  • "This is our second stay here and we've booked to return end of November."

a very clean, warm welcoming cottage. we loved the new sofa, really comfy and as i have a spinal issue, it was perfect. as we don't have dogs, its good going somewhere which doesn't smell of them. wouldn't know they are allowed. Just wondered if the cleaner could remember to check cupboards in kitchen. i found two half eaten packs of moldy biscuits!! the other minor point is not having wardrobe space, isn't a problem as we use the spare room but its not mentioned how tight the space is and no storage . some guests may find it a problem. the milk and coffee bags were a nice surprise thankyou.

Glad to hear that you had such a positive experience, staying in Aln Cottage. It is a quirky little cottage which we have tried to make as comfortable as possible. Our housekeeper is very thorough indeed, hence how you would not know if dogs had stayed or not, though apologies for the overlooked biscuits! We removed the old fashioned wardrobes when decorating and supplied plenty of hooks for hanging up garments - including an ingenious hanging rail just beside the landing! We also chose the reclining sofa and chair which are wonderful to relax in after a hard day's sightseeing/ cafe-visiting. Enjoy your next stay in November! Kind regards, Susan & Steve. • "Had a fabulous holiday in this great little gem."

Our first time visiting Northumberland and Aln Cottage was ideally positioned for seeing all the sights and beautiful countryside. It was great that we had a parking space and could walk to the castle and pubs and restaurants. The cottage had everything you need and was clean and comfy. It is in the middle of everything but so peaceful as it is tucked away down a little passageway. Highly recommend it. We had a brilliant time. The cottage and the area exceeded our expectations.

Such fantastic comments! Thank you so much for that: couldn't have put it better ourselves. We always have such a lovely time when we stay in the cottage, making full use of the pubs, castle, quaint little cafes and all the brilliant things at your fingertips, with sweeping, breath-taking beaches just a short drive away. Please do come again; you will be very welcome. Kind regards, Susan and Steve. Property Owner

  • "Loved the whole experience of the cottage, Alnwick and the wider Northumberland area."

Locals lovely, neighbours lovely and a great parking spot as I drive a pickup truck. Bed amazingly comfy and loved the lounge chairs that , at the click of a switch turned into luxury slouching chairs. I've genuinely never been on one of these before. As others have said cottage is a little dated in the kitchen but absolutely nothing wrong with it, I'm still using a similar era kitchen at home with no plans to change. Minute gripes.... Front door can be a bit difficult to open but I do have arthritis in my thumbs. Could do with advice on what to do with glass for recycling. We couldn't find anywhere (not that we were searching high and low) so bought bottles home with us. Finally, if I read your instructions correctly, a dog isn't supposed to go anywhere in the cottage but the kitchen. This is not practical. Fully appreciate not letting them upstairs but we weren't going to even try and stop our little jack russell girl joining us in the lounge. She knows she's not allowed on furniture or to put her paws on them, she doesn't at home either so we trust her. Anyway, love to stay with you again in the near future, thanks for a great week

So glad that you had such a great time in Aln Cottage and that you found so many things to your liking. The reclining sofa and chair are recent and we love them too! The 'minute gripes' were actually very helpful: we are always looking for ways to improve people's experience. Yes, the kitchen is a bit dated and that bothers some people more than others. We chose not to gut the place when we bought it and are trying to improve it as we go. The front door is a bit sticky. We thought that was the wet weather. Will look into that. The best place for recycling glass is in Greenwell Road car park on the other side of the town centre. We will make sure that the information for that is in the cottage. Dogs are allowed in the lounge but not on the furniture - we will check the wording on that on Sykes' description. Our dog goes in the lounge and would like to go upstairs too, but we use the stairgate provided to stop her doing that! We were so pleased to hear that you would like to come again: please do! Feel it could do with updating slightly in the kitchen and bathroom. Enjoyed the reclining chair and sofa. Double bed mattress was a bit lumpy and again could probably do with a new one. Great location and was bigger downstairs than I expected.

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback: most helpful. We find the bed very comfortable but will reflect on your comment about the mattress. We will consider how to update the kitchen and bathroom to improve the experience of staying in Aln Cottage. Kind regards, Susan & Steve. Property Owner

Thought back yard enclosed, need to state not to people with dogs.

Thank you for your review: glad you liked the cottage and situation. It is a perfect location. I think you might have meant lovely cottage - don't think it's lively! Sorry to hear that the light mornings woke you up at 6am. We did add curtains to the blinds already there but not black-out. Will look into that. Apologies also that you were expecting an enclosed back yard. The back of the cottage opens onto a small non-enclosed courtyard area which is not mentioned at all on the website description. We sometimes move the bins onto the path/walkway to set up the folding table and chairs from the cupboard and our little dog has no problems sitting out there although I do sometimes tie her to something to stop her pestering people for attention! We will speak to Sykes about including this in their description. Regards, Susan & Steve Property Owner

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and for your 100% rating. That was very encouraging. The owner has been really thoughtful on giving it a homely feel. Our only recommended improvement would be the water pressure and temperature control in the shower. It was very temperamental and you had to run it for a long time before the temperature became regulated. Did not ruin our stay though and would definitely book again if returning to the area.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. We really appreciate your comments; we love our little cottage and it's great to know that our attempts to make it homely and comfortable are working for others! • "What a find!"

Right in the centre of town, and walking distance to everything in Alnwick! It was like a home-from-home with everything thought of to make sure our stay was trouble-free, and it was spotlessly clean. Only 2 things to mention that weren't perfect, the first of which was that the hot water tended to be temperamental when showering, and secondly the double mattress was very hard - I found it quite uncomfortable, but I know you can't please everyone when it comes to mattresses! We were delighted with our stay, though, and next time (because it's a brilliant place) I'll see if I can't pack a mattress topper!

So glad that you had such a lovely time in Aln Cottage. It is in a perfect location! Thank you for your really positive feedback, and for the comments to address. We asked our very helpful gas technician about the boiler and he said it is working perfectly but it is, of course, elderly. There is a bit of a technique! There is a temperature controller for hot water on the boiler which you can turn up or down. I usually crank it up before running a bath but turn it back down so the water is not scalding for hand washing. When we replace the boiler, we will get a more powerful one which should control the temperature better. As for the mattress, that is a tricky one. I find it far too comfortable and sleep like a log! I am sorry that it wasn't so for you. Regards, Susan & Steve. Property Owner

  • "We really appreciated the central location of the house."

We were both starting to develop sore backs from sitting on the couch and suggest this is well overdue an upgrade. We found the shower unreliable and found that using without the central heating being in use almost impossible to get a warm shower. Unfortunately the main bedroom radiator developed a leak from the control valve on the Thursday morning, tryed to contact by phone on the number supplied,. Gave up after ringing for nearly 3 minutes,...no answer system? Sent an email to yourselves and left a note for the cleaner.

Thank you for your feedback; it really helps us to improve upon the cottage and to ensure that everyone has a positive experience in Aln Cottage. It is in a great location. We were sorry to hear that you found the sofa uncomfortable. That hasn't been our experience but we do realise that it is rather elderly. We have just ordered a new sofa and chair for the cottage, due for delivery in time for the 2024 season. We were also sorry to hear that there were problems with the hot water/ radiator and that you couldn't raise a response from Sykes. We have also contacted them to sort this out. However, I could not get the DVD to connect with the TV. On Sunday and Monday I telephoned Sykes for someone to fix it. A plumber arrived on Wednesday with a more modern DVD player - he pointed out that the existing player had Scart connectors not compatible with the more modern TV. He seemed to know what the trouble was. If so, why wasn't the new DVD player already installed? The bathroom sink hot tap was badly worn and needed either a new washer or replacement. The non-slip rubber bath mat was perished and split.. It came apart when lifted from the bath.

We value your feedback - thank you for taking the time to compose it. We hope that you had an enjoyable holiday despite the issues that you encountered. On arrival we find that the bedroom units have been ripped out and replaced with two drawer units and a four peg coat rack on the wall. There is now nowhere to hang your clothes,, not very good for the ladies. Your website still shows the bedroom having wardrobe space and there is no mention of the change so you know what you are coming to. This is most inconvenient when staying for a week, the property owners have made a big mistake not providing wardrobe space. We will probably look for somewhere else next time in Alnwick.

About the location

ALNWICK

Alnmouth 4 miles; Bamburgh 15 miles; Rothbury 10 miles.

The attractive and historic market town of Alnwick is dominated by Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. The Castle Gardens, opened in 2002, are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden, which will delight novice and experienced gardeners alike. The castle is also famous as the setting for Hogwarts School featured in the Harry Potter films! The town's narrow streets have seen little change since the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through and the Market Place, with its stone cross, is still the central feature and the ideal venue for the weekly Saturday market. Alnwick offers a good selection of shops, pubs and places to eat and there is plenty to see and do, with miles of golden sandy beaches, numerous castles and boat trips to the famous Farne Islands all available nearby. Altogether a superb location for exploring Northumberland and its stunning Heritage Coastline.
