  • "Good location, quiet with lovely views."

The games room is a lovely addition for anyone but would be especially great if travelling with children. Heating is night storage so really not ideal if coming home and it’s chilly as no heating you can instantly put on. On arrival we were advised there was a rally on our departure day so we had to leave an hour earlier than advertised otherwise we would be stuck until 5.30!!! First accommodation we have visited with no welcome pack.

Thank you for your feedback for Courtyard Cottage. The night storage heaters are turned off during the summer months, and do take a while to heat up when switched on, but we have an electric heater we could have lent you if you had asked us. The Jim Clark Rally is an annual event which we have no control over, and for one day a year, in May, our road is closed from 9.30am until 5.30pm; I'm sorry if this inconvenienced you. We now offer a welcome pack to all our guests as well as the tea, coffee + sugar we already provide (and logs and coal in the winter months) Property Owner

This beautiful cottage in such a peaceful location is ideally placed for exploring both the Scottish Borders and Northumberland and we enjoyed this stunning area. After a warm welcome from Jane, we settled into the cottage which is beautifully furnished and very well equipped and had everything we could need (as we cook quite a bit). We enjoyed a cosy open fire on a couple of evenings whilst watching wildlife from the lounge. Such a relaxing stay. We didn’t get chance to use the games room, hopefully next time. Highly recommend and we would definitely return.

Thank you so much for your feedback, it was lovely to meet you both. I’m delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Courtyard Cottage and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful rural cottage set in gorgeous countryside."

Perfect for a peaceful break, lots of walks right on the doorstep. Brilliant large garden/paddock for our dog - great that he could have a good run (the owners have 2 labradors who Basil loved!) Good facilities, well equipped kitchen, immaculately clean. Games room was great, we loved being able to have use of these facilities on a regular basis. Suggestions: Although we had a lovely time, a few things could easily be done to just make it that bit more relaxing. Advertised as dog friendly at £15 supplement (we have a 2 year old large golden doodle) - on arrival Jane met us and dropped in the conversation that dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms at all and need to be kept out and kept off all furniture. Although we managed with this, it was not what we expected when booking a dog friendly cottage and paying a £15 supplement for taking dogs? It could cause an issue for some dogs that may be used to sleeping in the owners room. We understand the need to keep furniture clean and in good condition. It would be more relaxing to be fully dog friendly but advertise that owners bring blankets/large throws (if your dog is used to being near you) and these are used instead of trying to keep them out of bedrooms. Secondly, although the owners home is next door, this isn't something that would stop me booking a holiday. However, the fact that there feels like a lack of privacy could easily be rectified. The owners are in and out of the attached garage to the cottage every day (8am on Easter Monday the garage door was opened and woke us up). We then received a text message shortly after to tell us that we left a light on and ensure we don't do it again. Even though the cottage is beautiful and the owners are very welcoming, I felt a sense of being on edge incase we did something wrong, we kept the curtains shut in the kitchen as they would be able to see straight in when walking to and from the garage or using the shared washing line (outside the lounge window).

Thank you for your positive comments about our cottage. We follow Sykes own policy concerning the "No dogs in bedrooms or on the furniture" for reasons of hygiene, especially as many of our guests do not bring dogs with them. The £15 supplement is for the extra cleaning required.I went in to the Games Room to turn off the 4 strip lights that had been left on all night. We rarely go in to the garage or Games Room when we have guests staying in the cottage, however our garden implements and lawn mower are stored there over winter. They have now been moved to our field shed for the summer months. We totally respect our guests privacy at all times. Jane Andrew Property Owner

  • "The person who left -ve feedback relating to their holiday in March 2023 obviously didn't do any research in terms of the cottage location."

The map on Sykes website accurately identifies the cottage being close to Fogo. It doesn't take much skill to identify the location of the cottage and its surroundings on Google Maps Satellite view which clearly shows there are four properties at this location. This is our second holiday at Courtyard Cottage (our first being in September 2021). A personal welcome from the owner(s) is much better ( in our opinion) than arriving at a property which uses an impersonal key safe. The owners of Courtyard Cottage are very nice people and we have found their local knowledge to be invaluable. It's inevitable, given the owners live next door, that guests will see them from time to time particularly when the owners are out gardening or carrying out maintenance. We don't see this as being an issue. My only criticism is the property details on Sykes website does not state that guests do not have exclusive use of the games room and tennis court. We haven't gone to Courtyard Cottage twice now because it has these facilities (we're senior citizens). We go because we love the Borders area of Scotland. Most Border towns are within easy driving range of the cottage (as are Holy Island, Keilder Forest). I think the fact that we have spent two holidays at Courtyard Cottage speaks volumes and we have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to others.

  • "I booked this cottage based on the description of it being isolated, only to find out a week before our holiday started, that in actual fact, the owner lives right next door to the holiday cottage."

This information is not stated in the description anywhere. Had I known, I wouldn't have booked it at all. I have booked countless holiday cottages with various booking sites in the past. Not once have I had to have a 'Meet & Greet' with the owner. The key code is normally sent via email a few days pre-holiday start date , you simply turn up, put the code in, job done. After all, there is always a handy information book somewhere - should you need it. Having said this, the owner living next door wouldn't normally bother me IF we were left alone. Let's just say that the lengthy 'Meet & Greet' felt uncomfortably awkward... Indeed, having just pulled up outside, the owner seemingly appeared from nowhere, and we were immediately told to move our camper van in case her husband needed to park his car in the garage (adjoining the holiday property.) Then we were asked where our son was, and if he was getting out the van. We'd literally just pulled up! Maybe he was asleep? Maybe he didn't want to get out at that exact moment? Perhaps she thought we were hiding a few other people in there? Back to the farcial 'Meet & Greet, and let me assure you, no stone was left unturned as the owner ascertained we knew EXACTLY what was expected of us. After the owner had completed her award-winning spiel, we cautiously entered the property, feeling slightly miffed, and highly cautious - should we dislodge a fibre on the new beige carpet, or our little dog decided to jump on to the new sofa, or much worse, enter a bedroom! The cottage itself is lovely. Credit where credit is due - it's absolutely spotless. It's definitely the most well equipped cottage we have stayed in. Unfortunately, this doesn't end here. The owner popped up another THREE times during our stay. The first time (to be fair) was to warn us that the local farmers were shooting the birds in the fields as they had planted new crops. Okay, no one wants to be shot on holiday... The second time we had left the radiators on in the games room - the same games room we thought was for our exclusive use during our stay (also adjoining the holiday property, externally.) It didn't say in the holiday description that the owner and her tennis buddies may enter it at will if rain ruins their game. Wonder what would have happened if we had actually been in the games room at the time. Would we have been expected to vacate it? By the third visit, we were feeling very tired of our lack of privacy. We just wanted to be left alone to enjoy our 'isolated' holiday. Oh, and I should also mention there is no curtain hanging behind the glass-paned front door. The owners go back and forth to their garage for various reasons and can see straight in! Indeed, within minutes of our departure (carefully planned and executed escape, not on departure day), we got a text. The owner must have literally been looking through the door/windows to have known we had left! Sorry, but I won't be coming back, and in the future, I will make careful enquiries about the holiday cottages we pay hard-earned money for.

I am sorry that this guest chose the wrong cottage and sadly this was not the property he was looking for - it certainly does not mention the word “Isolated” on the Sykes cottage website. The main house is approximately 50 metres from the cottage and there is a small wood between the two properties which ensures guests have privacy. The “Meet and Greet” is part of a personal and professional approach to ensures guests are well informed and comfortable for their stay and I have had no complaints before. This is the first time I have had a bad review so understandably I have been taken by surprise. Finally, listed in the reviews below are numerous comments from our many satisfied returning guests as well as first time visitors, which speak for themselves. Property Owner

The cottage and both very clean and well equipped. In a beautiful area and the views out of the back windows are lovely. The paddock and surrounding fields are brilliant for dogs, dogs aren't allowed on furniture or in the bedrooms so if your dog is use to a high level of home comforts or being with you at all times it might not be the most suitable.
