  • "Lovely cottage ideally situated with easy access to many of the Peak District's attractions."

The cottage is really nice & cosy. good sized bedrooms, wet room and comfy Living room/Kitchen/Diner. The photos don't do the cottage justice, it's so lovely. Our two kids really appreciated the tour of the farm by Sue. Our eldest was extremely inquisitive and Sue was able to answer his complex questions! He enjoyed it that much he now wants to become a dairy farmer before becoming a game designer!! Location wise it is perfect, within an hours drive you can easily get to various places like Chatsworth, Hardwick Hall, Matlock, Sudbury etc. Although the cottage is on a working farm by a main road it was really peaceful throughout the day. Lovely holiday was had by all!

Dear Alexander Thank you for a lovely review, as you will have noticed I loved the inquisitive question time and hope I satisfied his interest, you have an ambitious son and he will go far but more engineering I would suspect. Hope to welcome you back soon Many Thanks Sue Property Owner

Took our disabled grandson for a short break and he loved it. We were right opposite the calving barn and were lucky enough to see a newborn calf on our second morning as well as plenty of older calves in the other barns. The owners are extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Only problem I had was i couldn’t wake up in the morning I was so comfortable. Thank you.

  • "We arrived at the cottage at 5 pm on Friday 28th June 2024."

Following the owner's instructions, we called her and she informed us that the key was in the door. Unfortunately, she couldn't greet us in person as she was at the hairdresser's. I had previously informed her that this trip was a surprise for my mom's 60th birthday, hoping for a special touch, but there were no decorations or even a note to celebrate the occasion. Thankfully, I had brought birthday goodies with me to make the celebration special. Upon arrival, we found no tea, coffee, or milk, which are typically provided at self-catering properties, at least a teabag and a splash of milk. Bearing in mind we are on a farm that keeps cows and calfs. The website and the owner had indicated that the property had a washer-dryer, but we only found a washing machine with no drying facilities—not even a drying rack. The weather wasn't great so I couldn't hang the washing outside. All washing was placed on hangers inside the property. This was particularly inconvenient as I had brought laundry with me, expecting to be able to dry it fast. For families with children, this could be a significant issue. Additionally, despite what was mentioned on various websites, there are no cots available at the property. None that was inside anyway. I took a shower on Saturday morning and although I put the bath mat down, I slipped on the floor grabbing a towel in the area the bath mat didn't reach. If this was my disabled mother, she would be in hospital right now. Fortunately, it's just a large bruise on me. Very dangerous. The WiFi at the property went down at 6 am and wasn't turned back on till 5:30 pm. During this time I asked the owners to fix the problem, which they didn't. I was met with a slammed door, 'I don't know,' and 'it's EE's problem.' I was also advised to 'get some fresh air,' which was an insult as my mum is on crutches and needs a walking aid being disabled, and this was very apparent when the owner suggested this looking at her in the property. This made my mum upset and self conscious. This is a disabled friendly cottage. I had to console my disabled mum after the owner left her upset. On her birthday. This isn't fair. We booked this property due to the cosiness and escape, to catch up and watch films, and have a girly evening. This wasn't met. We didn't want to go for fresh air as suggested. I had to work for a few hours in the morning online, which I wasn't able to, resulting in a financial loss for me. The location doesn't allow me to use mobile data. At 5:30 pm, a younger lady came to see us and told us that all she needed to do was reboot the router. It took her five minutes. The Internet was fixed then. Too late for work and too late for leisure. The whole day was wasted, and it's such a disappointment. We have sat around waiting all day. It's my mum's 60th birthday and was supposed to be special, and I had so many things planned. Let me be clear, the router needed resetting after maybe an hour or two which I suggested this to be done. Not 9/10 hours. It's not acceptable. I paid for this feature and this wasn't met. Obviously the owner's have to refund me on this. On Saturday evening, loud music was blasting from 9 PM until midnight. This noise disturbance severely affected our ability to relax, and more importantly, it prevented my mother from being able to sleep. We chose this property because it was advertised as a secluded and peaceful location, so we were quite shocked and disappointed by this incident. Additionally, the noise from passing cars was also very disruptive. With the windows open, the sound was even more pronounced, making it difficult to enjoy the tranquility we had expected. In light of these issues, I am requesting a full refund for my stay at Piggery Cottage. The property did not match the advertisement, and the customer service was poor. It did not meet my expectations, and I am highly disappointed with my experience. I hope you will take my concerns seriously and address them promptly. If this issue isn't dealt with, I will have to take this further.

Dear Laura, I am very sorry that you didn’t have the experience you hoped for whilst staying in our self-catering cottage, there was a series of unfortunate events that were outside of our control whist you were here. Firstly, I apologise that I wasn’t around much during the weekend, I was busy preparing for our own holiday which, when you are self-employed takes a lot of organizing for the business as well as getting ourselves ready. Secondly, our telephone line and mobile phone signals went down on the Saturday morning which caused the internet to also go down. When I returned, I did reboot the router but it was still off, I came round to speak to you to explain this, I was going out again so I asked my daughter in law to reset it as soon as she got home which she did. I’m sorry this was too late for your plans that day. You mentioned there was no coffee or milk but in our email exchange I did specify that we don’t provide these. We are legally not allowed to put our raw milk from the farm into the cottages and we don’t have any pasteurization facilities on the farm to enable our visitors to consume our milk. Usually if a guest requests for a surprise to be provided in the cottage on arrival it would be at their own expense. It’s not something we are regularly asked for but this is something we could perhaps improve on in future if we have a future special request like this. I did try to accommodate your requests by offering to lend you an electric hand mixer and cake tin if you required this. Thanks for pointing out that the Sykes website says we have washer/ dryer facilities we will speak with Sykes to see if this can be amended. However, I could have dried your laundry in my tumble dryer if you had asked. Guests can use the washing line in our yard just outside the cottage back door and on request we can provide a clothes airer. As you pointed out we do have a cot available which we provide on request if a child is staying. We do provide 2 bathmats to enable as much of the floor to be slip free as possible during a shower and the wheel in shower chair to aid less abled guests. Finally, the music you highlighted was a one off event about half a mile away and nothing I had any control over. Best Regards Sue Property Owner

Flowers was very welcoming. The property was well equipped and comfortable for the two of us. We stayed whilst it was warm so had no need for heating etc. The wet room had a decent shower and would be very suitable for a less able bodied person. The one thing lacking was a clothes horse for drying clothes. We stayed for two weeks, so did a little washing. Everything was clean with the exception of the living room carpet which could have done with a steam clean. We were well aware that the property was on a working farm and had no issues with the closeness of the cattle barn. Although there was not much to do, walks etc the accommodation is so close to many places of interest ie, Cromford Mill, Chatsworth, Bakewell, Stanton Moor stone circles, Arbor Low, Crich Tram Museum all within 30 min drive.

Thank you for your feed back, there is a washing line outside the cottage and pegs in the cottage and a small airer that hangs on the radiator but you must have missed it in the cupboard, I wish you had asked as I like to help where we can. We were very pleased to see the hand rails and the shower chair in the wet room. The arm chairs in the lounge, we’re not too low and had arms which helped him when he stood up. The furniture was sturdy so that he could lean on it when necessary, to pull himself upright. Our cottage was very well equipped, nice and warm and there was plenty of hot water. The cottage is very close to the High Peak Trail and Long Dale is a stunning, little-known valley, perfect for walking. There is cycle hire and mobility scooter hire at Parsley Hay. We enjoyed our visits to Hartington, Ashbourne and Youlgrave. It was fascinating being on a working dairy farm and the cottage is situated opposite the ‘nursery’. • "Cottage itself was comfy, WiFi worked etc."

Bed was very comfy. Kitchen well equipped, although there was a washer but no dryer and nowhere to dry clothes either. Our main gripe with this cottage however was lack of peace and quiet. The mooing cows were no problem for us, but one side of the cottage is on a noisy main road and on the other side is right by farm buildings with noisy extractor fans running 24 hrs a day, which prevented us opening windows and using the outdoor seating space. An old fridge freezer had been dumped outside near the front door. There was no introductory folder, in particular info for operating/switching off the heating system. Hartington is lovely but some miles from the cottage, in our view it is inappropriate to assign its attributes for this cottage. However the cottage is very well situated indeed for access to the cycle trails and also general driving to Ashbourne, Bakewell and Buxton are all not that far away.

  • "A very nice cottage indeed and very well placed for exploring the area."

We were made welcome. There is one issue that may be to do with the way Sykes lists pet-free properties, or it may be to do with how the owner has portrayed it: it appears on your web-site as pet-free, but in fact, as this is a property suitable for the disabled, it actually allows assistance dogs. While this did not affect us, it could well be a major problem for any visitor with severe allergies who is expecting to be visiting a pet-free property when in fact it may not be.

Old House Farm Cottages

A delightful group of cottages located in the hamlet of Newhaven, by the village of Hartington, in the Dove Valley of the Peak District National Park, an excellent base to begin your adventures throughout the season. Offering somewhere comfortable to return to, each retreat has been thoughtfully put together, so you can enjoy dining in style, and cosying up in front of the TV after an adventure-filled day. Woodburner-effect fires provide warmth on those cooler nights, with charming furnishings to set the scene. The bedrooms are each attuned to the feel of the cottage, your little place to enjoy some peace and quiet upon returning home. The hamlet of Newhaven, which is right on the doorstep, offers the Carriages Bar and Restaurant, serving a selection of local Real Ales and locally sourced wines, as well as a relaxing atmosphere. Try something from their tasty menu or just stop by for a refreshing drink. Steeped in history, this little hamlet is home to many old inns and farmhouses from different periods, and there are some beautiful walks varying in strength to suit all capabilities. A lovely village at the northern end of Dovedale, the village is set in some of the very best walking country including the high peak trails, suitable for off road cycling and walkers. Hartington's past wealth and importance is reflected in the impressive stone cottages and houses around the village square and many ancient routes and trackways still meet in the village. One of the most notable buildings in the village is Hartington Hall, now the local YHA. Dating back to 1611, the manor house still retains much of its original charm and is one of the most popular youth hostels in the Peak District, with a restaurant open to the public serving locally sourced produce. This village is surrounded by wonderful scenery with a network of footpaths radiating from it. To the south is romantic Beresford Dale, leading to Wovescote Dale and the famous Dovedale or venture north, in the Upper Dove valley on quieter paths to Pilsbury Castle and Crowdecote. All you need for a memorable getaway.

About the location

HARTINGTON

Bakewell 10 miles; Buxton 10 miles.

Hartington, situated in the Dove Valley in the Peak District National Park, was an important market centre in the Middle Ages, having been granted a market charter in 1203. Today the ever-popular village boasts lovely tea rooms, a cheese shop, old curiosity shops, traditional pubs and a splendid market square where the stone-carved village pump, once an important source of water for the villagers, still stands on the green. The local bars stock local ales brewed at the Leatherbritches Brewery in Fenny Bentley and Whim Ales in Hartington itself. The former Hartington railway station, about a mile and half from the village itself, is now a picnic area and the converted track is known as the Tissington Trail, popular with both walkers and cyclists. Hartington is also a good starting point for walking along Beresford Dale, a beautiful place with its curiously formed cliffs and rocks. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both within a 20 minute drive, and Alton Towers is within easy reach.
