  • "Upon arrival, there was a sign saying “do not use the fireplace for health and safety reasons”, an empty petrol can by the back door and a smell of petrol in the kitchen and living room."

As we arrived quite late we shut the doors (to avoid the smell entering the rest of the property) and continued with the holiday. After a couple of days the smell remained, we called Sykes who sent someone to the property. A few hours later we were informed there’s no problem and the smell of petrol “meets required standards.” Not much we could do so we stayed for the duration and then left on checkout. A real shame as the property itself was lovely, you do not expect to feel slightly unwell from petrol fumes on holiday however.

A beautiful looking property with high ceilings and wooden beams looks stunning and All the facilities were there( had trouble finding cutlery) but a phone call later and a hidden drawer solved the mystery it really could do with a deep clean - you can forgive spiders webs high up in the eves but in lamp shades next to the sofa and at the side of the sofa in corners of skirting ( a quick hoover would have sorted) The living room tv was extremely dusty and the shower door runners were very grimy ( small things but easily fixed) and we can’t be sure but we both thought maybe the bedding wasn’t fresh We were disappointed with our 3 night stay mid October ( only managed 2) went home early - it was freezing cold (unable to use log burner a sign stuck on the front informing us of health and safety issues) and the heating system just doesn’t warm the property adequately Not a problem for a summer stay but not recommended for the cold weather Also when leaving the key security box wouldn’t lock so had to drop keys in at seahouses office

  • "The cottage was lovely and in a great location, just cross the road and onto the beach for long walks."

The kitchen was really well equipped and the general decor was well done and cosy. Cottage is in a good location for getting out and about with Bamburgh close by which is one of our favourite places. The only downside to Coral Cottage was the EV charger which did not work, this was a welcome feature and much needed on arrival. On contacting the number we were given got through to Northumbria Coast and Country Cottages, we had to ring four times over four days, not once did they return a call telling us any updates. I understand that things do go wrong but assume this had not been checked as unlike the wood burner we weren't notified that it was not working. We got told on the third phone call that the owners had said we could plug into the cottage, this was not possible, for one thing we hadn't brought the plug in three pin charger but in any case it wouldn't have reached a socket and even if it had it would have meant having the front door open while charging which obviously is not practical, I explained that we didn't have it to the lady on the phone and she mentioned trying to get something out to us, again, no call back. Due to this we had to be looking for charging points on occasions when planning days out, not what we had expected to be doing. The poor customer service is what has annoyed us and I think the owners should be aware. I contacted Sykes on our account as it says to do but so far have had no reply other than an automated one.

We were pleasantly surprised how close the beach was to the property and the sea view we hadn't realised we would have from the garden and bedroom window. The electric car charging point was an added benefit

  • "Coral cottage is ideally situated and the cottage is clean and lovely."

The garden outside is perfect for the dogs and it has a lovely big kitchen and all the necessities for an enjoyable stay. The only criticism would be the tv’s in the bedrooms dont work properly ( handset with tv) and the coffee machine which looks like a treat does not come with any pods so was a tad disappointing. This cottage could be made into a cottage for four not just three as the second bedroom is big enough. If this happens please come back to me as I will definitely book it again . Thank you for the use of your lovely cottage

The new kitchen and shower are both an added luxury, well thought out. We had problems charging the car on the first evening but this was quickly sorted out the next day. And the new fridge was not closing properly, but again this was sorted out quickly. Great problem solving by all concerned!! We will be back - great, peaceful location and lovely beach walks.

I've been in oil-heated properties before and not smelt it as strong as this. Also, I was very frustrated that the window cleaner came during our stay and delayed us leaving. It made us feel very uncomfortable to have strangers at the windows and surely this could have been arranged during the 6 hours that were allocating for handover.

It took us a while to locate the cutlery (it’s in a draw in another draw!) but, apart from that, it would definitely be our first choice for our next trip up to Northumberland. The seating is comfortable, as are the beds and there is everything you need to make it a home from home for the duration of your stay. We really loved being so close to the sea, which you can view from the upper deck of the garden. Northumberland has always been our favourite holiday stay and our favourite places, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Beadnell Bay and Holy Island are all just a short drive from the cottage.

The property is very comfortable and well fitted. A couple of notes though, information in the property is out of date, bin days listed are for 2022 and as a consequence the grey bin appears not to have been emptied for weeks, and in fact previous guests have dumped bags and bottles in the middle store, this will encourage vermin. Also washing machine instructions are for a previous washing machine, not much good at all. Moan over, thankyou for a lovely stay.

Before going on holiday I noted that a previous person had commented on this and I therefore thought it would have been addressed. The immediate patio outside the kitchen was a disgrace. My husband swept some of the dirt and old leaves away to stop it coming into the house when we oped the door. Also the front door and surrounds needed attention and was most unwelcoming. At the price we were paying this should have been addressed.

Very well stocked kitchen. Welcome packs very useful. View and beach accessibility not quite as good as expected but didn't detract away from the beautiful surroundings-great for early morning walks. Some small issues: Bed a little hard, power showers great but not easy to get to required temp. Exercise caution as the 'hot' is almost scalding and comes unexpectedly. Windows in kitchen difficult to close and in need of maintenance. Had to clean the windows outside due to accumulated dust and cobwebs. Despite the above the cottage is comfortable and worth it. Lovely place and surroundings.

In particular, we liked that the kitchen was well equipped for self catering and the garden was lovely on the one day we had sun in the evening! We wish we could have used it more. We have a baby so the highchair was much appreciated, but the straps on it were filthy and badly need cleaning. The property in general seemed clean but we did notice a musty smell in the bedroom. However, these are minor issues that did not detract from our stay overall.

This was our second stay. So quiet and so near the sea and great to have a charger for our car. Good that outside had been tidied up since last year so it was easier to get bins out without battling with climbing plants! And great to have toilet rolls provided this year too! My only little grumble was that the patio furniture was really grubby and I had to clean it before use, especially the glass topped table.

  • "The house was adequate for our needs."

However it was disappointing in some aspects in that I feel the advertising was misleading. We chose this house because it looked bright and airy with views to the sea. In reality it was not. I then looked at the advertising again and realised that every light was on in the property when in reality the house is very dark with no outlook whatsoever just looking into a courtyard with cars parked at the windows. I appreciate this is the layout of the house but it should really have been pointed out - we would not have booked this. One thing that should have been sorted was the length of the grass in the upper garden. Clearing after the dog is far easier when the grass is maintained.

Thank you for your feedback – it is really helpful to us when our guests let us know how your time away has been. We’re sorry to hear that you felt the pictures were misleading. It is a standard practice for website images to have all the lights on so that it highlights features of rooms etc. There is an image of the sea taken from the garden area which offers the perspective of where the sea is in proximity to the cottage. We totally appreciate the garden being slightly longer than normal – there have been so many wet days this spring and it has been tricky to get this cut, however we take on board your feedback and apologise for it not having been cut. • "A lovely cottage with patio area and smallish grassed area up a few steps."

The cottage was very comfortable and clean and nicely furnished. The kitchen is well stocked with crockery & cookware and appliances, even a small coffee machine (the type with pods). We did find the two clumsy and awkwardly placed swinging arm lamps either side of the sofa a nuisance and apart from a few general maintenance issues we were not disappointed and enjoyed our stay. The beach is just across the road and down a short footpath and Bamburgh and Seahouses were just a short drive away. In the spirit of constructive feedback the maintenance issues as follows: - The grass needed cutting and garden furniture needed a bit of tlc, inside, cobwebs from the beams, ivy obscuring one of the skylights (knocks against the glass when windy), missing door threshold into the lounge and damaged door threshold in the hall nearest the shower room, rust stains from a slight or previous leak on one of the hallway skylights, also we had to scrape back the stone clippings in the bin store to get the bin in and out and to be able to close the door properly and as you expect guests to put the bins out for collection it might be an idea to update your information booklet. (We looked up the correct day on the council website). Lastly, as mentioned in other reviews, we were disappointed there were no logs for the wood burner, it appears to be BYO! These were minor issues, the cottage and location are great!

The kitchen was extremely well equipped and the lounge had a cosy feel, especially when the log burner was on. No logs or kindling provided though! The property is ideally located for coastal walks and only a couple of miles from Bamburgh. The only observations were that the property was not as clean as we would have expected, and whilst we accept that the property allows pets, there was a distinct animal smell. Despite these points it did not spoil an otherwise very enjoyable stay.

We had a fabulous week of cold but bright frosty weather and loved the beach walks and pub lunches. It was a real bonus for us that it has an electric car charging point which made our first adventure away from home in our EV easy and stress free. Our only issue was that there was no fuel for the wood burning stove. We would have gone better prepared if we had known we needed to take our own wood. Maintenance issues- back door outside handle needs securing, adjuster knob on stove needs grub screw tightening, kitchen clock needs new battery, and the information file needs updating (eg tide timetables and refuse collections out of date)

  • "The property was lovely and well maintained and presented."

Just a couple of points : first of all, the cottage is not that easy to find and directions are not clear, it would be far more welcoming to leave a light on in the cottage for arrival and the heating, even if turned on low. Also a small welcoming gesture would not go amiss. Rarely have we stayed in a cottage where there was not something left out to welcome guests ( a bottle of wine, cake, or something in the fridge with a little note etc)..... it is a nice gesture and always appreciated. Another issue was with the smoke alarm which went off every time we lit the wood burner ( and enough wood for a couple of uses at least should be provided) - that was a real nuisance. The windows need some attention as not easy to open.... and shut. All in all though, we had a lovely time. Northumberland is stunning and evocative, and Coral Cottage was a comfortable place to stay

About the location

BAMBURGH

Seahouses 3.5 miles; Beadnell 5.1 miles; Alnwick 16.9 miles.

The village’s sweeping sandy beaches and dramatic fortress - Bamburgh Castle - make Bamburgh one of Northumberland’s major visitor attractions. The castle can be seen for miles and dominates this part of the county’s coastline. Today it remains home to the family of the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public on a daily basis. Although overshadowed by the great castle, Bamburgh village is picturesque with neat grey stone cottages facing a manicured village green. There are excellent pubs, hotels with restaurants and a small selection of village shops. There are golf courses in Bamburgh and nearby Seahouses, and within easy reach are more wide sandy beaches, lovely fishing villages, stunning castles and coastal islands to explore along the dramatic Heritage Coast. There are numerous other attractions also a short drive away, including the famous Alnwick Castle and Gardens and the historic walled border town, Berwick-upon-Tweed. A superb base for exploring Northumberland.
