  • "I've stayed at The Hill before, & always enjoy it."

It was a bit colder this year, so I had to put the heating on. I'm hopeless with anything technical, so I had a slight problem understanding the details that came on the small screen to control the heating. After 3 attempts, I finally managed to get the correct temperature, etc, & I put the heating back off in the morning. Everything else was fine, & I look forward to staying at 85 The Hill again, the next time I visit Cromford. (Jeff from Ayrshire).

  • "Grateful for starter pack very much appreciated."

Very well appointed with everything you would require for holiday. Having been at another cottage a few years ago we were aware that the stairs were quite steep. My wife is Partially disabled but with the carpeting on stairs and hand rail this made access to upstairs easier. Only slight drawback was shower over bath as hight of bath made it difficult for getting in and out of shower. But all in all an excellent accommodation within walking distance for amenities.

  • "I've stayed here before, & I always enjoy the cottage."

It's only a few minutes walk to the local store, pub, bookshop, etc. There are plenty of buses to places like Matlock, Bakewell, Buxton, Wirksworth, Derby, etc. I don't drive, so this is quite important to me. The facilities are very good in the cottage, & I'll definitely be back. I travel down by train every August for the books & music. Mr. J. Coulter. (Ayrshire)

Convenient location, no problem with car parking (roadside parking bay outside front door). Negotiating the staircase would be problematic for anyone with mobility concerns. Arrival instruction were good, and keypad access means you can get back into the property if you forget to bring a key out with you (!).

  • "This is a comfortable, well-appointed, and very good value property in a great location."

The cottage is an original 18th century worker's cottage, and is quite small, but very well laid-out. The living room is a good size, with comfortable sofa and a dining table for two. There is always heating available on demand from the fire-effect fan heater. The TV and Bluetooth speaker gives you access to all the TV channels, plus complimentary access to Netflix, which is welcome. The bedroom is a good size too, with a comfortable bed, and adequate clothes storage. The kitchen is very small, and has quite limited worktop space, but I found that it was well-equipped and actually had everything I needed during my stay. This included things like salt & pepper, olive oil for cooking, sugar, herbs etc. teabags and other small things that you don't normally think of bringing yourself. There was also fresh milk and butter provided, which was very welcome. I had a very enjoyable and comfortable week in this cottage, which also benefits from the excellent local bus services stopping right outside. There are fantastic walks to be had right from the front door too.

  • "We very much enjoyed our stay in a simply furnished but very well equipped cottage."

It provided a warm and comfortable base in a week of indifferent March weather. We very much appreciated the generous provisions which awaited our arrival. The Hill becomes very busy at times and is used during daytime by numerous lorries travelling to and from nearby quarries. However, this is characteristic of local industry and additional glazing to the windows largely eliminates traffic noise. An excellent bus service and walks from the door allowed us to leave our car parked at the cottage and to explore local trails eg the Cromford Canal & High Peak Trail, and other places of interest - a relaxing car-free week!

  • "The cottage was perfect for a couple and a great base for visiting family and local attractions."

Though the cottage is small there is very clever use of space so there is everything you need even a coffee pod machine. The owners left a few lovely homely touches which made us feel welcome too. I would highly recommend this holiday let.

  • "The cottage is very lovely, the owners have clearly put a lot of work into it."

There were some biscuits, wine, bread, butter and milk left, which was very much appreciated. A lot of very thoughtful touches throughout the house, e.g. charging cables left in the bed room and an automatic nightlight in the bathroom. Also, a lot of information about the area and the history of the cottage, which was very interesting and we found annual passes for the Cromford Mills, which unfortunately we didn't have time to use but very thoughtful! Unfortunately, the mattress isn't very comfortable and left us with stiff backs after two nights. As it is only a small cottage and there isn't a lot of space, the landing is a death trap in the night, you'll have to be careful not to fall down the stairs when going to the loo in the night. The shower is very small and water pressure wasn't very good. The cottage is right at the main road of the village and it was surprisingly busy, very loud during the night so we didn't unfortunately get the rest we were hoping for on our holiday. Over all, in terms of thoughtfulness of the owners one of the best places we've stayed, but for what we were looking for (relaxation and comfort) not quite right.

It was a simple cottage, but lovely and warm and we had everything we needed. We had worried a little about the noise from the road as a few people had commented on this in previous reviews, but we wear ear plugs and didn't hear a thing! A good base for walking and plenty of historical interest, Cromford is a very friendly place.

The directions & instructions provided were excellent & the detailed information about the history of the cottage very interesting. It's in a perfect location, with plenty of walks from the doorstep. Black Rock, Matlock Bath, The Heights of Abraham, Matlock & Crich are all walkable from the cottage, although there are also good bus & train links. Scarthin Books is definitely worth a visit & we enjoyed the hospitality of The Boat Inn too! Just be aware, if you are a light sleeper, that the cottage is on a busy main road.

  • "The property is not really meant for wintertime."

The back door was very draughty. In the summer this wouldn't be a problem. The hip Bath was very high, and my wife being small struggled to get in and out. Parking was hit and miss outside the property and would probably be worse in the summer. There was a street opposite you could use. All that being said the property was clean and had everything we needed and the owners very accommodating and we enjoyed our stay.

The only thing missing for me was an iron. Because I brought my clothes down in a wheely case& some in a backpack they were slightly wrinkled when I went to hang them up. An iron would have solved the problem for me. (Every brand of cooker has its differences, so instructions for the cooker would've helped). Otherwise, everything was fine, & suited me for the local Bookshop & musicians in the pub in the lane. I love Cromford, & have been going there for many years. Thanks for a nice break, & I'll be back in Cromford next August as usual. Mr. J. Coulter. Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. (Booking Ref' XG963489) 17th - 22nd August 2022.

There were a few kitchen things I missed, but there isn't space for everything. Downstairs is quite compact, but a good layout makes it all work; upstairs is more spacious. The roll-top bath looks good, but I would have found a walk-in shower more practical. Good Wi-Fi (about 30 MB download). The Amazon firestick and account on the TV were an unexpected bonus. A couple more photos showing that there really is a fridge, with freezer section, microwave and useful dining table would have been helpful in the web-site description. There is no dedicated parking; but there is a layby outside the row of cottages, which is open to public use. I had no problem parking during weekdays, but it was more tricky over the weekend. Cromford is ideally located for lots of interesting walks and spectacular views, with industrial archaeology in every direction. Overall, a great place to stay and excellent communications from the owners on my last-minute booking - thank you.

The cottage is in a very good location for access to many local attractions. You could walk to Matlock Bath (approx 2 miles), walk around the canal, around 4.5 miles. Also the bus stop opposite took us to Bakewell, so no worries about parking there. We ate at the Boat Inn, which was nice, but Cromford Tapas Bar was amazing! A bottle of wine on arrival was a welcome touch, after a long journey around the M25 and then M1, arriving after 7pm!! Also basic essentials such as bread, milk, marg and local biscuits!! My only comment would be stepping in and out of the traditional bath to shower may be a challenge for some. The village has everything you need within a few minutes walk, including butcher, general stores, an excellent pub, The Boat Inn and some bistro style restaurants and interesting shops, not to mention the historical Mills to visit.
