  • "Great little cottage in the middle of the village."

Parking was a little hard to understand in advance but there was a hand drawn map in the cottage that made it all apparent on arrival. The doorway to the kitchen was very small so great care should be taken when moving between rooms. The shower was powerful enough and lovely and warm. We enjoyed our day and would love to come back.

  • "A lovely cosy cottage, in the heart of Castleton."

Low ceilings downstairs due to the age of the cottage, but the bedrooms upstairs are quite lofty in comparison. The cottage benefits from a lovely courtyard with the millstream running through it. The cottage was clean, and stocked with milk, tea, coffee and biscuits on arrival. Handsoap was provided in travel size bottles, shop bought would be a nicer touch and easier to use with wet hands. The cottage is 5 mins drive from Winnats Pass & a bit further on is the start to the Mam Tor walk. Ideally located for visiting the local caves. We can highly recommend the George pub for food (they even do takeaway pizza). We stayed on a particularly cold July weekend so might be nice to have the option of turning on the underfloor heating on in the bathroom, which would help with the dampness in here too. However all in all, a fabulous cottage in a perfect location.

Highly recommend The George for food… Gorgeous cottage to come back to and only more sun would have improved the experience as little opportunity to enjoy the sun trap of a courtyard with little brook running through it. Cottage ideal for small families and couples or friends… Parking may not always be directly outside the door however plenty of nearby spaces available in and around the village. Thank you for a super stay!

  • "Really lovely cottage and would have be amazing if it wasn’t for the cleanliness and parking issues."

Promises of a parking space and if not a parking pass. Asked for parking pass and was told it was no longer available. Parked outside the property up to the wall and got frowned at and a few head shakes, then moved to a different spot that the owner suggests in the info book to then get a note on my car one day and grief off a resident the next. The same resident said they had issue with the owner previously telling people they can park there when they can’t. It’s definitely not what you expect when away on a break with an young family and infact it ruined it for us as I don’t like confrontation and I’m a really easy going person but this tested me. As for the cleaning…the cleaner needs sacking! They must just go in wipe the toilet and make the beds. The oven was filthy, the washing machine and dishwasher was even filthy to the point we didn’t even want to use them. I removed the shower head for my 2 year old son to have a shower and the black grime that sat in the shower head holder was grim. The fireplace hadn’t even been cleaned from the people before using the log burner. The towels had bleach stains on. Mould on the walls. It could be such a lovely place but it just needs more care and attention. Little things like toilet rolls and hand soap, I have never stayed anywhere where you aren’t at least provided with hand soap in the bathroom, It costs nothing. It’s not like there’s loads of shops in the area where you can get this from either. Overall disappointing :(

We love it! Fabulous location in the heart of Castleton. Cosy and with all the facilities you need for a real home-from-home, including a log burner, smart TV, dishwasher. Outside the stream runs through the terrace and its waterside location is magical. Parking spaces adjacent to the cottage are not guaranteed but have never caused significant issues for us. • "When we arrived the toilet seat was hanging off."

Another renter had written about this in AUGUST! I messaged the owner who then drove from N. Wales to fit a new seat. It was only after he had left that we discovered the dishwasher was also broken! I messaged him again, he ordered the new part, but this hadn't arrived by the time we left. The grouting around the tiles in and around the shower was black with mould. The hob and oven, which we didn't use, we're filthy. The courtyard needed cleaning and on the day we left there were several rats running around. Every day we were woken early by the delivery vans to the cafe kitchen and disposal of rubbish from said cafe which was only feet from the front of the cottage, they were also using the cottage bins for their rubbish. Very disappointed, especially for the price at this time of year. Won't be going again. I think the owners were let down by their cleaner. Please note, feedback was given to the owners

.it was idyllic! It felt like home from the outset…the owner has thought of everything you could possibly need! The cottage is ideally situated for lots of both low and high level walking options without having to take the car from its parking spot right at the front door! There are lots of venues in the village if you want to eat out however the facilities for cooking etc are ‘spot on’! The outside rear patio is a sun trap and we loved sitting out with a glass of wine after a day on the hills! Just perfect……we’ll be back without a doubt!

Loved the little courtyard with the stream running along the bottom. Very characterful cottage, but with enough crockery and pans to make self catering a good option. If you want to eat out, there is plenty of choice and the meals in the cafe next door were very tasty. A good base for both walking and exploring the caverns. Towels and linen are all provided. Bring along tea towels, dishwasher tabs and a bit of washing up liquid to see you through and you’ll be set. We really enjoyed our stay and could happily have stayed longer.

The cottage was well presented with the Christmas decorations very welcome, along with the kind gesture of a Christmas card, crackers and gifts from Ian (the owner). The huge stack of games were a huge hit with us and the facilities throughout were plentiful. We tried to get the fire going on Christmas Eve but there wasn't enough fire starter resources to get it going - sadly. Certain rooms of the cottage get very cold this time of year despite the heating being on, it was very chilly in the lounge and main bedroom. The underfloor heated bathroom a welcome bonus, the low doorways caught me out just the once, Ian, the owner does note in the welcome pack “you will at some point bang you’re head so take you time”, the foam bumpers came into their own, the galley kitchen is well equipped for any meal. However, we chose it as it was listed as having off street parking, and we even phoned to clarify this. In reality there is no off street parking. The owner provides a permit for 1 car to park in the public car park across the main road. This needs to be made clear in the listing as the neighbouring cottages and businesses are not happy about it, and any visitors with mobility issues would have problems.

  • "Very happy with our stay at Millstream."

It was comfortable, well decorated while still in keeping with its age, and had everything we needed. Right in the centre of Castleton (literally just off the main street) so it was only a minute’s walk from any shop, cafe, pub, restaurant etc. We especially loved the garden space at the back - it backed onto the stream (great during the heatwave!) and it was really private and quiet. A parasol is also provided. During the hot days we stayed out there all day! There were a few cobwebs out back, but that’s what you get when you stay in the countryside. The bedrooms were both decently sized with comfortable beds. Good bathroom shower. The owner had left a token bottle of prosecco as well as a carton of milk - thank you, this was a nice touch! The parking directly outside the cottage was a squeeze, so we decided to avoid the hassle and just park in the big visitor car park just opposite. There were always plenty of spaces here and the owner provided a “year round” parking ticket so we could park there and in other town car parks for free. We didn’t mind this at all and understood that in a town as small and busy as Castleton, it would be near impossible to find such a lovely and centrally located holiday cottage with its own designated parking space. Castleton itself was buzzing during the good weather - so many outdoor restaurant/pub spaces to choose from, an amazing bakery which sells the best sausage rolls and pies, and obviously plenty of walking routes nearby. Castleton seems to be the place to be! Would highly recommend Castleton and Millstream Cottage!
