  • "The property was tired and dated and wasn't particularly well cleaned, some fixtures and fittings were not really fit for purpose The whole of the sink in the front twin bedroom was a mess, loose tap fittings, curtain fittings coming out of wall, sink in kitchen was backing up when dishwasher was on, an awful smell emanating from back shower room ( i think this has been mentioned before on a previous review), poor quality and stained bedding."

Beds were very uncomfortable. Back lawn hadn't been cut for ages and was full of nettles (had grandson with us, so couldn't use lawn) ,the outside area was poorly kept and generally uninviting and not very secure. Could not lock patio door properly. Although the location was central there are no real views. Everything about the place was basic and just about adequate.....for 2.2k for a week we expected better, ....overall disappointing. The only real saving grace was the weather. Wouldn't recommend ...and think Sykes need to do more checking of the properties on their books

Thank you for your time in reviewing our property. We are sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay. Since then we have updated the front bedroom/en-suite & have addressed the smell from the back bedroom shower room. We have a Gardner on board now who attends on a regular basis & have replaced the side wooden gates which are now secure. Property Owner

  • "The house had a closed-up, unwelcoming feel when we arrived."

It obviously hadn’t been cleaned or aired that day. I don’t know how long it had been left for, but it must have been a while as it needed a thorough vacuuming before we could settle in. There seemed to be an infestation of spiders. An enormous one had made a nest in one of the basins – it must have been there for some time. There were lots of leaves in the hall that had obviously blown in through the front door at some point. I would say the whole house needs a deep clean. There are lots of shelves and ledges and little nooks with ornaments, and it’s all very dusty. The windows need cleaning, especially looking out into the garden. The lawn hadn’t been cut in quite a while, so the garden didn’t feel very welcoming either. The garden furniture could also have done with a clean, and some cushions and a parasol for the table would be nice. The bedding was clean and there were plenty of towels, but they were nearly all mis-matched and not the best quality. One had bleach marks all over it. The pillows were all very thin and poor. All of the mattresses, except one, were dreadful – you could feel every spring. There is only one usable shower – the blue bathroom only has a shower attachment on the bath taps, though there is nothing wrong with the water pressure. The twin room has a shower, but the water only comes out as a trickle and the shower head is fixed right at one side, so it’s impossible to actually wash in it. The basin in that room is all mouldy round the taps, and one of the taps is extremely loose. There is good water pressure in the main bedroom’s ensuite – and this room has the only comfortable mattress – but there is an appalling smell from the drains, which does permeate the entire house when you have to close the windows to go out for the day. Positives: good, quiet position. Very easy walk into Bamburgh. Wi-Fi worked perfectly the whole time we were there.

Thank you for reviewing our property. So sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay. We have addressed your issues with our agents. A deep clean is done on a regular basis. The twin bedroom en-suite has been replaced & updated & basin in bedroom removed. New garden furniture has been put in place & we have a Gardner onboard. Property Owner

Only small problem was a smell in the main bedroom's en-suite.

Thank you for your feedback. We have now rectified the drainage smell in main bedroom en-suite. Hope you’ll come & visit us soon. Property Owner

  • "Property was good."

Excellent location. Clean and tidy. Kitchen well equipped however a better chopping board and sharper knife would be good. Decor slightly dated. However overall our stay was perfect. We would definitely book again.

Thank you for your feedback. We have taken note of your comments & will rectify. Hope you’ll come back & visit us soon. Property Owner

  • "The propery needed some maintenance - eg doors to garden were difficult to open, fridge needed defrosting, the dishwasher tablet dispenser didn't work properly."

The kitchen was poorly equiped - there was not even a cafetiere or filter to make coffee, no tupperware boxes (there were some bottoms but no lids!), no sharp knives etc and no work space.

Thank you for your feedback. We have taken note of your comments & will be equipping the kitchen with the above mentioned. Property Owner

Needs replacing. Lock on door into jack & jill bathroom from bedroom door kept jamming. When we left it wouldn't lock at all

Thanks for your feedback. We have since replaced the lock on the jack & jill bedroom. New garden furniture is now in place. We hope you will be visiting us again soon. Property Owner

  • "On first glance we were pleased with the property as described and pictured however we soon discovered it was lacking in cleanliness and upkeep."

We found the highchair requested for my 10 month old in the sunroom covered in dead woodlice. We left this untouched and had to struggle with pillows and towels on a dining chair for the week. Some of the towels were old and bleach stained, taps loose and not very clean, doors creaked everywhere. The house seemed to be full of things the owner didn't want for themselves anymore, books, kitchenware. The TV certainly needs upgrading. One concern was the fridge that did not close properly and the freezer in need of defrosting. The garden is also tired and the outside furniture worn and unsafe. The quilt in the cream bedroom was so thick we couldn't use it. This could be a wonderful property but sadly it needs some work to feel like a true holiday home.

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. As this was some time ago we have addressed all the points raised & hope you will return to the property soon & enjoy a better stay. Property Owner

  • "Had no hot water on day 3 ."

Northumbria cottages dealt with it very quickly but we had run out of oil for hot water. I think the oil should be checked regularly so this doesn’t happen. A note left in each bedroom to strip beds and put in blue bag but there was only one blue bag . Hard to fit bedding and towels for three rooms in one bag. Cottage was lovely and clean and we really enjoyed our stay. Would have been nice if there was a barbecue . We did have a swarm of bees in garden one day so couldn’t sit out. One of neighbours said someone near by had bee hives.

Thanks for taking the time to review our property. We are sorry you had a few problems & hope it won’t stop you returning. We have addressed the issues raised. Property Owner

In addition to the above " I toilet would not flush properly The property was dusty- particularly rugs The kitchen equipment needs updating - no sharp knives and lack of baking trays I door fails to close properly

Thanks for your feedback. There is wi-fi at the property although this can be intermittent. Our cleaners have been informed to be more thorough & there has been refurbishment carried out to the property along with the kitchen being better equipped. Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed our stay in Rokeby."

It would have been helpful to know in advance what kitchen implements were available as some things were missing i.e. a baking tray. The knives were very blunt so a knife sharpener would also be useful. Although the house did indeed have Wi-Fi as advertised, it was not fit for purpose as extremely slow & one member of our party could not join in the work meeting she had planned. Given that phone signal is poor, a faster Wi-Fi would really help.

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. The issues you had have now been addressed. Wi-fi can sometimes be intermittent but on the whole works most of the time. This is the case for most of the village. We hope you will have a return visit. Property Owner

About the location

BAMBURGH

Seahouses 3.5 miles; Beadnell 5.1 miles; Alnwick 16.9 miles.

The village’s sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic fortress - Bamburgh Castle - make Bamburgh one of Northumberland’s major visitor attractions. The castle can be seen for miles and dominates this part of the county’s coastline. Today it remains home to the family of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public on a daily basis. Although overshadowed by the great castle, Bamburgh village is picturesque with neat grey stone cottages facing a manicured village green. There are excellent pubs, hotels with restaurants and a small selection of village shops. There are golf courses in Bamburgh and nearby Seahouses, and within easy reach are more wide sandy beaches, lovely fishing villages, stunning castles and coastal islands to explore along the dramatic Heritage Coast. There are numerous other attractions also a short drive away, including the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the historic walled border town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A superb base for exploring Northumberland.
