  • "Sundial cottage is just amazing."

In such a peaceful location. Locals are friendly. Recommed The Miners Arms. The cottage has a lovely dog friendly garden. The cottage is just beautiful with everything you need. I could happily live here. Sitting with a log fire on at night is wonderful . Recommend Spencer Bros just down the road for logs and kindling. The bath is lovely and spacious. Downstairs shower and toilet very handy. Few pointers... the freezer is a small compartment at the top of the fridge. The step in the kitchen caught us out a few times. If you need the loo in the middle of the night remember the low frame. You get used to it after a couple of days. Cleaning was good. All equipment we needed in the kitchen. All in all a stunning cottage in a beautiful location. Bet it's amazing at christmas. Hope to be back one day.

Many thanks for your very positive and helpful review, Andrew. We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay so much and would be very pleased to welcome you back! Property Owner

Cottage is beautiful, 2 very large sitting rooms and a kitchen with everything you would need. Downstairs shower room was great. Upstairs though stairs were as described 2 great bedrooms, had a great nights sleep as so quiet. Lovely enclosed dog friendly garden. Over roading parking was great and 2 pubs in the village even better

  • "Disappointment on arrival: an under-counter fridge with an icebox is NOT a fridge/freezer."

There is room for a proper freezer next to the fridge, but this space is taken up with a strange trolley contraption. Being a very old cottage, one would expect to have to stoop through some doorways, but having to bend practically double to access the upstairs bathroom lost its charm after a number of bumped heads in the middle of the night. No mention of this in the property description. The cottage has been sympathetically refurbished and was very clean. We were able to sit in the garden a couple of times and this was very pleasant.

We are sorry to hear of your disappointment with the fridge and have asked Sykes to amend the description accordingly. The bathroom door has not been mentioned before, but we have also asked Sykes to put a note in the property details for additional clarity. We hope you were otherwise able to enjoy your stay. • "Our family of three enjoyed a lovely week here."

We were blessed with good weather. The cottage is a few minutes walk away from the two village pubs. Brassington is a picturesque, small and friendly village. The Sunday lunch at the nearby Old Gate Inn is highly recommended. There is no shop but we just got supplies on our days out (also had a Sainsbury’s delivery on arrival day). The cottage is well equipped with a beautiful garden. I enjoyed reading/relaxing on the top patio and we had some meals outside at the table on the middle patio. We visited Bakewell, Buxton, Matlock and Ashbourne - all within a 20/30 minute drive. The Chatsworth Estate Shop at Pilsley is also worth a visit. Wanted to visit Haddon Hall but sadly they don’t allow dogs, not even in the grounds. Most evenings we spent catching up on the Olympics. Took us a couple of days to get the hang of the TV - you have to hold down the on/power button on the remote for a few seconds otherwise you don’t get a picture, just sound. Communication with owner (via Sykes app) was excellent.

We're delighted you could benefit from the garden in the beautiful weather, Jane. Many thanks for taking the time to write a review and to provide some tips for other guests. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is lovely with a very sweet garden area, parking is tight for two cars but manageable."

The area is great and the local pub welcoming and as cosy as advertised! It was disappointing that we were charged £20 per dog especially as the dogs had to be confined downstairs, so £40 for our two dogs seemed very excessive. The basics could also have been better provided, we ran out of toilet roll and the wood provided wasn’t ep even enough to have a fire for one evening. Otherwise a lovely property in a great setting.

Dear Julie, We're glad that you enjoyed the cottage and the setting. Thank you for the other feedback. I am afraid the dog charge is what we pass on from the cleaners, regardless of length of stay (3 nights in your case). You certainly should have been provided with adequate wood and toilet rolls, so I am very sorry and will contact you separately. If you had contacted us at the time, I would have been pleased to solve this for you. Property Owner

Everything looked brand new to us, the bathrooms were really of a high specification too.The garden would be perfect to sit in during the Summer for a morning coffee or afternoon glass of wine, no grassy area if you have a large dog. We managed to park two cars and one motorbike on the drive which was very convenient for us. The location was perfect, and the village is pretty with a couple of pubs which we tried out.

  • "We had a lovely break at Sundial cottage, which is as described."

We were warm and cosy in a quiet and peaceful area. The locals and the two pubs were very welcoming and friendly, and the location in Brassington is great. Minor issues were that we didn't have any kindling and just four logs on arrival, so not enough for a starter pack for a first fire. A few bumped heads from the low door frame in the bathroom, but we were warned! Lastly, the plumbing/central heating was very noisy, especially when in the double bedroom. But, a good time was had by all, and we really enjoyed our stay, thank you.

We are really sorry that you did not receive the full fuel starter pack: we leave clear instructions for the housekeepers to provide enough logs, kindling and firelighters, so it is disappointing that they did not on this occasion. It is also spotlessly clean. The downsides are: that there is no mobile phone signal (although there is a landline for emergency calls), and the stairs and garden are very steep. These points should be mentioned in the listing.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. The landline is indeed for outgoing emergency calls, and we also provided you beforehand with the number for incoming calls. Most people are happy to use their mobiles over the Wifi or WhatsApp, as the signal is variable in the village. The owners really have thought of everything - they rent out their own holiday bolt hole and it really shows: the cottage has been furnished and refurbished to a very high standard. We loved having two sitting rooms - a couple of people could watch the TV in one room whilst others read. played a board game or simply relaxed in the other (there are TVs in both rooms if people want to watch different things too!) The garden is beautiful and completely dog secure. The cottage is right on the edge of the Southern Peak District but most key sites like Castleton, Eyam and Chatsworth were about half an hour's drive. Even more northern points like Lyme Park were within an hour's drive. The cottage is very nearby Carsington Water with water sports and bike hire available... and of course the whole of the Peak District is wonderful walking country. The next door neighbours are very friendly and supportive too - a lot of people comment on this in the Visitors' book. The owners, although not local, were also very helpful and friendly. The cleaners do an amazing job - the cottage was so clean on our arrival. We do like booking via an industry approved company like Sykes as we do feel secure about booking and cancellation issues - especially in the uncertain times of the last two years.

We booked the cottage as it was 4 stars so we were expecting a little more luxury.

We were very concerned to read your feedback, as we have taken great care over the cottage. Whilst the temperature on the thermostat is deliberately lowered for night-time comfort, it easy to override, as described in the instructions in the cottage and sent to you beforehand. The bedding is high-quality, and the duvets are recommended for winter-use; there are also blankets in both bedrooms. Once we became familiar with the rather awkward parking technique into the driveway, we had no problems at all during the week, and were very warm and comfortable throughout the week. The cottage is well equipped, with plenty of instructions as to how to use everything in the cottage. We would definitely recommend the cottage to our friends and family and hope to return ourselves in the future as we are particularly fond of Derbyshire. Thank you John and Shirley for your very helpful guide which you Emailed to us prior to our stay. Peter and Diana

It is a beautiful area with plenty to do and see. I have used Sykes twice now and the company have provided perfect cottages. They are extremely efficient regarding the booking and would certainly used them again. In the cottage description I feel there should have been a reference to an extremely steep step at the beginning of the stairs which is immediately behind the door. Apart from this the cottage was described perfectly.

The cottage was absolutely gorgeous , it was stocked with everything you’d possibly need. The road leading up was very narrow, but it was incredibly peaceful. The pub in the village no longer sells the basics, so you need to drive to get any supplies you need, but we loved it.

Second visit. Owners have thought of everything and more. Parking can be an issue if you have a large car as space to manoeuvre is tight and more so if next door neighbour parks at edge of driveway. Couldn’t get on driveway when we arrived and also on two other occasions. Friendly enough and did stop parking there after we mentioned it to him. Brilliant location and ye olde gate inn is great for pie night.

We had to travel a mile down the road to get a phone signal and then be given an alternative code. By the time we got back to the Cottage it was raining so we had to unload in the rain.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that you had difficulties regarding the key code. Key collection information is sent 6 weeks in advance, or at the time of full payment if booked less than 6 weeks in advance. With it being sent so far in advance we do send a key collection reminder 7 days prior to arrival also, this email will advise if any codes have been changed by the owners for your reference. I can confirm that this was sent to you, apologies if it caused confusion. Property Owner

It's very well appointed, the very recent refurbishment is of a very high standard. There was a welcome pack when we arrived which was very appreciated. All the comforts of home but in a quiet, romantic 16th century house, what's not to like? The neighbours are very friendly, there are two great pubs only a couple of minutes' walk away and Brassington is a perfect starting point to explore the Peak District. The service provided by the owners was very personal and made us feel very much welcome. Although we didn't have great weather, we sat in the cosy garden whenever the sun came out. Our Cocker Spaniel was also very happy with the space outside. All in all a perfect holiday. Would recommend 10/10.

The property

This detached Grade II listed stone cottage, formerly a pair of lead miners’ dwellings, is the oldest cottage (c.1615) in the village of Brassington, tucked away in a wonderfully peaceful location on the fringes of the Peak District National Park.

With versatile sleeping arrangements, the recently refurbished accommodation is equally ideal for friends, couples or families.

Approach the cottage through the fully enclosed pretty terraced garden and enter the well-equipped kitchen.

Across the corridor is a well-appointed modern shower room.

In the evening, you can look forward to socialising in the beamed sitting room or simply closing the shutters on the mullioned windows and relaxing with a good book in front of the cosy wood burner.

For a change of scenery, the spacious dining room with sitting area is perfect for enjoying your favourite meals or sinking into an armchair in front of another wood-burning stove.

Upstairs, the twin bedroom has ample hanging and drawer space and tastefully co-ordinated decoration.

The large king-size double bedroom, with further mullioned windows, has a day bed for a third person as well as a travel cot.

A spacious and characterful beamed family bathroom completes the accommodation.

The garden is set on three levels, with wooden dining furniture (and barbecue), an arbour with seating and a top sun terrace with views towards the hills.

Brassington is an unspoilt conservation village perched on a hillside on the edge of the Peak District National Park, in the midst of open countryside, very close to the Limestone Way and to the High Peak Trail for cyclists.

One of the two welcoming pubs, Ye Olde Gate Inn, was the Times' cosiest pub in Britain and the Independent's 2017 unspoilt pub of the year.

The attractive market towns of Wirksworth, Ashbourne, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton are all within thirty minutes, as are historic houses such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall.

Close by is beautiful Carsington Water, covering 750 acres, with some of the best sailing in the country.

The site also offers boating, biking and windsurfing, along with shops, a restaurant and a children’s adventure playground.

There is something for everyone in all seasons in this delightful location.
