  • "Disappointed with lack of internet connectivity, but managed when out during daytime."

Bed very comfortable and cottage cosy and warm. Host Mrs Morrell very helpful, she washed our dogs bed as she had been sick on the journey there. Unfortunately no washing machine in cottage due to lack of space. The sofa for us was not comfortable as too low and we struggled to get up, we both have back problems. Views over the Manifold valley gorgeous. Would happily return if a more comfortable sofa were available.

It was clean, tidy and warm when we arrived. We had everything we needed although we did struggle with internet connectivity and phone reception. Saying that we both found it quite liberating! Our 2 Labradors were very pleased with their bag of treats as were we with our welcome biscuits. The area is beautiful with lots of very local walks- we enjoyed the trails avoiding some of the mud!

  • "The cottage was somewhat tired and damp in places."

The shower did not function correctly and the mixer tap to the shower and bath needs replacing. The hot water system was rather antiquated and there was hardly enough hot water to have a bath. There was no hot water during daylight hours unless you overrode the timer. The towels provided were old and musty smelling. The TV seemed to have a mind of its own - some days you could get BBC and on other days not. The small garden was not particularly dog friendly as our small Border Terrier could easily jump over the wall.

  • "Thanks for a wonderful week so chilled and peaceful."

The cottage has everything needed for a relaxing break. Only thing we found is if you want to eat out locally then options are limited especially at busy times like Easter there are only 2 pubs, and they get booked up quickly. Both are in walking distance but a good hour by road, however we did get a taxi home on the couple of times we visited with just a small extra charge for the dog. There are lovely walks right on the doorstep and the view from the garden is to die for. The cottage is ideally located for you to just hide away or visit the many attractions the Derbyshire dales has to offer.

Bless you Gordon, loved having you both here and Duke of course. Your kind words are most welcome X Property Owner

  • "Second time in Manifold Cottage."

I love the peace and quiet. Didn’t like the battery air freshener noise as it kept walking me up and making me jump in the stillness. So I removed the battery. Only thing I struggled with was the amount of hot water for my shower as I have a lot of hair. But it wasn’t really a problem and I’m sure I could have remedied that if I could have been bothered. I love staying there for the quiet and solitude. May well be back, some day, if only to pat the horses. A quiet, solitary retreat.

Quiet and peaceful and wake up to a lovely view of the field and trees to the back of the cottage. Everything you need in the cottage and a working fan heater in the bathroom. There is a field for running the dogs safely just down the road which was great for us and our dogs loved it. We felt very comfortable in this location and the locals were very friendly and chatty. It is such a shame you got so lost on the way to the cottage and that you had such terrible weather, after all the good weather in June!. Our apologies also that we could not let you in earlier as requested, but we do need the time to turn the cottage around. Was lovely exactly what we needed and felt very welcome. The only thing which does not affect what a wonderful place and stay we had was would have been easier to park in front of the cottage to help with unloading things and save dogs going in and out to help with cleaning but that's just personal to me in the muddy weather. The cottage is very well placed for the Manifold trail ( excellent level walking for our old and struggling dog) and there was access to walks from the cottage. Leek is a really interesting town - we'd highly recommend the Heritag trail and picturesque Rudyard is very close by( more level walking). The cottage is well equipped and clean. The garden was perfect for our dog. The view was superb. Our only criticisms would be: low lighting in the living area made reading difficult; the heat of the shower was hard to control; and we never did manage to access BBC 2 and 4! Overall, it was fantastic value for money.

No Internet which was a godsend. we rely to much on technology, so it was also great to be somewhere without a phone signal as well. There are some amazing walks for dogs and the cottage supplied everything you could need for your stay for cooking with. There are Fresh eggs up the road at the local farm for £1.00 per half dozen which tasted so good. Ann was a wonderful host and was there if you needed anything and made you feel so welcome, she even supplied a proper pint of milk and a packet of Cookies but most important of all was the treats for the dogs. There is a small enclosed garden which you can sit in for breakfast looking over the valley and Ann's 2 ewes and 2 horses may come and see you over the wall. They are so comical and kept our collie entertained for hours. Thank you for letting us get away from it all to recharge our batteries, Julie, Paul, Guinness and Apollo. About the location

GRINDON

Ashbourne 10 miles; Leek 7 miles.

The delightful rural village of Grindon is situated on the side of the beautiful Manifold Valley, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Like its well-known neighbour the Dove, the Manifold cuts a course through superb scenery and is a delight for both walkers and cyclists, with the "Manifold Trail" following the route of the old Leek to Manifold Light Railway. Grindon itself is a pretty stone-built village, and close by is Butterton with a butcher's and a pub, whilst further afield is the market town of Ashbourne. The surrounding area has many pubs offering a good range of food and Alton Towers is just a 30 minute drive away.
