  • "We have been to stay at Hawkyards cottage before & really enjoyed our stay."

Beautiful cottage, lovely village & fantastic scenery in the area. The views from up the Peaks at Dovestones are amazing & the cottage is great to come home to. Mike the owner is very helpful & left a bottle of wine which was much appreciated. We've booked again as we love it here.

Thanks once Julia. Glad you enjoyed the cottage and your walks round Saddleworth. Hope to see you again next Spring. Property Owner

  • "The family thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay in Dobcross."

Our host, Mike, was very attentive to our needs and pointed us to, for instance, the boat trip into the Standedge Tunnel at Marsden. Also the Yorkshire Day ceremony on Sunday 4 August - when we all marched with the brass band behind the Yorkshire flag down the main street in Uppermill. Champion! The cottage itself lived up to the description on Sykes. As others have noted it was clean, cosy and a great base from which to explore the Huddersfield Canal, Pots & Pans war memorial, Saddleworth Moor etc. My Chinese wife and adult step-daughter were captivated by the Aga, a truly wondrous machine that kept the house warm and AND cooked food to perfection with minimal experience. We shall return!

Thank you John. Hope to see you again soon. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely week in this beautiful cottage."

It has a very warm and welcoming feel and is in the middle of the gorgeous Saddleworth villages. You can walk to lots of pubs and cafes. The main upstairs bedroom is gorgeous and full of light. The kitchen has an Aga which meant that is was always cosy, and it was very quick to cook on. The access is down a steep lane but it has its own space and room to turn and a lot of the time we left the car there and walked. From nearby towns with park and ride you can get the tram into Manchester, which is fun and relaxing. We liked the cottagy decor, all the wood and interesting pictures and the lovely views across the valley. The owner was very helpful too and met us when we arrived to explain the Aga etc... It was cold and rainy the week we stayed but we were very comfortable and cosy in this cottage.

Thanks for your kind comments. Pleased you enjoyed your stay despite the weather. Hope to see you in Saddleworth again. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay in Dobcross."

The cottage was clean with large bedrooms and perfect for the village pubs and shop. It was also a very short walk to Uppermill with its varied shops and places to eat and the canal footpath. We would definitely stay again.

Thanks Richard. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Look forward to seeing you again Mike Property Owner

  • "This is our 2nd stay at Hawkyard's Cottage & we loved it."

It's so warm & relaxing, views of the hills & more fantastic walks out to Castleshaw reservoir & Hill fort, and the wild walk from Dovestones to the Chew Valley reservoir & across the moor. The cottage is beautiful & even though the weather was wet we had a great time. For walkers & those who love villages that are unspoilt, it's a brilliant place to stay.

Thanks Julia for you review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay. So sorry though about the weather. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful break at Hawkyards Cottage."

The cottage is set in a stunning village. The cottage is a beautiful 18th century building with lovely features. We particularly liked the big kitchen warmed by the aga. Two substantial sized bedrooms. Mike was most helpful in our arrival and the following day. We have no hesitation in recommending this cottage as we will be back as it’s a very convenient location for visiting our family close by.

  • "We had a fabulous time at Hawkyard's cottage - lovely period features, warm, comfortable & very relaxing."

The rooms are beautiful & the Aga is great, especially the toast (a tip from Mike the owner). We had good communication from Mike & the village is quaint. Had some good walks up Pots & Pans, Dovestones & around Diggle straight from the door. Uppermill has some nice cafés & pubs & very warm atmosphere. We loved our holiday here & will definitely be back again. Thanks to Mike for meeting us at the cottage to show us the ins & outs & making us feel welcome.

  • "This property is stunning with the big beams and the lovely big main bedroom, the flooring in the kitchen with the aga and the big table was beautiful."

Upon arrival I was unsure where to park my car so I knocked on someone’s house and asked. The garden has no access from the property which people should be made aware of specially if they have dogs. The sofa is really in a bad condition (I took photos upon arrival) I turned the thread bare side over and the other side was really dirty so I just put a blanket I had over the sofa. The upstairs toilet has a big crack in it and I could not get the bathroom window open at all. There was a fair amount of white dog hair downstairs and upstairs which I tried to Hoover up but the hoover in the property is years old and it’s wasn’t picking anything up. A couple of nights it was really cold and there was no instruction on how to get the radiators on. It would be nice to leave some cleaning products (dishwasher tablets ect) as I had to go out and buy some so that I could keep the property clean. Overall I had a lovely stay in the property and the area but there was some issue which could be easily resolved.

  • "The cottage is situated in an ideal location: the village is picturesque."

It is a little tricky to locate. One detail that is not mentioned and is inconvenient for taking the dogs out, is that there is no direct access to the back garden from the house. Otherwise, the interior is well laid out and very comfortable. The Aga certainly keeps the house warm! Great walks and scenery abound and there is the wonderful Dobcross Band & Social Club in the village.

  • "Fantastic spacious historic cottage full of charm and character and with everything you could need."

The village of Dobcross was a stunning time capsule with a great pub. Great base for exploring the local area by car or on foot. Beds were a great size and the dog loved the garden. The Aga may not be for everyone but for me it added character to the kitchen. The only negative I had was that the kitchen needed a deep clean and the sofas were well worn and dirty. With a good clean downstairs I'd definitely return.

  • "Lovely stay in a beautiful cottage - warm, comfortable and spacious."

Great patio area at the rear of the property to enjoy the fantastic views of the area. The local pub - The Swan - welcomed dogs and staff were very friendly! Although the cottage was lacking a range of kitchen utensils (there were no teaspoons, etc) and the bathroom doorknob kept falling off, we would visit again.

  • "We had a lovely few days at Hawkyard's cottage and I'm sure we'll be back."

Great location and lovely cottage. It might be useful to leave some information in the cottage where to find the boiler : cottage is very cosy downstairs because of the Aha , but cold upstairs and took some serious hunting to find the boiler. Also a bit confusing that the name on the cottage is different from the name we were looking for. But these are just tiny points : great time had by all, thank you.
