"A wonderful property in one of the best locations in the Peak District."
It was the second time we’ve stayed at the cottage and look forward to our next time!
-
"We enjoyed our stay at Holly Cottage."
Quaint cottage in a beautiful setting. Very comfortable with a home from home feel. We felt the television was a bit small and the larger oven wasn’t heating up, needs a new seal. Luckily we could use the smaller oven which worked okay. All in all a lovely weeks holiday.
-
"Lovely cottage with a determined hedgehog who visited the back door most days set in a beautiful very hilly village."
Exploring the many walkways in Winster was great with expansive views. The steps were very steep at the cottage and were a challenge for us and our older dogs but didn’t spoil the break. Chatsworth House and farm shop a definite go to for a day out where you could purchase fantastic local produce. People were very friendly and the scenic countryside went on for miles. To enjoy the area you did need to drive a lot but taking a wrong turn showed just how beautiful the area is.
-
"Lovely cottage, very cosy and quite roomy."
The garden was perfect for our little spaniel and we found it totally secure for him. Loved Winster and the area. Small things but could perhaps have done with some tin foil and maybe some sort of disinfectant/cleaning spray but no major deal. We would definitely like to book again in the future!
-
"Holly Cottage is a lovely place to stay."
The garden is beautiful with wonderful views - and we were blessed with great weather. Beds were comfortable, bathroom modern and kitchen well-equipped - although had difficulty getting fan oven above 160 degrees. Lots of great walks from village, pubs and community shop were friendly and helpful places for visitors. We will be back!

"We loved our week long stay at Holly Cottage!"
The cottage was set in a gorgeous location in the well served quaint village of Winster. We weren't prepared for all of the hills but the views were wonderful and we enjoyed many walks from the doorstep. The cottage was full of character and charm and was well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. The only slight issue we had was the garden was not fully enclosed on one side so our retriever tried his best to investigate this and we had to keep a good eye on him!! The log burner was great and so was the cosy sitting room and dining room. Beds were very comfy. We enjoyed delicious takeaways from the Bowling Green pub and also had a meal at the local Miners Standard pub. We would definitely return!!
-
"Holly Cottage is delightful, so cosy and charming!"
We spent a lovely week there for Christmas. It’s well equipped for self catering and in a lovely location. Spotlessly clean and comfortable, would definitely return and recommend! The owner is really accommodating and so helpful with local information.
-
"Lovely cosy, quirky cottage."
Since it snowed during our stay and the Christmas lights were on, it was like living in a festive rom-com!
-
"We (and our dog) had a wonderful stay at Holly cottage!"
The cottage itself is warm, spacious and very comfortable, with everything you could need, and the log fire was perfect for our stay, as the weather turned chillier (we even had a little snow!). The village is quiet and peaceful, with some lovely walks from the doorstep and is very conveniently located for travelling around the Peak District. Great communication from the owners, with clear directions for arrival and a guest book with comprehensive instructions for all of the amenities in the cottage and a very quick reply by text when we had a question. It was a fab experience all round and we would love to visit again.
-
"We had such a lovely stay at Holly cottage."
It was so clean and the log fire made it so cosy. The owners left basic provisions for us on our arrival, which was a big help. Literally everything was thought off to make our stay feel like home from home. They have 2 dedicated parking spaces which is great. We just loved the village of Winster, it’s so cute. There are a couple of pubs and a shop in the village. With an added bonus of being quite close to Chatsworth / Bakewell and many more places to visit. Please try this property - you won’t be disappointed.
Thank you Carla for your lovely review. We are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at Holly Cottage and the local area. We hope to host you again sometime. Property Owner

"Holly is a gorgeous stone cottage, situated in the picturesque village of Winster in the Peak District."
It’s cosy and has everything you need with really comfortable beds, we slept so well! Winster makes all of the joys of the Peak District easily accessible. We loved biking the High Peak and Tissington Trail loop and the trail head was just a 10 minute drive from the cottage. There are also beautiful walks with stunning views right from the doorstep. The guest book was really helpful with easy instructions to find good walks. Top this off with dog friendliness and an open fire and you have the perfect cottage! Thank you for a wonderful stay and we can’t wait to come back
Thank you so much Laura for your lovely review. We look forward to hosting you again. Property Owner

"Lovely comfortable cottage with good facilities."
Quiet village, friendly locals. Lovely walks from the door, beautiful scenery. A great weekend to spend time with friends.

"Loverly cottage very clean bed very comfortable we enjoyed our stay only thing ..."
Loverly cottage very clean bed very comfortable we enjoyed our stay only thing was the back steps up to garden very steep and slippery went out front and wallked round to back on road
Thank you James for letting us know they had become slippery. Scrubbing the steps is usually a September job but I appreciate that with all the summer rain we have had, it needed to be done earlier. Without you telling us, there would still be a few weeks before they would 'normally' be cleaned. So thank you for the feedback. I only wish you had let me know whilst you were there and we could have had them cleaned and sorted so you would not have been inconvenienced walking around to the front. The steps were scrubbed at the weekend and so both front and back lichen free. Property Owner

"Holly Cottage is a very comfortable, well equipped property with a lovely, secure garden for dogs."
Situated in the peaceful village of Winster with wonderful views and many walks from the doorstep, including the Limestone Way. We loved it!
-
"The cottage is exactly as described and the location and views are lovely."
The cottage is well equipped, beds were comfortable etc directions were helpful. Right to emphasize the steepness of stairs to back garden. Challenging for us and elderly dog. One small point. No clear instructions on what to do with rubbish or collection days. Previous tenants left a large bag in front garden which was still there when we left. But lovely stay , good walks, sunny skies. We hope to come again.
Thank you for the feedback and for our highlighting our lack of information regarding the rubbish collection. I apologise I will check our information guide, make sure it is clearer and will also mention it in our pre-arrival documentation. The rubbish collection is deemed Trade waste as its a holiday let, and as such is supposed to be collected by Darley Dale Council on a Wednesday. A service for which we pay. I will follow this up with the Council as it should have been collected. Property Owner

"Absolutely loved this cottage, it was warm, comfortable and relaxing."
Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Great location and excellent base for traveling around, with great walks right on the doorstep. We would highly recommend this property and would love to come back.
Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. We look forward to hosting you again. Property Owner

"We had an excellent week at Holly Cottage."
The cottage was clean, cosy and comfortable and an excellent base for a winter holiday. Whatever problems existed for the previous booking, have been dealt with and we all enjoyed our stay. It is an old cottage, it’s quirks are more charming than annoying and a summer stay would also include the use of a rather nice garden (a bit chilly in February, so largely unused this trip). Parking outside the cottage is a bit of a lottery, but we managed to unload and load there and then the owners provide a space a two-minute’s walk up the hill, so it’s not a problem. Winster itself is a lovely village to stay in - we were here in a different cottage last year and came back for a second trip. It’s excellent for walks – you can simply walk out the front door and be in the countryside a couple of minutes later. And it also has a very good village store too. Bakewell is about 15 minutes away, for shops and supermarkets, but mostly we spent the week exploring the myriad of footpaths that run out of the village.

"Our stay over Christmas at Holly Cottage was mixed."
The cottage itself is in a beautiful village of Winster with its two friendly pubs and a very handy Community Shop run by helpful and friendly volunteers, such assets for the village. Holly Cottage itself was nicely decorated downstairs for Christmas. Unfortunately our stay was marred by the fact that the cottage was not very clean, there were cobwebs hanging from the ceiling in the bedroom, the bathroom was not very hygienic - the plughole in particular was disgusting. The bedroom that had two beds pushed together had a very thin sheet on the bed and no mattress cover which I found very unhygienic. Also the outer wall in this bedroom was very damp and wet. The cooker door did not shut properly which bearing in mind I was cooking Christmas lunch was a bit annoying. I am told by Sykes that I should have complained at the time even though it was the Christmas break and bank holidays and that the issues would have been remedied! So this is advice for all future users - make sure you report the issues at the time. The owner on hearing of the issues following my initial particularly around the cleanliness of the property emailed me and I quote "was sorry to read that the cleanliness of the cottage was not up to standard. I have not been pleased with the company I have been employing for cleaning/laundry and as a result have a new company starting on Monday". This in my view is an acknowledgement that there were and had been issues with cleanliness at Holly Cottage. Its a shame it spoilt what was our first Christmas away from home for nearly 20 years.
As we have said, we were having problems with our cleaners sufficient that we have engaged a new cleaning company. Our issues were with regard to the replenishment of stocks such as tea towels, dishwasher tablets, wood, kindling etc and at no point has anyone suggested any concerns with cleanliness. We were required to give the old company one months’ notice and we had hoped that in this period they would have continued to service the property in a professional manner. However it appears they let us down again, and unfortunately we were unaware there were any problems until a few days after the guests had left. This meant we were unable to deal with any concerns they had at the time. Property Owner

"Gorgeous cottage in a lovely village lovely location and spec of cottage - we had a super week here."
-
"Beautiful character cottage in ideal location and lovely village setting."
Had everything we needed for a relaxing and comfortable stay, very peaceful spot with wonderful views. Great pubs close by and walks from doorstep. Hope to visit again.
-
"We have just returned from a week at Holly Cottage."
Family of 4 and a dog. Had a lovely week. Cottage was well equipped and comfortable. Handy parking at rear of cottage. Local shop was well stocked. (Aldi is 15mins away). Great location for visiting the White Peak area. We walked, hired Kayaks at Carsington Water, Cycle hire on the Monsal Trail at Hassop Station, Cheedale stepping stones walk, Stanton Moor, Youlgreave outdoor swimming and more. I found the local walk book (written by local resident) really helpful for 1-2 hour walks from the village - great for walking the dog (there are a few copies in the cottage). Be aware that the pub just down from the village is only open at weekends, but the Miners Standard is open all week and was really friendly. Beautiful area and will be back.
-
"We had a lovely week in Holly Cottage in Winster."
The cottage had everything we needed and the shower was fantastic and the bedrooms and beds were so comfortable! Everyone in the village was so friendly and we would love to come back, a week wasn't long enough!
-
"Superb cottage whose owners have thought about all the little extras that make it a home from home."
The cottage has a beautiful garden, which is fully enclosed, Great for dogs!
-
"Fantastic cottage , if we had to pick fault it would be that in an ideal world it would be nice to have an extra toilet/bathroom , it wasn't a massive issue but it would've made our stay 10/10 instead of 9."
5/10 !!
-
"Couldn't have picked a better week to stay at Holly Cottage."
The weather was perfect. Holly Cottage was very comfortable and homely. Would highly recommend staying here. Perfect location for visiting various places - Chatsworth House and Farm Shop is a must, Dovedale, Ashbourne, Matlock. So many walks from your doorstep. Sunday roast at the Bowling Green Pub was excellent! Only one minor point, which is minor - the fridge freezer is just a small under counter fridge with ice box so don't pack lots of food and drink like we did.
-
"Super house."
Really well kitted out and really warm. Owner, super helpful. Brilliant location - great walks from the house, great village shop, great pubs nearby for food. Having 2 parking spaces available is really useful in Winster.
-
"Fantastic cottage in a fabulous little Village ."
The cottage was well equipped and very comfortable . Their are two pubs in Winster both very close to the cottage and the food at the Miners Standard was fantastic - so good we went 3 times . Would definitely recommend Holly cottage
-
"Fabulous cottage and the dog loved the garden (as did we !"
). Will definitely come and stay at Holly Cottage again. We had a lovely stay even if the weather was wet and stormy and the cottage was so warm and cosy. Winster is perfectly situated for all the places we wanted to visit and even the village and surrounding walls were lovely. 10/10!
-
"Lovely break away."
Felt like home from home
-
"Beautiful location in Winster with hillside views."
Warm, cosy cottage with large living areas and spacious bedrooms. Access to the garden from the back door is via steep steps which is described in the details but well worth the climb as the garden is large and has plenty of seating areas. Also secure for our dogs. Off road parking at rear of house was a welcome bonus in a Peak District village too. Great location for walks from the door and plenty of off lead opportunity for well behaved dogs. Would definitely recommend this cottage.
-
"Holly Cottage is simply magical."
The living room is comfortable and spacious with fantastic views across the Peak District. The kitchen is clean and well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The bathroom is good with a lovely rainwater shower, lots of hot water and good water pressure. Beds are comfortable and there is plenty of storage space. The steps to the garden are (as listed) steep but the garden itself is large and has beautiful views. Beyond this the two parking spaces are large and easily accessed. The village of Winster is one of the best we've stayed in with two pubs, a village shop, lots of friendly people and more walking routes than anyone could need. Within 15 minutes you can drive to Matlock (with great facilities including some amazing take-aways) and Bakewell. Hard to find a better spot to explore the Peak District.
-
"Lovely cottage, very comfortable and clean, well-equipped."
-
"This cottage is very pretty and set in a beautiful little village."
The village shop gives Minster a lovely sense of community, along with its two pubs.
-
"Winster was a wonderful location, excellent for walking and for our dogs."
The cottage was wonderful and very well equipped, couldn’t fault it in any way. The owners were very helpful before our stay and the local community shop was very convenient and well stocked. Just sad that we could only have takeaways from the local pub as the food was stunning. Maybe we can have the full experience next time we come!
-
"Great location, great property, really friendly and helpful owners."
As a family of 4 with 2 dogs we really enjoyed our stay
-
"Beautiful cottage in a fantastic location for a holiday in the Peaks!"
Facilities at Holly Cottage are excellent , really cosy and authentic cottage.
-
"Absolutely beautiful cottage, fairy tale standard when you first walk in to it!"
, with everything you need to get away from busy life and just enjoy the countryside, miners pub was brilliant, welcoming and the food was outstanding, the garden was well maintained and the dogs loved having a secure area to explore, the bike shed was a god send as my partner rides a trike so was big enough for him to store it with out having to dismantle!, excellent communication from jo the owner prior to the holiday start, the only negative I can say was the beds and pillows were hard and very unforgiving as far as comfort goes, advice to anyone over 5ft 6, remember to duck going through the doorways upstairs as you will bang your head!
-
"Great cottage in a lovely location."
The parking area is tight, so if you have a 4 x 4, there isn't really space for a second car.. Not a big deal though as plenty of other parking up the road. Such a lovely view of the village from the cottage front door : ) Local people were very friendly and welcoming, especially the lovely ladies at the village shop that literally sells EVERYTHING you can think of! Also highly recommend The Bowling Green pub - again, such nice friendly people and brilliant food at very reasonable prices. They're currently only doing takeaways due to the pandemic, but it's very well organised. We would love to go back - a really relaxing few days away : )
-
"The cottage was an absolute home from home, loved it!"
Warm, cosy, well equipped. The soft furnishings in every room so complemented the adorable cottage. The beds were very comfortable, the log fire for an autumn evening was lovely. The only minus was the downstairs toilet for those trips in the night, but everything else was so perfect a very small minus. Winster is a beautiful village the shop very well stocked and friendly. Well located for Matlock Bath and Bakewell plus many more places that we never had time to visit as we were only there for a weekend. Would highly recommend. The Litscher Family ( Mum, Son, Daughter, their partners and Charlie the dog)
-
"Lovely cottage, clean and well presented, and with comfortable beds."
It's clean and modern, but has kept the character of an old Derbyshire cottage - including some sloping floors. Do note the comments about the steps outside - this is Derbyshire, and this bit of Winster is very steep ! But the views across the valley are great when the weather is clear. Definitely a cottage to be recommended.
-
"Lovely and clean everything you need beautiful village"
-
"We had a fantastic week in Holly Cottage."
It really has everything! Beautiful period features complemented by contemporary soft furnishings. Amazing views from the cottage garden. Also spotlessly clean! Importantly it's in an ideal position to visit the whole of the Peak District. The cottage owner was very welcoming and helpful. We will be recommending it to family and friends as the perfect place to stay.
-
"We were surprised to find how roomy is Holly Cottage, with a large lounge and dining room and bedrooms arranged around an open landing from the kitchen which increased the feeling of space."
The cottage’s location is characterful and superb, with a great vista down into the village from the front of the house and stunning views from the terraced back garden. The facilities were good, the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable and the house information very detailed - we took advantage of the fantastic walks direct from the house, which were great for the dog. Winster itself is a very attractive village, with a great shop and two friendly pubs. The only drawback is that the pub closest to the cottage doesn’t open on Monday and Tuesday and only serves food Thursday to Sunday lunchtime. But it is a small, quiet and peaceful village so I guess it just doesn’t make economic sense to open every day. Having said that, we went for a drink on Wednesday evening and they were offering free nibbles of sausage rolls, chips and garlic bread - which you certainly won’t find in many pubs! We had a great stay and would thoroughly recommend this cottage.
-
"Lovely area my wife and I had a good holiday our 2 dogs enjoyed the garden but the steps were a little on the high side"
-
"Lovely comfortable cottage ideally located near to shop and pubs."
The owner, Jo, was very friendly and helpful
-
"As mentioned in the brochure parking is limited/restricted outside the property, but there is private parking for up to 3 cars at the top of the property, and alternative parking nearby, up the hill."
The brochure did mention that there was only one combined toilet/bathroom, however sharing a toilet/bathroom is inconvenient/awkward when 6 people are occupying the property. It would help if there was a toilet separate to the bathroom when 6 people are in residence. The front door (a barn door with a separate upper and lower opening) was double-bolted (above and below) when we arrived on the Friday, which meant we could only access the property through the rear entrance; we then had to unlock the front door from the inside. It is advisable to warn guests about the low ceiling/step between the kitchen and the dining area. One of our guests banged his head twice when carrying utensils/food from the kitchen up to the dining table.
-
"Lovely cottage in a lovely village."
I loved the combination of old original features in the cottage and new modern touches with the soft furnishings. Wood burner in lounge was very cosy in the evenings. Perfect location for country walks with or without your dog. Local pub and village shop 5 minute walk away. Will definitely book Holly Cottage again.
-
"Holly Cottage was a fantastic place to stay for the long weekend as it was comfortable, cozy, well equipped and we all enjoyed the walks that were just 5 minutes away from the door."
The village is great as it has all the things you need for a successful adventure somewhere other than home.
-
"Beautiful comfortable cottage in a stunning village with fantastic walks from the doorstep."
-
"Holly Cottage was charming, with a well kept garden."
Parking was ideal, we fitted three cars into it. The location was ideal with wonderful views due to its proximity in the village, very handy for the Old Bowling Green pub, which serves good food and a very good pint of Guinness. Good walking from the cottage with Matlock and Bakewell a short drive away.
-
"Winster is a small historic village mainly consisting of very old stone cottages full of character and interest."
There is a local shop which has a very good stock of food etc and is only 2 mins walk from cottage. For larger shops Matlock is only a few miles away. You are surrounded by beautiful countryside with a spectacular view from front of property There are many good walks direct from the cottage, ideal for dog walkers. My son- in- law is a very keen cyclist and loved the area because of its very steep hills! Ideally situated for day trips to places such as Matlock,Bakewell,Buxton,Chatsworth House etc.
-
"Steep steps in garden."
Not easy for anybody with balance problems. Other than that very good facilities.
-
"Very nice property in a delightful village, with an excellent local shop, and a pub which serves good meals, but not every day, so check beforehand."
The car-parking area is up a steep hill and round the corner (this IS the Peak District, after all!) but you can then walk downhill through the long pretty back garden to enter by the back door (mind your head!). The front step is the perfect spot for your morning coffee on a fine day, as it looks down (maybe 200 yards) towards the not-so-busy main street through the village, but it also has quite outstanding views across the valley. The property has fridge, microwave, oven etc, and all the cutlery, crockery, pots and pans you might need. There’s a large dining-room, and a very large lounge with tv, dvd player and a good selection of dvds from children’s to action movies. The surrounding area is very scenic, and it’s not far to Bakewell northwards or Matlock southwards, both interesting towns with pubs, restaurants, and shops. In short, an excellent spot for a holiday.
-
"This was our second visit to Holly Cottage."
It was lovely, warm and cosy just as we remembered. Despite snow and rain we were able to miss the worst of it and enjoy lovely walks at Mam Tor, the canal at Cromford, the Monsal Trail and Hardwick Hall. A great Easter holiday - already looking forward to next year!
-
"A wonderful stay in this chocolate box cottage."
As we drove up through Winster village, which is steeped in history, we saw Holly Cottage up ahead. This is a truly delightful cottage with tasteful decor, original character features and all of the comforts (and practicalities) of home. Jo provides an excellent welcome pack, full of useful local information. The cottage is well equipped and immaculately clean. The beds were really comfortable and all of the towels and linen were of good quality. Holly Cottage is clearly loved and looked after! We had a lovely meal in the Bowling Green pub, a mere stones throw from the cottage. There's plenty to see and do and we visited Bakewell and Matlock Bath on our whistle-stop tour of Derbyshire. The scenery is stunning, as is the architecture (both of Winster village and further afield). The local village store is really well stocked and run by volunteers, who were friendly and helpful. We strolled down the road for firewood and supplies and had a lovely chat with a local chap about his Land Rover. It's clearly a lovely community in a sleepy, (very) old village. We highly recommend this charming cottage either as a cosy retreat or a base for your holiday. Our only disappointment was that in late February, with the Beast from the East heading inland, we were unable to enjoy the fabulous garden to the rear of the property. That's definitely a summer sport! Thanks again to Jo and family, we had a fabulous time in your beautiful cottage. Caroline and Tim, Haworth, West Yorkshire.
-
"Absolutely loved it!"
The cottage was everything you could have asked for and more. The owners have gone above and beyond to ensure you have everything for a great stay. The location is fantastic also, it was like something off a postcard. Really, really impressed and would highly recommend!
-
"Lovely cottage in really lovely village."
Ideal for walking from as a base location. Cottage really clean and warm. Lots of room upstairs but kitchen would be a squeeze for more than two adults really. Having access to a garden was great however the steps up to it are a bit steep so worth knowing this in advance. Overall a lovely cottage which has been done up well
-
"Holly Cottage was lovely."
It was furnished to a high standard and very tastefully. All the bedrooms were of a good size. A pretty garden that was a sun trap. Parking for 3 cars. We bought a BBQ as there wasn't one. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
-
"A lovely warm, comfortable and well appointed cottage."
Very well located for exploring the Dales and Peak District. Great to have a pub and well stocked village shop a stones throw away. So wished we could have stayed longer!
-
"The cottage was perfect for us (six adults and dog!"
). Some great walks around the area and lovely pubs in the village. The owners were fantastic to deal with and left us lots of information in the welcome pack. Highly recommended!

About the location
WINSTER
Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.
The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
