  • "We had a fabulous stay at the Old Newsagent."

It was in a great location for Alnwick Castle and gardens as well as other local attractions including Bamburgh Castle and Cragside. Barter Books, which is five minutes up the road from the house, is a definite must. The accommodation had everything for a comfortable stay. Thank you for a lovely week.

  • "8 of us stayed at the old newsagents from Thursday evening to Sunday morning."

What a fantastic place to stop whilst exploring all Alnwick and Northumberland has to offer. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay right in the heart of Alnwick but a beautiful, spacious house (the house is like a Tardis) I would highly recommend staying at the old newsagents and would love to come back to stay here and hopefully become an annually trip up to Alnwick/Northumberland. Plenty of pubs and restaurants to hand, if you love a curry, you must visit Mumbai probably the best Indians we have ever ate.

  • "Thank you for an amazing week in this lovely town house."

I celebrated my 50th birthday with my husband, grown up children and my 82 year old mum. She loved her privacy on the ground floor and would join us on an evening in the lovely lounge which was decorated for Christmas. Both kitchens were used for cooking with every appliance needed. Great location in Alnwick and would recommend Dirty Bottles restaurant for eating. Great shops nearby with plenty of cosy pubs. Ideal for visiting all of Northumbrian coast line including Berwick upon tweed and Holy Island. A week to remember in this large family house!

  • "Thank you for a wonderful week away."

The Old Newsagents is a beautiful property, decorated to a high standard. It’s a large property but it also warm and cosy! The house had everything we needed and more. We thought the welcome pack was such a lovely touch and it made our stay feel extra special! The location is perfect , we loved being able to walk to one of the many lovely restaurants of an evening and in the day time the short walk to the castle and gardens, to let the kids blow off some steam, was a real bonus. I would definitely book this property again in the future!

Very well located in the centre of Alnwick a short stroll from everything. The property itself is spacious and beautifully decorated with everything we needed for a family getaway. Owner very helpful when we needed to contact her about a very minor issue. Would highly recommend and would be more than happy to return in the future.

  • "Lovely spacious house in a central location."

Very clean and had everything we needed. Great for the non-drivers in our party. The only problem we had was with parking. The house is advertised as having parking, but when the final details come through, it says it's for small cars. Ours is a medium size car and we overhung the pavement slightly. We came down on our last day to find someone had broken off the rear wiper.

  • "The property is brilliant for a family/group stay as there is so much space and the standard of accommodation is very high, plus a great location."

Please let the vendor know that we couldn't get the bottom oven on the ground floor to heat up very much so probably needs attention, but not too much of a problem for us.

  • "Alnwick is a great place to stay when visiting Northumberland."

The Old Newsagent’s is a Nice house with comfortable living room, lovely bedrooms and nice bathrooms. It’s on a busy road, which was generally not a problem for us apart from getting the car out of the parking spot, which I’d definitely not recommended for two cars, even if they are small - you need to stop the traffic at times to get out. Even though there were six of us staying we didn’t use the downstairs kitchen much as the upstairs kitchen was much more pleasant - a lovely place to sit. There weren’t really enough glasses and crockery to spread over two kitchens.

  • "We had an excellent stay and would not hesitate to hire the property again."

A couple of issues which could cause problems depending upon the attitude of the hirer of the property- A) the cleaning team was still in situ at 3pm when we arrived and we were told to return at 4pm. The booking literature clearly stated that the property would be available from 3pm. B) the ground floor bedroom was cold. A heater was provided promptly after the first night but whether that is a long term solution needs to be looked into.

So having a place where we could all come together comfortably was very important. The Old Newsagent's fitted the bill perfectly. Stunningly beautiful property with everything that was needed to enjoy our time away. The beds were so comfortable and all rooms tastefully decorated, and the welcome pack was a very nice touch, especially the chilled bottle of bubbles!! We were all had such a lovely time that we have already booked for next year's catch up.

  • "We thought that this was an excellent property with all the facilities we needed."

The proximity to the town for shopping and restaurants was fantastic. We thought it was very thoughtful of the owner to leave us a bottle of Prosecco, milk, biscuits, fudge etc. much appreciated. We hesitate to mention it but hooks or towel rails in the en-suite bathroom would be most welcome. We would definitely stay here again.

  • "The property is in a fabulous location, in the heart of Alnwick, great to walk around the town."

The parking is extremely tight, especially if you have a longer vehicle, the rear of our 2 cars were stuck out on the pavement and the passengers had to alight via the drivers side. The property itself was very spacious and the bedrooms were lovely and big but the large rooms did mean we had to turn the heating up as they felt cold. The welcome pack was thoughtful and appreciated and the bedding was fresh and clean however the downstairs bathroom was a little underwhelming. It is very small and cramped and not great if you are taller, it also wasn’t particularly clean unfortunately. The other bathrooms and kitchens were clean though. All in all a generally pleasant property, well decorated and perfectly placed for visiting the area.

  • "Excellent location for exploring Alnwick, the town, castle and countryside."

Wide range of restaurants, including the Tree House and bars in easy walking distance. Train from Alnmouth, 10mins away, to Edinburgh, an hour on the train. The parking is very tight for two cars and perhaps information on where to park if there are more than two cars or if cars are large would be helpful to have readily available and easily accessible in the property. In our case we were able to park at the property without a problem.

  • "6 of us( 3 couples) had a fabulous week in this cottage in Alnwick."

What a lovely Georgian building, centrally placed in this pretty town. The cottage had everything we needed and was very well- equipped....plenty of seating, very comfortable beds , plenty of storage space and cupboards and a lovely little garden at the back to sit out and enjoy the sun. Spread over a few floors, there was plenty of room for all of us...and we were most impressed by the large TV's in the reception rooms and bedrooms. The place was immaculately clean . Being in such an excellent location, we were able to stroll into town, walk to the castle, walk to Barter Books ( amazing place ) . We had a few trips to the coast with its stunning beaches and castles. Lindisfarne was well worth a visit. Excellent eating places are within walking distance ( best to book beforehand ). The pub over the road is excellent...also an Italian restaurant " Cafe Tirrano " and " The Dirty Bottles ". Had delicious fish and chips too ...from a nearby shop. All in all, we had a fabulous time and the cottage could not have been more perfect.

  • "The Old Newsagent’s was fabulous holiday accommodation."

It was very well equipped and we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We were a party of 7 and there were plenty of options to have your own space and equally we were able to all be together. We would definitely recommend/book again. Alnwick is a lovely town and there are lots of good restaurants and pubs. We found that it was best to book a day or so in advance as places were fully booked on the day. Sherkhan and Dirty Bottles were our favourites. From Alnmouth train station you can be in Edinburgh or Durham in an hour or so and we had a lovely day out in Durham. There are lovely beaches to visit along the coast and this is definitely one of our favourite holiday locations in the UK.

About the location

ALNWICK

Alnmouth 4 miles; Bamburgh 15 miles; Rothbury 10 miles.

The attractive and historic market town of Alnwick is dominated by Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The Castle Gardens, opened in 2002, are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden, which will delight novice and experienced gardeners alike. The castle is also famous as the setting for Hogwarts School featured in the Harry Potter films! The town's narrow streets have seen little change since the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through and the Market Place, with its stone cross, is still the central feature and the ideal venue for the weekly Saturday market. Alnwick offers a good selection of shops, pubs and places to eat and there is plenty to see and do, with miles of golden sandy beaches, numerous castles and boat trips to the famous Farne Islands all available nearby. Altogether a superb location for exploring Northumberland and its stunning Heritage Coastline.
