  • "Another lovely stay at Pine Cottage for the Well Dressings."

The cottage suits us very well, especially when we have good weather and can enjoy the terrace. It is absolutely wonderful, on a June evening, having a drink, enjoying the view, and watching the birds overhead. We find the beds comfortable, though we bring our own pillows, and now that light-blocking curtains have been added we sleep well. The kitchen has everything we need. We cook Sunday dinners in there. The front room is still lacking in comfort not provided by the large number of cushions that have appeared but we’ll book again, for next year, as the positives outweigh all that. It is super clean and housekeeping contacted us this year to ask how we wanted the beds which was appreciated. We were also very pleased to be allowed to stay for an extra night at a very reasonable cost. Thank you.

  • "All the above star ratings are satisfactory."

We found Pine Cottage to be adequately provided within the confines of an intriguing and cramped old cottage having character common to this unique and fascinating village. There were two of us - a party of four adults would probably find it short on space, especially in wet weather. I notice (review Dec 2023) the toilet seat broke. Its replacement was loose and flimsy, and broke again. I purchased and fitted a sturdy replacement. Both kitchen and bathroom would benefit from additional lighting above sink and washbasin respectively. The lovely view to the South is disappointingly marred by failed double-glazing units. Thank you for our holiday. Dennis & Glenys.

  • "I looked at the previous comments and agree that the kitchen is well stocked and the patio and view from the back are stunning and we very much enjoyed our visit."

However, as mentioned in previous feedback, there were still cobwebs in the bedrooms and a lot of dust behind the beds. My daughter and I both have Asthma and we were coughing much more than usual and my other daughter was sneezing a lot. It is misleading to say there is a gas fire when it is only decorative - what is the point of it? - however the heating system was excellent and there was always hot water. Also, the toilet roll holder and toilet seat were broken when we arrived.

Thank you for your feedback and I am thrilled that you enjoyed the wonderful views and found the kitchen stocked well. We were at the property ourselves a few week prior and all areas were thoroughly cleaned/hoovered including behind the beds. We are sorry if some dust or cobwebs had arrived in the period just before your stay, it is a character property in a rural area but the cleaning team do check those areas regularly and we will certainly ask the cleaners to double check that area again straight away. Any maintenance will also be immediately addressed if we are made aware and we do give out our property team contact numbers pre arrival to reassure guests that any help needed can be actioned as soon as possible. The gas fire is indeed decorative only and the advert points were updated in 2021 to reflect this, as we have fantastic central heating. As it was part of the room decor we chose to leave it in situ rather than have an empty space. Property Owner

  • "Our fourth visit to Pine Cottage so obviously we love the cottage, village of Youlgreave and it's closeness to the beautiful area of Derbyshire we love to visit."

The new patio was a huge bonus as even in October we & our Jack Russell enjoyed sitting outside on four days. Only slight niggle I managed to put out recyclable waste by front door for Thursday collection rather than suggested a local skip run a few miles away. Understand its hard in terrace houses, but a bit more information on what goes where would be helpful. Looking forward to 5th visit next year.

Thank you so much for your comments and glad you and your Jack Russell enjoyed another return visit, especially with the new patio. We do always very much appreciate if guests take their recycling to the local skip while out and about as doorstep collections are not possible due to it being rural with rural variable collection days, but if that has not been possible our cleaners would remove any separate clean recycling waste on changeover. Thank you also for the top cleanliness and maintenance scores, much appreciated as we our teams works hard to ensure the property is at its best for guests and we look forward to you coming again for visit no 5 next year. A real sun trap from the rear, but could do with a bigger parasol...it didn't have a base either. We really enjoyed it but unfortunately the whole cottage smelt very strongly of dogs. We're very sorry but we had to use the bed throws on the sofa because it stank & we didn't want our clothes to smell. It was very off putting...great to take your dogs on holiday, but don't let them lay on the furniture. We found a fabreeze spray, but there was very little in it & there wasn't any cleaning sprays or domestos in the cottage, unlike last time. Thank you for the extra cushions but it didn't make the sofa anymore comfortable, it needs a new one. The bed is firm but we managed to sleep well...when it cooled down! We really would like to stay again, but please sort out the dog odours.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We're sorry you couldn't locate any cleaning spray, as there is usually one in the kitchen. We appreciate beds are subjective and personal preference but are glad that you still managed to sleep well. We are looking at replacing the sofa, in the near future. Regarding dog odour, thankfully this was an isolated incident and although it is already Sykes policy that pets cannot go on furniture we will remind guests of that moving forward. Property Owner

  • "We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pine Cottage."

It had a lovely cozy feel to it, a well stocked kitchen, and an adequate bathroom. The views though were outstanding, with a lovely patio area to sit & eat, or simply just to sit & relax. The outside tap was an added bonus to clean the walking boots at the end of the day. Also the parasol provided, which you don't often get, will be very welcome in the warmer months as I'm sure the patio will be quite a sun trap. It's great to have a parking space right outside too. Our only bugbears really were the sofa not being very comfortable. At the end of a long walk, you need something to sink into ...that sofa wasn't it! The bottom sheets on the beds don't really fit the mattresses & could be of better quality. We were surprised the cottage didn't have a proper shower, but in fairness we still had good hot showers regardless. The cleaners missed quite a few cobwebs here and there & under the bathroom sink left staines where the cleaning products are kept. There was a slight smell of dog briefly but not too bad. It would definitely require a regular deep clean. Little things, little improvements. We have certainly enjoyed our stay here , so much so, we've booked again and hopefully we'll have a little less rain. Thank you!!

We are so glad to know that you enjoyed your stay at Pine Cottage! Thank you for the lovely feedback. We will look to add some additional cushions to the sofa for that extra bit of comfort. Regarding the bottom sheets, apologies as this was a mix up with our housekeeping, we will raise this with them to ensure the correct sheets are being used going forward and pass over your other comments. We love that you have booked with us again! We look forward to your next visit. x All the best. Property Owner

Directions accurate. Entry by key safe. All clean and tidy on arrival. Lovely location, quiet, we were not disturbed by the neighbours. The village had great amenities despite its small size. We were quickly on a footpath and could walk to the river from the property. There was additional parking available in the village car park. The property had all the basic amenities we needed. The instructions asked us to take our recycling waste to local recycling centres however we could not find the one mentioned in Bakewell. Oven gloves and tea towels were provided and there was also a DVD player and selection of games which were not mentioned on the listing so that was a nice surprise. Excellent value for money, but not a luxury stay.

Thank you for your feedback. The cottage is self catering, however when you arrived, you had been provided with a welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar and milk. With regards to cleaning products there was washing up liquid, hand wash (in both kitchen and bathroom), toilet cleaner, cleaning sprays in both kitchen and bathroom, and also a toilet roll. The village shops, which supply many basic needs, were open on both the evening you arrived and the following day . This time it was very tired and dirty with the added bonus of a big gas pipe running right though the living room the fire was not working last time and wasn’t this time either . There was dog poo in the back yard and the patio table had wet slushy bread on it that I had to clean up. There was a constant squeak coming from the gas meter that got annoying. The village and the views were still amazing but unfortunately we will not be staying at Pine cottage for a third time.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. We are sorry that previous guests had clearly not cleared up after their dog and left crumbs on the table outside. If there had been other general issues relating to cleanliness, the housekeepers (whose number you were given)would have been able to resolve things. With regard to the gas pipe and gas fire, the central heating was upgraded last year and is now a very efficient system that heats the cottage quickly. There is no longer any need for a gas fire as all the rooms have individual thermostatic controls. The copper pipe is running against a beam on the ceiling and whilst functional, we do not feel it is unattractive. We are sorry that this bothered you. Property Owner

Had an unhappy experience which was handled awfully by the agents (not Sykes) and owner for the cottage. I would not recommend this cottage because of this. The description and joining instructions have been inaccurate for over 14 months. There is no gas fire. It is just there for show but doesn’t work. Doesn’t look like there’s an intention to replace it. We won’t be returning to the cottage even though Youlgrave is a wonderful place to stay. Hugely disappointed

  • "This was our second visit to Pine Cottage."

We really love staying there and will do so again. Any criticisms are minor, as it’s very tidy, unfussy, clean and comfortable and suits us very well. It’s the patio and the view from the patio that is the big sell, as is the option to take a pet. Sitting out there in the evening, listening to the birds, and admiring the view, is a huge pleasure. It’s still safe for pets though since the patio has been updated and improved, the area is barer, with less planting. (There are now a couple of gaps that a little dog, unsupervised, might wriggle through.) We did also miss the plants and thought a few bushes might soften the harder garden features? I suppose upkeep is the thing. It’s still a lovely, calm, surprisingly private-feeling space. The light still streams in through the east-facing bedroom window at dawn. We were prepared and had popped a blanket over the curtain pole. A light blocking blind or curtains would solve the problem. I think better quality bed linen and kitchen equipment would be great, but we understand it’s a holiday cottage. Everything you need is provided and it’s all absolutely fine. I will be booking again for next year’s Well Dressings.

Many thanks for the top cleanliness score and excellent comfort and facilities scores etc and for acknowledging the patio improvement. We will out blackout lining on curtains, thanks for the suggestion. Property Owner

It was comfortable for 2 people but would have been a bit cosy for any more. Just enough hot water for both of us to have a bath (there is no shower). I assumed due to the pictures that the cottage had a double bed in each room, but missed the fine print saying you had to specifically ask for that, so that was a bit annoying. Also, being a pet-friendly property the living room has a pretty strong odour of dogs, and there is quite a lot of animal hair throughout - the carpets could really do with a deep clean. The back terrace was lovely, overlooking the hills and south-facing so got good sun all day. Would be even better if it had a BBQ or brazier for evenings. There is a wild swimming spot in the village and lots of good hikes nearby. The wifi was a bit of a hassle but we didn't really care, being on a break from the city :)

These really were the most uncomfortably experienced and not ideal after busy hectic days when wanting to just relax in comfort (In fact we used two of our folding camping chairs as they did the job better!).
