  • "Great location for a walking holiday - literally walking distance to Dove Dale and the Tissington trail."

House is clean and warm and reasonably well furnished. Offers excellent value for money. Have stayed here several times and always had a good experience.

  • "Absolutely loved our stay."

Great base for walking day trips and also perfect for relaxing lounge days. Loved the local pub too, within walking distance with good food and a fine selection of ales. The owner of the cottage was so friendly and helpful with any questions we had prior to arrival. Will definitely be back in the future!

There were delightful views at both the front and back of the cottage. The garden was large with a seating area and table and chairs. The cottage had good facilities and both Ashbourne and Tissington were easy to get to. All in all a great cottage to stay in.

  • "Cottage is in a lovely location, well equipped and has plenty of space."

However, beds hard, especially double bed and plastic sheets uncomfortable. Pans were not clean and big pan rusty. Couldn't see how fire in living room worked but would have made the room cosier. Couldn't get the TV to work for current channels- could only watch Prime videos without paying. Some information and instructions for the TV would have been useful.

  • "Fantastic location, right near the start of Dovedale and also close to start of the Tissington Trail."

The cottage was spotlessly clean on arrival and some tasty scones provided. That said, it was not up to the standard we have come to expect from Sykes in a few areas. Comfort-wise it was a tad spartan (although warm enough!), but some of the appliances and fittings need to be replaced. The shower only just worked with a good deal of fiddling, and some of the bathroom fittings are broken. The cooker is on its last legs. Kitchen equipment needs updating - no bread knife, no side plates. We had a great holiday due too the cottage location but the owners need to give it some more TLC!

Everything was warm, clean and tidy. The house was not suitable for 6 adults; the small bedroom had 2 single beds and 1 was a camp bed. Also, the lounge only had seating for 5. However, we booked last minute and managed and were glad to find somewhere and we had a great break with our friends.

I Stayed with my friend and our children, four in all. There was ample space around the cottage for us all a nice dining table and six chairs so we could all sit together. Also a dishwasher! A novelty to us. The garden was lovely and the conservatory furniture was super comfortable. The cottage is situated within walking distance to the stepping stones of dovedale and what a wonderful walk it is to get there and lots of BIG hills to climb with wonderful views around. Thors cave is just a short drive and a definite must see. We would love to return one day. Oh and Louise left the most delicious fruit scones we have ever had in the fridge for us

  • "My parents rented Cloud View Cottage in the village of Thorpe for two weeks over Christmas 2022 and the New Year."

Family members stayed there at different times with my parents during this period and I can honestly say we thoroughly enjoyed our break there. The cottage was spacious and clean and we all especially liked spending time in the small conservatory that backed onto the rear gardens. The surrounding countryside was beautiful, as was the little church nearby, and we had some lovely walks around the local area and beyond. Cloud View Cottage is dog friendly which made it even more accessible for people to visit. The owners who lived close by were friendly, helpful and amenable to any requests we had. We did feel the cottage would benefit from some general updating to increase it's appeal. For example, some of the mattresses were uncomfortable to sleep on due to the springs being felt on top. One of the bedrooms had folding guest type beds which weren't substantial enough for a good rest, and the cooker was very old. Despite these few points, we all enjoyed a lovely family break in picturesque Cloud View Cottage.

A lovely touch. Louise was very helpful and responded quickly with some queries I had before arriving. I felt there could be a few more kitchen utensils such as a bread knife, and large saucepans would have been great. A mirror in the main bedroom would be good too. A glass broke in the dishwasher but Louise was very kind about it. The adults loved being able to chill in the conservatory and watch the children play in the garden in the day time, and it was perfect for chilling in the evening. The location is stunning. Very quiet and close to Ilam Park and Dovedale. Would definitely recommend.

  • "Property is dirty, garden is not fully enclosed and owner refused to accept feedback when contacted through Sykes privately."

Shortly after arrival, we noticed that the downstairs toilet seat was dirty, when lifting it the underside of the seat was covered in brown and yellow spots! We then found a cheese like substance on a kitchen cupboard, crumbs and grease on work surfaces, the fridge hadn’t been wiped, dirty oven, dirty dishwasher, crumbs on the floor, and everything was sticky to touch! We then decide that we’d check the rest of the house. The wooden shelves by the side of the fire were filthy; the TV had been wiped but badly smeared. The bathroom was disgusting, the bath had some water still in it, there was a tidemark around it and the soap dish in the shower was filthy. Someone had left a small part of a bar of soap on a dirty soap dish and behind the sink was black mould. Again, the toilet was unclean too. We cleaned the property thoroughly, which we shouldn’t have had to do, but we just wanted to be able to enjoy our holiday. It should have been clean before our arrival. We mopped the floors and the water was filthy. Our second problem was regarding the garden, which was described as enclosed. We assumed this meant safe for dogs. It just meant there was a fence. This fence did not go down to the ground, there were gaps of approx 10” below the fence, with one larger gap leading to a very large drop down, this is definitely a safety issue for both dogs and children. Our dog disappeared on the first morning. He had gone through a gap into the garden next door, which we know now, but was missing for a while and was very worrying at the time as we were unsure where he had gone. We feel that this property has been neglected all round concerning cleanliness and safety. The list could go on further, no one else should have to spend their money on a very dirty cottage.

  • "This cottage was booked at the last minute, on the day of arrival, due to our original booking being cancelled."

The cottage was huge, warm and comfortable, with loads of storage space. The kitchen facilities, bedding and towels etc all appeared to be new. We were met by the owner with the keys and a box of lovely home made scones. Inside there was tea, coffee chocolates and milk in the fridge. Very thoughtful. The owners lived nearby and the neighbours and villagers were all friendly and had time to chat if they saw us walking the dog. We were also visited by a little friendly cat and a huge beautiful pheasant. The nearby countryside is beautiful with plenty of walks from the house. Ashbourne and Carsington Water are both very close and well worth a visit. Overall a very quiet and relaxing holiday, we would like to come back.

About the location

ASHBOURNE

Matlock 15.7 miles; Bakewell 16.6 miles; Chatsworth 20.4 miles.

Lying at the southern end of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a perfect example of an English market town - market place with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and almshouses. In its heyday in the 18th century, the town was a fashionable social centre and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer in terms of restaurants and inns and is regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters - but don’t expect a bargain! For those who prefer more outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by. Alton Towers is just 20 minutes away.
