  • "A lovely hillside cottage with great views down the valley."

It's warm and cosy with everything that you need. The owners are very friendly, lovely people who welcome you on your arrival. The garden was perfect for our dog with plenty of room to play and relax. There are many walks directly from the cottage so no need to drive anywhere if you don't want to. Belper, an attractive and busy very old market town is close by for provisions and definitely worth a visit. The only personal criticism was that the main bed was a little too soft for me but that's it. We had a nice relaxing time and will book again in the future. Paula & Co Xx

  • "We had a lovely, peaceful time at Chevinside."

However, we felt that the differing floor levels and steps should be mentioned in the property details as this would affect those with mobility issues. The kitchen area was really good but some of the furnishings and light fittings elsewhere were a bit tired. Look out for the field full of pheasants behind the cottage and bats at dusk.

  • "The property was not very clean."

Kitchen and bathroom had not been cleaned from previous customers (faeces on toilet seat, crumbs on worktop). Sheets did not smell fresh. We spent as little time there as possible

Thank you for your feedback, the property was left in a clean and tidy condition by the previous guests. Upon their departure, we cleaned and changed the bed linen as usual. Unfortunately, after cleaning the toaster we forgot to remove the crumbs from the worktop, we also overlooked two stains on the underside of the toilet seat. You contacted us and we fixed both problems immediately. We were available at any time as are Sykes Cottages to fix any issues that impacted your stay. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was in an idyllic location, the views were amazing and the cottage looked stunning."

It was well equipped and had everything we needed. The thing that spoilt it for us was the really strong “wet dog” smell in the lounge and hallway. We have owned dogs ourselves so are not adverse to dogs at all but we could not sit in the lounge due to the strong smell (air fresheners, febreeze and open windows made no difference). I think the cottage would be faultless if the carpet was replaced with flooring that could be mopped clean. We would definitely go back if that was the case.

Thank you for your comments and we are glad you enjoyed the location. We are sorry you found an odour. it has been a very busy season and combined with an unusually rainy period. We are always available to help as we do give our phone number to guests and Sykes Cottages also have a dedicated help line. The carpet and floors will of course have a thorough check. We are glad you found everything well equipped and that you loved the location. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is in the perfect place unfortunately there were a few issues the front door was in very poor repair there was no working shower as this had failed the electrical test."

The floors were quite dirty and the carpets were stained very badly but as I said the passion of the cottage is good just requires some tender loving care l don’t like giving bad revues.

Thank you for your feedback. To clarify, we were having the shower replaced and regrettably the wrong type had been ordered and so we had to have it reordered which did cause some delay. We did explain this to you and I remember we discussed if a shower hose tap attachment as a temporary solution would help and we were advsied that you did not need one. Carpets will unfortunately take some wear and tear over a busy season but we will of course have the carpets checked as soon as possible. We are available by phone as are Sykes Cottages and would have checked and addressed any concern about the door if you had mentioned it to us at any point during your stay. We are glad you liked the location. Property Owner

We were greeted by the owners who were a lovely couple who then left us alone for the holiday duration but were easily contacted if needed. The cottage itself is well equipped and had everything we needed. Access is via a fairly narrow, steep drive but has parking for a couple of cars at the top. The cottage has views over Belper and is surrounded by farmland. We had a very pleasant stay.

  • "The property was a good size for us (2 adults and 2 small children), but wouldn't have taken anyone else."

Which equally we didn't need it to take any further people. The beds were comfortable but the sheets, although very clean smelt of smoke. As did the towels. It was lovely weather so I left the towels to blow dry for a while. The kitchen was easy to cook in and completely functionally. The location was excellent and the seating area outside was a real sun trap. The grass outside was wonderful for the kids to play on and we loved being so near the cows in the field.

Lots of walks on the doorstep, some easy, others a bit more challenging.. An easy stroll into the town down the river and over the footbridge. The cottage has a decent front garden, plenty big enough for ours dog to stretch his legs in the morning ahead of his big walk! There's an open fire in the lounge if needed with plenty of fuel.. we found we didn't need it as it was plenty warm enough, especially once the sun came out. The owners are lovely. They just leave you to it, which is nice, but I imagine would be more than helpful if you had any issues (which we didnt).. All in all this is up there with one of the best places we have stayed..

The views around the cottage were idyllic and although the owner lives next door it doesn't feel like your been over looked as at other places I've stayed and my daughter loved the horses in the field adjacent. The owners were friendly and helpful but not in any way intrusive and we were left mostly alone to enjoy our stay. The cottage was very cold when we arrived but I think this was more down to the cottage being empty for a few days prior to our arrival and the very cold weather at the time and It took a couple of days to get it warm again and then it was fine and there was plenty on wood for the fire to keep us going. The cottage was clean and we enjoyed sitting in the lounge with the fire going in the dark evenings

The owners could not have been more helpful and welcoming - even fixing a parasol for us to have some shade during the hot bank holiday weekend! It was an absolute pleasure to meet them, and they were so kind with their help and suggestions for how to enjoy ourselves as much as possible - not to mention allowing us to help ourselves to the apples, blackberries and damsons in the garden! The cottage was really well equipped, with great kitchen equipment - we found all the equipment we needed and more (even baking equipment, measuring scales, teaspoon measures!) - the table was a good size for the cottage, and we liked the cosiness of the interior. Many a happy evening spent reading or playing board games and enjoying the peace. The location was ideal for exploring both the Derwent Valley and the Peak District National Park, and we had a fantastic time - particularly recommend Crich Tramway Village! One small piece of (hopefully constructive!) feedback: the beds are all quite uncomfortable. The mattresses are not very thick and if you're not as light as a feather, you can feel the base of the bed through the mattress. Perhaps time to consider replacing? Other than that, it was a wonderfully quiet, relaxing and restorative holiday. Thank you.

Mrs Jordan is very welcoming and friendly. Not far to the local amenities, more or less on doorstep, a short 10 minute,if that, drive to Belper which can be seen from the cottage. There are steps throughout the cottage, which made it very quirky, even a small step down into the master bedroom. Although some of the decor is tired, we had a lovely stay, and it was a good central point to visit local attractions. The track up to the cottage is steep, however, we had a small car and had no trouble at all. Walking the short distance from the car to the front door is also steep (but well maintained), we were fine, but some might find it difficult to carry anything heavy. Please don’t let that put you off, it is very minor indeed and really, the photo of the cottage does show this.

The owner is very friendly and helpful. My mother in law and I stayed there this weekend and had a brilliant time. The farm animals were great to watch, the weather was brilliant (which helps but can't be relied upon). I imagine it would be equally beautiful covered in snow. There is a Morrisons within walking distance (quite a good walk, not a few minutes). If you've got a car you can visit many of the surrounding areas but if you're without a car you're pretty stuck but that is exactly what we wanted. We couldn't fault it, absolutely beautiful. We would love to go again.
