the perfect base for exploring the area with easy access to places of interest. The village has a pub which serves lunches and evening meals at a very reasonable price. Close by there is a coffee shop run by a lovely couple who are very welcoming and a font of knowledge of the local area. Will be booking again.

John gave us a great welcome and the extra touches when we arrived were much appreciated. There are so many interesting places to visit within a short distance and Elsdon is a gem of a village. The Tower, a beautiful church, a friendly pub and even a fabulous Motte and Bailey. We will definitely return. Graham.

We were made very welcome, and found it very comfortable, and an excellent setting off point for days out - beautiful wild moors, and plenty of castles and gardens, and runs to a beautiful coastline. The enclosed garden provided a safe and welcome place for visiting dogs, and an easy to light wood burner provided cosy evenings in. Certainly we can recommend this Lodge.

About the location

ELSDON

Otterburn 2 miles; Rothbury 10 miles.

Set in the heart of the Cheviots, on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, the unspoilt village of Elsdon lies in a sheltered hollow amidst beautiful fells, rolling moorland and woodlands. The area is steeped in history, and has numerous listed sites within the Parish, dominated by the fortified Pele Tower. The village of Elsdon has been described as the perfect Northumbrian village, with an ancient parish church, an extensive village green and the remains of a Motte and Bailey Castle, as well as the famous gibbet at the summit of Gallow Hill, with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. There are several pubs within a 15-minutes drive of the cottage, including The Redesdale Arms, a 16th century coaching inn known locally as the 'First and Last' Inn on the way to Scotland. There is a good range of shops in the small but attractive market town of Rothbury within easy driving distance, and with the National Cycle Route (No 68) running close by, this is spectacular walking and cycling country. A peaceful area full of interest to explore!
