  • "Nice little cottage for one or two."

Good location - New Mills has a good arty vibe about it. Perfect for long canal and woodland walks. The wood burner is a treat. The only downside was the connectivity: Freeview TV is janky during bad weather, and the WiFi is not a secured network. I would (and quite probably will) book again.

So many good places straight from the door to eat, drink and walk that we did not use the car once all week! Many thanks.

  • "Fabulous property ideally situated for seeing the local area and walking and with the train stations only 2 and 10 mins away it gave us direct access to Buxton and Edale without needing the car."

This is a small property and it states it's for 4 people. There's a double bed upstairs on the mezzanine floor and a sofa bed downstairs - think this would be very cosy for any period of time. However, it was just the 2 of us and our small dog so great. Well kitted out kitchen with everything you need. Laundry facilities next to the marina office for a small fee. Starter kit included for the fire and you can purchase more fuel and logs from the marina office. Few minor points. The first is that the lighting in the living / dining area is provided by lamps. Lovely and cosy, but restricted if you're doing jigsaws etc (as we were!). Secondly the upstairs area gets very hot so if you're like us and prefer to sleep in a cold room, we ended up throwing the windows wide open when we went to bed. And finally the Wi-Fi speed is adequate but limited. Didn't bother us at all but might others!! Would definitely recommend - we didn't want to come home!

  • "Lovely little property."

Spotlessly clean and with everything we needed. Staff very friendly and helpful. Only observations would be that care needs to be taken in the mezzanine bedroom as the roof slant is very low and head space around one side of the bed is very limited. Also, it might be useful to have a lock on the bathroom door. It was absolutely fine for us but if 2 couples were staying it might be more awkward. Overall a lovely stay in a lovely spot.

The property

The Hay Barn is an inviting cottage set just paces from the canal within the New Mills Marina, Derbyshire.

Upon arrival you are greeted with a designated parking space for one car, but due to this central location in the town, you’ll hardly need the car all week!

Step into the open-plan living space and take over the kitchen, preparing a delicious meal before retreating to the sofa and spending some downtime beside the woodburning stove.

Freshen up in the ground-floor shower room before heading upstairs to the mezzanine bedroom.

To the outside is a small patio space housing a picnic bench, where you can enjoy your morning coffee before heading into the town centre.

Well-placed for accessing the delights of New Mills, Hayfield and the Peak District, The Hay Barn is a great escape for couples.

Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1126269, together sleeping up to 14 guests.

New Mills Marina Cottages

Set within a gated development in the New Mills Marina, just 30 yards from the canal, are these two delightful cottages. Perfect for couples and families, these New Mills cottages can accommodate a total of fourteen guests and their canine companions. Both holiday cottages come with open-plan living areas housing fully-fitted kitchens, traditional furnishings, woodburning stoves and dining areas. To the outside rest two private patio areas with picnic benches and there is off-road parking for one of the cottages. Within a moment’s stroll is the Torrside Brewery where you can sample a beer and cheese tasting evening, while across the canal lies the Swizzels Matlow Factory, a must visit for those sweet lovers! Take a break from the kitchen and dine at a local pub or restaurant; one recommendation is the fabulous A Tavola Gastronomia Siciliana. For attractions, you'll be spoilt for choice with The Torrs Riverside Park, New Mills Golf Club, a fishing club close by and the National Trust's impressive Lyme, a country estate featured in the Pride and Prejudice series! A short car journey will bring you to Buxton, where you’ll find the Buxton Opera House, Museum & Art Gallery, and the underground caves of Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park bursting with local heritage. Choose New Mills Marina Cottages for a refreshing retreat to Derbyshire.

NEW MILLS

Hayfield 2.5 miles; Buxton 11 miles; Castleton 11.5 miles

New Mills is a small town situated on the borders of North West Derbyshire and Cheshire, forming part of the Derbyshire Peak District. Dating back to the 13th century, the late 20th century saw the Torrs Riverside Park (‘the park under the town’) come into being a place for recreation and relaxation, along with the New Mills Heritage Centre, opened to promote tourism in the area. The Torrs Millennium Walkway, a much-admired bridge, is set deep in the gorge and attracts many visitors, while Chapel en le Frith, the Capital of the Peaks, is only 5 miles away, boasting a cobbled market place and historic old stocks. Within easy driving distance is the delightful spa town of Buxton, famous not only for its therapeutic spring water, but also for its Pavillion Gardens and splendid Victorian Opera House, which boasts a variety of shows, attracting people from all over the world. Within easy driving distance are the Blue John show caves at Castleton and many stately homes such as Chatsworth House and Lyme Hall.
