  • "The cottage was perfect for our family."

Plenty of outside space for everyone and the dogs to enjoy. The only negative is the stairs to the two bedrooms are rather steep and narrow. We went for a long weekend which was just right for me as you are a drive away from local amenities. Don’t forget mosquitoe candles and spray as they are everywhere this time of year!!!

  • "We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at Netherraw cottage."

Absolutely nothing to fault. The space was perfect and in the middle of the countryside with nothing but nature all around us - where we also enjoyed a few walks. Inside the cottage was very homely with everything you could possibly need and very comfortable. The weather was also wonderful, but that just added to the experience where we spent most of the time out the back, eating, having a few relaxing drinks and spending time in the awesome hot tub out the back too! Thank you for making this lovely cottage a lovely experience for anyone who enjoys a nice escape to the country, which we most appreciated!

With us on our week we had family from 3 different households and dogs and it had everything we needed. Everything was clean and in its place, the garden, hottub and field was perfect. The owners who I had to call twice during our stay because we actually wanted to extend our stay even when on her own break away was so helpful and kind and took the time to deal with us. I can not recommend this beautiful home and area enough. You will definitely be satisfied..

The cottage was well equipped and the beds were exceptionally comfortable. We all slept well, thanks in part to the cotton bed linen and soft, cosy pillows and duvets. Loved the hot tub! The cottage is well placed to explore the history of the Scottish borders, with many castles, stately homes and abbeys to visit.

! Netherraw is a wonderful cottage, I really don’t think the photos do it justice! Everything is top quality from the bed linen to the velvet sofas. We had such a relaxing time, our batteries are fully recharged. Newcastleton is a lovely little town with a great pub and cafes. There’s plenty of walks in the area and we saw plenty of red deer. It was lovely to come back after a days walking to a warm comfortable cottage, especially when we had been walking in snow. The electric shower was fantastic a definite power shower and the wi-if was great the speed was exceptional. Absolutely no complaints from us or the dogs who patiently sat in the garden waiting for something to come along the road which was not very often! A truly peaceful and tranquil area pass our thanks onto your cleaner as she does a brilliant job, the place was spotless.

  • "We have visited Netherraw for three years running however, sadly this will be the last time."

As a positive if you want isolation and great night skies and walks on your doorstep, Netherraw is perfect. There is hardly any noise, so you can hear the wildlife all around you. The upstairs bedrooms now have hangers for your clothes and ample drawer space. Sadly, the negatives we found were numerous. The shower basin easily flooded and water spilled over on to the floor. The only way to avoid this was to turn the shower on get wet, turn the shower off, lather up and then rinse off. Which isn't what you expect to do. This was raised last year when we came, but nothing has been done, in fact it is worse. The extractor fan isn't strong enough to cope with the steam in the shower room, so we had to leave the door open for it to escape. Not ideal but thankfully there was only the two of us. The toilet seat in the shower room, the laminate is cracked underneath and looks like it would soon start to peel off. The hot tube was part of the attraction of going to Netherraw, especially after long walks. On the second day we removed the hot tubs cover only to find that the headrests were damaged through wear and tear, their coverings were cracked and in some places none existent exposing the foam/cushioning underneath - so we decided not to use it. The overall feeling for us was that through usage the cottage just needs a bit of TLC.

About the location

NEWCASTLETON

Hawick 21 miles; Carlisle 24 miles.

The village of Newcastleton, sits just a few miles from the border of Scotland with England, in the Liddesdale Valley. It was founded in 1793 by the Duke of Buccleuch ('Buckloo’) and is also known as Copshaw Holm, or The Holm. Founded to create a centre for the weaving trade in the area, over time, Newcastleton attracted other trades including farmers, carpenters and shoe makers. Further development occurred with the arrival of the railway in the late 1800s, when the famous Waverley Line journeyed from Edinburgh to Carlisle. Historically a region of strife dating from the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century, the subsequent Norman invasion and the cross border battles between English and Scots, Liddesdale is at the centre of what was known as The Debatable Lands. The village today is little changed, and is famous for the nearby Hermitage Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots met her secret lover the 4th Earl of Boswell, and the ruin offers an imposing and spectacular sight filled with intrigue. The village is also popular with tourists due to its range of outdoor activities, which include mountain biking on the 7stanes trails, fishing, walking, wildlife watching, and an outdoor adventure centre. A vibrant and exciting holiday destination for all the family.
