  • "The setting was lovely and the house comfortable enough but there were a few things that let it down badly but could easily be rectified."

    1. The beds were not the size described which made for a not so comfortable stay for some, the king size bed listed is not King size and the one in the third bedroom on the first floor by the bathroom is not a standard double but a small double which is not big enough for 2 adults and the mattress is shocking! 2. The shower room has a shower that floods 3. The grounds are not secure as you would expect for somewhere that is dog friendly. 4. There was horrible rubbish on the lawn which was not only dangerous to our dog but to the abundant wildlife there. The first day the dog picked up a large lump of plastic which was obviously part of a meat packaging and this was in the middle of the lawn near the hot tub and I was lucky to have seen her do it and been able to prize it from her mouth or we would without a doubt have ended up in the vets with a very sick animal and huge bill. When I followed the dog I found the source - a large bonfire site at one end of the garden by the pond, strewn with half burned nappies, bread products, bones, plastic meat and fish containers, veg, black bin bags etc etc, it was disgusting and a health hazard for animals and small children and quite shocking in such a beautiful setting. We filled 2 large bags of the detritus in order to keep my dog, other animals and children safe not something you would expect to find anywhere. There was also another black sack full of rubbish left all weekend by one of the entry gates which a wild animal has obviously attacked, can't understand it! 5, There wasn't an adequate number of plates for 10 people and serving dishes, knives were blunt and one of the ovens didn't work. That said there were lovely scones and a few basics left to start you off and basic household items left for arrival which was a great touch and made life so much easier. Lovely setting and house, just needs a few tweaks and finishing touches and it would live up to the blurb and photos.

We have a few issues with your review Sarah which are as follows:- 1. Bed sizes, there are in fact 2 king size beds both measuring 5ft wide. There is also 2 double beds measuring 4ft 6” wide which is a standard double and a twin room. 2. We ran the shower for 5-10 minutes and the water was draining away without any difficulty. 3. The grounds of 7 plus acres are not fully secure all the way around the perimeter but there is a large enclosed patio area at the back of the property to keep children and dogs safe and secure. 4. As for the rubbish we are amending the way it is disposed of but we are fortunate enough to live in an area where we can have bonfires so that it doesn’t go to landfill. 5. There are plenty of plates, serving dishes etc to serve 10 guests. If the guests feel that the knives are not sharp enough there is a child friendly knife sharpener in the kitchen drawer. The integrated microwave is out of order with a note inside but there is a larger free standing microwave to the side of it on the kitchen worktop. We do feel that most of your issues were unfounded and if you had spoken to David (who you saw on several occasions around the property) then all of the issues would have been gone through and dealt with at the time. We must say that in 3 years plus of letting the property out we have had excellent reviews. Kind regards David Property Owner

I thought the the televisions could do with updating & made more user friendly could only get terrestrial tv on one of the tvs in the lounge & couldn’t get the tv to work at all in the kitchen diner. A lot of ground work going on in the garden but the owner explained what the issues were & was very friendly without being obtrusive. Facilities were great from the hot tub to the snooker room & play area for the children. Would stay again.

Thanks for your comments Richard. We will look into the issue regarding the TV’s.Hopefully the area affected by the drainage problems should improve rapidly over the next few weeks.Because of the age and layout of the farmhouse(dating back to the late 1700’s)en suite bedrooms are not a practical proposition.Kind regards David. It’s a great venue for a family gathering or celebration. The full size snooker table and the hot tub are particularly good features. The grounds are vast with a good safe play area for children. The house is warm and spacious with the emphasis on comfort and practicality more than aesthetics. Our stay was for a 70th birthday and family reunion. The weather wasn’t good but the house was so big and well equipped that everyone had such a special time without heading out as much as we would do normally. We’d highly recommend MIll Farm for get togethers. It has a happy and informal vibe. David, the owner, was an excellent host. He was always available for help and advice but in no way intrusive. Location was perfect and Dave the owner was a wonderful host. The play area was perfect for the kids and the large gardens was perfect for the dogs. With three generations and ages from 78 to 6 there was something for everyone. The house was lovely, the kitchen was a perfect meeting point for everyone including the dogs. The house had great character, clean on arrival, and all the needed cleaning materials to keep it that way throughout the week. Virgin tv throughout so everyone happy with kids programmes through to the football! Great pubs near by and great take always. I have nothing negative, and again the owner Dave just added to the experience, if you book take the time to say hi he will make your stay even better!

There were 7 of us staying and all felt that we had our own space as the house is very spacious. We have a 5 year old in our party and she did not stop the whole week as there was so much for her to see and enjoy. The park with zipline was so much fun. Would love to return at another time.

We spent a lot of time in the garden playing catch and cricket/rounders.The hot tub was an awesome big plus for both the adults and kids… we ended up staying in more than we planned to as so much to do in the place. With a 6 year old, 10 year old and 14 year old and a grandma with us the big perk was the playground area / garden. Gardens are huge… can go for lovely walks. All secluded and felt safe with kids playing outside. It has a zipline (which was a big hit), trampoline, 4 swings and seesaw etc. Also has a snooker table, lots of games/books. The grounds are huge and great for walks - there is also a public footpath in front of the house fence taking you behind Repton school for a longer walk. We went fruit picking in Scaddows Farm nearby - which was a lovely place with delicious fruit to pick. Kitchen has everything you need equipment wise. Advice to anyone going is 1) do not put the postcode in satnav - as it took us to two different/wrong places in Repton. Type in Milton Derbyshire instead, which took us to the correct Main St in Milton - after no 29 Main st is a red phone box / turn left directly after. 2) take a hair dryer if you need one (but it has everything else iron/ironing board etc).

They were great with the dogs too. There’s everything you need in the lovely kitchen and the house is spotlessly clean everywhere. Games room and hot tub made a great way to finish our day. We actually were very sad to leave. The swan in the village is very good and friendly as are the pubs in nearby Repton. We will definitely return and highly recommend. It was a dream cottage for us, probably the best we’ve stayed in. A house that was spacious, comfortable and well equipped, and huge beautiful gardens that offered all kinds of pleasures. It’s the kind of place you don’t really need to leave at all to have a lovely stay. The kids loved the play equipment and the hot tub, and we had a great time using all the grounds to play garden games, eat al fresco and relax in the hot tub. The peaceful setting was also a good environment for a variety of wildlife - we spotted deer, woodpecker, swallows and there is even a peacock that visits. Indoors, the snooker table was a big bonus and there are so many books and games provided as well as three tvs! On arrival we found a welcome pack of scones and some thoughtful provisions of milk/bread etc. The website should definitely mention the large fridge freezer and the garden games and BBQ being available as well. Last but not least, Dave is a fabulous welcoming owner and was very helpful. Overall, Mill Farm Farmhouse is a brilliant quality cottage accommodation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and only wished we’d booked for longer. I have a feeling we will be booking again! Thank you to Dave and his friendly helpers.

  • "We have 2 or 3 family holidays in cottages every year and Mill Farm -The Farmhouse ranks as one of the best we have rented."

The garden, it is misleading to call it a garden, it is huge more like a park. It has swings, a trampoline and a zipwire and acres of space for croquet, boules. and all the ball games. You can relax in the summerhouse overlooking the sizeable pond watching the bees and insects visiting the many flowers around the edge. Then there is the house scrupulously clean with two large lounge/dining rooms, a large well equipped kitchen ,huge billiard room from which you can access the hot tub. I could go on and on. We are a family of eight, my wife , three daughters , one spouse , two grandsons (12 & 9) and two dogs. Plenty of footpaths in the area to walk the dogs. Choice of restaurants/pubs for food within walking distance, we visited The Boot , The Swan and Jaipur (Indian). My wife likes to create a theme for these holidays (this is our seventh year) The Farmhouse and garden was ideal for our Jubilee Celebrations. David (Owner) a real gent made sure the garden was pristine for our garden party and the barbecue was fully prepared and full gas bottle. My wife refuses to rent a cottage a second time but surprised us when she declared The Farmhouse "might be the exception" .

The house itself is beautiful with large comfortable rooms and plenty of space for everyone to find a place to relax. The garden is stunning (the photos do not do it justice). We didn’t need to go anywhere else. Perfect for Easter egg hunts and even a bit of snow didn’t stop us playing croquet! Worth noting that we were all adults and the property could be hard work with young children. The garden has water features, steps and slopes, and is extensive so children would need to be accompanied. It is great fun though with little bridges and places to explore. There are also several stairs and uneven floors within the property to get down to the kitchen, snooker room and sitting room. Our elderly family members found these hard work. The only thing the owners could add to improve this property, is to upgrade the cutlery and tablewares. It is a great kitchen space with a generous dining room for cooking a celebration meal, so it was a shame to eat from very cheap, small cutlery and have no serving dishes or spoons for the table. We were also missing basics such as a sieve to drain the rice. Overall, with the bonus of the hot tub and a top quality snooker room, the house was wonderful!
