"We have lived in a 400 yr old thatched cottage and have stayed in many old properties."
We have never had to deal with so many very low doorways, there were at least two doorways under 5ft. My husband bashed his head so many times, taking chunks of skin off. The place was a bit grubby. Kitchen equipment was minimal and the oven, an electric aga was confusing and difficult to use.
Thank you for your feedback. Puddled Duck dates to 1563 and remains a genuine Tudor cottage. Two original low doorways are part of its heritage; all others meet modern standards. As a Grade II listed property, these features cannot be altered and are clearly noted in our listing. Many guests choose Puddled Duck for its authentic character, including oak beams and sandstone walls. While these materials can create some dust, all soft furnishings have been replaced within the last year. If you prefer fully modern accommodation, a 16th-century cottage may not be suitable. The cooker is an AGA range cooker, chosen to suit the property’s character. We also encourage guests to enjoy Cheshire’s excellent local pubs and restaurants. We were disappointed by your comments on cleanliness, as the cottage is professionally prepared and regularly praised. While we were also disappointed with how the property was left, we understand expectations vary. Puddled Duck offers a rare chance to experience historic charm rather than modern convenience. We wish you well in finding accommodation better suited to your needs. Puddled Duck Holidays Property Owner

"First and foremost the house is stunning."
Cute thatched cottage in the countryside with a lovely balcony - as listed. Once we got in we noticed there were dog bowls and some dog treats left out which was a lovely touch. Then on the info sheets we were told to feel free to use the dishwasher and washing machine and despite the info sheets stating there were tablets for both, there were none anywhere. There was only one tea towel which had seen better days and the cookware (for being a self-catering holiday) was shockingly old and battered, including the utensils. This led to us not being able to cook as much as we would have liked and the pubs in the area aren't cheap. Cleanliness wise, I know that it's an old-style cottage but it would have been good to get rid of all the spider webs that had definitely been there a while. There was no hand soap in either bathroom so we had to buy our own as well as an additional tea towel. I would advise anyone over 6ft tall to not book here as my husband had to crouch to take a shower and could barely stand straight - but that is in the listing so not complaining. Overall a gorgeous property but let down by the small touches.
Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you found the cottage stunning and enjoyed its character, countryside setting, and balcony. We are, however, sorry that certain aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. Regarding the dishwasher and washing machine tablets, as well as the hand soap, we were very surprised by your comments, as we had personally checked prior to your arrival that these items were provided. The dishwasher and washing machine tablets were located in the cupboard door beneath the Belfast sink, and hand soap was placed in both the bathroom and shower room. Had we been made aware of any difficulties locating these items during your stay, we would have been more than happy to assist. With respect to the tea towels, these are only one month old and were purchased recently. Likewise, the cooking utensils and cookware are approximately six months old and are listed within the inventory provided on the Sykes website. As for the cobwebs, while we always aim to maintain high standards of cleanliness, the cottage is a Grade II listed Tudor property dating back to 1563. Given the age and nature of the building, occasional spider webs can unfortunately appear despite regular cleaning. Finally, Cheshire is a beautiful county with many excellent restaurants, pubs, and attractions. Unfortunately, the popularity and quality of these establishments can mean that prices are slightly higher than in some other areas. We apologise that this did not meet your expectations. We are sorry that your stay did not fully meet your expectations and appreciate your feedback, which helps us continue to improve the guest experience. Kind regards, Puddled Duck Holidays Property Owner

"We had a nice stay at the cottage, it’s very pretty inside and out and has character."
If I had to nitpick I’d say that it’s on a fairly busy lane and the speed limit is 60 so it was difficult to get out of the property safely because the visibility was restricted by bushes and you can’t see in either direction until you’re already halfway in the road - the bushes could be trimmed down to provide a sight line down the land or put a mirror in the bush opposite. The owners had left a lovely welcome basket and provided dog bowls and poo bags which was nice. My only other comment would be that maybe a couple of garden chairs would be nice as although there is a large dining bench, it’s not ideal for ‘lounging’

"Need more kitchen utensils, shower was good but only for small people."
Shower room sink was not very practical. However location was lovely and peaceful.

"Lovely cottage, really comfortable."
Our only reservations, being both over 80, was the stairs and the gate. But there is plenty to do in the area.

"A lovely cottage in a very quiet location."
It is very quirky which is what drew us to booking in the first place but it does come with a few challenges such as low doors and beams but you soon learn to duck. The beds were very comfortable and the living room (the snug) was lovely to relax in on an evening. We were very close to some lovely walks along the Sandstone trail and to Chester. Had a very enjoyable stay and appreciated the welcome basket on our arrival.

"Wow! what a stunning property."
Opening the front door is like stepping into another world! Its quirkiness is so fascinating. Excellent maintenance and good facilities. Plenty or car parking and a pleasant little garden. Safe for dogs. We visited in November, the balcony area would be an amazing experience in the summer. A great place for exploring Chester and The Wirral. Unfortunately, we left a couple of child things behind and the owners are sending them on to us, for which we are extremely grateful. Thank you for an amazing experience, we would certainly return.
Thankyou for your lovely review and we are so pleased you enjoyed the cottage, I hope you got your little ones teddy in the post ok :-) Property Owner

"First things first, the cottage is stunning and in a very picturesque location."
That's pretty much where the good parts end!! Before we even arrived at the cottage we were made aware, from other reviews, that there was a problem with the fridge freezer which we contacted the owners directly about. We were told that it was fine and could be sealed with masking tape that they were happy to supply, how gracious! We were also told that they would supply a smaller fridge to help, which they didn't. If you are over 6ft tall avoid this cottage at all costs as you will be continually stooping and it would be impossible for you to have a shower for the entirety of your stay as the roof is very low in the shower room. This coupled with the shower tray overflowing after a couple of minutes makes the whole experience stressful anyway. The sink in the shower room and the main bathroom are very pretty but absolutely not fit for purpose, more water ends up all over the surface, and neither have a plug. Now we get to the main crux of the property, There is building work being carried out by the owners on their adjoining land approx 10 meters from the rear of the cottage. The noise accompanied by not being able to secure the gate at the front of the cottage while the builders were there meaning we had to keep our dog in the whole time was the final straw. We decided to leave two days early and informed the owners of the problems and our decision to leave. Their response was to lie that they weren't carrying out the building work and were unsure who it was. We have since learned that the land being built on is owned by the same people who own the cottage! They graciously gave us a 'Good Will' refund of £101 for our ruined holiday which is an insult really. None of the problems in other reviews have been addressed and I'm sure they won't be. Book this cottage at you peril!!!
Thank you for your review. We contacted you before your arrival to make you aware of the issue with the fridge freezer, to which you replied, “As long as I can have a couple of beers when I arrive, I’m fine.” We appreciated your understanding at the time. Regarding the ceiling heights, Puddled Duck is a Grade II listed cottage dating back to 1583. Its historic character is one of the reasons many guests choose to stay, and features such as lower ceilings are part of that heritage. As for the remainder of your comments, we don’t feel it is productive to respond point by point. We can only assume there may have been another reason behind your decision to leave early. Nevertheless, we wish you all the best and thank you for your feedback. Property Owner

"Such a lovely unique cottage, in a great location to explore Cheshire."
The cottage has been renovated to a high standard. There is an issue with the fridge / freezer which i reported to the owners, so hopefully this is sorted for future guests. The kitchen equipment i found quite limited compared to other properties I have stayed in, with the addition of an oven tray, Sieve and better frying pan it would make a big difference. Overall it's a great place, would highly recommend it to friends and would stay again
Hi Nicola Thank you so much for your review and feedback and I apologise our response has taken a couple of weeks, this is a new system to us. The fridge freezer is now sorted, it just needed a new seal but thankyou for letting us know We have also added a couple of oven trays and utensils for future guests. Thankyou again for your positive feedback and we are really pleased to hear that you enjoyed the cottage and area :-) And of course great to hear that you would recommend the cottage and friends and would stay again ! "Absolutely stunning cottage ."
Beds were extremely comfortable. Fridge and freezer not the best . Seal had gone on fridge and freezer box doesn't close . No baking trays to use the oven . So I wouldn't recommend taking food with you . Amazing welcome basket on our arrival and lots of info to read . Couldn't leave the dogs alone outside as not secure ( could easily climb through the gate ) Road outside cottage reasonably quiet but cars travel at very high speed so be aware . Stunning living room at night with the fire and plenty of candles around . Very relaxing Downstairs shower room very handy although be careful with the sink .. it's stunning but not very practical... shower tray starts to overflow if you are in shower for longer than a few minutes. Overall a gorgeous place to stay and a great base for exploring Cheshire etc
Hi Helen Thankyou for your review and feedback, we really appreciate it The freezer / ice box in the fridge has now been resolved (it had some ice preventing it closing well) and the fridge has a new seal so I am sorry this did not work as well as it could have done for your stay but hopefully will work well for future guests and if you ever return. We have also taken on board yours and other guests feedback regarding oven trays and utensils so more of these have been added to now The property is fenced at the back but the front garden does have a 5 bar gate with gaps as you say so for small dogs they would need watching, however, we aim to be very dog friendly, having 3 large dogs ourselves and will be adding fencing to the back of the 5 bar gate this weekend. Thankyou again for your feedback and review, it helps us to resolve any minor additions we can make to the cottage. I am pleased you liked the cottage and and area and found it relaxing and would love to welcome you back if you are ever in the area again ! Kind Regards Lindsey Property Owner
