  • "Absolutely amazing cottage, a “must stay” when you visit Castleton."

High cleanliness standards, has everything you need & is in the heart of Castleton with all local amenities on your doorstep as well as the stunning views across the Peak District. To top it off it’s also dog friendly, this is my second stay this year.

You couldn’t stay closer to the Peak Tavern if you tried and can even see it from the bathroom window! The cottage has everything you need for a break (make sure to bring logs and lighters) and is very well looked after. The owner was super helpful and responsive when we had an issue - thank you! We would love to book again.

  • "Property was not clean enough with cobwebs and surface dirt on surfaces."

Kitchen area cleaned before using. Damp smell in living area, had to air out on arrival, this meant leaving windows and half door open and whilst we unpacked our dog barked. The neighbour saw fit to come tell us off after only being onsite for 5 minutes so not a great welcome. The cottage location was great and the outside area works well. The stairs are treacherous and cottage like and the bathroom is modern with a nice shower. No obvious recycle facility onsite so bottles left for cleaner to recycle . Used the VRBO app to try and contact owner but got no reply, ended up phoning Sykes. Had a pricing discrepancy also where Sykes charged me more than the agreed price on VRBO and I cannot get this resolved so other renters should look out for this anomaly.

  • "The cottage is ideally located in a quiet area of Castleton."

The bed was comfortable and shower was powerful with plentiful hot water. The kitchen area was very well equipped. Our only disappointment was that the living room was very dark mainly because of the high hedge opposite. If this could be reduced in size it would make a huge difference.

I was a bit worried about being unable to park at the property but only a short walk to and from the car park and I can see that space in Castleton is at a premium! Very little working surface in teh kitchen and I would not have wanted to prepare a meal - luckily we always eat out on holiday. An enjoyable week (apart from the weather!!)

Easy access to everywhere but not busy, just people passing on foot to and from Peak Cavern. Parking is 200 yds away so manageable. The house is warm and cosy with everything you need for two people. Unfortunately the neighbour across the road has a 20ft laurel type hedge so it's not as light as it might otherwise be.

Clean and well kitted out for 2 people. The car park is literally a minute walk away and the cottage is only a few minutes walk into the main part of the village. Internet worked fine. Good location for walks. We had to take 2 cars due to location of work and the second car was parked in the main visitor car park for 3 nights and it only cost about £8 as I used the app. Would stay at the cottage again if we visited again.

The ability to stoke up the log burner was lovely on a cold evening although there was central heating so mice and warm. Bed and bedding was so comfy slept like a log. Would highly recommend fir anyone wanting a stay in Castleton, which was also amazing with great walks from the door and lovely pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops.

The Bed was very comfortable . There was fuel available for the Wood burner although we did not use it. The central heating system was easier to use. Castleton is a lovely town ,surrounded by incredible countryside. There are lots of nice pubs and restaurants which are Dog friendly within a short walking distance of the cottage. We were fortunate to meet Kevin on the last day and he is a lovely man who made us feel very welcome. We would certainly like to come back and stay again one day..

The bed was comfortable but the pillows were far too soft and flat and could do with some new ones. It was very cold weather whilst we were there and the cottage felt slightly damp. Because there is no wardrobe in the bedroom our clothes felt slightly damp to because we couldn’t fit all our clothes in the drawers provided. We did use the heating but this didn’t seem to make much difference. We used the fuel burner stove too. It would have been nice if there had been a starter pack of logs and things with it being winter. We left coal and logs for the next person/couple to use. The cottage is in a nice location and was quiet but I don’t think we’d book it again.

  • "Yes, the cottage and location was great, I think the description of the garden needs to be clearer that in fact there is no garden only a seated area across the small road."

This is important if you are coming with dogs as you cant just let them out. That said its lovely this cottage takes dogs. The other bug bare I have which really takes the shine off the cottage experience and it seems to now be a regular feature of Sykes cottages is advertising a log fire and not providing the fuel for it! Its an absolute pain, especially with cottages like these where there is no parking, to have to go and buy and lug your logs, kindling and firelighters up the road, especially if you are on your own as I was. If you are on a short break the last thing you want to do is trawl the local shops and spend an hour locating buying and carrying your logs for your log fire. I personally think its cheap and doesn't reflect well on the experience. The cost is minimal and I don't mind paying for over usage so my suggestion is either charge extra for it (its about £10 for 2 days worth) but at least supply a reasonable amount (more than 2 hours worth which is what we got here) for a 2-3 short day stay.
