• "This is a lovely cottage which is in a very private location."

  On the whole the cottage is well-stocked with most of the things needed for a week away. The hot tub was appreciated and used daily. The milk shed at the end of the driveway was amazing. Any issues were dealt with very quickly. Thanks Steve and team.

• "Had a really lovely stay at the cottage."

  Set back off road in a lovely location.The cottage was spotless and the owners provided a welcome pack on arrival.The lounge was very cosy with a log burner,which was very nice for the evenings.The kitchen diner was sizeable and had a big family table as well as another log burner .Upstairs there are 3 lovely bedrooms and a family bathroom.Finally the hot tub was fantastic and certainly well used by our family.We would most certainly stop at Woodthorpe Cruck cottage again in the future.Thankyou to the owners for a wonderful stay at your cottage.

• "Lovely cottage with character."

  Shame about the extremely noisy creaky floor boards.. would be no good to put the children to bed early and think you wouldn’t wake them when going to bed! Didn’t bother us too much as we were a group of adults . Shower room down stairs had no heating , which was a shame. Think the owners had a problem with the cleaner as had a couple of issues including clothes left from previous guests in a drawer which suggests their job wasn’t done properly.. having said all of that, when contacting them the issues were put right very quickly. Smelly drains were an issue too.. maybe worse in the summer months ? On the plus side the log fires were super for evenings in and if it’s a switch off from hustle and bustle in the middle of nowhere this would be the place to go.

• "We had a great stay in this lovely property."

  Visited lots of places from here including Chatsworth House, Heights of Abraham, Dovetale Stepping Stones, Mam Tor and Peak Wildlife Park. The cottage was well equipped, very comfortable and the hot tub was great after a busy day. The welcome box was also a lovely addition. Just remember to take a shaver adapter for shaver or electric toothbrush. Luckily we took manual brushes too. Would definitely return if visiting the area again or recommend to friends and family.

• "Spacious rooms, serene locale and ideally located for activities for the whole family."

  Lumsdale falls, Matlock park and Heights of Abraham were highlights of our stay. Fresh breads and cakes on offer at the quaint vending machine system at the entrance to the property. Forgot kids' TV connector, which the hosts kindly agreed to dispatch via mail!! Amazing experience and highly recommended!

• "Just got back from a week stay at Woodthorpe Cruck cottage."

  Upon arrival the cottage was clean and there was a lovely welcome basket which was really appreciated. There was lots of information in the cottage for things to do in the area and guidance for the cottage. The surroundings were stunning and the cows were a lovely sight, the kids loved them. Some points or suggestions would be: 1) There is a drain smell coming from the downstairs wet room. Was particularly bad in the living room. We had to buy air freshener to help. 2) Some stepping stones would be beneficial from the cottage to the hot tub and robes provided considering farm workers can be on the property at anytime of the day (as we established during our stay) 3) Give guests the option to adjust the temperature of heating as they feel comfortable. Most days the cottage was really warm, too warm, and we had to leave all windows open, which meant lots of fly's in the property. 4) A sign at the end of the drive would be beneficial as the entrance kind of jumps on you. The vending machines at the end of the drive are a great idea, but could do with a spruce up. And the pictures updated on Sykes website would be beneficial also. 5) The kids games and books were old and tired and of no real interest to our children (5 and 11). Maybe these could be updated and maybe a DVD player and a small selection of DVDs would be a great addition. We would also like to leave a comment here for other guests, (mainly for reassurance reasons) about an incident that took place while we were there. One evening at around 7.30pm, we were surprised to see a man standing at the wall of the cottage staring into the kitchen windows. He then moved to near the gate, staring into the dining room windows. He was there around 2 minutes in total. He really caused concern to our children so we contacted the owner to see if this person was known to them. We was reassured that he was and they also suggested that this was to be expected as the cottage is on a working farm (which we knew about when booking) Initially I said this was fine, as I was relieved that the man wasn't a stranger to the owners. However, afterwards i have felt that his behaviour was in appropriate. I respect and understand the cottage is on a working farm and the farmer workers should attend to farming duties when needed. However, looking into the property where guests are staying for as long as he did, we feel wasn't usual farming duties or behaviour and did make us feel uncomfortable at the time. I felt it was important to add this to my review for future guests reassurance incase it happens again. Especially those with children. I would suggest maybe a note somewhere telling future guests that they may see farm workers actually on the cottage property in the evening and not just working there in the day. I also think the owner and farm workers need to be aware of how this made us feel and maybe some tighter boundaries around respecting guests privacy too. Other than the above incident, we enjoyed our stay at Woodthorpe, nice cottage, beautiful surroundings.

Drain Smell - The cottage is on a septic tank but this should not cause any smell. We will investigate this. It is important to report any concerns to us straight away so we can address them. 2. Stepping stones & Robes. - we will look into the feasibility of this. We provide hot tub towels but not robes. 3. Heating. The Underfloor heating has 3 settings which adjusts the temperature. Windows can be opened if you have been fortunate enough to bring the sunshine with you. 4. Games - we will check the condition of the games. Some have been left by previous guests so we have left them in for your enjoyment. Unfortunately we do not provide a dvd player or a selection of DVDs 5. Sign and vending machine. Clear instructions are given as to how to find the cottage prior to your arrival. The vending machines are not part of the cottage but are available for yours and general public use. 6. The farmer will periodically check on cattle and crops in the fields surrounding the cottage. At no point will anyone enter the cottage boundary. There will also be occasions where tractors go up the cottage track but as described the cottage is situated within a working farm. Most guests enjoy this experience especially when the cows are in the field next to the cottage. We do not accept that the incident described is correct but as always will ensure that any farm activities impact on your stay as little as possible. Thank you again for your feedback. • "This is a brilliant booking."

  The cottage is gorgeous, and a great location. Close enough to walk to the local village and a short drive to the town for shops and lots of walks around aswell as a drive into the peaks. Lots of space and room in the cottage to be comfortable without feeling on top of each other. We are looking at going back again next year.

  Lovely kitchen and furnishings, plenty of crockery and utensils. We had pizzas delivered one night, and got a taxi there and back to a pub no problem. Hot tub and towels very nice. Gorgeous rural location. The only downside was the terrible smell emanating from the downstairs wet room (has been mentioned on previous reviews) This rendered that room unusable for us, so all 6 had to use the upstairs bathroom. Otherwise a nice weekend stay

• "We had such a wonderful stay at Woodthorpe Cruck Cottage, it's super cosy with tons of home comforts included - we definitely overpacked!"

  The welcome package was a fab touch and so thoughtful. The beds are also really comfy, we slept like logs. The kitchen and utility room is well stocked and every small detail is thought of. The location is peaceful and secluded, although supermarkets are just a short drive away for grabbing any essentials. We also had a lovely afternoon tea at Stretton Hall Farm nearby - I'd definitely recommend stopping by! The only small downsides was the underfloor heating was a bit too warm, even on the lower setting - we ended up opening the windows and doors a couple of times (not exactly a big issue at all). There was also an occasional sulphur-like smell from the sink and shower drains, but we put this down to the rural location. Overall, we'd not hesitate to visit again in the future and would highly recommend the cottage to others.

• "Such a beautiful place!"

  Peaceful and beautifully restored cottage with everything you need including a lovely hot tub. Communication was great with the owners who answered my questions when needed. Views were fab, nothing better than sitting in the evening listening to owls hooting. Definitely a change from the main road we live on! Lots of info about the cottage and surrounding areas. Only slight negative was there is an issue with drain smell now and again and the washing machine and tumble are a little dated but none of which spoiled the stay. Will definitely go back and recommend!

  The property is spacious and comfortable, with all the amenities you need for a stress free stay. The owners have thought of everything you might need and also left a rather lovely welcome basket. The hot tub was a lovely bonus. There are towels for this so you don’t need to bring anything. The views were wonderful and the kids enjoyed seeing the cows and the tractors every now and then while they played in the very well kept garden. The location is perfect for getting to all the Derbyshire attractions. My only feedback would be that the hoover could do with updating as it’s not great at picking up the crumbs on the kitchen floor. Other than that, a truly lovely stay and we hope to return again. Would definitely recommend this wonderful cottage.

  The cottage had lots of charm. Our feedback would be in regards to some of the appliances such as; the bin (foot pedals missing and difficult to open) The fridge and no door shelves, space was limited for multiple people staying. The outside furniture was very uncomfortable, unsteady and made it difficult to enjoy the outside space in comfort. It is not like what is shown on the main photos. Some TLC could go into the finishing touches to make the stay 10/10

• "A lovely place to relax and get away from a busy city life, especially with the hot tub and 100 acres of field to gaze across."

  Very spacious, always warm due to the underfloor heating and provided a peaceful night sleep. The welcome basket with produce from the local farm was a nice touch also. The only negative would be the cleanliness, namely plates and glasses that still had food residue on when we arrived and smells coming from almost every drain and tap in the house. Fridge and dishwasher could do with being replaced also due to wear and tear. There are cobwebs and creaky floorboards but that is understandable for a house that old. I would recommend this to anyone who needs to a comfortable break from a stressful life.

• "Beautiful Cottage, great facilities, great communication."

  Great host. Excellent all round. The check in time caused us a concern as on Sykes it states 17.00, due to this late time we cancelled a table booking at the Hunlock Arms. The only reservation they had was 18.00. It left time too tight for us. Host did message the day before to say check in time was earlier but by then we had cancelled the table. Please update check in/out times on Sykes. Other than this a fabulous stay.

  We always try to make the cottage available as early as possible for our guests but there are occasions when we require extra time for cleaning and maintenance which is why the check in time is specified as 5pm. We always try and accommodate requests for an earlier check if asked in advance Property Owner

  It’s quiet, private and ideally suited to a family holiday. It is also very dark which makes it ideal for star gazing, I would definitely recommend this cottage. If the owner wishes to make improvements I would suggest the following: • it was very warm and we struggled to adjust the controls • the floorboards upstairs were incredibly creaky • maybe add a sign on the gateposts to help identify the correct gate (especially in the dark). The above is not criticism, merely our reflections. Please pass on our thanks to the owners for a lovely weekend.

  Clean, well appointed, exactly as described. Vending machine at the nd of the lane is great. Walk to the local shop (small, one stop type shop) was next to a pub that makes nice Sunday Roasts (The Woodthorpe Inn) which took about 15 minutes. We didnt see the owners, but they left us a beautiful welcome basket of goodies (milk, eggs, bread & cake), all of which were lovely! There are plenty of cleaning supplies in the kitchen, pots, pans, baking trays, crockery, glasses, cutlery etc... you just need to get your food. Would love to go back again next year.

• "The property was fine but a number of things could have improved it."

  When we arrived the fields were being prepared with foul smelling manure which I understand must be applied but the smell was very unpleasant. There are no hooks on the bedroom doors which would be nice. A coffee table in the lounge would be good. The fridge door was broken, there were insufficient pots and pans and some of the ones that were there had broken handles, also insufficient tea spoons. On the plus side we loved the hot tub.

• "We had a lovely holiday even if it was only for a week."

  The cottage was spacious for six of us. We loved being in the cottage with a beautiful open field view. We appreciated the welcome pack which encouraged us to frequently visit the vending machine for daily milk, eggs, bread, and cream. You do not need to over pack like we did. The cottage was well equipped, there are additional towels provided for the hot tub, which was not mentioned, so happy days. If you enjoy cycling, perhaps you may combine a day trip to Bakewell, stop over at the Hassop Station for cycling (you can rent bicycle from the cycle shop there) then reward yourselves with a nice lunch at the Hassop Station café. Many thanks to the owners for their thoughtfulness. Steve has been very helpful throughout our stay and easily contactable by a text or call, so thank you very much!

• "Had a lovely week away."

  House is beautiful and spacious. Location was spot on for walking. You need a car to go to the main walking hot spots like Mam Tor. Hot tub was lovely after doing a hike in the Peak District. Local pubs were good value for money but it is worth doing a bit of research to see which one's are doing food as we found that not all did food on Sunday evening or Monday/Tuesday. Milk, bread, cakes, eggs and potatoes can be brought at the vending machines opposite the track you take to the house, you will need cash to purchase but it is definitely worth it. Only down side for us was the bathroom/shower facilities. We were from two household so took one facility each to use. The downstairs shower room is not very comfortable to use and everything gets wet as there are not hooks and a shower curtain may help to stop the toilet roll etc getting so wet. However don't let this put you off booking the place. Owner if very helpful if you have a problem and acts quickly.

  Plenty of room for 6 adults. On its own amongst farmland so rowdy games in the enclosed garden did not disturb neighbours, we used the hot tub every day which was very clean and well situated. Plenty of walking nearby and in the Peaks and a good pub in walking distance. Would highly recommend.

  Hot tub a nice bonus and so was the welcome pack provided along with cleaning/washing supplies and toiletries. Would definitely come back to this cottage, really good position and perfect size for our group of 6.

  ... very comfortable, exceptionally clean, furnishings & bedding of good quality. It is quite remote but a mile from the town for shopping. All information was provided. The owner Steve went above & beyond. On arrival was a welcome pack of milks, bread, eggs, a lovely cake, even ice in the freezer.... all very much appreciated. The logs for the wood burner were in abundance.... although we didnt need those on as it was warm enough. We had a lovely holiday & would most definitely stay again.

• "Lovely cottage, nice quiet area."

  Steve (owner) was at hand when ever we needed to ask something and was more than helpful. Hot tub was great at keeping the children entertained, and kitchen/cottage had everything we needed for the week. Lots to visit around the area however everything is a drive (was no issue for us at all, but be prepared for hills). Amazing holiday with lots of great memories made.

  lovely warm vibes... Its so well organised. The owners respect your privacy.... Hot tub is under cover and they even put like an awning cover on the front entrance of hot tub to keep wind out.....signal on phone lines was good.....Netflix only however plenty of good choice .... Parcel of goodies when you arrive is a lovely touch... Turn left out of cottage follow road Tesco or Aldi only a five minute car journey, lovely pub and Macdonalds too..

• "The cottage was beautiful."

  We really enjoyed our stay. After having flights cancelled we managed to get a last minute break and it was perfect. The only thing I would consider changing would be the furniture in the lounge. It looks beautiful but isn’t the comfiest. I understand the decor ties in with the cottage feel but I think a more comfortable couch would be appreciated. I would 100% recommend this property and will hope to return back.

  !! Warm and cosy. Lovely hot tub. Lots of towels available when using the hot tub which was much appreciated. The owners who we met on arrival were really friendly and welcoming. The only criticism is the beautiful chesterfield style leather settees weren’t the comfiest for slobbing out on!! Maybe some foot stools would help? Definitely a place I would recommend and would like to stay in again!! It made our girls weekend!!

  Cottage is very secluded and on the doorstep the Peaks. Aldi and Tesco 5 mins away plus the Tupton Tap is a lovely pub just up the road. Cottage is very warm thanks to both the underfloor heating and the two log burners. Hot Tub is a great addition all rooms beautifully furnished.

• "The toilet in the upstairs bathroom was not fixed to anything!"

  The master bedroom had no en suite just a family bathroom upstairs to share.The other shower was in the downstairs toilet as a wet room but water went all over - not really a second bathroom. The light bulbs had been replaced in the cooker hood but just left hanging down! A strange lamp had been fixed up over the kitchen sink to give a bit more light to the darkish kitchen. The owners came up to the property twice on the sunday to check the hot tub and whilst we appreciate it may need chemicals in it, we were leaving the following morning and perhaps it could have waited until then. The owner messaged us on the sunday evening to ask if we were planning on leaving early? otherwise would come and collect the key back at 10am! We have stayed in Sykes cottages several times and this was the most expensive property to date and also the least favourite. We appreciate that this must happen occasionally and it didn't spoil our weekend away.

  Thankyou for your feedback. We rely on this to ensure that we make your stay is as enjoyable as possible. Following on from your comments the toilet has now been secured and the light bulbs in the cooker hood have now been clipped back into place. With regards to having no en-suite, our listing clearly states that there is an upstairs family bathroom and never implies that the master bedroom has an en-suite. Also the downstairs shower room is as you point out a wet room and is again as described. The hot tub requires checking ideally every day but every 2 days as a minimum. We will always aim to do this whilst you are away from the property but there will be occasions when this not possible. The checking of the hot tub is for our guests comfort to make sure the water quality is maintained throughout their stay. On the day before you leave we will send you a message advising that someone will come across and meet you at 10am to collect the keys. We ask you to advise us if you wish to leave earlier so that we can make arrangements to meet you but never ask you to leave any earlier than the agreed 10am Check Out Time.   The owners provided lovely welcome pack and fresh flowers on arrival and were helpful in swiftly resolving a slight malfunction with the bathtub plug. Had all the facilities we needed and the farm vending machine shop at the end of the lane is super handy for fresh eggs, bread, milk etc. Peaceful and quiet location surrounded by beautiful scenery we would definitely stay again. • "We stayed for a week at Woodthorpe Cruck Cottage."

  It was fantastic. We had two young boys with us - aged 5 and 7. Coming from London, they loved the open space and fresh air and, of course, the outdoor Jacuzzi! The cottage had everything we needed for a perfect stay, and nearby, in the Peak District National Park, we did lots of day trips and cycling. Sarah and her son were extremely helpful with their tips on easy cycling trails for the kids and other excursions we should do. Set in the middle of a huge farm, the cottage was nice and quiet so we all got plenty of good sleep too! I would definitely recommend this cottage.

  Much much better then the pictures reflect. The location (though tricky to find), is wonderfully peaceful and quiet. Ideal for relaxing and getting away from it all. The herd of daisy cows that walk through the adjacent field is a magical sight in the morning - especially for young kids! The hot tub and the little extras adds a special touch.
