  • "We had a fabulous few days of much needed time away in this very spacious and very equipped house."

Everything needed for an extremely comfortable stay was in the house, Garden was stunning and even has a regular gardener. We would definitely love to go back to Castlebrae in the near future. Also weather was excellent so we ventured out to various tourist attractions and even visited the Jail at the top of the hill within walking distance. The beds were very comfortable and clean. excellent nights sleeping. Thank-you .

The house was lovely. Unfortunately, we had the problem with the heating again. It went off on the same night aswell. Again Mandy, the Housekeeper to the rescue. It does appear to involve the signal on the thermostat. Again it was restored. But abit later the water was off. That was involving roadworks outside of the property as the neighbours were off too. I did begin to wonder if the house didn't " like" me !!

The house was everything we wanted from this much needed holiday. Jedburgh and the surrounding area is stunning in Autumn. There was an issue with the central heating, one evening, but the Housekeeper-Mandy quickly contacted the Owners and the good lady wife couldn't have been more supportive and warmth returned!

  • "Kitchen could do with some additions."

We had to buy kitchen towels, dish clothes and pot scrubbers, all of which we left for the next holiday makers. There were no ingredients to cook with even salt and pepper was missing. There was only one tea towel and no hand towel in the kitchen. The ceiling light in the downstairs bedroom had no bulb in it. There was an entry in the visitors’ book a few months ago mentioning this with a comment that the light fitting was broken. Some of the paint work especially on the stairway was in need of a freshen up. The upholstery on dining room chairs and the settee was pretty grubby. Other than that we did like the house.

  • "This home was lovely overall."

Great base for exploring the area. It's situated almost at the top of a steep hill so provides great views and very close to Jedburgh Castle Jail. Parking is on the street but not a problem. Enclosed garden was perfect for our dog although very overgrown. The very efficient gardener arrived during our stay and made such a big difference, it was beautiful. We had trouble getting the oven to work as we are used to gas so it would have been useful to have instructions to hand rather than downloading them, but we managed. Heating instructions would be handy nearer the boiler as we struggled until we came across them in the info folder. The house was very clean throughout but the lack of maintenance to the woodwork made it somewhat tired looking and it would make a massive difference and really lift the appearance and feel of the place. It's clearly been a loved home and would make a fab place for us to return to and we wouldn't hesitate.

I can't really fault the property as was lovely and spotless but some minor maintenance is required. ( loose tap In bathroom and a mattress replacement is due). No food bin or bags but thankfully next door neighbour helped us out. Jedburgh is a fantastic base to see the wonderful historic Scottish history. The borough and people are fabulous and would thoroughly recommend. The hill didn't put me off but was a step too far, As I said, for my mum which meant I had to drive late at night to walk the dogs. • "This is a large comfortable house in a good location for travelling around the Borders area."

Jedburgh itself has a number of historic places to visit and several places to eat and drink, with a butchers and deli. There are a few minor maintenance issues at the house which have been mentioned previously such as the loose toilet seat and tap in the downstairs toilet and the light in the downstairs bedroom but these did not impact on our stay.

  • "Very nice and well located property."

Plenty of space to lounge and relax. The property is fairly clean although there is a maintainence issue which needs to be addressed. The loose toilet seat in the downstairs toilet needs to be repaired. This would appear to have been identified by previous occupants with nothing being done about it.

Thank you for your helpful comments. We are aware of these issues and had called someone in to deal with them. However, we obviously need to look again and are arranging a longer term fix. We hope this did not detract from your stay. Best wishes, JHardy Property Owner

It is a great base for exploring the surrounding area. The property was comfortable and well equipped. When we arrived we came across some maintenance issues which we reported to Sykes via email. They were quick to reply and asked if we required them to be fixed while we were there. The issues were not emergencies so we said no but thought we needed to report them before other guests arrived. One piece of equipment that would be useful would be a clothes horse. We would certainly stay here again.

Thanks for your review- there was a clothes horse in the property last time we were there but it seems to have bolted!! We’ll get another asap. Property Owner

  • "Wow, what a fabulous, spacious property."

The kitchen was very welcoming, and I enjoyed cooking in there. The beds upstairs were extremely comfortable. There are two single beds downstairs which I’d overlooked, I had thought these were upstairs, one is comfortable the other not so. I feel that putting a king /double bed downstairs would work better and either adding a single to a double bedroom or exchanging them would be more beneficial as our youngest child did not want to sleep downstairs by themselves. Unfortunately, the property wasn’t as clean as I would of liked. I had to clean as there were tea stains on the living room floor and lots of dog hair from the previous guests ( we were dog free) and after I swept up it would have been nice to be able to clean over the floor without leaving it all wet, as a mop and bucket would have(and the one available was not in good order) so a speed mop would be very helpful to clean the wooden floors. I also had to wash the blankets that were on the sofas. I think other guests have used these for their dogs as these were covered in dog hair, not nice to sit on! Weirdly some of the tea towels were covered in dog hair but that is obviously not the property owners fault! I would recommend Briggsy’s butcher for fabulous tasty delights and Jedburgh deli for your cooking needs. We had a trip to Kelso and the local garden centre, there is an amazing fruit and veg shop selling unusual fruits and tasty breads. Definitely worth a visit! All in all a great week away.

Thanks for your feedback. We are taking your suggestions on board and have invested in a special hoover for dog hair and different throws for pet free guests. Best wishes J Hardy Property Owner

Great welcome pack to greet us & accommodation was clean & cosy. There was an issue with a water leak affecting the kitchen floor when we arrived but the local point of contact Mandy was an absolute star & the home owner very quickly got on the case to sort the problem. Used WD40 which we always carry. Better now. Water coming thru floorboards in kitchen at boiler end. Not reassuring. Thought it was us bringing in water but no. The location is good if you want to be in town, the garden is pretty and everything worked. Even the on-street parking turned out to be no problem at all, and there wasn't much street noise at night as we feared there might be. My only niggles are (1) the bathtub is free standing with no curtains or enclosure, so it's impossible to shower in it without getting water on the floor (the downstairs shower is great, however); and (2) instructions for the oven and the heating system would be nice. (Sorry, we're Americans, and the symbols on the oven were Greek to us.) And our third person found one of the twin mattresses too thin. But all in all it was quite satisfactory.

Great position in the town for walks or a wander down to the shops. I only marked the cleanness down cos the fridge in the utility room needed cleaned before I could use it & two of the kitchen drawer handles were sticky but other than that it was spotless. • "We come to Jedburgh regular to visit family, this time was a little sooner than planned due to a bereavement."

The cottage is lovely and well equipped (could do with clothes Airer as nowhere to dry clothes other than on radiators), beds made lovely and helped having bread, milk and biscuits on arrival. The big down side is the cleanliness, like I say the beds made great but it was like that’s where it stopped. There was mess on floors, dirty tissues in bottom of bin, filthy sponge beside a dirty sink, dog paw prints on patio doors and spillage marks down kitchen cupboards. Upstairs bathroom doesn’t lock as it’s broken and the tiles in front porch got very slippy coming in with our snow boots. Maybe I’m picky as I own my own cleaning company but the stand of cleanliness was for sure below par and all the guests said the same as we had to freshen up as we got there. We would stay again due to great layout and where it is etc for family but I would come more prepared to do a freshen up it up before we stayed again.

  • "When we arrived the keysafe wouldn't open."

We called Sykes who weren't able to help as they could only tell us the code - which we already had. Fortunately a neighbour knew where the cleaner lived. In the end I managed to get the safe open with my car key, just as the owner called to make sure we were ok. Castlebrae is generally an attractive, comfortable and well maintained cottage, but our booking in December was marred by the kitchen and dining area being far too cold to sit in. The fully-glazed dining area (which has a very pleasant aspect over an attractive garden) has one radiator, which works, but is not at all adequate to heat the space in cold weather. We had to eat off our knees in the sitting room. This was extremely disappointing as I'd asked Sykes before booking if the cottage was fully warm as we intended to stay in a lot. I'm sure the cold in the dining room wouldn't be a problem in better weather, although we note that other guests have also made the same comment, so there was awareness of the problem. The location of the cottage was incorrect on Sykes website, although I understand this has been addressed. We would recommend Castlebrae for warmer months but until the heating issue has been addressed definitely not for winter months. At the very least there needs to be an extra plug in heater. The cleaner was super helpful and the cottage was spotlessly clean.

It is a very well positioned property, we will definitely stay again and have already recommended it to a few friends and relatives looking to stay in the area.

Perfect in every way. Tv packed up when we were there, it was replaced within a couple of hours. You couldn’t ask for more. The only criticism I have is the gardener coming in when we are not there. If something gets broken or goes missing they are open to accusations. The gardener did come when we were out and didn’t lock the gate at the bottom of the garden. Luckily my wife spotted this before letting the dog out. A very minor criticism but on the whole we had a perfect holiday. Thank you

The heating was difficult to figure out and set on the thermostat and we also had to change the setting on the boiler itself to ‘heat’. The radiator in the kitchen did not work at all so that area was too cold to sit in at night. An improvement would be to have shampoo, soap and basic kitchen condiments available as we forgot to bring oil and pepper. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay very much.
