"Absolutely lovely host could not fault her, all issues sorted quickly and promptly."
Nice house and lots of care taken to make you feel at home. Area not the best where the property is located but great if you just need a base for the Peak District and are willing to travel for walks etc. If you have dogs the neighbour isn’t fond of them which slightly ruins it being dog friendly.

"Photos and description spot on so I'll add just a few thoughts."
You might call it dated and oddly laid out, but it's a historic property, really, by today's standards; well-preserved and with fascinating insights into the owners' lives here and their parents. The house is full of the owners' ornaments, books, etc., almost as if you are sharing it with them. We found this homely and charming, and it meant it was very well equipped. If you live a clutter-free life, you'll want to go elsewhere. Our dog enjoyed the secure garden and nearby fields. The rules on-site request no dogs on beds or other furniture. That was fine for us, and will be of great comfort to the pet-free (the place was very clean), but I suspect it would be a deal-breaker for someone. There was some road noise, but not usually at night. The lounge and two of the bedrooms are at the back. Friendly owners and a nice welcome pack completed the package. This house suited us, and we would happily rebook if returning to the area.

"Lovely garden and we got what we saw in the photos in terms of decor, furniture and fittings, so quite dated but comfortable."
Noted that there was parking for two cars plus one across the road. However the entrance to the on site parking was narrow and if we had brought the range rover it would not have got through the gate and hard to see how you get two large cars parked up.Also the hedge at the front meant zero visibility when pulling out across the pavement. Reversing in was also difficult given the house is sited on a busy road. Only two of us came on holiday and we took the rooms at the rear of the house so no traffic noise. I think the front bedroom would certainly hear the traffic . Washing machine and dryer came in useful. Also nice gesture with the wine, biscuits and milk being provided on our arrival. Also good range of kitchen items plus tea towels. Well supplied and also lots of bedroom storage . Good road links into The Peak District . Large supermarket only a few minutes away.

"We had a lovely week away staying at The Old Grocery."
Beautiful house. Lovely large garden for our dogs to explore. We were greeted with biscuits and wine as it was a special birthday in the family. Lovely walks nearby and not too far to drive to some parts of The Peak District. Highly recommend, will definitely return. Thank you to the lovely host.

"It’s a lovely house, very dated and reminds me of the ‘70s but that is its charm."
The garden is fully enclosed and large. Would be very dog friendly, apart from the neighbour who called over the fence and said ‘I hope your dogs won’t bark!’ (He had a dog that was barking at the time - so ironic) he went on quite a bit and said ’I hope I haven’t ruined your holiday’! Considering I had only been in the property for 40 mins it wasn’t a good start to the holiday. So if you have vocal dogs just be aware that there are notices in the house warning you about limiting your dogs from barking. There are some good large parks within 15 mins drive and many National Trust places to visit that are close by. So if you don’t mind being out and about it’s a good base.

"Lovely cottage with a fabulous garden, great location for touring the Peak District."
-
"Lovely stay in The Old Grocery ,would highly recommend very comfortable ."
We loved the beautiful garden and so did our little dog Oscar .
-
"The Old Grocery is a charming home to stay in and still retains it's old world charm."
It's ideally situated for touring around and, if the weather is favourable, has a lovely garden to relax in. Being an older property do not expect a modern interior, but it still retains a much loved family home feeling. The welcoming package of tea, coffee and biscuits etc was very gratefully received. Only one complaint, the main bathroom door sticking in the top left hand corner and nearly pulling the door handle off to get out! We didn't shut the door after that incident.

"We had a lovely 4 day stay at this large cottage."
(4 adults). It was so comfy and cosy but spacious at the same time. Every home convenience has been thought of. There was a huge amount of information on the area and helpful recommendations of places to eat. We found the social history fascinating and were charmed by the age and features but if you like contemporary this is not the place for you. The pictures on website are a true representation. The garden was gorgeous. Handy shop next door. Parking was a little tricky but soon got the hang of it. There is plenty of parking over the road too. Easy access to Peak District - we were very happy with our choice and would definitely recommend.

"Comfortable family stay for a week at the Old Grocery."
Sizeable house and well kept garden, not too far from main roads but village atmosphere. Close to amenities, post office and Barrow Hill roundhouse, as well as various tourist attractions. Welcome pack, bedding, towels and responsive host. We would consider staying again.
-
"Wonderful cottage, really well cared for and a very welcoming feel!"
Kitchen is well equipped and the rooms are lovely.

"I must apologise as we had to leave a day early due to unforseen circumstances."
The property is a great size and the garden is wonderful. The children had a fantastic time out there! The location is great for exploring and nearby to many attractions. There are supermarkets a few minutes drive away. The property itself has so many facilities it's brilliant! We would definitely visit again and stay for longer Margaret is a lovely host.

Very pleased & will definitely revisit the house, to visit more of the Peak District.

"Had a great week in The Old Grocery."
Old fashioned decor but clean and tidy. Large house for the price and fabulous huge garden. My 3 year old grandson thought it was an adventure when he explored the garden with its apple and pear trees and it was fully enclosed which was great. Everything provided and a lovely welcome pack of biscuits, wine, milk and plenty of tea and coffee etc. As someone else mentioned the double bed was a little uncomfortable but all in all a great property. Quiet location and good for exploring the Peak District.

"From Home to Home!"
-
"Excellent property x very comfortable and homely"
-
"Arrival pack was much appreciated."
Bed could have been more comfortable. Mattress could do with a topper on it. Too many springs could be felt as it is now.
-
"This was a lovely home."
Old fashioned decor but unique and well kept . Garden was huge and fantastic for us and the dogs . Very secure too The position was just inside Barrowhill in quiet spot with easy access to countryside and close to some shops and supermarket . Top marks all round
-
"Very clean house with a beautiful, large garden."
Large rooms and comfortable beds. Great heating system too made it warm and cosy. Everything you need is there, really well equipped. Really handy having a shop next door too. Downsides are shower isn’t very powerful and no smart tv
-
"Loved our stay!"
We were greeted with some biscuits and wine. Kitchen was fully equipped with everything you might need(coffee, tea, suger, appliances...).Our dogs loved the wonderful fully enclosed private garden. Very peaceful and lovely place
-

Spacious bedrooms & comfortable beds plus 2 x wc's. Quaint interior with modern kitchen & bathroom. Very obliging owner, I will be recommending this property to family & friends.
-

"Right from the start we were made to feel very welcome by the owners."
The house was so comfortable and clean. It’s perfectly situated to reach all the areas of the Peak District you might want to visit. We have family who live close by so great position for us. We had such lovely weather and so got great use of the lovely garden, I was even able to make an apple pie from the fallen cooking apples off the tree at the bottom of the garden. This house was a loved family home for many years and is still owned by the same family whose parents built it, with pictures of when it was a shop on the walls. Lovely to get to know a bit of history of the place. When we go away we look for somewhere near family that can meet the needs of both us and our two dogs. The old Grocery is a lovely place to stay and we wouldn’t hesitate to book this cottage again.
-
"It was a lovely house with very accommodating owner but I was on edge the whole time as I had a two year old and there were so many ornaments I was always worried that something would get broken."
-
"The house was comfortable, clean and well equipped."
The garden is a real feature and great fir dogs. We did find the general area around the house not what we had anticipated.
-
"We had a wonderful holiday at the old grocery."
Margaret was so welcoming, left us some milk and biscuits and all the things we needed for our holiday. I wish we could have stayed longer. Our dogs loved the large garden and we had lovely walks. Definitely coming back here.
-
"Everything was just perfect."
The only minor niggle was that there were so few electric sockets. I need to use a CPAP machine and needed to move the bed to plug it in. The garden was glorious and much enjoyed by our party, especially our little dog. We enjoyed eating outside in the sun!
-
"The garden is large and fully enclosed so ideal for dogs."
The kitchen has almost everything you would need. There are several dog walks direct from the property and Linacre Reservoirs is only 7 miles away with lots of walking trails. The Stag restaurant at the Devonshire Arms, Middle Handley provides excellent food and service.
-
"We were looking for somewhere that was close to the Peak District, with room for two vehicles ad some space for our party's dog!"
The Old Grocery met our needs, and whetted our appetite for future stays in the area.
-
"Great location and garden which is very dog safe."
There is a park right behind the property for giving your dog a quick walk and also numerous options locally both on foot and a short drive away for longer walks. Property has been in the family since construction in 1940s, some of the internal furnishings reflect this and to us only added to its charm. All electrical appliances you would expext are provided and owner(s) were very friendly and welcoming. We plan to return if it is available when we are next booking a UK break
-
"The property was clean and well equipped."
Although we did not meet them, the owners were very pleasant and helpful on the telephone. The garden was particularly good for our dog, with secure fencing and plenty of room to run about in and out of the trees and shrubs.
-
"Lovely cottage with an outstanding garden that was totally secure even for my escapologist Springer Spaniel."
The bed was incredibly comfortable and everything you could require was provided in the kitchen. A lovely welcome pack and helpful owners completed a delightful stay.
-

A very large garden for the dog to have a run around in and great walks on the doorstep very restful week - just what we needed. The cottage was very clean and we appreciated all the effort the owners put in place to make our holiday safe.

Speaks volumes in its self.

"This is a very comfortable cottage, on a small housing estate."
The owner is really kind, and gave a bit of family history on the property which was really touching. Very well equipt cottage with a fantastic garden . You can walk along the Chesterfield Canal nearby, otherwise you need to travel further for things to do. There are lots if lovely country villages and historic houses with fabulous grounds to explore just a short drive away.
-
"Warm & very comfortable, lovely secure garden for our dog."
Bit like stepping back in time to the 1970's inside. Perhaps needs just z little de-cluttering so that those who choose to do self catering actually have some cupboard space. It was like home from home with absolutely everything you could want. Thank you very much for our welcome gifts and for making us very welcome. Rochester. Kent.

"We had a wonderful week staying at the old grocery."
The dogs loved the garden and everything was just perfect! I’d highly recommend this property
-
"Cottage had a nice feel to it."
Everything you needed was provided. Excellent garden especially having a dog. Some great pubs only a few miles away. Very good value for money
-
"Such a lovely house, very well equipped with a cosy lived in feel, far better than just 'another holiday home', garden was completely enclosed and felt very relaxed there, hope to come back very soon."
-
"A spacious, well equipped and comfortable family home with a warm welcome, plenty of parking and lovely walks from the door along the Chesterfield Canal."
-
"Loved the garden ideal when the sun was out, also the fact there were two shops and one was actually next door, will be returning again next year hopefully."
Ideal for popping into Chesterfield to visit the sights and markets.
-
"A perfect location for exploring the Peak District and also places such as Rother Valley, Clumber Park and Yorkshire Sculpture Park."
The garden was ideal for the dogs - very secure. The house was cosy and extremely well equipped. There were several well-organised folders with information about places to go and things to do, and a thoughtful welcome pack of tea, coffee, biscuits and breakfast provisions. All in all, an absolutely perfect holiday cottage.
-
"No we expect a good service from Sykes and that's what we received ."
Thank you
-
"This holiday home was the owners' parents' home and you can tell."
It has everything you could ever need and the owners are the nicest we've ever come across.
-
"Great property for dogs which are safe in the garden and there are lots of local walks."
Separate utility area and a door to stop dogs going upstairs are bonuses. The area around the house isn't anything to write home about, but there is lots to do in the local area, and it is on the edge of the Peak District. The house itself is very dated internally and is like time travel to the 1970s but it is comfortable, roomy and well equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Good value for money.

"A super property."
Extremely well presented and very very good value for money.
-
"Within the first night of the stay our 2 kids asked if we could stay again."
I'm local born to the area but have been in Dumfries, Scotland for 26years and visit area at least once a year. Have stayed in various holiday cottages but this was the best yet for every reason - clean, welcoming, comfortable, great facilities, homely, excellent information available and close to what & where we wanted(family/friends). The only thing I missed from home was a radio in the kitchen but that is a minor detail. We had family visit us and they too were impressed. Looking forward to a return trip.

The property
This lovely detached house sits in the centre of the village of Barrow Hill.
This is an ideal property for a family holiday.
The dining room at The Old Grocery was once the village grocery store supplying the village with all essential provisions.
Nowadays the room is just perfect for languorous dinners.
The cosy sitting room, with its lovely view of the garden and cosy living flame gas fire, provides lots of space for guests to relax following another exciting day exploring this area.
The three bedrooms offer flexible accommodation whatever the requirements.
Outside the large lawned garden offers an ideal space for the children to run off the last of their energy, or for dining alfresco on a summer's evening.
Children will also enjoy the playing field and children's playground in the village which are only a minute's walk away.
The village is close to the beautiful Chesterfield Canal with great walking on the towpath known as The Cuckoo Way.
The Trans-Pennine Trail is also close by and is just the ticket for walkers and cyclists.
Guests can look out for the brass monkey on The Clocktower and it was said that its tail pointed upwards when the Staveley Coal and Iron Company was in profit, and downwards if it made a loss!
There are lots of good local walks from the doorstep and with easy access to the Peak District, walkers will be spoilt for choice.
Chesterfield really is a gateway for exploring Derbyshire and the glorious Peak District.
Whether you’d like to visit stately homes, which the county has more than its fair share of, or castles, including the fairytale mansion of Bolsover Castle, this area has it all.
It's not all about the superb adventure playground of Britain's first National Park, or the myriad of pretty villages scattered about, or the iconic Chatsworth House and Estate, it is the huge and diverse variety on offer here to suit everybody whatever their age.
This is a wonderful holiday property.
About the location
BARROW HILL
Chesterfield 5.5 miles; Worksop 12 miles; Sheffield 14 miles.
Barrow Hill was once part of a medieval deer park belonging to the Lords of the Manor of Staveley and beneath this park the land was rich in iron and coal. Consequently these minerals were mined. Nowadays the village is home to The Roundhouse, the last surviving operational roundhouse engine shed in Great Britain. Throughout the year there are galas featuring working steam and diesel trains. The Chesterfield Canal meanders through this area and is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful and varied waterways in England and the Trans-Pennine Trail is close by and is perfect for cyclists and walkers alike. Also within an easy drive you can reach the delights of the Peak District, visit Hardwick Hall, an Elizabethan country house, explore Clumber Park or Cresswell Crags, or spend time discovering the market town of Chesterfield with its famous crooked spire.
