Warm and comfortable, with the exception of the lounge sofa that has tired seating which makes it slightly uncomfortable. That being said it's only a minor issue. Excellent location, walks from the door plus many other attractions / walks are only a short drive away. Thanks for allowing dogs, the garden is not secure having an open shared drive. Not a problem for us just something to be aware of. Overall a good cottage and a great holiday.

We have stayed in great longstone a few times now and this was one of the best cottages we have stayed in. The downstairs space is plentiful and gives the cottage a lovely homely feel. The bed was big and comfortable. We would absolutely stay here again and would recommend it highly to others. The location is brilliant for exploring the peak distract with plenty of walks from the cottage and places to drive to. We love the area so much as do our dogs. Most places in the area are dog friendly too.

  • "Great location and lovely village but there were a few aspects of the cottage itself which we were disappointed in."

The shower in the upstairs en-suite had very low pressure, the heat fluctuated hugely on it’s own and at times the water pressure was so low it wouldn’t work at all. The write up stated that there would be a starter pack for the log burner. This consisted of one log and some newspaper!!!! It was very chilly on our first couple of evenings but we were unable to light the fire as the promised fuel wasn’t supplied. There was an ant issue in the kitchen. They got into the food in the cupboards. The kitchen was rather short of equipment. Some Pyrex bowls and a measuring jug would have been handy amongst other things. The bathroom towels were small and definitely past their best. As this is a dog friendly cottage it would be nice to have a secure garden but the garden is open to the road and the shared driveway. Furniture in the sitting room not particularly comfortable after a long day walking when you just want to relax. Bigger bedroom could really do with a chest of drawers. Weeds growing everywhere just outside the cottage giving it a rather uncared for appearance. Outdoor furniture definitely needs jet washing. It was covered in moss and lichen. However, beds very comfortable with great pillows and quilts.

Hi Sarah , Thanks for the feedback , for certain issues it is better to call so the issues can be dealt with then and there , however post checking :- * The upstairs shower was checked and found to be in order , it could be a case of supply water pressure being low . * Speaking with the following guests we did find a couple of ants in the kitchen , which were removed , ant powder has been applied to a possible nest outside the property and ant spray and traps left in the boiler cupboard just in case they return as a preventative measure. * The kitchen is well equipped , comments regarding pyrex equipment noted and will address and review . * The bedding and towels are supplied by a third party Sykes recommended contractor , and are replaced at each changeover - Your feedback has been noted . * The lounge chairs were replaced in December 23 with new ones. * The driveway is a shared access with the cottage opposite , plus the walled boundaries border onto farmland where livestock are often kept , so although we do allow dogs to stay at the cottage , we would ask dog owners to be considerate and mindful when dogs are outside the property . * The gardens are maintained , the weeds edging the property have been removed . * There is a large sycamore tree in the garden that has produced quite a lot of tree sap this year , it has been a particularly wet start to the year . The sap has coated the wooden garden furniture . Progressive cleaning should hopefully remove the majority of this . Property Owner

We had to ask several local residents and we eventually found one who knew where it was and who told us she had been asked on more than one occasion. All that needs to be put is ‘You will find the driveway to the right of the Crispin public house’ Why has this not been rectified yet is beyond me. It was a bad start to our holiday. The cottage is lovely but as previously stated in the reviews and guest book, the lounge furniture is not comfortable. The bedrooms were excellent and good quality bedding. We had a wonderful time and the area is great.

A wood-burner starter pack (other than scrunched up paper) was missing. The overall impression is a lovely holiday cottage but on closer inspection it is revealed that the property could do with a deep clean: 1) windows absolutely filthy, 2) garden furniture black with deposits and unable to use, 3) grease filters in cooker hood visibly coated, 4) hob and ovens "sticky", 5) shower sumps and covers coated with residue and filled with hair, 6) venetian blinds sticky with dust, 7) still had dog hair on the indoor entrance mat, 8) the freezer was congested with ice (we left it defrosting). The living room furniture was very uncomfortable. Sofa too soft as it seems everyone uses it as the wing chairs are awful especially if you are short, I really couldn't sit in there. We were four adults and one dog on a walking weekend. The cottage and the location were just perfect. Great Longstone is a really beautiful village with walks from the door so there isn’t any need to drive anywhere. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. A large range cooker a sizeable fridge freezer and plenty of storage space for groceries. The bedrooms were very comfortable, it was lovely to wake up and look out over the scenery through the large windows. We had a meal in the Crispin pub the night we arrived and popped in each day for refreshments when we returned from our walks. It is a family friendly pub and they are very welcoming. The cottage is a 30 second walk from the crispin but don’t let it’s proximity put you off of the cottage as you wouldn’t know the pub was there, it doesn’t intrude on the tranquillity of the accommodation. The lounge carpet was covered in four legged friend hair. There is mould on the windows and on the bathroom walls and the shower in the small bedroom rarely got to temperature or pressure so a shower was a challenge! The parking is tight with the space at the entrance very difficult to get into/out of.

En suite shower was not draining properly so we cleaned out the plug hole which was full of hair, soap. 3. Dead flies on window ledges, multiple rooms. 4. Peanuts and debris under cushion on window seat. 5. Dirty finger marks on doors, looked like newspaper print. 6. Pull up blind on dining room broken it had a coat hanger holding it up. 7. The only slight quibbles were: The directions to the property were inadequate. Why do they not tell you to take the road which goes up the right hand side of the car park of the Crispin pub? We had to ask several people in the village where the property was. In the bedroom with the en suite there was nowhere to hang the towels. Because the door of the en suite has a glass panel, it would be difficult to put hooks on the door, so I can’t offer a solution to this.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Holmefield Cottage last week even though Storm Arwen sent challenges."

The cottage is cosy and homely and has a kitchen which is fully equipped - most helpful when you cook in most nights. When we say equipped - It had everything, from the most amazing Rangemaster cooker, a decent freezer (which is almost unheard of in holiday cottages), a microwave, to a garlic crusher and scissors! The beds are super comfy and the showers are great. The only thing we wanted to point out to the owners was that it might be useful if there were a couple of hooks on the backs of the bedroom doors to hang towels (admittedly we didn't notice the airer in the downstairs cupboard until the day we left) but thought this might be handy, and one other thing, we felt the leather sofas in the living room were a bit uncomfortable but shifting our position we made it work. This DID NOT dampen our enjoyment of the cottage however, we just wanted to provide this feedback to the owner. There's a great smart TV in the living room with Netflix and Amazon Prime and a warming log burner too. Funnily enough we didn't use it even though it was sub-degree temperatures outside because the heating in the cottage was so effective. Storm Arwen gave us gales, snow and ice and the owners kindly popped by to shovel away the snow and ice from the drive which made walking down the hill a bit easier and safer. We absolutely love visiting Great Longstone with its picturesque village setting, its great pubs (some of which serve veggie and vegan options) and its lovely walks and trails straight from the door. The Monsal trail is accessible about 1 mile away through some fields and a must for explorers. The cottage's garden is useful for when you have a dog and we would imagine it would be a nice space to use during summer. All in all, Strom Arwen aside - we had a really great break and loved Holmefield Cottage. We recommend this cottage to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday where they can re-charch their batteries in a wonderful Derbyshire village.

  • "The house itself is good and generally clean and comfortable."

Very uncluttered which is great for dogs and for bringing your own stuff. What you are not told is that you are potentially totally overlooked by another house that not only shares your parking area but has a right of way immediately past your outside seating area. Luckily at this time of year we were not outside and the other house was unoccupied. Also, a warning for dog owners, the garden is not at all secure. The entrance gate is off its hinges (and looks as if it has been for many years) and your dogs could run into a pub car park or fairly busy road if you don’t supervise them all the time they are out. There was no “starter pack" for the log burner as promised, the dishwasher still empties into the washing machine as noted by a previous guest and, also previously noted, the frying pan is not fit for purpose. We had to go out and buy our own. There was no fish slice either so getting things out of the frying pan was a challenge. You can generally tell whether the owner has ever stayed in the cottage by the standard of fixtures and fittings and I suspect that they have not in this case so little niggles like extra hooks, bedside tables and the range of cooking utensils all grated a bit. We had to use head torches to read in bed. We appreciated the fact that it was not brimming over with instructions but it might have been worth telling guests that there is a major issue with refuse collection currently. Also, if you do not provide food waste and recycling facilities at the house e.g. food waste caddy and a kitchen bin arrangement that allows you to separate items for recycling we are not going to spend our holidays working it out and that means it all goes in one bin. We did leave it as we found it, with a rather dirty cooker/oven.

We couldn’t even put it out for the binmen as there were no instructions in the cottage to say which bin collection was due while we were there. The kitchen is so incredibly well stocked with excellent appliances and good quality crockery etc. The decor is lovely throughout and the furniture is comfortable and attractive. The beds are super comfortable. It’s lovely and warm, central heating and a log burner. Ideally situated in the heart of the village and next door to an excellent pub. I heartily recommend this cottage

  • "Holiday & Location - Having visited Great Longstone before we knew the local attractions, walks, pubs etc."

that we wanted to go to. The White Lion and The Crispin in the village are both very good, and the Bulls Head in Ashford in the Water only a short footpathed-walk or drive away. - Lovely walks over the hill into Bakewell (convenient bus stop as an alternative), also longer walks along Monsal Head & the river to Millers Dale (Anglers Rest pub recommended) and across Longstone Edge to Eyam (Eyam Village Tearooms very good) - Derwent Reservoirs were only an hour's drive away - but busy, for us the local walks were the highlight of our visit. Cottage Furnishing and equipment were all high quality, very smart & comfortable throughout. Excellent shower, comfy beds and good wifi - the key essentials! Quirky cottage layout - a floorplan would have given us a better sense of what to expect. Also a diagram of the allocated parking spaces as they weren't obvious - we worked it out but one was too cramped to use.

Fantastic location and good facilities. Would be happy to come back. Only comment is the directions to get to the cottage could have been a bit clearer.
