  • "When I booked this Shepherds hut I didn't expect a hotel room or an apartment."

. I had read some negative reviews. Packhorse Shepherds hut is just what I wanted. It was clean, comfortable, the water was hot and everything worked. I stayed on my own with my dog and we had a great time. The owners asked if everything was OK ( it was) and made me feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend this, it is a very peaceful place to stay. Brilliant location. I left feeling like I had, had a proper holiday. Thank you.

  • "After reading some worrying reviews on Sykes website I was a little apprehensive."

However there was no need. I was made very welcome by Katherine and her husband. The shepherds hut is very private. Yes it is basic accommodation, but has a lot of charm and has been made as comfortable as possible. The bed was clean and very comfortable. The shower was a bit slow but did the job. Cooking facilities were limited but I had no intention of cooking anyway. There is a kettle, toaster and microwave which was all I needed. The fridge was in an outbuilding behind the hut, which I can see in poor weather could be inconvenient, but was fine with me. The decking could probably do with a coat of paint, but that for me was part of the rustic charm. The surroundings are perfect- lovely field for my you g dog, lovely walks around the fishing lake and woods. The resident goats were a joy. If you are looking for a break with rustic charm and to get back to nature, I would highly recommend the shepherds hut. If I had a criticism it would be that Sykes need to update their information- there is no Wi-Fi, which didn’t bother me, and tell people about the outdoor fridge.

  • "There were several negative reviews however like the last reviewer we went along any way as had paid for a weeks break."

Sadly the earlier complaints had not been addressed. There were cobwebs in the corners of the inside, the towels and tea towel did not smell nice at all. The bedding was old and did not smell clean at all. We struggled with the shower as difficult to control the temperature and the water pressure was poor, not enough for 2 people. The deck area had not seen any maintenance for who knows how long, it needs a good jet wash and a fresh coat of paint. There is no where to hang your clothes, there were only 2 pint beer glasses and one wine glass, we had to buy some tumblers. The fridge is in a shed at back of hut. With a bit of cash spent on a good clean, new bedding, curtains that are actual curtains, a jet wash, a fresh deck paint it could be lovely. We left after 2 nights as I couldn’t stay in a bed that felt so unclean. Sykes were very efficient at dealing with our concerns and speaking to owners but as we did not speak with owners directly to give them an opportunity to resolve we cannot have any refund. Nothing could have been resolved whilst we were in the property so there felt little point. I do hope therefore that they spend the 438 pounds we lost on improving the areas we and others have highlighted and as our complaint was ‘resolved’ by Sykes I would expect never to see another bad review here again. On a positive note the site for campers was quiet, the area lovely, peaceful and scenic.

  • "I read some bad reviews about this property, but thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt."

Unfortunately, the comments about cleanliness were very accurate, and hadn't been actioned. On arrival, I noticed hairs all over. The floor throughout, the shower, walls, windowsills and cobwebs in every corner. I decided to take my own bedding and towels, and thats the only reason why I stayed. If I hadn't, I would have left. On stripping the bed, there were hairs and marks on every undersheet (and there were 4 in different colours). I swept the floor with the hair ridden brush by the bed, but ended up using the dustpan and brush for more effect. No cooker and didn't dare use the microwave. Worktops, kitchen appliances and utensils needed cleaning before use. The positive was being able to sit on the balcony in lovely weather. If you have a caravan, really lovely place to stay and great dog walk in the woods behind. Its a real shame the owners don't look after this hut. With a thorough clean, some maintenance work, and fresh clean bedding and towels, this could be a lovely and cosy place to stay. I'm not the only one to have said this. Sykes need to resolve this issue now.

And hair in the shower . The bed linen was awful and cushions that also had seen better days . To much clutter and dust and cobwebs Curtains that did not fit the windows Shower was awful . Old manky bath mat full of stains .. shabby towels. Only good thing was the bed was comfortable. A broom left upside down full of hair and dust . Very dissatisfied The area they lived was very untidy Sorry people you were very nice and polite But this was rather expensive for 3 days And if you just looked after and took pride in the place this could potentially be a far better place to stay !

  • "Pictures are deceiving."

On arrival owners seemed friendly enough and gave us directions as is incorrect on Sykes website and on What3words. Fridge is located outdoors and was mouldy and not working. We asked the owners to look into fixing this but it never really seemed cold enough to be working. The bedding and towels smelled of damp and didn’t seem clean from the cold. The bedding was a mismatch of leftover bedding with several old quilts and nothing which was very inviting. There was mould in the shower which we had to clean on arrival and there were many cobwebs and was overall very dirty. Hot water comes out in a trickle and after one shower you have to wait overnight for there to be enough hot water again. We had food on the kitchen counter such as a cereal box and biscuits which were unopened which became damp with how cold the property was. There was an electric blanket and an electric heater but our clothes became wet in our suitcase located under the bed due to the damp. After two nights we left early as with the damp and mould and the fridge not working properly we didn’t think it was hygienic to stay. Really really disappointed in this property and don’t think it’s up to standard. Should be advertised as more of a camping facility rather than a holiday let. When we came home we found we were bitten by either fleas or bed bugs from staying at the property and have submitted a complaint to Sykes.

The hut itself is lovely but was let down by cleanliness issues and the shower. There were crumbs and dust in places so it hadn't been hoovered or deep cleaned as expected at the moment. The water tank feeding the shower wasn't adequate so the shower became cold after a couple of minutes. A lovely hut let down by a couple of minor issues.

  • "We found the accommodation adequate."

The only thing to suggest is that better bedding be provided. We had what looked like a child's unicorn duvet cover, a mix-match of pillow cases. The pictures on the sight for this listing doesn't really match with how the hut was layed out. Its great that there is access to a fridge, although this is kept outside the hut, under what looked like a small garage. Also, it was great that there is a shower in the hut, however the water starts off very hot without being adjustable, then gets colder until the small hot water tank empties just to run cold, this doesn't take long. These aren't complaints, just information for future customer. All in all, it was a nice break, apart from the weather, which was rain most of the time. As a side note, on our last day, I accidently broke a mug, which I am very sorry about. I left the only cash I had on me as a small token towards replacing it.

  • "The owners were lovely and the accommodation was as described in a great location."

However our big issue was cleanliness. On the 1st day I had to clean the bathroom as there were suspect marks. The floor didn’t looks like it had to been swept as there were bits all over the floor and in particular a lot of hair. There was also hair all over the towels, which I suspect maybe cat hair as I’m allergic. I also had to wash the cutlery and glasses again these were not clean. Especially in these times deep clean is needed. As much as the place was nice (other than the cleanliness issue) I don’t think It is worth the price but I do understand in these time all stay cations have increased their prices. I hope the owners do take action from this feedback as it’s a shame as all other aspects are great.

We are very sorry the cleanliness of the cottage was not up to your standards our previous feedback reflects how high standards we keep in this property. We can only apologize that your experience was effected by this and if you reported it while staying at the property we would have looked to rectify the issues at hand to improve your stay.
