The cottage is perfectly equipped and furnished for guest stays but is welcoming and homely at the same time. The terraced garden is very pretty with views over the valley and surrounding countryside. The hosts are always available and helpful and have provided everything one could need. We have just returned from our fourth visit and the fifth is already booked.

Thank you for the fabulous feedback. We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed the garden and views during your summer stay at the cottage. We look forward to welcoming you back again later in the year. Property Owner

  • "A beautiful cottage in a pretty village, on the whole we throughly enjoyed our stay and were utterly charmed by the cottage even with it's plumbing quirks!"

When we arrived the cottage was generally very clean but we did notice the tiled areas in the bathroom could have done with a deep clean as there was quite a bit of build up on the grout. The plumbing as I have mentioned is a unique system to say the least and to some extent we could appreciate this goes hand in hand with an older property. Having said that there are some issues that do need attention, the upstairs toilet doesn't always flush properly and in order to have a warm shower it was necessary to run the hot tap first to get the boiler to kick in. Also if a tap was turned on or a toilet flushed elsewhere in the property the shower flow reduced to nothing and was freezing. The property owner did message half way through our stay to ask if the shower was working properly but by then we had managed to work with it and did not want our stay disturbed by an engineer. I would add that if the owner was aware of issues with the shower then it would have been nice to be informed before we arrived. The property information was also very limited, we couldn't find any instructions for the property appliances, including the heating. There was also no landfill or recycling bins outside which meant we couldn't empty the internal bins during our stay. All in all we were very pleased with our visit and would be delighted to return once the plumbing issues have been rectified.

Thank you for the feedback and apologies we weren’t able to get an engineer out before your stay but we weren’t made aware of any issues until changeover day. A plumber has been to the property and I understand that all has been rectified. Hopefully we can welcome you back at a future date. Property Owner

Only one drawback the shower wouldn't keep hot.! If that was fixed it would have been perfect.

  • "Hill Cottage is a lovely, traditional Peak District cottage set in the tranquil village of Winster."

It has a modern, well equipped kitchen and two comfortable bedrooms. There are toilets upstairs and downstairs. It was plenty warm enough too (June). The garden area is super, with 6 or 8 steps up to the outdoor large table and chairs and 20 plus steps up to the summer house which is set in a beautiful snug garden with nice views. We found the locals to be very friendly and a well stocked village shop and a pub a short walk away downhill are very handy. Winster is a great central location for the southern Peak District with the towns of Ashbourne, Bakwell and Matlock easily accessible. There are also many quaint villages within reach too: Hartington, Ilam, Youlegreave etc. If you like walking or cycling then Dovedale, Carsington Water and the Monsal Trail are all not far away. There are also a few walks right from the doorstep. The owners were great, good instructions on booking and really helpful during the stay. Just be aware that the cottage is set back from the road behind other cottages so you will need to carry your luggage a bit further than usual and make sure your car has a good handbrake - it's not called Hill cottage without reason! A super stay in a traditional stone built cottage in a lovely setting. We may well be back!

Glad you had an enjoyable stay. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "Hill Cottage is a delight."

Set in the pretty village of Winster, which has a good local shop and a pub. The cottage is very comfortable, clean, and charming. It's surprisingly spacious inside, the boot room was really useful, especially for the lovely walks straight from the front door, and the cottage is in easy reach of Hope Valley. We had a mix bag of weather but the cottage was cosy and warm and we enjoyed using the log burner. On sunny days the garden was wonderful. There are a number of steps but the views are stunning. After being out all day, to come back and sit in the garden with a chilled glass of wine, and look out across the hills, was my favourite thing to do. The description of the cottage and the photos provided by the owners are accurate. The owners were very helpful and always returned our calls quickly. I can't recommend Hill Cottage highly enough. After our two weeks holiday we really didn't want to leave.

Thank you so much for the positive feedback and we are very pleased to hear you had a great time. Hope to welcome you back soon. Property Owner

  • "Cottage was beautiful and in a very nice location."

Would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the temperamental hot water, broken hot water tap in the kitchen and central heating system which heated every room except for the sitting room. Brought our recycling home with us as there didn't seem to be any containers for them and no instructions other than to put everything in the wheelie bin.

Apologies, the kitchen tap/hot water tap was not in full working order. I’d paid a local plumber prior to your arrival for the tap to be fixed and the cleaners flagged with me that the tap was not working correctly when you checked out. If you had called during your stay, I could have rectified by contacting the plumber. I understand all is now fixed but will call the current guests tomorrow to check. The heating in the living room is under floor heating and details are provided in the email provided prior to your stay. Glad your short stay overall was enjoyable. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage which was surprisingly spacious with 2 big bedrooms."

Comfortable beds and sofas and well heated. There was a shower and separate bath. Terraced garden, including summer house, was a great sun trap for an afternoon drink. Great location half way between 2 village pubs. A couple of improvements: - all taps dripped, particularly the kitchen one - the dining table wasn’t fit for purpose as legs couldn’t fit underneath so you had to sit very uncomfortably side on. - needs a vegetable peeler

  • "We had a lovely stay at Hill Cottage over Christmas, the kitchen was very well equipped, we tend to err on the side of caution and bring our own items, really not necessary here."

A lovely Christmas themed welcome pack on our arrival and fantastic contact with the owners, over a minor issue that was resolved. The cottage is in a stunning location with so many places to visit locally, but highly recommend a walk around the village itself. Check the Miners Standard pub website for great walks and highly recommend popping in for a drink. Marks down are for the flagstones at the front of the cottage that need to be jet washed, they were very slippery where moss had been left to grow, and the need for a proper access statement to get to the cottage. This was provided by the owner after booking but not clear on Sykes, could be an issue for some. Also the ground floor toilet/cloakroom should be mentioned in the listing, whilst there are some steps it is easily accessible unless wheelchair based. I would wholeheartedly recommend Hill Cottage if you don’t have any accessibility issues.

Lovely well laid out kitchen with every thing you might need (except dishwasher). Very good quality kitchen appliances . • "A wonderful cottage."

It was exceptionally clean and has a fantastic layout. The hosts were helpful by providing last minute bed sheets as the weather was particularly warm. The description was almost accurate. I would recommend that the parking description is a little more detailed in terms of expect to park your car on a steep hill and not directly outside the property esp for those who bring bicycles on their holiday and for folks with mobility issues as the stone steps to the property are uneven and the footpath is also steep. I would also recommend that you possibly look to swap out the washing machine for a dish washer too. However I appreciate this is a personal preference. Nonetheless we did have a comfortable stay. Thank you

  • "An excellent and well kept property."

The facilities provided well met our expectations and left nothing to chance. The location in both the village and Peak District was perfect for facilities, walking and entertainment. Even though we had some vile weather the TV was little used, we preferred to use the village pubs or to sit around the kitchen table and plan, talk and read (with a little wine from time to time). The garden and summer house with thier views across the village were the icing on the cake. All in all an excellent stay ( and yes we will be back).

  • "We had a lovely stay at hill cottage, so good we didn’t want the holiday to end."

The cottage itself was very well presented, with absolutely everything needed for a comfortable stay, and the fact that it is set back away from a busy road the house itself was very quiet and peaceful. The owners made it clear that they were on hand if there was any problems, which of course there wasn’t. The only thing (which is in no way a criticism) is the garden was on quite a few levels which may not suit the elderly or people with very young children. Otherwise a great place to stay.

We were so happy the first time that we had to visit again. This is one of those rentals where everything is catered for. Lovely touches like a heated coat room, OS Maps of the area on the wall in the downstairs toilet, lovely cottage kitchen with all the accessories you need, comfy beds, lovely and quiet location, wood fire. There is a nice summer house but we have yet to use it, as we have visited both times in spring and it has been too cold on both occasions. Plenty of nice walks nearby, Bakewell and Buxton are both close with a car. Perfect place to wind down and relax.

The hosts have provided d everything guests could want. We were there on the coldest week of the winter and it was always warm and cozy and the log burner was a great extra. The situation is quiet and peaceful yet convenient for the well-stocked village community-run shop. • "Very pretty cottage, tastefully decorated."

We found it easier to park on East Bank and walk to the cottage the back way, It's a steep road on which to park the car. Yes, there are lots of steps but great views from the garden and it was good to have a pre dinner drink in the Summer House. We visited both pubs in the village, The Miners Standard is a friendly walkers pub burgher and chips kind of place and The Bowling Green doesn't have a restaurant but does take aways on Fri/Sat/Sun although quite a comprehensive menu and the food was very good. It's only a 5 minute walk from the cottage. If I'm being really picky I would have liked a cafetière so that we could have made a decent cup of coffee, I'm not a fan of instant and a dishwasher would have been good but appreciate it may be difficult to have fitted one in the kitchen. It's a lovely place to stay if you like a quiet retreat and is not far from some lovely walks and places to visit.

Really pleased you enjoyed your stay at Hill Cottage and I can confirm the cottage now has a cafetière. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
