"We have just spent a lovely week in Galen Cottage."
100% recommend. Perfect location and a beautiful cottage. Lovely owners who clearly care. Welcome treats were really appreciated. The place was very clean and well cared for. Thank you

"Beautifully clean cottage in a lovely location."
Would definitely recommend.
-
"Galen Croft is an ideal cottage in which to stay for a break in the Peak District with walks from the door and centrally placed for exploring the area."
It was spotlessly clean, well appointed, quiet, comfortable and with hosts who could not be more helpful.
-
"Lovely property in a great location."
Handy for lots of the great places in the Peak District to visit.
-
"Another wonderful stay at Galen Croft cottage!"
We’ll be back again!

"We had a fabulous family stay at Galen Croft over the Easter break."
The cottage is in a beautiful and peaceful location with views of Curbar Edge (a good walk to do up the hill). It is charming and well-kitted out with everything you could ask for. The hosts go to a great effort to ensure your stay is comfortable and give lots of good recommendations for a visit to the Peak District. We would highly recommend a stay at Galen Croft and look forward to returning again some day.

"Needs hair dryer and toast rack, otherwise excellent, thank you Rodger."
Hairdryer and toast rack are now in the cottage. Thanks Paul for you valued input. Rodger Property Owner

"We had a lovely birthday stay in Galen Croft, thanks to the kind hosts who made sure we had everything we needed there as well as all the useful details."
The property was spotless, very well located for walks (including Curbar Edge and others from the doorstep), easy on road parking (some roads are narrow but nothing particularly tricky!), WiFi, central heating, hot strong shower, quiet & nice neighbours, etc. all great too. With thanks to Rodger and Judith - we'd definitely return!
-
"My partner and I had a wonderful stay at Galen Croft."
The house was immaculately clean and a fantastic base for exploring the Peak District with a local pub, shop and the fantastic Curbar Edge all in walking distance. The hosts Rodger and Judith couldn’t have been more accommodating and were quick to answer any questions we had. They offered lots of advice and recommendations and were very friendly. We would definitely recommend Galen Croft and stay here again!

"Everything about this cottage was 5star ."
Very helpful owner . Spotlessly clean . Very comfortable . Everything you need . Definitely be back .

"We thoroughly enjoyed our week staying in Galen Croft."
The walks and cycle rides from the cottage are superb - with super views from the edges. The Eating House cafe was a particular favourite nearby and the kitchen was very well equipped for family dining in. It is such a friendly village and we would very much enjoy another holiday here!

"This is a fantastic location with walks right out the door and a great pub a short walk down the hill."
I have read the reviews about parking but it is not an issue parking on the road. It’s tight but even the bin lorry had room past our car and there is a garage for a small car too. Cottage is comfortable bright and modern with a well equipped kitchen. It looks newly refurbished. It was spotlessly clean. Neighbours really friendly. Only issue is no Wi-Fi- I would rather pay a little more to have it just to research plans for the day restaurants etc.
Thank you very much Nigel for your positive and objective comments about the cottage and surrounding area, it is much appreciated. The WiFi issue is being addressed as of now. Rodger (owner) Property Owner

"The house is comfortable and clean with a good kitchen, lounge etc."
with all amenities. It is a converted stone terraced cottage. It is walkable to National Trust Curbar, Baslow and White Edges footpaths ((steep hill - footpath across fields rather than up hairpin road) and to Baslow (fields). There is no WiFi so we were dependent on mobile data for supper bookings (etc.), and the day a member of our party worked from the house. Parking is in Green Lane and is challenging as the lane is narrow with dry stone walls on both sides and neighbours' vehicles parked on 1 side of it. During our stay we were competing with the builders next door for space. The building works next door are substantial, and although the building noise was scarely audible from inside the house, it did impact our ability to use the garden on the 1 sunny day we attempted to do so. The garage is not suitable for a modern vehicle as the door is face to face with the neighbours' garage door at a distance of about 2m and we were not prepared to try to do so. We used it to store bikes and our bike carrier.
Ms T Thank you very much for your invaluable feedback which I appreciate very much and take all your suggestions extremely seriously, especially as it contradicts, in certain aspects, every other review previously submitted over the past four years. However, I feel I would like to respond and put all you have stated into some perspective. Thank you for for your appreciation of the cottage accommodation which I agree is almost accurate. I also concur with your appraisal of the walkability and close proximity of the three glorious Edges, Curbar, Baslow and White, that are easily accessible from the cottage. As the owner of the cottage I do contact all my guests, via a telephone call and follow up texts the day prior to their arrival, which I did with yourself, to give guests information regarding the cottage and the surrounding area. I have recently, however, included in my conversation to guests, the fact that our lovely young next door neighbours are having a small extension built to accommodate their two little girls arrival. The builders are not overly noisy, they are hardly ever there after half past three in the afternoons (guests are usually out and about during the day while the craftsmen are working) and they have been instructed not to park their one solitary vehicle in the space at the side of my garage that guests accommodate. A request which they have so far respected. The irony I find, however, of the criticism regarding your difficulty to park on The Green is this. I suspect that when arriving from a terraced house in an extremely built up conurbation like London, which is where you are from, it must have been a bit of a culture shock to find lanes and roads bordered by miles upon miles of classic drystone walling, a feature of the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, that are sleepier, narrower, quainter and less car populated than the roads you must be used to in the metropolis. So I therefore do sympathise with your comment of parking was “challenging” on The Green. However, I do not comprehend your statement that you “competed” with builders for spaces, who only have one van. I can imagine you surely must “compete” for spaces on the road in the area where you live in busy London. Remaining on the parking subject, it is a fact that all our previous guests have never had an issue with their own ability to park their “modern vehicles” safely, unlike your experience, either on the The Green or in the garage provided. A garage, which I admit, must have been built over a hundred years ago when there were not many cars on the road, as modern as todays vehicles, and quite possibly it may have originally been a stable all those years ago. But, I must point out, that the lady who lives next door, whose garage door is opposite to mine, does have the ability park her “modern vehicle”, in her smaller garage than mine, each and every night. This proves, therefore, that to park in the garage is not an unsurmountable problem for a driver with reasonable parking ability and spacial awareness. In essence, I presume a lady driver of a large “modern vehicle” who is more familiar to using wide open roads of the capital city as opposed to the quieter country back roads of the Peak District ought to possibly evaluate their own relative ability to park and consider the strength of their parking skills when negotiating a quiet Derbyshire lane such as The Green with its dearth of cars. I apologise for the lack of WiFi, and the inconvenience it caused, of which the problem is being addressed. Rodger Property Owner

"Lovely place, easy to get out walking both uphill and down."
-
"Really lovely cottage to stay in and in the perfect location too."
There are so many tourist attractions nearby making it very easy to visit from the cottage. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, the lack of WiFi was a slight issue however the 4G signal was strong enough to use. Rodger and Judith were thorough with any information or questions we had and helped us with the tight parking. The banana bread was also a nice touch! Overall a really great experience and would definitely come back again.
-
"The cottage was absolutely fantastic and is situated in a very beautiful area."
In addition, the hosts were very helpful and it was extremely easy to communicate with them. We will definitely be revisiting.
-
"We had a lovely stay at the cottage."
The hosts were easy to contact and quick to respond. The cottage was even better than we imagined, spacious and immaculately cleaned. The banana bread was also a delicious addition. Location is fab, parking a bit tricky to understand at first but a very helpful lady passing by pointed us in the right direction and I know we could have easily contacted hosts if we had any problems. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.
-
"The property was excellent, with very good facilities and space for two people!"
Car parking was a little difficult, and situated on a narrow country lane! However we managed fairly well! The owner was very helpful, and was available if needed to be contacted! Overall, a very enjoyable and pleasant stay!
-
"What a gem of a property!"
Beautiful views from a beautiful cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would very happily visit again!
-
"A thoroughly enjoyable stay at Galen Croft."
The cottage provides a high standard of accommodation with quality fittings and furnishings throughout. It was exceptionally clean, also very warm and comfortable and the log burner lit easily. Also a great location for walks and excellent food at the Bridge Inn and the Eating House cafe in Calver just down the hill. Unusually there is no hairdryer provided which is rather inconvenient particularly in winter and this should be made clear in the property description.
-
"Lovely & well equipped cottage, spotlessly clean."
Great location with lots to do and beautiful walks in the surrounding area. The owners were very helpful with good communication regarding access etc & the banana bread was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
-
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Galen Croft in Curbar."
It was a fantastic base from which to explore the beautiful area surrounding it, either a short drive away or walking from the cottage itself. Everyone we met in Curbar during our stay was friendly and welcoming, and we enjoyed walking down to the local pub 'The Bridge Inn' for a drink and a very good meal. We left on the Friday feeling that we still had things that we wanted to do, perhaps another time! Thank you very much for providing such a lovely property.
-
"The location of Galen Croft is excellent and we enjoyed our time in the quiet village of Curbar close to walks on Curbar and Baslow Edges."
The house is comfortable and very well maintained with an excellent kitchen and bathroom. It would benefit from more guide books and up to date brochures on events in the area. A couple of deck chairs would enable guests to relax in the garden. The lack of wi fi was a problem since we were on a two month trip from Australia but overall the experience was very positive.
-
"Another wonderful stay at Galen Croft."
The cottage is immaculate, clean and comfortable and the owners are incredibly nice and helpful. Situated just below Curbar Edge so great for walks, including along Baslow Edge and on to Chatsworth. Trying to work out if I can squeeze another visit in this year! Would totally recommend.
-
"This is a lovely cottage that is perfectly situated and is so tastefully decorated."
Rodger and Judith have done a great job! They are also the most helpful hosts you could wish for making sure everything went well-thankyou both. The banana bread was a lovely thought too! We would recommend this cottage to anyone without hesitation and we will no doubt be back ourselves!
-
"Utterly delightful."
Would certainly book again - (and pass on details to close friends if they wanted to stay in this area). Renovated to a high standard. Excellent contact with owner about access, etc.
-
"We had a wonderful stay at Galen Croft."
The communication from the owners was first class - as was the banana cake left for us. The house was beautiful and spotlessly clean. We couldn’t have wished for anything better. The walks (and climbing for our son) were fantastic. We hope to return soon.
-
"Really beautiful cottage, refurbished to a very high standard, and in a beautiful location just downhill from Curbar Edge."
I absolutely loved my stay there - my only complaint was that it wasn’t for longer! I will definitely be returning. (Homemade banana cake provided was also excellent!).
-
"Super base for walkers."
We walked every day from the cottage. Walked high on the Edges and down by the River.
-
"Beautiful cottage in a lovely location."
Great walks and climbing from the door. Lots of good places to eat nearby via a short drive or longer walk. We had a lovely time and hope to be back soon!
-
"Beautiful cottage with helpful informative owner."
Only minor observation was cold tap in bathroom sink was very lose and turned opposite way. Would stay again in a heartbeat!
-
"Fantastic, well appointed cottage."
Very clean. Comfortable bed. Easy to use kitchen. Very tastefully decorated.
-
"Second time we have stayed at Galen Croft."
Beautiful cottage in a great location. Every need possible need has been catered for. Very comfortable beds. Lack of WiFi not an issue as 4g signal is good here. A real home from home and a great base to explore the wonderful Peak District
-
"Location. Quiet and peaceful."
Security. Hygiene (spotless!). Contact with owner. Fabulous renovation. Quality fittings. All in a 5* category! Sykes cottages are expensive but you expect to pay for this level of quality.
-
"We had a fabulous week here, lots of walks from the house, we only used the car once."
The house was lovely, very clean and comfortable, we were left tea milk and a very tasty banana cake. Thank you so much for our amazing break, after 18 months of being at home we had a fabulous time.
-
"Fantastic cottage in a perfect location for two keen walkers."
The cottage has been refurbished to a very high specification, a spacious and comfortable home from home. Although no WiFi, this presented no problem as Internet access via our mobile data worked very well for general use.
-
"This is a beautiful house in a beautiful location."
It was a lovely escape for all four of us before the lockdown. We turned the phones off and actually managed to forget for a few days that everything was going on. We are very grateful to the hosts for giving us a warm welcome (over the phone of course) and some tips about the sights in the local area and we will definitely go back when we next get the opportunity. In fact non of us really wanted to leave! Sykes have also been brilliant after refunding our welsh holiday in full when Wales went on the firebreak, with no hassle whatsoever! and that encouraged us to have confidence to book this trip.
-
"Parking was not ideal as it was not an allocated space."
-
"Beautifully presented and very clean."
In a lovely village location and great spot to explore the Peaks from. Everything you could want from a holiday cottage. Would definitely recommend.
-
"Great location for exploring the area."
Walks available from the house with pubs and shops within a mile. Really good accommodation and owner keen to help with any queries.
-
"Absolutely brilliant, the booking process was easy and uncomplicated, we had contact from the owner a few days before to confirm the details and key location etc, the cottage is extremely well presented and very very clean, alomost like a show house !"
location is very very good as well within lots of nice walks from easy to shall we say a little more demanding, couple of decent pubs close by as well. Parking is a little tight at the rear of the cottage but really isnt a problem, Cant recommend this place enough, will def be going again.
-
"The service from the owners was excellent; phone calls beforehand* making sure that we we had all the information needed."
The accomodation was excellent, well resourced and thoughtful in the most beautiful location. Excellent secure storage for things such as mountain bikes and the most comfortable of beds. Can't wait to book it again and feel I will do so many times. * extra note regarding current (covid) situation. The booking was postponed twice and the owner kept us informed which was much appreciated.

"Galen Croft is a delightful property, in a quiet and picturesque village."
The owners have done a superb job refurbishing the property to a very high standard, with comfortable furnishings and a very well-appointed kitchen. The whole property was spotlessly clean, inside and out. I honestly cannot think of anything which the property is lacking. Prior to our stay, we also received a courtesy call from the owner, who clearly takes the enjoyment of his guests seriously, and he was tremendously helpful. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this as a property to visit, and I would certainly look to stay at this property again should we return to the Peak District.
-
"Brilliant location with walks abound from the door."
Pub which serves food is just a short walk down the hill but, you wouldn't want to wander far with the cosy log burner and brilliant cooking facilities. Comfortable beds, beautiful bathroom with an excellent attention to fittings and fixtures. Would we recommend, you won't be disappointed.
-
"This is one of the cleanest, well kept cottages we've stayed in."
The quality of the beds, furnishings are really excellent. Teabags, milk and homemade banana loaf was a very welcome touch on our arrival, the owner was very helpful before arrival and available if needed. The parking is at the edge of a narrow lane, against the side of the garage.
-
"Our stay at Galen Croft was so lovely, relaxing and peaceful and we wished we could have stayed longer."
The cottage has been fitted out to a high standard, was spotlessly clean, has very comfy beds and is the perfect place to stay to visit other places in the Peak District. The owners were very helpful and it was lovely to have tea, milk and scones left for us on arrival. Would definitely recommend this cottage. Julie and Mum

"Fantastic cottage, perfect setting for exploring the peaks."
Rodger was a great host and we especially enjoyed the home baked banana bread!
-
"Have been with you once before I think."
This place has been lovingly restored with great taste. Needs a few extra bits and pieces to make perfection which I will tell the owner about but it was comfortable and well appointed. Would happily go there again.
-
"We have stayed in various properties in this country and Galen Croft is an absolute dream of a property."
Its location was perfect for touring and despite it being not ideal weather we were able to still get around the area. The property was warm, comfy and lacked nothing The banana cake provided by the owners was worth the visit.
