  • "This is an excellent house for a large group (there were 13 of us) It has a lovely warm atmosphere and is very cosy."

Every where was scrupulously clean, including all the crockery and glasses. Parking is easy at the house, though it's only about a 10 minute walk down into Holmfirth and there is a bus back up the big hill . There's also an excellent pub (The Farmers Arms) just around the corner.

  • "The old post office was a great holiday house to stay in."

There were 14 of us in total (and two dogs) ranging from age four to seventy. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and plenty of en-suites to keep everyone happy. There was plenty to explore in the local area and we even joined in a pub quiz at the local pub - Farmers arms. We took up the recommendation of eating out at Harvey’s as a family and really enjoyed our time. Being a large family we did cook and eat frequently at the house, the dining room was a great space to eat together (I would say that a little time and effort is probably needed to restock the house with updated kitchen appliances, but a huge bonus was the use of two dish washers, as a big family this was much needed). The communication was excellent from the hosts and all in all we had a wonderful family holiday in Holmfirth. One little niggle worth noting was that the washing machine was not in full repair and had a faulty sensor, this meant constant resetting - when reporting this we were told it was an existing issue. My recommendation is for the owners to simply buy a new one. With the price we paid for this holiday home we felt it tiresome dealing with a faulty appliance. With that being said I don’t want to end on a negative note this was a great house with plenty of space for all of us to enjoy a relaxing week together.

  • "We went as an extended family for my dad’s 70th and had a fantastic time."

The house was even nicer than expected. The kids loved the hot tub and we had such a fun evening playing pool in the basement. The person looking after the property was helpful and easy to contact. Holmfirth itself was beautiful with lots of little cafes, shops and pubs. We would happily come back.

  • "After making the original booking, we had a lot of trouble contacting Sykes Cottages."

For example, when trying to pay our balance, we could not find our booking on the website. Contact through phone calls was impossible. We ended up phoning Snaptrip, the umbrella company. In contrast, the management company was very easy to contact and responses were speedy. An example was to request a cot and highchair, which we could only do 24 hours before arrival ie couldn’t contact Sykes so had to rely on management company of the property. We were very lucky there was availability of these items. Generally, the property was great. Lots of room and good facilities. However, we had one very disappointing aspect. There were 9 toilets, 7 showers and 2 baths and the owners only provided 3 hand soaps. For the money we paid, we could not understand why at least small bars of soap were not available. Why were there shower gel dispensers on the wall and nothing in them? Were the guests expected to fill them?

Hi Jane. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Sykes. I will chase this up from my end to look for a future resolution. Thank you for your feedback about the soaps, that is very helpful and something we will loo at remedying. I will speak to the onsite team about this. I'm glad you otherwise enjoyed your stay and hopefully we see you again. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful stay."

The house is absolutely beautiful and really comfortable. Rooms are spacious and beds are cozy. There was a few small critiques from all nine of us who stayed. There is no hand wash in any of the rooms and we think there should be given the price etc. Also, just small things like salt and pepper, kitchen roll, t-bags and sugar would be great in the kitchen. There was a lovely welcome box with a few bits in which was great. The fridge leaked in the kitchen to the point where the floor was sodden so we had to leave a towel down the whole time. The showers have no pressure but everything else was superb. Thank you so much for having us. X

Hi Sharon. Thank you so much for the feedback, that is incredibly helpful. I will speak with the onsite team and look to improve all those points for future guests. I'm glad you otherwise enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Found the property not as described."

Rubbish left in bins, dust and cobwebs, outside area not clean, bbq not clean. The living room only has seating for 7 adults, we were a party of 11 adults that were expected to sit on the floor on bean bags. I would also like to say how disappointed we were with your company, when I booked, the week we would have preferred was to expensive so we opted for the later week at £4024 only to find you advertising that week for £3500

Back door lock could do with fixing, struggled to lock back door. Well equipped, clean, comfy beds, lovely soft towels. Nice touch and thoughtful welcome gift with birthday card and goodies. Lovely spacious house, comfy bed, everything we needed. Brilliant house for a family get together. Loved the hot tub. Struggled with 1 radiator in bedroom. Best nights sleep, where are the mattresses from? Want one. Perfect house and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Hi Linda, thank you so much for the feedback. The mattresses were from a mix of places but I know the downstairs mattress was from Sleep Matters, and the singles from IKEA. Property Owner

  • "The house was comfortable and well equipped, with plenty of room for our party of twelve."

The hot tub was serviced every day and a blocked drain was fixed the same day. Due to problems with one of the boilers, there was no running hot water on the upper floor, which caused some problems, although all the showers were working OK. We were told about the lack of hot water on the day before we arrived, but there was no offer of any refund for this inconvenience throughout our stay.

Hi Graham, thank you for your feedback. On the point about the hot water, that boiler only serviced the upstairs basin and bath, with the downstairs basin working as usual, so we believe the inconvenience was negligible. Hope to see you again Property Owner

About the location

HOLMFIRTH

Peak District National Park 3 miles; Meltham 4 miles

The old traditional Pennine town of Holmfirth is situated in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, on the edge of the West Yorkshire Pennines. Made famous by The Last of The Summer Wine TV series, there is more to Holmfirth than Compo and Nora Batty’s stockings! The ‘Picturedrome’, the North of England’s finest live music venue attracts many famous bands and is located right in the centre of the town. The pelotons from the Tour de France 2014 and the Tour de Yorkshire have both been through this quaint Holme Valley town en route to the iconic 524 metre Holme Moss climb two miles away. It is in these hills where cycling’s triple Olympic Medalist Ed Clancy grew up. Holmfirth also has a good public swimming pool and fitness centre, parks and some super shops and restaurants. The people here are friendly, the streets are quaint and the scenery is breathtaking. The Peak District National Park with its moors, dales, forests, lakes and reservoirs is also easily accessible. The Upper Derwent Valley, home to the spectacular Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs, and where the famous 617 ‘Dambusters’ Squadron practiced the audacious bombing raid on the Ruhr valley in 1943, is only a short scenic drive away. Slightly further is Chatsworth, the stately home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and situated close to the market town of Bakewell, the home of Bakewell Puddings. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The National Coal Mining Museum, Wentworth Castle, and the Hepworth Gallery are also within short drives away and well worth a visit. For a spot of culture, Holmfirth has annual festivals with many more attractions that bring visitors back for more; such as the Folk, Arts, and Food & Drink Festivals. Also not to be missed, is Holmfirth Vineyard and Restaurant, where you can book wine tasting tours and enjoy a lovely meal in the restaurant.
