Really quiet area with only the noise from pheasants and owls. The cottage is well over 150 years old but has been modernized with lounge/kitchen open plan, washer dryer and dishwasher and oven and hob what more could you want, upstairs two large bedrooms one ensuite one family with large bath. The grounds are really nice and the two giraffe statues are cool. There are loads of walks all around for you and your four legged friend. You really feel your in the middle of nowhere but only a short drive from restaurants and shops. If we're ever back in this area again we'll definitely be booking again.

  • "The bedrooms had a number of cobwebs around the ceiling and the bed linen was stained yellow."

I attempted to hoover the cobwebs myself to find the hoover smelt quite bad, it turned out the bag was completely full despite there being new bags in the cupboard. I changed the bag myself. There was dirt and dog hairs under the furniture downstairs so this had not been hoovered before we arrived, There was black mould in the en-suite shower which needed cleaning, I would suggest this had been there for a while given the amount showing. The hot tap in the en-suite has a sticky valve and therefore occasionally water does not appear when you open the tap. This should not detract from the location which is beautiful. Lots of nice walks in the immediate area and the main towns, Kelso and Berwick are easily accessible. I would recommend the property on this basis, however, the cleaning standards do need to improve.

It was clean and warm although upstairs was a bit cold as the bedroom wall heater was still broken. We took a fan heater with us anyway which helped to warm the room (there were also some in the cupboard to use). After about 5 minutes it warmed the room up and fortunately it wasn’t too cold weather wise. The cottage is handy for Berwick and getting into the A1 which was about a 10 minute drive away and it was about an hour to Edinburgh. We enjoyed our stay at Gardeners Cottage and it suited our purpose which was visiting family locally.

I went to put the lamp on in the living room on the first evening and there was dust and a spider on it. I was looking for something I had lost & there was dust under the couches and wrapping paper or something under one of the single beds(didn't check what it was). Would have preferred a double bed rather than 2 single beds pushed together. There was a problem with water coming down into the kitchen from the main bathroom but we did let the owners know & they came & sorted it straight away so no problem there. I would say if there is any problems at any properties let the owners know so they can deal with it otherwise how would they know something is wrong. After all the negatives it is a lovely cottage in peaceful surroundings, you do need a car as not much shops etc in the area but I would still recommend it & appreciated the tea, coffee sugar and cakes.

The property what basic and done what we needed it to in regards to resting your head, eating and showering etc. The area where the cottage is was actually fab and could be such a managet. However the property needs some serious TLC and some basic cleaning like getting rid of cob webs up walls and stains on the carpets up stairs. The beds came across clean but when we initially walked in you could smell damp or almost a wet dog smell, opening the windows and getting some candles done the job. Looking at it and the price we paid reflected maybe why it was just over £300 but I wouldn't have paid any more. All that to one side there was tea, coffee, milk and some snacks which was appreciated! Especially after a long journey. We found the location gave us opportunities to go to many places.

  • "This is a really nice little semi-detached cottage with an open-plan downstairs and two good sized bedrooms upstairs."

It's very comfortable and clean, and my only niggles were that given that we were there in early March, the bedroom heaters no longer work and the bathroom heater comes on for about a minute then overheats, cuts out, and won't come on again (or at least not in the time it takes to have a shower). If you are there in the summer months that probably isn't something you'd worry about, but we had a few frosty nights when it would have been good to take the chill off the bedroom a bit, though it wasn't actually cold up there. But the biggest put-off to returning for us was the insistence on leaving by 9am. Everywhere else we've been (even during Covid) has had the more reasonable exit of 10am, and while it might be little difference to some, for me trying to get my 80-year-old husband out that much earlier was enough to have us leaving the day before the end of our week, just to have that bit more time to sort ourselves out in. In terms of location the cottage is well-placed to both get up to places like Edinburgh and down to the lovely Northumberland coast, which was ideal for what we wanted.

Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear that the heating in the bedroom and the bathroom were unsatisfactory for you. They are both on timers that perhaps needed adjustment? I’m sorry you didn’t let us know about this or your difficulties with our check out time, we would have certainly have dealt with both issues. We would love to welcome you back another time and do our best to iron out any difficulties Kind regards Liz Property Owner

Came back for a second stay. Very relaxing. Chocolates were lovely. Compared to last time, the cottage was not quite as clean. But still loved it. We would highly recommend, to anyone, to stay at The Gardeners Cottage.

Not that child friendly especially if into gadgets as WiFi quite poor and a very small tv in the sitting room but overall the cottage is set in lovely surroundings and pet friendly.

  • "This cottage was in beautiful surroundings."

The owner was very pleasant and welcomed us as soon as we arrived. It was located quite near the border so were able to visit places in England easily too. Would definitely recommend Gardiners cottage especially if you have dogs too as plenty of grounds for them to run about.

It is so cosy and well-equipped, with tasteful decor, and situated in lovely woodland grounds. It's brilliant having 2 bathrooms. Thoroughly enjoyable holiday, wouldn't hesitate to go again

  • "A very pleasant and comfortable cottage in a beautiful area."

It has an enclosed front area safe for children and pets. Very obliging caretakers who are close by should you need them. We had no problems with the phone signal but the wifi was rather slow but usable. There are plenty of supermarkets in the area if you need a large choice of items, we found Berwick-upon-Tweed was the nearest with a choice of different supermarkets, there are of course shops in Chirnside too. Nice and quiet but perfectly situated for touring around the area.

So refreshing. Very good for dogs. Signs on the country roads were not the best, but the directions we had been given and Google Maps were invaluable. A wonderful time was had by all.

  • "The cottage was very central for a great deal of attractions."

It had everything we needed for our holiday. The beds were very comfortable. It was very warm and cosy. Even though it was semi-detached we did not hear anything from the people next door. It was so peaceful when we came back from our trips out. Just what we needed. I would highly recommend this cottage.

Easy to get about to East Lothian or back to Northumberland coast. Cottage very comfortable particularly the upstairs. For dog walking couldn't be better. Good eating roundabout, our favourite was Allanton Inn.

About the location

CHIRNSIDE

Duns 6 miles; Berwick-upon-Tweed 9 miles.

The village of Chirnside occupies an elevated position overlooking the River Whiteadder and offers stunning views across the magnificent Cheviot and Lammermuir Hills. A number of interesting landmarks depict the village's long history, including a 16th Century dovecot and a beautiful parish church, believed to date back to the 12th Century. Each summer, the Jim Clark Rally, the only 'closed roads' race on mainland Britain, takes place in and around the Borders as a memorial to the village’s home born champion. Just 9 miles away lies the charming, coastal town of Berwick, boasting quaint, narrow streets enclosed within Elizabethan walls, excellent shopping and dining facilities and an interesting arts centre. The local area affords fantastic fishing, golf, walking and riding opportunities and the nearby resorts of Eyemouth, Coldingham and Spittal offer soft, sandy beaches, ideal for a relaxing afternoon. A brilliant location for exploring historic Edinburgh, the stunning Northumberland coastline, and the attractions of Holy Island, Paxton House, Manderson, Bamburgh and Alnwick Castle. Chirnside is a great holiday location all year round.
