  • "A cosy cottage with great views."

The log fire was lovely. The owners communication was excellent. The description was very accurate, steep steps, low ceiling on the stairs etc. The stair bannister at the top is loose and needs urgent attention to avoid injury. A few little tips would help future visitors. New mattresses and pans are needed. A fire resistant glove to open the fire door more easily would be safer than using tools, tea towels or oven gloves. I never got tired at looking at the views from the cottage and it was very quiet. It gave me a very restful stay. It's in a great place for visiting lots of surrounding villages. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Brilliant location to explore all that this beautiful part of the country has to offer. Clean, comfy and well equipped. Absolutely stunning views from small back terrace. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend or indeed, revisit. Thanks so much

  • "The cottage was amazing."

It was lovely to be able to stay in a weavers cottage, exploring the local area and further afield and catching up with a close friend. Will definitely book again.

Thank you Sharon - you and your family are welcome back anytime. And thanks so much for leaving the cottage in such a superb condition :-) Property Owner

  • "Lovely spotlessly clean cottage with absolutely fantastic views from the living room and 2 main bedrooms."

The galley style kitchen has everything you need but is very narrow and as explained clearly in the description the cottage has very steep stairs from the upper level, to the living areas.... but these are historic quirks of this lovely cottage. Nearby there is a co-op and a lovely Indian Restaurant (Haveli) within easy walking distance, and places like Halifax with its beautiful Piece Hall, Hebden Bridge aren't very far away

Thank you Kevin - the cottage is certainly well situated for so many great West Yorkshire places to explore. Appreciate your lovely feedback! Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage with lots of original quirky features in a very picturesque setting."

The view from the cottage was stunning. The cottage has everything you need to enjoy your stay. The neighbours were very friendly. A few minutes walk from the cottage is a coop and a very lovely Indian restaurant and take away. Chris and Ian were very helpful. The guide book in the cottage had lots of places to eat, shop and visit, all worth a look. A lovely place to stay.

Thank you Emma! We're so pleased that you enjoyed the cottage and our village. Appreciate this very much. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was comfortable and homely with stunning views from all front windows, which was a fantastic feature."

We loved the history of cottage and location was good for local sight seeing. We had a problem putting the hob on but the owners were very helpful and happy to answer a quick email. To not bother them suggest a couple of notes in the cottage folder as IKEA instruction booklet wasn’t very clear.

Glad you enjoyed your stay - and thanks for the positive feedback - we have included some some simple instructions on how to use the induction hob - thanks! :-) Property Owner

Four generations stayed in comfort! The warm welcome from the owners, with all their advice and information about the cottage and beautiful area, gave us confidence before we even travelled that it was going to be special. Thank you Ian and Chris! Annette

My husband struggled with the Stairs but we were warned by the owner beforehand so knew what to expect. It was really handy for Public Transport and nice places to visit and eat out in the area.

  • "Parking was an issue & holiday interrupted by Yorkshire water workers"

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you felt parking was an issue and that you felt your holiday was interrupted by Yorkshire Water. Unfortunately all residents in the area were not pre-warned of the work needing to be carried out by the water company and the accompanying roadworks affecting the parking were very much out of our control. We are sorry for any inconvenience this caused you. Kind regards Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in a most wonderful setting."

Views from living room and bedrooms were just amazing. Golcar itself is a pretty place. Co-op very handy and on street parking never a problem to find. Lots of walking in and around village and also onto the moors and Peak District, of course. We did communicate with Ian and Chris who were very helpful and approachable owners. They were very supportive when we had a problem with our car and seemed like genuinely nice people who love their cottage.

  • "Ginnel corner has great walks from the doorstep via intriguing ginnels that bring history to life ."

Through woodland to canal banks you can get to slaithwaite and other interesting towns beyond. The cottage had all facilities we needed, be aware the steps to the kitchen and lounge are steep with low head clearance. The double rooms were clean and spacious with fab views but they were very light from early on so light sleepers like myself may need portable blackout blind or eye mask for a holiday lie-in ! We were happy with our stay and would recommend to friends and family .

  • "Ginnel Corner is a character, cosy cottage."

We found it warm and comfortable and everything we needed for a weeks stay was provided. The views from the cottage across the valley are stunning and the cottage is very quiet even though it is in the heart of Golcar. There is a Co-op, a butcher's, a post office and a pub and restaurant within a couple of minutes walk. In addition there's an excellent farm shop (Bolster Moor) within a few minutes drive. We found the kitchen rather small as we prefer to buy local produce and cook rather than eating out, but it was adequate for a weeks stay and was reasonably well equipped. You can park on the roadside outside the cottage but there are steps down to the cottage so loading/ unloading the car is a bit of a chore - especially as we arrived in snow! We enjoyed our stay in Ginnel Corner and would recommend it.

  • "The Sykes booking was simple and efficient."

The owners replied to our questions and gave suggestions on the area. On entering the quaint, historical weavers cottage built in the 1830's we thought Wow! The cottage was big enough for our party(six adults). The views were out of this world. It made us relax and chill immediately. The owners had thought of everything from advice on the local area in Golcar and further afield. The array of walks are superb. The owners thought of all the little things to begin our short break. The cottage was exceptionally clean, well loved over time and prepared for guests to a extremely high standard. The stairs are steep and therefore I would not recommend for the older generation. My daughter was impressed by the piano and my son the array of pubs close by. We all would recommend this cottage. A gem of a find in the Colne valley(age range between 24 and 55yrs).

It is perfectly located. It is very close to a bus stop which takes direct to Huddersfield town Centre. The property offers all the basic needs of a family away from home and that makes a huge difference. The owners (Ian and Christina) were also very friendly which makes life very easy. They are also available at all time to discuss any requirement you may have. We will definitely consider staying at the cottage another time. Martin Goury

This family-friendly cottage boasts stunning moorland views stretching for miles across the valley to the surrounding moorland and hills. The owners have tastefully renovated this charming 1830’s weaver’s cottage to present its original features, including flagged flooring, beams, open stonework and mullioned windows. Enter onto the ground floor, where you’ll find three comfy bedrooms, the two delightful main bedrooms boasting breathtaking views, which will immediately catch your eye. The floor is complete with a family bathroom, equipped with a first-class suite fitted around the rustic, exposed wall. Head to the lower ground floor where you’ll find the spacious, characterful sitting room, which offers a piano, a plentiful library and a collection of quirky seats, perfect for sinking into after lighting the large woodburner. The picturesque village of Golcar boasts independent shops and eateries, and to really enjoy the sights and sounds, be sure to follow the Ginnel Trails around the village, marked by plaques on the walls with maps also available in the local museum only a few doors away. Recommended places to eat and drink include the next-door villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden; the most up and coming places in the region and crammed with vintage shops and award-winning cafes and restaurants such as the Handmade Bakery and ‘Rumpus.’ A beautiful 20 mins walk away is the family-run Bolster Moor Farm Shop, with its on-site butchers, bakery, deli and café. For those looking to really treat themselves, the Titanic Spa is also five minutes’ drive from the cottage. Slightly further afield you’ll find the tourist village of Holmfirth, famous for TV’s ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ and the bustling market town of Huddersfield, excellent for a day out shopping or sampling the great range of old and new pubs, as well as many varied top class eating establishments. With the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District National Parks making up the landscape of the area this charming cottage – and with the Lakes District only slightly further away - the cottage is ideally situated for exploring some of the country's finest countryside. Whatever the weather, the views from Ginnel Corner cannot be beaten.

About the location

GOLCAR

Slaithwaite 1.2 miles; Huddersfield 2.5 miles; Holmfirth 7.5 miles.

Golcar (pronounced 'Goh-ker' locally) is a village nestled on a hillside crest above the Colne Valley, 2.5 miles from Huddersfield, alongside the River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Golcar played an important part in the Industrial Revolution as a weaving centre, and with its rich textile heritage, it now provides a delightful holiday base, made up of charming cobbled streets and local shops including an award-winning farm shop and restaurant, Golcar Brewery, a butcher, bakery, delicatessen and a range of inns and eateries. Enjoy stunning walks through dramatic moorland countryside, along river or canalside to the quaint villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden on the one side of Golcar, or right into the heart of the large market town of Huddersfield, with its excellent leisure facilities and its fine Victorian architecture, in the other direction. Spend sunny afternoons in the nearby historic villages of Slaithwaite and Marsden - with their collections of unique shops and independent pubs serving locally-sourced artisan delights. Titanic Spar is also a 10 minute walk away at the bottom of the valley, offering a range of swim, sauna and bespoke spa treatments all year round. The village of Holmfirth, made famous by BBC TV's Last Of The Summer Wine series is also well worth a visit, less than eight miles away. Just nine miles away is the popular town of Halifax and its stunning architecture where you can visit the newly renovated 'Piece Hall.' Golcar is also perfectly placed for those who are interested in art and literature; the Bronte's Haworth and Ted Hughes/ Sylvia Plath's Hebden Bridge being located just a short journey away. And if you want to brave 'red rose' territory (Lancashire) and learn about the life and work of the navvies (as features in BBC's 'Jericho, filmed just a couple of miles away) you will want to visit both the Saddleworth Moors and Britain's longest canal tunnel – 'Tunnel End Visitor Centre'; only five miles away. Situated on the edge of the Peak District National Park; offering a wealth of wonderful outdoor activities amongst stunning scenery steeped in history and with numerous local festivals (Golcar Lily Day, Marsden Jazz Festival, the Cuckoo and Moonraking Festivals), Golcar provides an excellent base for your West Yorkshire getaway.
