  • "Lovely cosy cottage - modern, clean and equipped with everything you need."

Plenty of parking available and because of the location we never used our car all week. It’s a stones throw from the beach and lots of cafes nearby including the metro only a few minutes walk away. We would definitely return. Thanks for a lovely stay!

  • "Bay cottage is lovely but, it’s not clear that the parking is adjacent to the property."

Which could or was mistaken for parking for other properties. Also the bedroom doors caused a problem. When both doors are shut if you are in the bedroom at the front you are unable to open the bedroom door. This could be a big problem particularly if the person or persons in the back bedroom are not in the property.

  • "Had a wonderful time thank you so much."

However I would point out just one thing the step from the entrance porch into the living room could do with a warning strip, both myself and my husband fell down it a couple of times until we were able to remember that there was a slight step. It was with the floors being so dark it isn’t obvious as a newcomer to the home. Other than that we couldn’t fault it at all and would certainly go again. We were up for a family wedding and had a lovely holiday whilst we were there. The welcome book was very useful thank you again

  • "I’ve shared on Vrbo but the cottage has a great location, comfy beds and the cleaner is great but it lacks basics, Hive heating pad doesn’t work, there’s significant damp in the kitchen and bathroom and the locks are very flimsy."

There is ground in dirt from it needing deep cleaning and redecorating.

Hi Victoria I’m sorry to read your feedback regarding damp, the cottage was redecorated this year but because of heavy rainfall and a small leak we now have it scheduled again in next few months to fix the ‘damp’ you’re referencing. Thanks, Kate Property Owner

Only having one key to the property and no back door key was challenging. Although overall the property was clean there were areas where it was grubby. Surprised that there was no welcome pack. We did have a nice break but the parking issue was a deal breaker for us.

Hi So sorry you had issues with parking. There is allocated parking right infront of the cottage which is for residents only (guests included) so I’m unsure what the parking issue was. We also have a welcome pack which is situated on the coffee table in the cottage with full information regarding your stay and also recommendations for things to do (navy blue folder) can you let me know if you saw this? There are also keys on the shelf at the back door Thanks, Kate Property Owner

Couldn't be better positioned with the sea a moments walk from the front door, Whitley Bay 20 minutes walk in one direction and Tynemouth 20 minutes the other way. The bed was very comfy, the water pressure in the shower was great, a well stocked kitchen with every pan and utensil I could need and I appreciated the fluffy blankets in the living room when settling in for a cosy evening too. Thoroughly recommended for a break by the sea.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We’ve updated the cottage recently adding new pieces of furniture and cosy furnishings and accessories so it’s wonderful to hear it’s been worthwhile for our guests. Thank you Property Owner

  • "Really snug and cosy - we arrived on a chilly January afternoon with snow falling outside, but it was beautifully warm inside Bay Cottage."

We used the log burner too in the evenings, and the squishy sofas and subdued lighting added to a relaxed atmosphere. Comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, everything clean and fresh. Two minor gripes - we couldn't have a hot bath as for some reason the water would run cold half way through filling. Lashings of hot water for the shower, but there seems to be a glitch with the plumbing to the bath taps? The other thing to mention was the steep wooden stairs - we had to be really careful on them as they were quite slippery and could be a problem for someone with limited mobility. We loved the cottage and hope to return - it's near the beach (sea-view from back bedroom) near local shops and cafes, and a 5 minute walk from the metro.

Thank you so much for your feedback and so glad you hope to be back to visit with us again, I will have our maintenance man have a look at the bath taps and get this resolved Property Owner

  • "Enjoyed our stay at Bay Cottage."

Facilities and cleanliness were good, however, as I'm a 'clean freak', there was quite a bit of dust on skirting board by plug and behind sofa. I think one more saucepan would be helpful. One small and one large is not enough, also they were a bit 'tired'. The large baking tray in the oven was quite dirty ..maybe previous people left it like that. We didn't use it. We assumed as there was a log burner that some logs would be provided. A coffee table in lounge would be useful as the little side tables are quite unstable. Another lamp in corner would also help the ambience....Overall we enjoyed our stay and hope you take this as constructive.

Thank you for your feedback. I will feedback to the cleaners and I have gone out today to purchase some additional pans. A statement coffee table is actually in the process of being made for the cottage but in the meantime we have always had side tables for our guests for drinks etc. I do appreciate your feedback so we can make things better for your guests so thank you and I do hope you may visit with us again Property Owner

  • "The cottage was in a great location, the beds were comfy, the living space generous and it was mostly well equipped."

However, the dishwasher wasn’t working and obviously hadn’t been used for a while due to condition inside. There was no information to say it wasn’t so we wasted quite a lot of time trying to get it to work. Couldn’t get through to Sykes and there were no other contact details. Someone arrived on our last day to replace it but said they had been told the cottage would be empty. Also there was no green bin outside for the external rubbish and no way of reporting this. It looked as though previous guests had been using the recycling bin for all rubbish so it was getting really full. We were worried this would not be collected on collection day but luckily it was, perhaps as we had only used it for recycling thereafter. The cottage appeared clean and tidy but we soon realised that there was quite a lot of dust. The bathroom door didn’t shut. Overall we enjoyed our stay but with a bit of attention to maintenance, cleanliness and communication it could have been a lot better.

So sorry you weren’t informed of the dishwasher due to be replaced. This was reported 2 weeks ago and we hoped it could be fixed but after being checked out by a plumber we opted to replace. Sincere apologies you weren’t informed. We will check on the bin, it may be down the back of the street as it’s been known to end up there after a collection. The cottage is thoroughly cleaned for every changeover so I’m sorry if you felt it dusty. The cleaning is checked regularly Property Owner

Comfy beds, well appointed and great location. Fridge wasn’t properly cleaned when we arrived and dishwasher had a fault and wouldn’t work. We called the Sykes contact number several times but kept getting an “ our lines are busy” message that stated our call would be returned. No one called so we did not have a working dishwasher for the whole stay. Disappointing as this was the only downside to the holiday.

  • "We had a lovely stay."

Loved the comfortable double bed and slept so well because the location is very peaceful without traffic noise. The kitchen was well equipped and there is plenty of hot water for showers and baths. The bench outside the cottage gets the last of the sunshine when the other cottages are in shadow. The Coop is very handy and the cottage is also well situated for walks to lots of pubs and restaurants as well as along the beach. The only downside is the loo being downstairs as the stairs are steep and not that easy to see as they are painted black. However, there are movement-activated lights around the cottage that help navigate your journey up and down. We discovered batteries for the TV remote under the sink after we had gone out to buy replacements so maybe this could be in the information pack for future guests. All in all, we had a great time. Thanks very much!

  • "This was a lovely cottage for two and we had a great stay."

the accommodation was comfortable and surprisingly spacious and the kitchen was equipped with all we required for our stay. Beds were very comfortable, the shower was simple to use and all was clean and ready for our arrival. A few things would have made our stay even better: 1) there were no directions sent re parking which is not actually on Simpson St itself and we located it thanks to the help of a neighbour. Directions would have been helpful. 2) the lack of side tables in the lounge area made it difficult to relax with a glass of wine or cup of tea as there was nowhere else to place them but on the floor. 3) some of the instructions in the manual in the cottage were lacking - e.g. there was no detail as to what rubbish or recycling went in which bin; no details re how the thermostat controlling the heating worked. Finally, we discovered when attempting to put the heating on one evening that the thermostat unit's batteries were dead and needed replacing.

Free off road parking, 2 minutes to a bus stop which takes you to Whitley bay or all the way to the metro centre via Newcastle. The metro is also less than 10 mins walk. The cottage was much larger than we thought, well appointed with nice cosy sofas and a log burner, it also has central heating which was great as it was very cold when we stayed. The bedding and towels were also of a high quality and we had a great nights sleep throughout our stay. The photos don’t do it justice, it’s lovely inside and out.

It is well equipped, nicely decorated and deceptively spacious as it looks tiny from outside. The appliances are all easy to use and it’s lovely having a dishwasher while on holiday although a little more crockery would be useful and reduce the frequency of dishwasher use. We look forward to a return visit.

  • "This was a lovely cottage and the facilities in the main were very good."

The downstairs living area was superb but I would have to say that the stairs were somewhat steep and slippery. Having a downstairs bathroom is a downside but to be expected. Some constructive criticism - the bathroom was a little cramped and had an unpleasant musty smell about it. What I really didn't like was the bathroom door which had been sawn in two and re-joined in the middle to make it fold. This needed some mechanism to stop you getting caught in the fold when closing the door. A possible solution would be a piano hinge and a full length hinge finger guard.

  • "Having stayed in a similar property on this road in the past which was very good, we were somewhat disappointed by the experience in Bay Cottage for a number of reasons: • very sparsely equipped in the kitchen - only one item of crockery per person of most things and only 3 mugs for a cottage that sleeps 4 in theory."

This made it impossible to ever consider using the dishwasher which we didn’t. •No teapot. •Lack of bins in the bedrooms. •No side table on one side of the bed in master bedroom. • Lack of useful drawers in master bedroom. •Only 2 full sized coat hangers in master bedroom - the rest being a few that would have even been too small for children’s clothes. •Only one pillow on each of single beds. •Quality of bedding was extremely inferior. •Fire and safety issue - When the master bedroom door was closed, we realised that you couldn’t open the door of the 2nd bedroom and the person was trapped inside! • Bathroom door - didn’t shut properly/ very awkward to use / I trapped my arm in the folding door join causing a long and deep blood blister. •No coffee or side tables at all - had to use our own camping table. • Hand held vacuum cleaner didn’t have the nozzles. • Only a brush and dustpan provided - a long - handled brush would have been useful. •Two irons but no ironing board! We feel that the facilities provided did not match the price we were paying for the cottage.

Minutes’ walk from the local beaches and local amenities. 5 minute walk to the Metro station which is ideal if you planning a trip to Newcastle and other areas. The cottage downstairs is spacious and ideal for couples. The only problem is the front door does not open or lock from the inside which is an issue getting to and from the car etc this needs to be resolved (we are a bit disappointed as a previous review had already highlighted this problem) not sure how the door issue would stand with health and safety of the property. the multi fuel burner is very cosy I would suggest some tools to help with the fire (tongs etc) The upstairs main bedroom is a good size with plenty of space to store your clothes, the bed is a good size and comfortable however the damp patch on the ceiling is not a nice thing to wake up to also you just need to remember the low ceiling if you wake up in the night. the second bedroom with two single beds is cosy. The kitchen is clean and narrow and as most of the implements you would require to cook although it does lack a corkscrew and bottle opener, the damage to the ceiling could do with some repair. The toilet and bath/shower room are at the end of the kitchen it is clean and cosy, however the water temperature is tepid at best not ideal a very quick shower is best. Overall, the cottage is great.

About the location

CULLERCOATS

Tynemouth 1.9 miles; Whitley Bay 1.1 miles; North Shields 2.8 miles; Newcastle-upon-Tyne 9.8 miles

Perched between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay on the North East coast is the urbanised area of Cullercoats. Founded in 1539, the village depended heavily on fishing to support its economy, as well as a local coal mining pit, which was used to fire salt pans to export salt and coal from Cullercoats port. The village is home to unique architecture, including the preserved fishermen's cottages resting a long Simpson Street and Victorian terraces can be found besides the coast. In 1862, Edward Corvan wrote a popular song about the area, titled "The Cullercoats Fish Lass" and American artist, Winslow Home, belonged to the "Cullercoats Colony". In present day, Cullercoats is an idyllic destination for families, due to its long, sandy beach, where you enjoy a dip in the water and a promenade with arcades. Cullercoats offers a plethora of delicious eateries, with its specialty being traditional fish and chips. The village is located just one mine away from both Tynemouth and Whitley Bay.
