  • "The property is in a lovely location."

It is very well stocked. However the shark hoover was n where to be found. We ended hand scrubbing carpet to remove ours and legacy dog hairs. The Henry hoover is not fit for purpose. The property appears to need some maintenance eg lights not working dining area and externally. Bedding and towels perfectly clean. The information pack was inadequate. Eg instruction for cooker and other fittings not there. At this point in time is not a 4 star property .

  • "We have just had a week's stay at Ashore and agree with a lot of the comments in other reviews regarding dining chairs, the hoover, lights and the broken back door handle which was an inconvenience although we were able to tie the door open when in the garden with the dogs."

However we still found Ashore to be comfortable and it had everything we needed during our stay. We had an amazing week and enjoyed exploring the local area even the weather was kind. Ashore's proximity to the beach was a real bonus having the dogs and it was also close to local eateries which were dog friendly too.

  • "This isn't a 4 star property, we have many cottage holidays and this property is well below standard."

As mentioned in other reviews there are no bulbs in any of the lights in the area of the dining table. If you put the lights on in the living room area they flicker so are best turned off which leaves you with one single table light for lighting. Again lights at bottom of the stairs don't work so you have to leave the hallway light on so you can see to go to the bathroom. We arrived to find the backdoor handle broken, I went out to the beach not realising this and got locked out. Luckily my husband had stayed behind so I had to ring him to let me in. Thank goodness we both hadn't gone. Therefore backdoor unusable and used front door all week. Kitchen has dirty stained rug and shabby threadbare chairs, empty soap and washing up liquid bottle on the counter. Either offer it or don't, empty bottles are pointless. Bathroom sink in ensuite blocked, almost overflows. Owners must be aware of these issues as earlier reviews comment the same. For the price you pay for a week here their is complete disregard to guest comments otherwise we would not have had these issues. I left a note highlighting most of the above so hopefully guests arriving after us face better. There was a note from the owner asking guests to please vacuum using the shark vacuum. I could only find a red Henry hoover which was broken so I couldn't attach the bits to clean up and had to leave without cleaning. That doesn't sit right with me as I like to leave a property fully cleaned. The location is superb and we've stayed here twice now, its virtually fully booked for next year so I hope the owners take on board the comments and fix it for future guest's. When paying 1k for one weeks holiday you expect better . Its advertised as contemporary when in reality it's tired and broken.

  • "Property is generally tatty and in need of refurbishment."

Bathroom hot tap not stable, dining chairs sank when sat on and settee not much better. No lights above dining table and more importantly main lights constantly flicker. Property not very clean overall, you could see litter on carpet as you walked up the stairs. the exception was the bedding and the towels which were very clean.

  • "Smelly (dogs), dirty and clearly lacking investment from the, frankly, extortionate weekly rental."

Too many things are broken or in need of replacement to be acceptable. Firstly, let me say this property is in a great location, yards from the beach, and is clearly ideal for dog owners, which we are not. That said, there is nothing to recommend this property. First impression seems good. You are hit by the overpowering scent of the air freshener in the hall, intended, I imagine, to confuse your sense of smell, so that once upstairs you do not, initially, notice the smell of dogs. Not until you sit on one of the settees, whereupon you are left in no doubt that previous occupants have allowed their dogs to climb all over them. The settees themselves were covered in a layer of sand, as well as in the channel between the cushions, and clearly had not been vacuumed since the last dog owner had been in occupation. There was also dog hairs over the settees and some other substance, which I don’t want to describe, that had not been cleaned off. The utility room on the ground floor smelt of dogs and from the dog bowls, towels, poo scooper and other dog bits on the work surface is presumably where dog owners are supposed to deal with their dirty dogs. There is a fridge freezer in this room which is presumably meant to store food (on a different floor to the kitchen). There is an old counter top freezer no longer in use just left on the counter. DIRTY, well where to start (apart from the aforementioned settees). There were crumbs, plasters and a used kebab stick on the floor in the kitchen area, plus a used dog bowl under one of the chairs (this should have been removed to the utility room) and the area properly cleaned. My wife tried to vacuum some of the mess but the machine smelt of dogs and made the overall smell worse so this was abandoned. The extractor over the hob was, frankly, disgusting. Both of the filters and the top surface in need of a clean. This meant that we decided not to cook anything on the hob, not wanting to switch it on. As a result we spent a lot of time (and money) eating out which we had not intended to do. The backs of the doors don’t look like they have been cleaned in years. Nor do the skirting boards around the property. The dark brown wood shows up the dust and dirt. The three Velux windows are in desperate need of a good clean on the outside. It is impossible to see out through either one in the kitchen area. Before I get to lack of investment, I would mention that there is no DVD player despite description and photos. There is, however, a small selection of DVDs, if only you could watch them. The TV does not connect to the internet so viewing options are limited to Freeview. Lack of investment, where to start! The bin in the kitchen has a broken lid which looked like it had been broken for some time. Not very hygienic The shower screen in the ensuite is off its runners at the bottom and is, imo, the wrong way around. There are no “grab handles” in the bathroom or the ensuite which could be a problem for anyone taking a shower or with mobility issues. Even without mobility issues it is not easy getting in or out of the en-suite shower which is raised six inches off the floor. Broken Velux window in kitchen that does not close with the result that damp is forming on the frame. Settees that have seen better days (the leather is breaking up). Windows (not just the velux) that don’t open. Lose light switch in the hallway, some might consider this dangerous. Garden furniture on the balcony that is not fit for purpose and needs replacing. There are two new plastic chairs, but this house can accommodate 6 people. The table (which would not accommodate 6 people) is broken and like the wooden chairs has seen better days and desperately needs replacing. It would not be impossible to get a splinter from the broken table surface. The shower screen over bath has lose seal which kept falling off. There are notices warning of “very hot water” but the one on the kitchen does not to tell you that the kitchen taps are the wrong way around (hot on the right not left as it should be). Some of these issues were reported to Northumbria Coastal Cottages, who rung us on the first Monday to check that we were happy (which we were not) and who presumably manage the property for the absentee owner. NOTHING was then done and we heard no more from them. If a cleaner came he/she did NOT vacuum the settees nor were any of the maintenance issues fixed. Finally, there are several NOTES around the property, one of which requests limiting the use of electricity. I would suggest this could be achieved by having a washing line and a working, adequate airer which would negate the need to use the tumble dryer, We have used Sykes many times and have never encountered a property like this. Our experience here will make us think carefully about using them

however there were a couple of points to make - the back door is very hard to close so it can be locked, I struggled and had to get my son to make sure it was locked. The table on the rear upstairs balcony is starting to rot and bits of wood missing with nails sticking up. Kettle is temperamental wether it wants to turn on or not. Paperwork for bin day is for 2023. Paperwork stated Sharke hoover provided for people with pets - however the pet attachment is only very short and you have to bend double to vac. The 2nd attachment, the brushes will not stay down when in use, makes doing the cleaning very hard indeed and just leaves piles - you have to keep taking the pipes apart to vac up. Little things i know, but bits that need attention otherwise we had a lovely time and all enjoyed their stay

Negatives - double bedroom curtains need replacing or hanging properly, light switches don’t all work/dimmer switches don’t dim, need another lamp in living room, strong smell of damp in bathroom, old unplugged fridge still in utility room (was there last year), window & door on to verandah could use a curtain to keep out draughts (gaps in frame), no key for door from utility room into garden (queried with agency but no final answer given) as it would be great to be able to lock it from the outside when going on to the beach. Very comfortable and warm for our Christmas stay. Well equipped kitchen with all easy to use appliances. The welcome drink and doggie biscuits were very much appreciated, and the fact that the seating, with throws, was nicely worn so we didn't have to worry about our dogs curling up with us. The dogs loved it. Very comfy and roomy, comfy sofas and recliner chair, good facilities and great balcony views. It was very cosy and warm even though we stayed in November 2023. The window in one of the bathrooms didn’t shut fully. Loved the back light in the garden so you could see the dogs but worth taking a torch as you couldn’t see them when they ventured round the sides of the garden away from the light and it is very dark. The welcome pack of biscuits and coffee/tea was a nice touch. Am just about to book again for next year but when it’s slightly warmer so we can make full use of those balcony views. Thank you so much for having us and our dogs.

However both the internal and external decoration and upkeep is very disappointing. The property felt damp and uncared for. The external table was damaged, internal chair ripped, two fridges in the kitchen (one in front of the other so one would assume one was broken but not taken away). Freezer down stairs was hand painted to hid the rust. The balcony upstairs patched up and not painted. All in all this property is in need of some vital maintenance and repair. Very disappointing considering the cost of the property for the week ☹️

when you have 3 people and a dog travelling together it is useful to know what you absolutely need to bring. there was no mention of a washing machine and I checked in one of my questions and this was confirmed. on arrival there was a washing machine which meant I could have packed less! on arrival there was a very strong smell of cigarette smoke in the living area. I commented on this when I received an email asking how things were. I then had a phone call apologising and saying this would be raised after the bank holiday but I didn't hear anything further. the whole place felt a little tired and uncared for. much of the kitchen equipment such as utensils and pans had to be washed before we could use them. everywhere was dusty and it really felt like it hadn't been cleaned on the day of our arrival. we reported a fault with the door to the balcony which was resolved the same day. the shower in the en suite was just about ok power wise but the one in the main bathroom was very poor. the location was amazing and the beds v comfy and linen was fresh and clean. I have booked a further holiday with sykes later this year and am hoping we have a better experience.

Double quilt and base sheet on a king sized bed which was interesting. Not enough curtain rings on curtains so they hung with gaps. No switch on bedside lamp so had to put arm down side of unit to switch off. Ensuite shower door did not close, towel rail on ensuite was loose so didn't like to use it. 2 x bulbs on kitchen and dining room lights not working. Toaster does not work so you have to stand holding it down till cooked. DVD player does not work with the tv as the scart does not connect. It's a bit dangerous that if you are outside on the balcony and the wind shuts the door there is no way you can get back in. There is a terrible damp smell in the utility room which was that bad we couldn't leave the door open. We are really good at cleaning up after our dog but didn't expect to come on holiday to find droppings from another dog, this wasn't very nice. The size and location of the property were brilliant but for what we were charged it was disappointing especially when either s little time and effort it could be stunning.

About the location

BEADNELL

Seahouses 1.5 miles; Bamburgh 5 miles.

This attractive and peaceful harbour village is situated beside one of the most beautiful stretches of Northumberland’s Heritage Coastline - Beadnell Bay. Established in Saxon times, Beadnell was once an important fishing village and a smuggler's haven. Nowadays, it is still a fishing village, but is equally popular with holidaymakers who come to enjoy its pretty harbour and, of course, the nearby sandy beaches. The village has a shop, two pubs and a café serving food. Popular Seahouses is just over a mile away and has shops, a supermarket and restaurants, and it also offers boat trips from the harbour to the magnificent Farne Islands - a haven for bird watchers. Bamburgh is close by, whilst the market town of Alnwick with its Castle and Gardens, shops, pubs and restaurants is a short drive away.
