Relax in this idyllic setting and enjoy the variety of birdsong backed by the sound of the pristine river.

See countless birds in the garden, oyster catchers fly past, buzzards circle over head, the heron fly majestically from the river bank and the ducks paddle endlessly against the river flow.

At dusk keep a look out for the otter watched by the kingfisher and marvel at the aerobatics of the bats.

From the modern living space look out to the hills north and south and be tempted.

Adventure welcomes you every morning in Langholm – take an early morning swim in the river 20 yeards from the front door.

It will be cold but invigorating (but only when the river is low) before dashing back inside for a lovely hot shower in one of our new bathrooms.

Use one of the mountain bikes from the shed for a scenic cycle by the Tarras River Valley or for the more daring, ride the beautiful moorland road to Newcastleton watching out for the herds of wild goats with kids in the Springtime.

Langholm lies on coast to coast cycle routes and is blessed with quiet roads and varied circuits which are every biker’s or cyclist’s dream.

At Newcastleton you will also find one of the 7stanes mountain bike centres.

Langholm is at the centre of a wonderful natural environment so check out the events hosted by the newly created Tarras Valley Nature Reserve and volunteer to plant a tree.

Or, trek that bit further to explore the scenic wonders of Northumberland National Park including the Kielder Observatory a magical and unique visitor attraction where night time stories come to life. This area is full of history so spread out our maps in comfort on the dining table to plan your expeditions to roman forts, prehistoric trails, Queen Victoria’s hunting lodge, castles and local stately homes.

Soak up the local history by visiting Hermitage Castle where Mary Queen of Scots dallied with Darnley or the beautiful triangular Caelaverock Castle on the stunning Dumfrieshire coast.

The roman wall is a must as is the city of Carlisle with its imposing castle, gruesome history of the Border Reivers and mediaeval streets. On Esk Brae’s door step you can have a go at bowling at the Old Town bowling club where visitors are always welcome or get a permit to fish in the Esk 20 yards from the front door!

Fancy a spot of golf then head up the hillside to Langholm’s own 8 hole course.

If theatre is your thing then don’t miss out on the Buccleugh Centre where there is something for everyone from lunch to a pre-theatre meal before one of the many varied events throughout the year.

A little further afield sits Lockerbie, where the winter ice rink and curling matches are eager to entertain.

After an energising day put your adventure clothes in the utility room’s wash/dryer machine, shower or bathe in the roll top bath then relax in the sitting room on our sofas splashed with colour and watch the sunset.

Later if you still have energy, head out to experience the dark sky and glimpse the aurora borealis.

Eskbrae is ideal for cosy evenings in front of the flaming fire.

While dinner cooks in the state of the art kitchen with its modern appliances, get lost in a story on the Smart TV before chatting over the day’s adventures around the dining table sharing a drink from Langholm’s own brewery.

On warmer evenings, enjoy your culinary creations in the outdoor dining area, or settle down with a glass in the summer house.

When sleep calls relax into one of our sumptuously comfortable beds, king-size, double or twin to transport you to your dreams and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the river and night birds.

Awake refreshed in warm comfort.

No matter the adventure, Esk Brae is the tranquil base for a real getaway.

About the location

LANGHOLM

Lockerbie 18 miles; Carlisle 19 miles; Hawick 23 miles.

Langholm is a burgh on the River Esk in Dumfries and Galloway. From Mesolithic Man 9000 years ago, through Roman occupation to the notorious Border Reivers around the 16th century, Langholm has much history to share. The town developed around the textile industry, achieving a worldwide reputation for its woollens, expanding its population and earning the nickname of the ‘Muckle Toon’, or the Large Town. Langholm is also famous as the birthplace of Hugh MacDiarmid, the poet and Thomas Telford who was born just outside the town and after whom a road in the town is named. An unused Episcopalian church was converted into the Armstrong clan museum and was visited by astronaut Neil Armstrong in 1972 when he was made a freeman of the burgh. The town also hosts festivals for music, food and arts and the annual Common Riding draws many visitors. Within easy reach is Lockerbie, home to a good selection of bars and shopping facilities, as well as a jazz festival. A short drive from Langholm in the River Esk Valley is the Kagyu Samye Ling, the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre established in the West. As well as offering residential retreats, day visitors are welcome all year round to explore the temple or relax in the peace gardens and grounds.
