  • "The property is in a great location – for our winter holiday we were looking for somewhere where we can walk everywhere to (shops, station etc)."

So this property is perfect for that. We also visited the Majestic Theatre which you can see from the window! However, having rented many holiday homes over the years, this has to be by far the least loved and unwelcome (and dirtiest!) one of all. It doesn’t seem up to the standards of Sykes Cottages. On arrival we usually find a welcome note or even a loaf of bread, mild, teabags etc. But there was nothing suggesting that guests were coming. The information pack was three pages of orders but no useful information whatsoever – for example: further instructions on the gates/codes, the alarm, how the appliances work, television, hot/cold water, heating, things to do in the area, doctors, pharmacy etc.) On Sunday night we had to take the bin out, but no one else did (we were waiting for the rest of the street since there was no schedule in the property to tell us which bin). In the end we had to find the information online because the schedule changed due to the holidays – both bins were overflowing and hadn’t been emptied in a while. The property wasn’t clean when we arrived. There was unflushed urine in the downstairs toilet, mold in the coffeemaker and in the laundry room there was a plastic bag of used sanitary pads and some balled up dirty sheets and towels(?). These last items we found on our last day because we had asked if we could check out a bit later and we could if we left the property as clean as possible – we got rid of all the cobwebs mentioned in earlier reviews! The property also isn’t very well equipped. Lacks some basic kitchen utensils like a ladle, a cafetiere/coffee filter, no spare bin bags. There is no broom, a squeegee to clean the shower screen, a bathmat. No cupboard or storage space to unpack your suitcase. One of the lamps downstairs didn’t have a lightbulb (we didn’t use the lamp) but there were no spare light fittings anywhere in the property to replace this if wanted to. And the wooden panel below the dishwasher keeps falling out every time you open the dishwasher. We didn’t mention these issues to the owner at the time of stay because at that point there is nothing you can do about these things and we are after all, on holiday. I think the property needs to be checked more often and between guests I would recommend a professional cleaner. I have seen on other review sites that the same things have been said before, so hopefully the owners can look into this to make this property feel more loved and welcoming. Like I said, the location is great and especially in winter time it’s nice to have your living space on the top floor with an open plan kitchen, dining- and living room so you can all be together. We did have a lovely holiday, however, we would have preferred it without doing so much cleaning!

  • "I stayed here with two teenage sons."

It is within close proximity of lots of shops, supermarkets and restaurants/ cafes. It’s also a short walk to the train station and to the bus station. The accommodation was very homely and lovely touches of board games and books to keep the family entertained should we have stayed in. I loved the sun shining through the skylights when sat in the living room or at the dining table. The high ceilings made the space seem so much larger. It was great to have a washing machine so you don’t have to take dirty clothes home. It would have been nice to have a coat stand as a few times we were caught in the rain and used the airer to hang our coats on. The hosts are lovely and so accommodating which was lovely as you don’t always get to speak direct when booking through an app. Would highly recommend - we found it great value for money. Thank you.

Hi Kate, thanks every so much for the feedback. So happy you enjoyed your stay. The coat hanger is a great idea and I will get on to that straight away. Do let us know if you ever want to stay again and we'll through in a bottle of champers for your return visit - or for any referrals! Hope your home is all sorted now. Emma Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage."

The double beds were really comfortable and bedding and furnishings were great. Unfortunately the plug in the bath wasn’t working properly which made it very difficult to use. On saying that we had a lovely stay and ideal base for us visiting family and will definitely return.

Hi Sue, thank you so much for the feedback. It is important to us to hear what needs improving so your next stay is better! We have purchased a new plug mechanism and had that fitted. As such, if you are ever in the area please drop me a text and I will bring you a bottle of wine to make up for the inconvenience. All the best, Emma & Simon. Property Owner

  • "Great time was had and what a great property, everything was perfect, the only thing I can say was wrong is that the single bed is broken and needs replacing, however this did not impact our stay too much and I don’t want to take anything away from the beautiful property."

. it was a great location and a great place, thank you

Hi Sharon, Thank you so much for the feedback. It's important for us to hear so we can make the right improvements and make your next stay better! The property is secured by an electric gate and there is a designated parking space. It overlooks the Chesterfield canal. Wouldn't hesitate to book this property again in the future.

  • "Perfect property for our weekend stay."

Great facilities and lots of places to eat and drink within walking distance. Really comfortable beds! Only one negative: on Saturday, very loud music from the 24-hour gym over the road (at least that’s where we thought it was coming from) that went on quite late and was annoying enough to make us close windows.

Hi Linda, Thank you so much for your response. We are super pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Canalside. Sorry about the noise across the road - this is news to us but good to know! • "I booked the property for my daughter her husband and 2 boys."

They were comfortable and had most things they needed. However as it was a 3 week stay a tumble dryer would have been useful. Although carpets on stairs were good unfortunately you could feel the spikes of the grips. Lovely property and the owner provided a change of linen

Hi Janet, many thanks for the feedback. Just so you know the washing machine is also a tumble dryer - so I have updated the instruction manual to show this. Have a great 2023 and hope to see you back again! Emma Property Owner

  • "We had a most enjoyable stay at Canalside Wharf."

Access to the property was well explained and ran smoothly. The building is very well sited with the Chesterfield Canal on one side and Asda on the other. The town of Retford was pleasant and all within easy walking distance. The property is new and very well furnished, containing everything that we wanted. Emma was very helpful in explaining the occasional query that we had. We are happy to recommend the property.

Many thanks for the feedback. We are super pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Do come back in 2023! All the best, Emma & Simon Property Owner

  • "Lovely little house with views of the canal."

Tucked away so you feel as though you are on the outskirts, even though you have the town centre and supermarket right next to you. Nice park also 5mins away. Owners were very accommodating, even at last minute and left full instructions for parking, key etc. A lovely holiday had by all and would recommend.

Many thanks for the feedback Cat. We are super pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Do come back in 2023! All the best, Emma & Simon Property Owner

  • "This property is very cute on first site."

Aesthetically it’s great but lacks practicality which makes it difficult to have a comfortable stay for a family of five. None of the bedrooms have any storage at all, this needs to be remedied because the rooms are so small one cannot fit suitcases in them either, in order to just live out of the cases. The down stairs bedroom really needs to have some kind of cupboard in the lobby to make it usable. The downstairs bathroom could really use a wall shower. This property would work better for a couple but I would suggest the owners go with 5 people and luggage for a week and they will see all the issues for themselves. Kitchen was good, nicely equipped. Would have been nice to have instructions for the stove top and oven but other than that kitchen was great. When we first arrived there was trash in the bathroom bins and many spiders and cobwebs, not sure how recently it had been cleaned. Overall I would not recommend this property as is. If improvements were made it would much more useable. Location is great so it is a shame more thought was not put into how useable the space would be for a family of five.

Hi Jane, Many thanks for staying at Canalview and sharing you feedback. It's important to hear what you say so we can improve the property for future guests. We are adding storage to the rooms as you mentioned and have got a stack of 6 foot shelves in the downstairs bedroom. The downstairs bathroom ceiling is too low for a standing shower unfortunately. And I will add instructions for the stove top Apologies for missing the bathroom bin too. I'm kicking myself for that as I like things to be perfect for our guests!! Wishing you a great 2023 ahead.
