  • "The cottage itself excels in every aspect."

Its location is quite remote which leads to some restrictions to phone and television usage - welcome positives for some - and nearby roads are narrow. It is in walking/cycling country and in easy driving distance of the Peak Districts's towns and attractions. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Swallows Barn.

The cottage is beautifully furnished and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. It was spotless and well equipped. The area is gorgeous and there are many walks you can do from the cottage. Red Lion in Litton is a lovely pub with great food, as is the Anglers Rest in Millers Dale.

  • "Area scenic and very beautiful."

Next to a working farm, great to see sheep and cattle from the kitchen window. Quality mattress and bedding although felt as if lying on a hill - the metal support underneath? A good break from the Internet and no phone signal. When staying another time, would take games, books and dvds as there are none at the property. Oh, and extra towels!

Hardly a comfortable country holiday home. It was surrounded by cow manure everywhere , huge heaps of cow manure extremely close to the cottage, in a very isolated area, tiny dark dirty windows you could Hardly see through. Absolutely nothing like the description. No response from Sykes to my many phone calls and messages whatsoever, just took the payment and disappeared. It was supposed to be a peaceful, relaxing holiday break after my cancer treatment, disgusting treatment by Sykes Cottages towards two old age pensioners, they should be ashamed, over £1000.00 pounds in their pockets for Absolutely nothing. Do not use Sykes Cottages. From Barbara Bailey

  • "Perfect; is how we would describe our experience at Swallows Barn."

Google maps took us within 20 yards of the property and once we were settled in we wanted for nought. The property was to the highest standard of cleanliness. One of the reasons we chose it, was for it's wood burning stove but we never used it, as it was cosy enough on the standard heating settings. (Wet and windy May visit) It had plenty of space for both of us with two sizeable bathrooms and a bath that could easily accommodate my 6'6" frame. The bed was big enough for me and we both slept very comfortably. Highly recommended!

We really enjoyed the stay there as it felt very homely, warm and hopefully we like to come back to visit sometime. There is everything you need in the kitchen to be able to cook properly if necessary. The views are amazing around the cottage and with lots of plenty walks around the local area, you Will need a car for some places. There is no Internet at the cottage but that was okay as we wanted to get away for a lovely quiet week away and do lots of walking! • "We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Swallows Barn."

We found the cottage to be very clean, comfortable and well appointed. The owner even came to visit us midweek to check we were ok as the weather had been so stormy. The central heating was very efficient and kept us toasty and warm and in the evening we lit the log burner to add some extra heat and comfort. There are numerous walks and cycle rides in the immediate area which is perfect for us, including the famous Monsal Trail on your doorstep. There was a pile of leaflets and walk suggestions in the cottage which were helpful and certainly helped us to plan our day's activity. We only visited one pub to eat during our visit, The Packhorse Inn, which was superb, although make sure you book as it's not huge and gets very busy. We would have no hesitation in recommending Swallows Barn and hope to be back again ourselves to investigate the walks and places of interest that we didn't have time for during this visit!

  • "The cottage was spotlessly clean and very warm and cosy."

The kitchen had everything you need for holiday meals and a dishwasher, always a bonus when away. The fact it had a bath was really nice, as there is a fashion for shower only bathrooms in holiday properties and I love a long hot bath after a day on the damp hills! Couldn’t fault the position, walks from the door and very central for Castletown, Hathersage, Bakewell, Buxton and Tideswell. We mainly walked but Haddon Hall (excellent and very reasonable cafe) and Buxton on rainy mornings were close by and allowed for walking later on. I would recommend the very interesting Old House Museum behind the church in Bakewell. Note, there really is no signal at the cottage, so for weather forecasts etc, make sure you get them before going back for the evening. Also bring a pack of cards etc for entertainment as none at the property.

  • "Positive comments: Mrs Holland was there when we arrived at 5 pm."

We chatted and she is friendly. There was a welcome gift of milk, biscuits, tea, coffee and sugar. Also a pile of leaflets etc on the area and helpful folder about the cottage. Oil fired CH when needed. Heated towel rails very useful. Clean towels in kitchen and bathrooms. Clean bedding on bed. The house had been left in a cleaned condition. Bins emptied. We liked the rural setting. Generally v peaceful. It was interesting watching the long herd of cows pass the cottage. We loved the mothers and calves in the adjacent field. One calf had just been born and the cow was licking it. We watched twin calves suckling another mother. We did not need it but saw a Tesco van arrive with a delivery next door, so it could have delivered to Swallows Barn . Suggestions for improvements : In the upstairs shower room: The moveable panels on the small shower cubicle were not easy to close properly. The toilet seat needs to be more firmly secured as it regularly slid sideways when sat upon. The carpets downstairs were vacuumed but showed some dirt stains. (but the tray for mucky footwear was a good idea- it just looks like some previous occupants forgot to use it?) The carpet in the dining room bore several dirty boot prints. Deep cleaning would be needed to shift these. They were there before we arrived. The sofa had useful cushions but we felt it was a bit too soft. WiFi in the property would have been useful. The phone signal usually ok by the entrance door. We did not get to use the ploughman table in the back garden, but think it might look better for a sanding and restaining? Loved the little scented rose bush and the pots of pretty flowers. Our greatest disappointment was the bed mattress. We think it is some kind of memory foam. When you first lie on it it feels ok. No lumps etc. However we both found that after lying for a while you sank into hollows and given the humidity of the July nights we both became uncomfortable due to perspiration. Recommend a change of mattress to a different type? The cottage has a lot of good features, if the above were corrected it could so easily be perfect. I hope these suggestions will be helpful. Janet Lancaster

Well where do I start!! To begin with, there are no areas in my cottage needing deep cleaning. It is thoroughly cleaned on every changeover. The marks on dining room carpet are where some very careless guests couldn't be bothered to get out the ironing board and used the carpet instead! They are scorched iron marks!! The shower door closed perfectly before you arrived and when you had left? The picnic table outside is rustic and in keeping. It doesn't require sanding. I admit it is getting ready for staining due to the heat earlier in the year and the torrential rain we have had but it's usually done before winter when there are spare weeks for maintenance. The mattress is a difficult one as the last person to comment thought it was very comfortable, also the weather was much warmer then? You just can't suit everyone with mattresses. I have wi-fi at home which is very hit and miss and very frustrating. It would just be the same due to being very rural. Property Owner

Large bed but unfortunately it's spoilt by a very uncomfortable mattress, also the sofa is very uncomfortable and badly needs some large cushions to help the situation. After walking all day you desperately need a good bed and sofa. It's a top top cottage otherwise.

Thank you for your positive feedback but very disappointed you found the mattress did not suit you. It is a memory foam mattress, which I thought would suit most people. I have had good comments on it but it is difficult to suit everyone. The sofa has loose cushions on the back which do need plumping up regularly. There is nothing wrong with the frame or springs. It is as it was when new. I have added two extra large cushions as you suggested. Property Owner

Important at all times but even more so with Covid. I took my own anti-viral wipes meaning to wipe down surfaces as soon as we got there, but I never used them it was so obviously clean. It's absolutely ideal for a couple and has much more room than you would think from the photos. Everything is tastefully done. We used the kitchen every night and everything we needed was there and so clean. The cottage is in a very small hamlet, about 10 other houses. It is right beside a dairy farm and the daily cow marches happen right beside you, we loved this aspect. Milking did start very, very, early! The cottage is down a narrow lane but this is very short and there are passing places so no worries for nervous drivers such as myself - we never met another vehicle all week. We enjoy self catering and the kitchen was good for this. We were aware that the cottage does not have WiFi but this was not a problem and helped us to ‘get away from it all’. Mobile signals are just a few yards up the road if needed. The cottage is in a great location for walking directly out into the beautiful Dales, or driving short distances to other good walks. It is spacious and relaxing inside and the paved small garden is fine too. We used our own camping chairs as well as the picnic bench. The local village had all the amenities we wanted. It was cosy, clean, comfortable and equipped with everything you could possibly need. The rural location was excellent with great walks starting from the front door. We had a wonderful week and are hoping to return next year.

  • "We had a wonderful holiday in the Peak District."

There is so much to see and do that we will definitely be returning. Our cottage was charming - very clean and well presented. We enjoyed being on a working farm and there were sheep and lambs in the field just behind the cottage.

  • "Sue, the owner, is very thoughtful, sensitive and the cottage is spotlessly clean and and has all the facilities one could wish for."

It does not have wi-fi which is a good thing, as that means you get a break from computer-dominated life. This is an ideal location for walkers like us, being near the Mosal Trail; it is possible to access some good walks without necessarily using the car.

  • "The cottage was immaculate, had everything we needed (and we cooked every day), wonderfully cosy and the walks available from just outside the cottage are very pretty."

We would definitely go again, the weather was not great but it didn't stop it being a special place to be. Many thanks for a fantastic holiday!

About the location

CRESSBROOK

Tideswell 3 miles; Bakewell 4 miles.

Cressbrook is located on the River Wye and its focal point is the wonderful mill, which was built in 1779 by the famous Richard Arkwright. The surrounding area has some of the prettiest scenery in the Peak District. Follow the footpath upstream of Cressbrook Mill to Water-cum-Jolly, a beautiful river gorge with fine limestone cliffs, which is superb for rock climbers, birdwatchers and walkers. North of the mill lies the lane to Ravensdale, which is adjacent to Cressbrook Dale, a fine gorge-like limestone dale with numerous crags and the remains of several lead mines. Cressbrook Dale is a National Nature Reserve renowned for its range of rare flowers. South of the mill you pass through the lovely Upper Dale and Nether Dale leading up to the famous landmark of Monsal Head, which is on the Monsal Trail. This provides a wonderful “behind the scenes” view of this beautiful part of Derbyshire. Close by is the lovely little village of Litton, which has a village green outside the wonderful food-serving pub, The Red Lion, and a well-stocked village shop. Visit nearby Tideswell in the heart of the Peak District National Park with its fine church dedicated to St John the Baptist, known as "The Cathedral of the Peak", country inns, local eateries, wells dressing and carnival wakes. There is excellent walking with rugged peaks to the north and gentle hills and dales to the south, while Mam Tor and Castleton are only a few miles away with the popular Spa town of Buxton a 25 minute drive.
